After restore, ARD can't authenticate to OSX.5.6, only local admin shows up

After restoring a Xserve that lost its boot drive (I had a duplicate drive that had the OS and settings on it from when I updated the server, it was a backup, however the server only does AFP so no complicated settings changed between when it was made (6 months ago) and yesterday. I can now no longer access the server with ARD, as in the remote management section of the Sharing control panel, it only shows "Local Administrator". No other users. If I go to Server Preferences, my users and groups are all there. The only way I can connect is enable "Anyone may request permission to control screen". Not ideal if I'm at home when I need to get to it (through VPN, don't worry, its safe). Why can't the Sharing CP see all of the other users? If I click Add to add a user to that list, only "Local Administrator" shows up.
I'm assuming some kind of LDAP problem, maybe? Not sure how the two interact. (The local admin account and the Administrator account as they are obviously different...)
Ideas?

mattknows you are not insane - I used your solution and it works (had to use the Local Administrator on ARD as it's the only one that works) - It's a brand new installation of osx server and the only thing I did was downloading the updates.
Could this be a setting and not a bug problem?

Restore back up of my iPhone-password not recognised. After restore, itunes can not restore because it says the password is incorrect. But I can sign into my apple account with the password.  My iPhone is now set to factory settings as a new phone, what can i do to access the back up from my phone before I reset it.

That does happen.  It depends on how hard the server is being hit, as well as the connection speed of your system.  If you are on a windows system, you will want to disable any antivirus or firewall software during the download.

  • I have two iPhoto Libraries now after restore.  Can I delete one?

A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with iPhoto and used the restore feature.  Now I have two folders in my Pictures section of iMac.  One folder says iPhoto and the other folder says iPhoto (original).  They both had the same pictures in them except for the new folder in which I had added pictures that I recently transferred from my camera.  I saved the extra pictures and added them to my original iPhoto folder.  Now it seems like I should delete one of the folders but I am afraid to do that.   Both folders seem to be working properly now.
At the time I had the problem I had just installed a new camera software for transferring photos.  After restoring iPhoto, I deleted that software.  I don't know if that software was the cause of the problem and I don't know if deleting the software put the original iPhoto back to normal.  But now I do have two folders that have the same pictures.  What would happen if I deleted one of the folders (probably the newest one and keep the original)?  Would I create yet another problem?

Yes - you can delete one - but before emptying the trash fully tes tthe remaining one to be sure it is what you want

  • Can individual Adobe Air apps be installed without local admin permission into a user-owned folder?

    Is this a supported scenario?
    Windows 7 PC.
Adobe Air runtime (latest; 4.0) has been installed by an administrator using a local admin account and the eulaAccepted file is present under the "All Users" profile.
User logs in using her own account which does not have local admin rights.
User downloads an Air app and tries to install it to C:\Users\<username> where she has full write permissions to the disk.
What I observe when acting as the User is that the Windows UAC (security escalation to local admin rights) dialog pops up. Can anyone clearly state what the Adobe Air installer is doing that requires the UAC escalation when installing an app to a user's folder? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply, Chris. We're working around these problems by deploying the Air runtime + the application separately using an administration tool, which is fine for now.
I logged the question because I don't see any registry edits or privileged folder access taking place. I suspect that the UAC escalation has something to do with the "eulaAccepted" file; checking that it exists. I doubt that escalated permissions are really required for this. In the long term, it'd be good if this "use case" could be added to the test cycle of Air; perhaps the UAC dialog could be avoided, improving the flexibility of deployment options.
Ideally the test would start with an adminstrator-installed Air package *without* the EULA being accepted. The user should be able to install apps and approve the EULA without the UAC dialog popping up at all.

