After market DVD+/- RW....Which to choose....

’m about to purchase a Mac Pro and I realize that I can get the second DVD +/- RW from Apple, but I was looking at some after market stuff. I was looking @ 16x Double Layer DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe from LaCie. Does any one know if this will work on the new Intel chip set?
Also, If someone know of a better option, by all mean, fill me in… I just think I can get a fast drive in the after market environment then if I have Apple put one in for me. (I know Sony has a drive that works but are there others)
Thanks for all the help…

I also have the Lacie with Lightscribe (external drive) attached to my MacPro. It works well.
I'm a little disappointed that the solution to get the optical drive functionality working on a premium Apple workstation seems to be to ignore the superdrive that ships in the MacPro and just buy a 3rd party secondary DVD drive.
My MacPro (Pioneer Superdrive) will not read commercial DVDs, will not read many types of CD and is just plain unreliable. The problems with Superdrives reading DVDs seems to be a fairly widespread problem. Are we all on our own here? I have a MacPro at home and also another at work, and they both have defective Superdrives in that they will not read commercial DVD media.
I'd prefer if I could to stick with an internal OEM Superdrive - anybody have experience getting Apple to FIX this problem instead of us fixing it for Apple by buying extra working parts for these MacPro's?
Thanks

  • After-Market / Fake Products (Headsets)

My iphone is already here: it's the e61. I don't think this device, rightly lauded everywhere else, gets enough praise in the U.S. But it needs a companion. In December, I started to look for a bluetooth headset. I narrowed my search to Nokia BH-800 and BH-900. And there begins my run-in with an aftermarket product - and what kind of support I received from the marketplace, including Nokia. Almost every company carps about "after market" products, aka fakes. We are told that billions are lost because of "after market" products, mainly from China. Tiffany even made a public issue of it with ebay. So how much do companies really care about fakes - and attempts by consumers to expose them? I'm starting to wonder. I have had to jump through incredible hoops to a) prove a "BH-800" fake, which I conclusively did and have been reporting my progress to both ebay and Nokia; b) get any kind of refund, in this case from PayPal, which has agreed with my claim but continues to demand things of me within deadlines that frankly stun me; and c) nothing has been done with the seller - he's still on business on ebay. It appears to be all in vain. This is how it all happened: In December, I bought a BH-800 from a Hong Kong-based seller on ebay with, at the time, great feedback. The package arrived. It looked original. There was no warranty card and the manual looked suspect, I thought, but maybe that was an Asian version - all would be forgiven if the product itself was the real thing. Sure enough, the product charged. It paired with my e61. Then, within 15 minutes it started to beep: low battery. I tried to recharge the unit. No luck. The red light wouldn't even come on. I e-mailed the seller. He promised quick action and asked to me keep trying to charge the headset. No luck. I e-mailed him again. No response. I e-mailed again, no response. This is where my ire kicked in, as both a Nokia user and a Nokia shareholder. I reported my experience with the headset and the lack of Seller communication to PayPal - and filed a claim for refund. Online, I read about Nokia's efforts to shut down fakes. I thought, great: they can be like Tiffany, aggressively fighting the after-markets. So I e-mailed Nokia Customer Service, which, to its credit, asked me to send them the item number and the Seller info. I did. Then PayPal wrote me back. They wanted proof (or as they call it, authentication by a third party) that my BH-800 was a fake. I had 10 days to do it, or the claim was canceled. I wrote Nokia Customer Service again, asking for their help in authenticating the product - at my expense. Not hearing back, I called Nokia Customer Service and explained what I was trying to do. "Is this about a phone," they kept asking. No, about a fake headset - you guys care about fakes, don't you. I was asked to e-mail again. I did. I got an e-mail that said my query had been forwarded to the "appropriate product department". I noted the urgency of the the PayPal 10-day deadline, again. So, then, I called the Nokia flagship store in New York. Someone said to bring the piece in. I happened to going to NY on business. I took the piece in. Assistant Manager Joanne Losinno was great. She agreed to help me. She had never seen anything like it. The piece was smaller than an original BH-800, there was no UPC code, the manual was a fake, the accompanying pouch was not the standard. What Losinno couldn't do was state on paper, for legal reasons she said, that the item was an out and out fake. But she could make darn close in a letter. Which she did. In turn, I faxed her letter to PayPal, as instructed. Two days ago, I received my response. Yes, I could get a refund if I a) I returned the item to the Seller in Hong Kong at my own expense; b) reported a confirmed tracking number within 10 days to PayPal; c) I wait until the Seller confirms that he has received it. In the absence of all that, I lose my claim. As of this writing, I have satisfied two of those three conditions. Sending the package registered USPS cost me $17, or more than 50% of the original PayPal charge. Meanwhile, Nokia Customer Service has never gotten back to me - on an effort that I wanted to believe I was undertaking on their behalf. You see, I am also a Nokia shareholder, which I had mentioned to Customer Service. As far as I know, Nokia CS has no idea that their NY flagship store was even involved, since they neither suggested it nor responded when I said I was going to do that - a critical piece that would have brought everyone in the loop effortlessly. Meanwhile ebay continues to host this seller and others like him. Sister company PayPal continues to accept payments on behalf of this Seller. Recently, the Seller's negative ratings have started to pile up. I also went back and dug deeper into his ratings. I'm not the first to receive a fake BH-800 - a fact also reported to Paypal. Meanwhile, I bought a BH-900, an authentic one, on ebay, from a U.S.-based seller, and am very happy with it. Still, I wonder about Nokia, which can integrate complicated functions on its phones but not its responsiveness to a diligent customer. I doubt I'll hear from Nokia, but it's a nice thought. Life goes on, and so do fakes. I will be happy to provide documentation on all of the above to bona fide parties with a stake in supporting my efforts.

