AG-DVX100B footage locked as 4:3 Letterboxed?

I have footage from a job shot on AG-DVX100B's 16:9 24p.
I noticed when I play the tapes back on my SONY DSR-11 deck the footage plays 4:3 Letterboxed.
Does this mean the cams were set to record as 4:3 letterbox as opposed to 16:9 anamorphic?
I'm guessing if I had playback through the AG-DVX100B it would still output as 4:3 Letterboxed?
Thanks

The dvx has three aspect settings: normal letterbox and squeeze. It sounds like the cam was set for letterbox rather than squeeze.
If it was anamorphic, you'd see it as squeezed on a regular monitor, or proper 16x9 on a widescreen capable monitor.
Sounds like somebody made a boo-boo.

  • Weird problem with DVX100b footage

I've got two sources of video in my timeline. Some XL1s footage shot at 30P which looks fine, and some DVX100b footage SOME OF WHICH does not look fine One big clip does not look fine. i don't know what mode the DVX was shot in, either 24P or 24P advanced I think. SOME of the DVX footage has a problem. The difference between the bad DVX assets and the OK DVX assets is that the bad assets claim to be 23.97 under properties:format. If I go frame by frame in the 29.97 timeline, the bad footage plays this pattern of advancing the frames - advance, advance, repeat, advance, interlace, advance, advance, repeat, advance, interlace. that is how the 23.97 footage plays in my 29.97 timeline.
So I also have good footage also shot with the DVX that is 29.97 footage in a 29.97 timeline. This pattern goes: adv, adv, adv, int, int, adv, adv, adv, int, int. A 3:2. Looks fine I guess.
So how do I change the behavior of the bad clip? How do I modify it's setting so that it considers itself 29.97 footage?
If I "conform" this asset to 29.97 in cinematools its too fast. help!?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
    TJ

That was helpful. I didn't actually fully know the difference between 24p and 24pA. now I do, thats good. I'm not sure that understanding the cadences better was able to help this situation because its so strange. Somehow though, this problem happened AFTER I captured it. I just pulled up my backup files from another disc, older project file, backed up assets. and there, my bad clip is fine. So something happened to the clip since I backed it up that is making it not work. Somehow it was made into a 23.98 clip, and I couldn't reverse it properly. it doesn't make any sense to me either! This old one is 29.97, and it works perfectly in a 29.97 timeline as far as can tell so far. I have no idea what happened. I don't recall ever fussing with it. The only thing I can think of is that I think I may have sent it into imovie as test footage while helping somebody learn imovie. I'm just going to say that backing up the initial project was a good idea, there may be a leprechauns in my computer, and I'm walking away from this post because the problem is fixed and I doubt I'll encounter it again. As for multiple frame-rates, I hadn't known that was possible until I read a post that claimed it used to be. So I do understand that multiple frame rates is not possible. Anyhow, "walking away". Thanks so much for the responses.

  • CS4 Mac Reconnect Footage locks up?

    Greetings!
I rencently wiped my hard drive for a fresh install of my new CS4 Production Premium. The location of my media now sets in a different location. No problem! The media is still on my Mac.
When I load my old CS3 projects, it tells me X number of files are offline. No problem! I highlight my video clips > reconnect footage and it re-links all clips. No Problem! I highlight my other files (and I've done this in every possible order, psd, eps, ai, jpeg) and I do a search for the individual clip thats offline, and as I click OK it says XY number of files were found ... pinwheel. After Effects locks up! ??  I've even left the project clips offline, and Saved As CS4. Pinwheel if I reconnect footage.
I've tried this on ALL of my old CS3 projects! I've reversed the order in which offline clips I select first. Pinwheel.
What's going on??? Why won't After Effects reconnect my footage without locking up? I'm up-to-date 9.0.2.

Yes, if I manually loacate the file, then it WON'T lock up. If I perform a search for that file (in the After Effects Replace Footage window), it DOES. Strange.
In Apple's Final Cut Pro, the Search function for reconnecting media works quite well so I'm certain this is not a MacOS files system issue.
I've had this same thing happen to me in AE. I just figured it was a minor bug, something ugly between the MacOS Spotlight and Adobe? They're not getting along with each other. I gave up trying to figure it out and simply use your same workaround.

  • 16:9 footage shows in Canvas  with letterboxing!