  • After Restore I Can't Boot

I work in a company IT department.  I started in May and at that point had this guy who worked with me (who doesn't now) tell me that I needed to install this software called LikeWise.  It's used for pushing rules out across a network to get peoples passwords changed periodically and other stuff I'm sure.  This involved my user profile being migrated or changed in some way, with the effect of having added me to the company domain.  So when I log in I would then have to type "Domain/rwallace" as my username.  So this complicated the more simple user name that I had been using and as a result I became one of the only people with this program.  Then recently in trying to get access to this machine through LogMeIn I was unable to get it to accept my Mac creds and so I decided to take LikeWise off.  Mistake.  Because I did not have an alternitive admin account (or any for that matter) I had no recourse when I went to log in upon a restart and found that no longer were my credentials working.  They didn't work without the domain, they just didn't take.  So then I'm thinking this program which had pulled a switcheroo on my user identity in order to control it dropped my user name or something...something changed is what I'm saying, so a year later here is the issue.  At this point I can not log in, so I take my external hard drive with the Time Machine backup on there and go tell it to restore.  After coming in this morning, after having letting it run all night, I just see the gray screen with the apple and the spinney thing going.  So I force turn off the machine, and this same screen comes up again.  Did I do the restore wrong?  I did not wipe the drive first, but told it that it could delete whatever it needed to in the restore setup process.  I did boot off the external drive, but it started the same way as if I would have from the recovery partition or the Install DVD so that doens't seem like a bad place to have started.  However this is was upgraded to Lion, so my install DVD reflects the Snow Leopard OS.  What can I do to get my time machine to successfully create a bootable instance of itself on my HD after this sort of failure?

I know that this issue has come up on the board before, but as i search through them I have yet to find one that has been solved that is applicable to what I am doing here.  Perhaps I just need an answer extrapolated or repurposed for my needs to be able to get a working machine sooner then later.

  • After restore I can see etc, tmp and var.

    I have a G5DP1.8 with 2 internal hard drives.
I cleaned one drive off, then used Apple Disk Utility's restore feature to copy the main drive to the freshly cleaned dive. After rebooting to the new drive, I can see the etc, var and tmp directories. They are no longer hidden. Theey also have a small upturned arrow in the lower left corner as if they are aliases.
How do I make them invisible to the system again?

Use the instructions in this article to hide the folders; steps 4 through 7 can also be done on your hard disk.

I am so done with this.  8,000 songs on my iTunes app and now I only have 256 songs!!  I purchased a new computer and had backed up all my content onto an external hard drive.  When I downloaded the content onto the new computer, I was unable to access my music for 90 days!!  What a bunch of BS!  $8,000 down the drain, just like that.  This is ludicruis!  I have tried to contact support but they require some sort of serial number, don't have one, this is not an Apple computer.  So their support ***** as they only give you one option to contact them.  I still have my content on the back up but am afraid to re-download in fear I won't have access to the material for another 90 days!  Has anyone else had this problem?  I feel like I've been ripped off!

  • Can't enable iCloud Keychain after restore?

I know my security code and the Apple ID password, as well as the phone #. However, I haven't received the message yet. I don't think my carrier supports SMS. This was the only device with keychain enabled, and after restoring I can't use it to confirm itself. Is there some other way to set up keychain?

If you can't receive the verification code via sms on your phone, then you need to contact Apple support as the prompt indicates.  They can verify your credentials and add your device to the keychain: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/.

  • Problems with Pcd Content after restore EP Portal with online Backup

    Dear Colleagues,
We have problems to show Pcd Content (Browse and Search) of the Content Administration tab of the EP Portal after restore with a online Backup during Disaster Recovery Test.
Restore has become on a mirror system of Production environment. Ours EP Portal is a cluster system with the following configuration:
    Production landscape:
    Node 1
Disk K:\ SAP SCS directory. (Clustered)
Disk E:\ SAP Central Instance directory (Local)
    Node 2
Disk E:\ SAP Dialogue Instance directory (Local)
    Disk M:\ SQL Datafiles. (Clustered)
    Disk L:\ SQL Logfiles. (Clustered)
    Disaster Recovery landscape:
    Only a Node
Disk K:\ SAP SCS directory. (Clustered)
Disk E:\ SAP Central Instance directory (Local)
    Disk M:\ SQL Datafiles
    Disk L:\ SQL Logfiles
    Portal Version
    J2EE Engine = 6.40 PatchLevel 105424.313
    Portal = 6.0.18.0.0
After restore, the data base as the SAP application starts
correctly but when logon in the Portal, the Pcd Content of Content Administration tab
and to other tabs with similar information is not shown.
After restore it can be necessary to reactivate some type of configuration, links, etc?, for this type of restore is better to make a backup offline instead of online one?
We are thankful for any information on the matter.
    Thanks,
    Regards.
    Rafa R.R.

The issue was solved with a offline backup.

  • Elements 10, after restoring pictures demand reconnecting!

Elements 10, after restoring all the files are on the computer, but catalog doesn't show any of the pictures, says they all need to be reconnected!? A huge job for 47 000 pictures... Did it for the second time now, re-installed the program in between. What now?!

