Aging and slowing computer, time to replace RAM?

I have a late 2008 Black MacBook with 4gb 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM and about 45gb (of 250gb) of free space on my HD. Lately, my poor MacBook has been getting extremely slow even with the most mundane of tasks like checking my email. I notice that my memory usage fluxuates a lot more and the computer gets significantly hotter lately than it did in the past, so I'm thinking that the problem is related mostly to that more than anything else. What I'm trying to figure out is whether replacing the RAM would solve this problem, or if this problem may be related to something else. Please let me know your thoughts, or if other diagnostic material is needed to help further troubleshoot.

If the computer is working, then the RAM is fine. RAM doesn't slow down with age. You have other problems - maybe not enough RAM.
Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with a visit to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:

For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Data Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. SyncTwoFolders
6. Synk Pro
7. Synk Standard
8. Tri-Backup

Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications

Slow computer after logicboard replacement/ any way to retrieve 18 month old receipts

I purchased a Macbook Pro in August of 2008 and have been generally pleased with it. About a month ago it stopped turning on so I brought it in to the Apple store. They claimed that the video card was fried and that they would need to replace the entire logic board. The computer has been out of warranty for a little while now so I was seriously debating shelling out the $330 to replace the logic board. The genius guy assured me that it would run like new once it was replaced so I went ahead and did it. When I got it back, I soon noticed that everything was running slower. Over the last month, the computer has gotten so slow its almost unusable, so I started snooping into the computer a little bit. I noticed that I had 2 gb of memory. I think I originally installed 4 gb of memory but I cant be sure. I checked for the receipt but its nowhere to be found. Not too surprising considering how long its been sicne I originally bought the computer. I looked up the standard specs on everymac.com and found that 2 gb was the baseline. I am pretty sure Ive upgraded the memory on every computer I've ever gotten which further deepens my suspicion. Now, I dont know for sure if I actually had 4 gb of memory and I dont want to start ranting and raving at the apple store about how the evil repairmen stole 2 gb of memory from me if I am not sure. Does anyone know of a way to check what was originally in my computer? If it turns out im simply forgetful, does anyone have any ideas about the slow computer following logicboard replacement? Firefox gets slower and slower over time.

I have been using firefox for some time, Like it better than Safari generally, but I've noticed (and it has gotten worse with 3.6.x) that if you leave FF running for extended periods of time it gets slower and slower, does not seem to matter if add-ons are installed or not, and it gets REALLY bad after going in and out of flash based apps/games a couple times. It is not just a mac problem as this behaviour also happens on windows xp or newer, but windows OS needs to be rebooted daily anyways so most people won't notice.

Proceed with [[Basic Troubleshooting]] first of all.
You could also try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

Macbook Pro 2011 loud fans and slow computer functioning?

Today my Macbook has suddenly begun to act slow and the fans are running quite loud. I read online that I should try checking the activity moniter, and I did this, and a program is currently taking a large portion of my CPU. However, I am unable to quit it and I'm sure it is the problem. In one of the description fields it is lableled "root" and says "kernel_task". Someone please help me out!

Actually I'm still running snow leopard. But this problem is confusing me so badly. I have tried several times to totally restart the computer by holding down the power button for a few seconds. The MacBook restarts fine but upon startup the fans start running loud again and the Performance of the computer is clearly slower than normal. For example, when I maneuver with the trackpad down to the dock the icons are very slow to respond. Also, normally upon startup my keyboard illuminates upon viewing the log in screen, however for some reason this is not happening either.
I hope someone on here has the solution to this it would be greatly appreciated.

Slow computer even though replaced hard drive.

I made a post before about this issue but I didn't get many replies. Going to make it very brief incase the old post was just TLDR kinda thing.
First, my computer was running very slow, so slow that everything became unresponsive. The hard drive light was "busy" always yet my CPU usage was fine and no processes were causing it to do this. Starting up my computer took a good 8-10 min.
I restarted my computer thinking it'd fix itself but I get the error "Windows has failed to start. A recent hard ware or software change..." I attempt to repair using various repair methods I've seen, CD, the option at start up, etc.... It always comes back with "It could not be repaired automatically, send to Windows.... etc"
Me & boyfriend become convinced it's hard drive failure since his laptop he bought only 5 months after mine experienced hard drive failure (experiencing the same SLOW symptoms & errors) but he was covered under BestBuy warranty. I did not purchase it..
I bought a new harddrive http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I9J5OG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER and then use my WIndows 7 Upgrade CD and installed Windows 7 unto the brand new hard drive.
The computer works PERFECTLY and runs amazingly fast for the whole day/night.
I then wake up the next morning and I am stunned to find my computer is having the symptoms of what the old hard drive had yet again. It ran SO SLOW and eventually became unresponsive. After restarting the computer, the error came again "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or...." Again, all start up repairs come up with nothing saying "Could not be fixed automatically. Send more info to Windows."
Now, everytime I start my laptop it takes a good 8-10 min to get to my desktop. To get to the WIndows login screen takes about 5 min alone.
I've completely replaced a hard drive and STILL have the same problems. What else can I do? What is going on?

IMac crashing randomly and slow boot time.