Short ago I bought this adaptor to connect an iMac with my beamer (Mitsubishi HC 1100) and the outcome is - better than ever. Clearly you can say that one adapter is better than two. I can't believe that it took so long until this adaptor was developed. I had been looking for it already one year ago

  • Best after market effects generators for text and graphics?

Someone posted a link of many different companies that have after market effects you can download to FCE. Does anyone have that link AND what after market programs do you recommend?
All i have is LiveType that came with Final Cut Express, I need to amp up my graphics/text and motion.
I have looked into some BORIS FX but I dont know which is the best?
Can anyone help answer this question based on the information I have given.
(I need Better Graphic/Text Generators, for like lower 3rds etc...)

    define 'better' ...
imho, LiveType offers an exhausting variety of options, for sure you're not limited by 'ready-mades', you can create your very own ones.. your creativity is the limit
plus, LT and/or FC/e allow usage of Photoshop-layers.
simple ex, create a title in PS/elements (=for video, no need for the Big CS-suite), create a 2nd layer with the shadow => in FC/e you can 'animate'/keyframe the shadow and the title independently, e.g. the shadow 'follows' with a little delay the in-flighing text..
many professional lower 3rds are a combo of 'static' grafic plus animation - so, you can 're-enact' this with *two tracks* of grafic + LT titleing.

  • Stock Keyboard Stiff Keys--Anyone Know an Outstanding After Market Keyboard

I have a stock mac keyboard (non-wireless) that came with my iMac G5. I purchased the ensemble new in Jun 2005. I noticed that all the keys were more stiff than on other non-Mac keyboards. Also I have always noticed that stock Mac keyboards have stiff keys (not just this one) compared to non-mac keyboards. Stock mac desktop keyboard keys are stiff compared to mac laptops.
With age the keys on my keyboard seem to have gotten stiffer. I have read the other threads where people say to stiff key inquiries, "clean your keyboard."
So this past weekend I removed all of the keys. Took my electric air compressor set it to max 40 psi (read this somewhere as the max pressure for computers) and cleaned out the keyboard. I then painstakingly cleaned each key and keyboard with Windex cut with water.
Results? Jack none! Well, the stiff keys are now clean.
So, enough with this stock keyboard with stiff keys.
Anyone use an after market Mac keyboard (non-wireless). If so what do you recommend?
BTW OWC has a few candidates:
    - icekey
    - OS X keyboard
    - Kensington Slim Type Keyboard for Mac
    -iKEYSLIM
Again anyone with firsthand knowledge have a recommendation?
    Cheers,
    Chuck

    Chuck--
Keyboards are really very personal choices, so your best bet is to try them out for yourself. I've read great things about the Matias Tactile Pro Keyboard, which they compare to the best keyboard I ever owned, the Apple Extended Keyboard. But while some people like it, others hate it. I tried it at a MicroCenter and wasn't terribly impressed, but that's just me. But it might strike you differently.
Other than that one, I haven't really found any that compare to the ones Apple ships. Like you, I think I'd like more of the feel of the laptop keyboards, but I've never seen one in a standalone keyboard.

  • Disk utility: verify selection- which to choose

When you open disk utility, you see the size/type of HD you have, then underneath usually "Macintosh HD." Assuming this is all you have and you haven't split your disk up, does it matter which you choose in order to repair and verify? Does each location produce different results?

    Hi, powerbook1701.
    Given the situation you described:
    1. One hard drive in or attached the computer.
    2. The hard drive has with only one partition/volume, i.e. you see something similar to the following in the left column of Disk Utility:<pre>233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0
Macintosh HD</pre>Then you can select either the device or the Macintosh HD volume.
The first line — 233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0 — is the device, i.e. the hard drive. The second line, Macintosh HD listed below and indented from the first line, is a volume on that device.
Note that to run Repair Disk on your normal startup disk, i.e. Macintosh HD, you need to startup from your Tiger Install Disk (or a bootable duplicate of Macintosh HD) and run Disk Utility from there.
Verify or Repair Permissions only apply to volumes on which Mac OS X is installed. Neither is an available choice for data-only volumes or devices.
When in doubt, select the volume you want to verify or repair.
Note that if you have a drive with multiple partitions, e.g.<pre>233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0
    Data Volume 1
    Data Volume 2
Data Volume 3</pre>select the device, and then select either Repair Disk or Verify Disk, all volumes on that device will be repaired or verified in sequence. Again, none of the volumes on that device should be your current startup disk, i.e. the disk from which you started up your Mac.
You can even select multiple devices by holding the Command Key while making selections. In such a case all volumes on the selected devices will be verified or repaired.
For example, if I started up from the Tiger Install DVD, launched Disk Utility, selected the two devices shown here:<pre>233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0
    Macintosh HD
    233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0
    Data Volume 1
    Data Volume 2
Data Volume 3</pre>and then clicked Repair Disk, all volumes on the two drives would be repaired.
    Good luck!