Hi, I shot footage in 16:9 and on three of the Sequences I created in the editing process, it shows just fine. But on the first Sequence, I probably didn't create the sequence in Anamorphic, so the footage shows in a 4:3 window, and the image is letterboxed. I thought, 'OK, I'll just copy the clips and paste them in a new anamorphic sequence', but the result is bad; it is still letterboxed and spread unnaturally wide to fit a 16:9 window. Do I have to start all my editing over again?
A follow-up question. On a different Sequence there is a black strip on the left side of all the images. I have no idea what that is all about.
    Thanks for any help, Bob

Select the clips and use the Edit>Remove Attributes function to reset the distort value. Any motion effects will probably have to be redone.
Can you post a screen shot of the problem you're seeing?

  • Mixing "letterboxed" and "squeezed" footage in the same sequence

This is a good one. All footage shot on a DVX100, which has 2 ways of getting widescreen: squeeze and letterbox.
We shot 2 tapes worth of footage three weeks ago using squeeze for widescreen. I have since made a rough cut of all that footage.
Today, we shot the remaining scenes, but they were shot letterbox for widescreen (due to a communication errore between myself and the DP).
We discovered this halfway through shooting today, and decided to keep shooting letterbox because it will be easier to convert the squeezed footage to letterbox than vice versa.
Oh, and the squeezed footage is all outdoors, the letterboxed all indoors, so matching isn't an issue.
    My question(s) is (are):
How would you deal with this (reshoots are out of the question)?
Is there a simple way to convert the footage I've already edited without losing the edits?
Is there a magical fix that will fix it without any effort on my part? (just kidding about that last one)
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the tips!
What is your final output hoping to be? Do you need
anamorphic enhancement? (ie. you're outputting to
DVD, or for display on a 16:9 monitor, or for film)
It will be on DVD ultimately, but projected digitally for the premiere and possibly sent to festivals. It just needs to be widescreen, enhanced or not.
I take it your existing sequence is 16:9?
    Yes.
    If so...
    1. Open a new 4:3 sequence in the timeline.
    2. Drag your existing 16:9 sequence into the 4:3
sequence but don't let go of the mouse
    3. Press and hold the Command key, then release the
    mouse.
    4. The contents of your 16:9 sequence should
now be inserted (as letterboxed clips) into the 4:3
    sequence
I'll try this when I get home.
Or, when you meant 'convert the footage,' where you
    talking about the source files?
If it's as easy as those steps, great! However, the two formats need to output to DVD together. I assume this will simply add more render time to that end?
I don't care about the source files if I can ultimately output it harmoniously.
    Thanks again!

  • 16:9 Pan Scan or Letterbox or Both ?????

i am helping a friend make a dvd and the video was shot in 16:9
    in DVDSP do i select...
    16:9 Pan-Scan
    16:9 Letterbox
    16:9 Pan-scan & Letterbox
we have no clue the difference between them
    thanks a lot

    Hi guys,
My problem is that I captured all my footage already in 16:9 letterboxed and when I burn a DVD of my project with DSP 4 and play it on my HDTV it still letterboxes the image not only creating bars on the top and bottom but on the right and left side as well, thus not showing my video in my HDTV's full screen. Can anyone help me?
If I turn on the anamorphic settings in the FCP 6.04 sequnce and or in DSP 4, the image does fill my HDTV screen but it squahes it, with bottom and top letterbox bars still showing.
I'd appreciate a response back to my email in case I can't find this thread again:

  • Letterbox stretching aspect ratio dvx100a help!!!

I shot video on my dvx100a camera in letterbox mode. My manual says letterbox means 16:9.
In FCP I captured using easy set-up NTSC and 48KHZ 720x480.
    Maybe that is wrong?
Anyway I noticed the image looks stretched in the viewer. If I uncheck anamorphic in all my clips the image looks normal. But when I export video edited this way to FCSP or just to quicktime I have black bars not only on the top and bottom but also on the sides. It's not terrible but the image is a box within a black box or - how do you say? floating on black.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? I tried capturing with 48 KHZ anamorphic and got the same thing.
Anything I can do? And if there is something I can do, does that mean I need to recapture all my video using a different capture setting?