    Yep, you got it.
Had to re-install the whole machine in trying to get Organizer 12 working, installing flash memory of tera and everything. (Didn't help.)
Before that process took backup with Organizer 10, in July 2014.
Backup still available, run it back on the computer yesterday with same results as today after re-installing the Elements 10. (Got so fed up with Adobe that it took a while to get back on the saddle.)
Yesterday used original location, today didn't prompt to create same folder structure but otherwise same location.
ALL files are missing. Yes. Immediately after backup.
Been trying to reconnect, but the pictures don't get any less (47 225 to reconnect all the time) and all the time I get the message that they already exists in the catalog.
Pictures and videos take about 198 Gb.
I have 5 external hard drives, mostly I use the ones with tera space. Pictures seem to all be correctly and fully restored, folder structure is correct and the ones that I have opened seem to work. Even if they would not be, I still have the pics in some other place as originals.
Most of all I would like to save the hard work I've done tagging and evaluating all the pictures.
And I hope to God I soon get to make another backup knowing that everything is allright.
As I told you, this is the second time of restoring with the same result. Not doing it the third time with knowing that something is fundamentally different.

  • Mail accounts not showing after restoring a profile backup

Followed the instructions here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_restoring-a-profile-backup for manually "Restoring to a different location".
Re-stated TB and only "local Folders" show in the home tab. The emails for my previous main account are there minus what was on the "inbox" for that account.
The rest of the email accounts were created in the account settings but are not showing in the home tab (no emails).
When I point to the server settings they message storage is set to this folder and I get this message.
The Local Directory path "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxx.default\Mail\pop.1and1-2.com" is not suitable for message storage. Please choose another directory.
Could you please provide some help?

Normally the instructions work fine, but in your case there seems to be a glich. I've heard that some issue can occur if the Profile has been moved from one pc to another and previous pc directory used :
C:\\'''Documents and Settings'''\\ and the root directory gets confused.
This is located in the prefs.js file, which you copied over when you followed the instructions.
It can be fiddly and time consuming trying to correct this file.
So I'm going to suggest that you do not use the old prefs.js file.
The best way forward would be to delete the Profile and start again but this time using a fresh new prefs.js file.
    Using Profile Manager
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager
create new Profile and then click on 'start thunderbird'
Manually create all the mail accounts - email addresses, which you had backed up, but do not download anything.
File > New > existing mail account
    or
menu icon > New Messages > exisitng mail account
enter name, full email address and password for the mail account,
    click on 'Remember Password'
    Click on 'continue' button.
When all mail accounts have been created in the new Profile, check the Account Settings are exactly as you require.
Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings
    or
Menu icon > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings
check all preferences are as you require
also check other settings eg: Copies & Folders, Junk Settings etc.
when all is ok click on OK to save any changes.
Then access the Profile folder as follows.
make sure hidden folders are visible:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
    In Thunderbird
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * click on 'show folder ' button
    * A new window opens.
'''Close Thunderbird now - this is important.'''
The Profile folder will show a 'Mail' folder amongst other files and folders.
    scroll down to see:
    abook.mab and history.mab files.
These are your Personal Address Book and Collected Addresses. The new files will be empty.
Locate your backup profile and copy paste the abook.mab and history.mab files into the new Profile overwriting the new blank files of same name.
    Additional info:
You may have a few more files that you may wish to copy/paste into this profile name overwriting files of same name. Not totally essential, but will save time setting these preferences up again.
    * localstore.rdf - Toolbar and window layout size/position settings.
    * mailviews.dat - Defines your current message view
    * mimeTypes.rdf - Action to perform when downloading certain types of files.
    * training.dat - Custom training for Junk Mail Controls
In new Profile, click on 'Mail' folder
You should see your added mail account names and Local Folders.
click on one of the mail accounts.
They will have the basic default folders which of course are empty.
Locate backup Profile mail account for same email address.
you need to copy paste the ''contents'' of the backed up mail account name into the new empty mail account name.
Copy all the files and folders and paste into the new mail account folder overwriting the contents eg: Inbox. It may look similar to image below.
Do this for each mail account and Local Folders.
So you have replaced the new empty mail accounts files with all the backed up email files.
    Restart Thunderbird.
    Please report back on results.