  • Static/poping sound/clicking while using my after market ear buds???

I'm having the "Static" issue with my new iPhone 4 as well. However, I'm only getting the static while I'm wearing my ear buds and only while talking on my phone(No issues with itunes). I took my iphone 4 back to the Apple Store and got a new one! It's doing the same thing! So, either it's BOTH of the EXPENSIVE after market ear buds I own or it's picking up interference from the car... That's all I can come up with. Any other thoughts?
Also, never happen with my other iPhones(3gs, etc..)

Last night, I actually tried to run Premiere while that file was in the trash (removed from its original location) and the application simply would not start. The splash screen would appear for a fraction of a second and then the program would crash. It remained that way until I moved the file back into its usual location, after which point the application started up.
The noise continued as before (adjusting my computer's volume also triggers it). I did notice a few things, though:
    1. It appears the noise occurs mainly after I switch into Premiere from another program or the Finder then navigate clips in the timeline panel. It typically occurs when I move the red line into a clip or out of one.
    2. It happens a handful of times, then seems not to occur again until I switch out of Premiere to another application, at which point it will happen a few more times, then typically stop.
    3. It seems to not occur at all when Audio 7 in the timeline is hidden.
I still don't know what is really causing it but it looks as if I can work without incident if I keep Audio 7 turned off.
    What a strange situation.

  • After-market Mini DVI to HDMI adaptor

Has anyone tried an after market MINI-DVI to HDMI adaptors to run a video signal from the iMac to a TV?
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041912&pid=4852&seq=1&format=6#faq
I know Apple wants us to purchase their products...and in this case we'd have to purchase 2 adaptors/Cables (mini DVI to DVI & DVI to HDMI).....seems like a waste as each cable runs around $20 each when I could just easily buy one adaptor for $10 on monoprice.
For what it's worth, monoprice.com is very reliable, has great prices, fast shipping and very nice products. I use them for all my cable, wire, adaptor needs (and no, i do not work for them either). I used to be very particular about my cables and would fork up tons of money buying monster cables be it of the xbox, home theatre, cable box, HDTV etc all to realise that a cable is a cable, they all pretty much spit out that same quality image or sound regardless. So check 'em out!

I dropped my iphone 5 in the water, its dead and when I try to charge it the apple logo comes and goes, thats my only sign of life, I've done many after market repairs but what I want to know is if I should replace the ligntning port or the battery... or just buy a galaxy s5?

If you dropped it in water, and then plugged it in, you may very well have destroyed the battery and/or the logic board.  Charging/plugging in to a power source is very damaging to wet electronic devices.  There is not much you can do but replace the entire iPhone...and since you did repairs yourself Apple will not do an out-of-warranty replacement.
You can try replacing the battery, the lightning port is another issue, but I would not expect that iPhone to work again.

  • "Object Picker cannot open because no locations from which to choose objects can be found"

    Hi,
When I try in AD management console in the domain controller to add a new group for a user I get the following error:
"Object Picker cannot open because no locations from which to choose objects can be found" error message when you try to select objects from an Active Directory domain in Windows 2000
Our domain controller is a W2000 cluster (two W2000 advanced server machines) and this happens in one of the nodes of the controller while in the other node it Works well (the difference between them is where it fails, has the resources: print,
file sharing and quorum services). Both nodes of the controller have the remote registry service disabled and in the node where it fails when you start this service it works well but I don`t think this is the reason because in the other node with remote registry
service disabled it works. Solutions from the following support articles don`t work:
    kb 263231
    kb 284914
I have checked that the situation is independent of the domain administrator who tries to add the group to the user.
Can anybody help me? Which is the reason of this different behaviour from one cluster node to another ?
    Thanks.

    Hi Milos,
Thanks for your answer but I think this is not the case because the problem is not with NTFS and we don' have these problems:
Users or groups that have Full Control access cannot delegate permissions.
Users who have Full Control access cannot make permission changes on a DFS share.
If you give the non-privileged user the right to log on locally and you log on locally to the file server where the error message occurs, you can successfully edit the ACL.
It only happens with the AD management console. Now, for us it is not posible to upgrade the system.

  • MacBook Pro After-Market Monitors

What is the best 17" after-market display/monitor to use with a MacBook Pro? I don't need a lot of tilt-and-turn or wide-angle viewing, don't do a lot of graphics-intensive work, but I would like speakers, legible text and good color. (I read back issues of MacWorld for advice but didn't see a lot of comparison reviews or other helpful articles. I did see one review of the NEC205wxm unit, but that's a little too big and expensive for me.) Thanks