My mid 2011 27" 2.7GHz i5 iMac has been crashing/powering off to black screen randomly. Apple just replaced the logic board and power supply last week. I have not had any more crashes yet, but on startup I get a white screen that will last for 1 whole minute at times before I finally get the Apple logo to appear. Can someone please tell me about how long my boot time should be and what could be the problem. Also my Mac keeps not seeing my External Hard drive Time Machine Backup. It will be working fine and then act like the drive is not connected. This seems to have started after Apple replaced my logic board and power supply. This is my first Mac ever and Im starting to get really frustrated!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Extremely slow computer even after replacing hard drive. Please help.

The problem started when I upgraded to lion (I think). I also run VMware fusion with windows 7 so maybe a virus? I ran disk utilities, followed suggestions on these communities to no avail. Our IT person and then apple support told me I should replace the hard drive. So I did. I played around a little bit and everything seemed good. Then I did a full restore from time capsule and everything is going downhill again. Any suggestions on a next step?

Fast disk and slow shipping times?

Hi,
I ordered MBP (with 4GB RAM and 200GB 7200rpm hard drive) from a Finnish reseller a month ago. Question is what's taking so long? Is it because of the RAM or hard drive? Is this normal? Please let me know if you have same kind of experiences. This would be my first mac so I might be too impatient =)

Sadly purchasing from Resellers often takes a considerably longer amount of time than ordering directly from Apple when a custom configuration is involved.
You may wish to contact the reseller you purchased from and request an update as to how things are coming.

Java kills my Safari and slows computer

Everytime I run into Java (script or applet) while surfing on Safari it takes forever to load (at least 3-4 minutes) then slows down every other application until I quit Safari (i.e. copying and pasting in Word takes 5x as long if Safari is running in the background-but only after loading Java). I have all my Safari and Java updates installed. I have emptied my cache, cleared my history, trashed my safari icons folder and set it to read only, I've turned off all my auto-fill preferences, and I even trashed and reinstalled Safari, preferences and all. I have always had issues with Safari and Java, but things seem to be worse since I upgraded to Tiger. Only have this problem on my Powerbook, my G4 tower (which is 3 years older) has no problem loading or running Java, even after the Tiger upgrade. I thought it might be a memory thing, so I ran a hardware test, but everything passed. Any thoughts?

Nevermind. I found my answer! I just cleared my Java cache (duh!) If anyone else has a similar problem go to: Applications>Utilities>Java> and open your plug-in settings, click the cache tab and click clear. Worked like a charm. Java loads instantly now, and no slowing down other apps either!! Woo-Hoo! I unchecked "enable caching" to keep it from happening again, of course you can limit your cache size too.

IMac mail is frozen and slows computer, occasional screen flicker.

Anybody got a fix for frozen mail? It seems to slow down the machine and I've also noticed a flicker/buzz style jump to the screen occasionally and thinking it is related.

iMacs are not designed to have the graphics cards upgraded. If your old card is bad and you feel competent to exchange it for the same one that's really your only GPU option. Apple never said the iMac GPU's were upgradeable and frankly I've never heard of anyone successfully upgrading an iMac GPU.
As far as the adaptor well you could bring your system into an Apple Store and have it checked out by a Genius, it's a free service. I don't know how to make a reservation in Japan but I'm sure you can from the Japanese Apple site. The link in the US is:

How do ya get downloadfetcher too auto down load paused downloads too cut on and down load one at time have slow computer wont download but one at time

was told by friend something about an addon or a way when ya have muptable downloads in download area that they can be stored and then cut on or set up somehow where ya can turn on where all the downloads that are on pause mode can be down loaded one at a time have old and slow computer cant down load two or more at one time thonkssssssss

Time machine slows computer

When TM does its hourly thing the computer slows dramatically for abut 5 minutes. Is it supposed to?
If this is correct, is there a way I can ask TM to forget the hourly back up and do a daily only?

on an older and slower computer like yours (your profile indicates 1GHz iMac G4) this will happen, yes. I had this problem with my powerbook. Try [TimeMachineEditor|http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor> to change the backup intervals.

Blackberry runs slower every time!?

When i synchronize my bb with my computer, it seems like it runs slower and slower every time {moving from screen to screen, or sending messages}. why is this? i found that if i reset it often, it helps, but i do not want to have to do this everytime! help!

You're lucky I'm so nice and zipped the files for you lol...j/k. Unzip the files to your media card, browse to the folder and open the .jad file. It should install it for you. This version is for OS 4.5 which I'm guessing you have.

Page not found, slow loading times CC Files

Hi,
Two weeks ago I reported that there were CC files problems like 'page not found' errors and slow loading times and pages not even showing anything. Those problems were temporarily resolved but are back as of today.
Please fix this because for me this is not workable and I guess for many others. I've already moved part of my design files away from CC Files and am now reaching the point were I want to abandon this beta-ware altogether.
I'm living in Europe, maybe this gives additional info. Maybe server problems only in this continent?

So what product would you advice me to file this bug report under? There is no Creative Cloud Files entree or similar.
I'm not sure I'm taken by Adobe support channels policies. if I tweet a complaint some employee tell me I'll be called back by support. Instead of being called back I get asked per email to report on the community forums, when I post on the forum someone tells me to file a bug report. Ehhh...
Time to move on.