I own the DVX100B, essentially same camera. In Letterbox mode, those black bands are already burned into the 4:3 frame. The manual states "Black bands are recorded at the top and bottom of the image."
Therefore, I would guess you should capture as ordinary NTSC 48K. Then you can scale the image up into a 16:9 sequence if you want but it will degrade the picture accordingly. But at least your aspect ratio won't change.
The Panasonic DVX100A/B is a great camera but you should not film using Letterbox mode. You could try the Squeeze mode, but the best method for getting 16:9 from the DVX100 is buying an $800 Anamorphic lens adapter. I outfitted both my cameras with one. This allows you to use FCP's NTSC 48k Anamorphic capture preset to get the best 16:9 from that camera. But if you must have wide screen, try the Squeeze Mode. Good luck.
    Hope that helps.

  • Help needed with Letterbox issue

    Hi
I am in the middle of creating a movie for DVD and all of a sudden the letterbox effect has started taking place when I import from another movie. The result is that some of my movie has the black bars at the top and the bottom, the rest is "normal".
So I have a couple of questions. Why would the footage I am importing suddenly letterbox when I haven't changed any settings?
If I leave it as it is what will be the end result when I burn it to DVD? Will the clips that have letterboxed show up differently?
How can I fix it? I have read these discussions and read The Missing Manual, however I cannot find an explanation.
    Cheers
    NikkiG

I initially tried to Import all the clips using the Import command. I got a message along the lines of Quicktime couldn't parse it - error 43. Then I tried selecting all the clips and did a copy and paste - that was when it first went into the letterboxing mode. I then tried just dragging and dropping one clip, same thing happened.
I don't have the original footage to re-import as it was donwloaded several months ago, so I can't just re-import the original.
This isn't the end of the world for me as I have a Plan B (make 2 DVDs), however I would rather everything I've filmed was on one. I would also like to see if I can ascertain what caused it so that I don't do it again.

  • Cropping out the letterbox bars for Web export

    All,
I have mini DV footage that was shot in letterbox mode. The actual image is 16x9, but the full frame size is 720x480. There are black letterbox bars on top and bottom.
I would like to export the file for web streaming, but I would like for just the image to be exported, not the black bars. How do I do this?
    Thank you,
    Adam

is this a click and drag thing? or is there a specific frame size # that I need to know?
thank you so much for the quick reply

  • Widescreen with hard disk recorder

I searced on Letterbox and got a ton of posts so I thought I would just ask my question.. hopefully its not too lame.
I have 2 cameras with which I am shooting 16:9. One I am shooting with tapes the other I am using a nnovia quickcapture hard disk recorder.
When I capture into final cut from tape, I get letterboxed footage. When I bring footage in from the hard disk.. its widescreen, no letterbox. Obviously, I need to match the footage. How can I letterbox the footage coming in from the hard disk recorder?
Or, how can I match the footage in terms of dimensions. As an aside, when I use motion to zoom in on a cut I lose the letterboxing that Final Cut generated. How do I replace it?
    Thanks!!

As an aside, when I use motion to zoom in
on a cut I lose the letterboxing that Final Cut
generated. How do I replace it?
    Thanks!!
i can't answer anything else but to above, that should be as simple as putting a widescreen matte on that clip that you're doing a zoom in on.

  • Exporting FCP 16:9 to QT for the web in 16:9?

    Hello everyone,
I recently began doing my projects in 16:9 mode. I shoot them with my GL2's in 16:9, then capture to FCP as usual. FCP then automatically recognizes the 16:9 footage and adjusts everything perfectly for me. I figured out how to get the footage to DVDSP by 'forcing letterbox'. This plays the true 16:9 footage on a widescreen TV perfectly.
Now, I've come to another bridge that I can't seem to cross... that is... exporting the video to QT for the web in 16:9. I did a lot of searching here and all of the topics related to this did not help me at all. So, what I'm going to do is explain what I used to do when I shot in 4:3 mode:
    1. In FCP... File>Export>QT Conversion
    2. Format: QT Movie> Options
    3. Settings> Sorenson Video 3
    4. Frame Rate>15
    5. Key Frames: Every 150 frames
    6. Compressor> Medium
    7. Data Rate: Automatic
    8. OK
    9. Sound>Settings>Mpeg-4 Audio, 16bit, Stereo
    10. OK
    11. Prepare for Internet Streaming> Fast Start
    12. OK
    13. SAVE
This usually turns a full sized 5 minute clip into a nice little presentation for the web no larger than 35 or so MB's. You can see a boat load of files like that on my website at (www.buerhausdesign.com).
Now, what I want to do is get a similar sized video for the web, only in 16:9 as I'm now shooting and editing in 16:9.
Does anyone have step-by-step instructions on how to do this? I know it's possible as I see movie trailors in 16:9 all the time in QT.
    Any help would be appreciated:)
    Matt