  • Can't Authenticate in LDAP directory after upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.5.1

    Hi, all
Yesterday I have tried to upgrade my Xserve Intel from 10.4.11 Tiger to 10.5.1 Leopard Server
In my server there is this service:
    -AFP
    -DNS
    -SMB
    -Open Directory Master
    - XSAN Primary MDC
All works fine but when I try to acces with worgroup manager to LDAP directory I can't authenticate with "diradmin" this thing appen in local machine and with remote worgroup manager connected to the server.
I have tried with "root" user and I have been able to authenticate for some time, (5-15 min.) after It's impossible to access with all user.
The client still authenticate with user and password in all computer with 10.5.1 and 10.4.11 workstation, but now i wan't to add some new users and I can't do That!!!!!
So for now I have restore my old 10.4.11 Server Tiger, but I wish to know if someone have tried new 10.5.2 server upgrade and maybe there is some kind of fix to this problem.
    Thank's In Advance

After posting on numerous message boards, and no one having an exact answer, but several making plenty of great suggestions, I think I've finally figured out the cause of this issue or at least part of the cause.
Within 'Server Admin', select "Open Directory",
under: Settings > Policy > Binding
there are six check boxes under "Security"... for testing kerberos, I have been checking the first four boxes, which are:
    1. disable clear text passwords
    2. digitally sign all packets (requires Kerberos)
    3. encrypt all packets (requires ssl or kerberos)
    4. block man-in-the-middle attackes (requires kerberos)
through troubleshooting this myself, and doing each change, followed by a server reboot, then immediately attempting to authenticate to /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1/, it seems that enabling some, or some combination of these Security settings triggers WordGroup Manager to not accept the diradmin password.
referring to the numbers above (1 through 4)...
2 or 4 by themselves fails
    1 and 3 together fails
I haven't gone beyond that for testing and don't know what other combinations works or fails.
I don't know if there is something beyond this that is specific to my configuration or environment that plays a part in this failing. All I know is that turning off all Security checkboxes in this section fixes the problem.
I wonder if anyone who has never seen this problem can try this on their 10.5.2 Server and see if they are still able to authenticate as their diradmin to WGM. Regardless, seems that this is a WGM bug to me, right?
if you are having this problem, uncheck all of these boxes and then reboot before trying to authenticate.

  • Password does not work after time machine restore and can not reset from CD

The hard drive failed on my Power Mac G5. I replaced it and restored everything from Time Machine. The two non -admin accounts I can log into fine but my password for the admin account does not.  I tried resetting it booting from the OSX CD and using the password reset utility. It says it has done its thing but then I reboot and try to log in same problem.  It even has the old password hint.  I changed that  so I could see if it worked. I tried both my account and the root account out of desperation.  Any help appreciated!

  • Profile manager can't enroll after restore from time machine

I am using mac mini server as ipad manaagement server ,the server cashed and can't load the OSX,then i use time machine to restore the backup ,after that i try to enroll new ipad to server but it can't.
also i can't push the setting through the server to ipad
    anyone can help me?

There could be a few reasons for this.
First what version of OS X do you have installed?
What version of OS X is the Time Machine Backup file from?
Did Reinstalling OS X from Recovery install the same version you had before reinstalling?
If you have not changed OS X versions then:
It sounds like there may be a bad file in the backup that is causing the computer to not startup after restoring it. This is especailly true if the computer boots just fine after a fresh installation of OS X, but without the Migrated Data being restored.
If that is the case, then the solution is not a quick one. You have to hunt down the bad file.
Moving Files Manually (Not in Migration Assistant)
Manually access your Time Machine backup folder from within Finder (you should see the backup drive in a Finder Window or on your Desktop). Once open, manually move data from the User folder (documents, music, movies, photos etc.) into their respective folders on the Mac. Reboot after each folder you move to see which folder contains the corrupted file then delete the affected folder/file after reinstalling OS X from Recovery.
If none of the files cause the computer to hang at startup after moving all your User data, then the issue is from within the System or Library folders.
NOTE: DO NOT manually move Applications, System, or System Library files over to the Mac. You can cause major issues with the current installation by doing so. It is safer to just reinstall all the Apps from wherever you got them so they can recreate their support files and such themselves.
    2- Using Migration Assistant
Basically, if you have discovered the affected file. You can just simply delete it from the backup folder.
Reinstall OS X after you have done that, and use Migration Assistant to automatically migrate the data over minus the affected file/folder.
Its a pain in the rear, but it will at least let you salvage most of your data.
Let me know what happens riorec!