Nope, tried all of that. It stretches the image way beyond 16:9. Currently, if I export as a 4:3 file, the widescreen displays correctly, but I get two black bars at the top and bottom of the frame. Manually sizing to a 16:9 size, to say 720x404, stretches everything... including the unwanted black bars.
When I export to DVDSP, the black bars go away when I 'force letterbox'. There's gotta be a way to get it to work in QT.

  • Saving 16:9 project in 3G

I have created a movie shot in native HD with a Sony HDV-XL camera. I am attempting to save the edited 1m:07s project for display from the transflash card on my Samsung 3G video enabled phone. I cannot seem to get it to render in 16:9 format. It comes out 4:3, very out of aspect. Help!

I'm not real up on the latest details of 3G video implementation but, last I heard, it could not handle anamorphic 16:9 video.
The only option that comes to mind is to letterbox your 16:9 material and export that.
Now, to letterbox your HD material means, to my knowledge, that you have to downconvert the HD footage to anamorphic SD, then letterbox that (16:9 SD, that is). Once letterboxed, you should be able to export to 3GPP.
(Though hopefully someone more versed in HD downconverts will chime in.

  • Field dominance? converting progressive to 10 bit uncomp for beta output

    Hi,
I shot my film on an HVX 200 720p60 format. So the field dominance of my timeline is set to none.
I am now trying to convert this footage to 4:3 SD letterboxed by putting the QT file of the completed film into a timeline with settings 720x486, 10 bit uncompressed, 29.97. I'm looking to output the film to a beta sp master and I don't know what field dominance to set it to.
    Thanks

Do you have a capture card? Not to be snide or anything, just asking. Because the cards have, in their interfaces (AJA control Panel for example) options for full screen and letterbox.

  • Help please with capture / sequence settings for DVCAM PAL 16:9

Simple question but I'm baffled by choices for capture/sequence using FCP6 to capture 16:9 PAL DVCAM. Have tried esay set up (not enough options) and also sequence and capture settings manually too many options ) and always seem to end up with borders top and bottom, not full viewer / canvas at correct aspect ratio. Can someone tell me correct settings. I'm baffled by inclusion of 5:4 aspect ratio and whether in the compression box under advanced settings in the sequence settings bow I should select 4:3 or 16:9 and in the seq. settings box itself whether I should check anamorphic 16:9.In audio/video settings (summary tab) there's also a question about playback settings which is set to '(missing) apple firewire pal 720x568'. What's that about. Any assistance much appreciated.

Don't over think it. There's no reason why you should have to modify a capture preset in your situation. Use the easy setup for DV PAL 48 KHz Anamorphic (assuming your footage is anamorphic and not letterboxed). If you're seeing gray bars at the top and bottom of the canvas, hit ctrl-U to have the windows automatically adjusted to the right size. If you're seeing black bars, then your footage is probably letterboxed. You should use the regular DV PAL easy setup to capture that. If the Video Playback device is set to (missing) it's because your deck or camera is not turned on, or isn't connected to the computer.

  • How to Create a 1280 x 960 project?

Cannot find a way to create a project from scratch in 4:3 HD apect ratio. I´ve tried adding a video from my Gopro, others created in imovie, photoshop, or quicktime; but always comes the window: "video properties are not recognized"
The workaround I found for another project was to create a bigger size frame, that contained the 1280 x 960 footage, and then cut the letterbox with compressor and exported just I wanted. Really time consuming because compressor is TREMENDOUSLY slow and buggy.
But on this new project I´m working with stills, and I need to see my 1280 x 960 frame inside fcpx, because many of the pictures move, zoom and pan; and if the workspace is bigger than final export, I´m driving blind.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Pablo

Hard to say why you're getting beachballs. Could be hardware, Could be software. Could be project.
How are drives for free space…at least 20% on your systems drive and your media drive?
BTW. are your systems and media drives separate?
Could be 3rd party apps or plug-ins… anything recently added?
Create a new project copy original sequence and paste into new project.
    Good luck.
