Slow computer even though replaced hard drive.

I made a post before about this issue but I didn't get many replies. Going to make it very brief incase the old post was just TLDR kinda thing.
First, my computer was running very slow, so slow that everything became unresponsive. The hard drive light was "busy" always yet my CPU usage was fine and no processes were causing it to do this. Starting up my computer took a good 8-10 min.
I restarted my computer thinking it'd fix itself but I get the error "Windows has failed to start. A recent hard ware or software change..." I attempt to repair using various repair methods I've seen, CD, the option at start up, etc.... It always comes back with "It could not be repaired automatically, send to Windows.... etc"
Me & boyfriend become convinced it's hard drive failure since his laptop he bought only 5 months after mine experienced hard drive failure (experiencing the same SLOW symptoms & errors) but he was covered under BestBuy warranty. I did not purchase it..
I bought a new harddrive http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I9J5OG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER and then use my WIndows 7 Upgrade CD and installed Windows 7 unto the brand new hard drive. 
The computer works PERFECTLY and runs amazingly fast for the whole day/night.
I then wake up the next morning and I am stunned to find my computer is having the symptoms of what the old hard drive had yet again. It ran SO SLOW and eventually became unresponsive. After restarting the computer, the error came again "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or...." Again, all start up repairs come up with nothing saying "Could not be fixed automatically. Send more info to Windows."
Now, everytime I start my laptop it takes a good 8-10 min to get to my desktop. To get to the WIndows login screen takes about 5 min alone.
I've completely replaced a hard drive and STILL have the same problems. What else can I do? What is going on?

    The problem started when I upgraded to lion (I think). I also run VMware fusion with windows 7 so maybe a virus? I ran disk utilities, followed suggestions on these communities to no avail. Our IT person and then apple support told me I should replace the hard drive. So I did. I played around a little bit and everything seemed good. Then I did a full restore from time capsule and everything is going downhill again. Any suggestions on a next step?

  • Our computer crashed, we replaced hard drive, and now we can't get Photoshop to open.

    One of our computers crashed and we had to replace the hard drive. Now we can't get Photoshop to open. Since the computer didn't give us any warning we didn't get to deactivate Photoshop before the crash. I've been on the Adobe site for over an hour getting run around in circles without getting even close to finding a solution. Apparently, there are no living humans at Adobe and their customer care department consists of this "community" and a lot of redundant web pages. Decent customer service would be a nice touch for such a big company.

    So sorry for your troubles.  This is a user-to-user forum & we're all just product users like you.  Unfortunately, we can't help you with deactivation/activation issues since we don't work for Adobe.

    I Was skyping with a friend went to do something came back i was sighnd out of skype and my computer froze i restarted then it gave me a blinking file witch means failing hard drive so i put in my old hard drive that i knew works and still gives me a blinking file macbook pro 08 running on mavricks osx and somthing been running down ram for awhile to where it was not usable i had to keep running memory clean

    A blinking folder, possibly alternating with a question mark, says your Mac could not find the drive in the last-specified location. Although this COULD be caused by a failed drive, it could also be caused by your Mac simply forgetting the drive you specified in System preferences > Startup Disk.
    If unsure what drives are available, hold down Alt/Option at startup, and a ROM routine will slowly draw an Icon for each potentially-bootable Volume it can find. Select the one you want and proceed, but be sure to quickly re-specify the Startup Disk.

  • Cost of replacing hard drive on my powerbook G4

    I bought my powerbook about 2 years ago and to be honest, have loved it a lot. Today after a coffee break, I sat to work on my PB and it was very slow...then began a host of problems which have ended with it not starting up. I have done disk utility tests which found a problem with my hard drive that it couldn't repair. I am also unable to reinstall OS. A hardware test revealed that there is an error with my hard drive. My important documents have been backed up so am not too upset about that but I don't want to spend heaps of cash getting it repaired. For those Aussies out there, would anybody know the approximate cost of replacing the hard drive? Would it be cheaper to buy the HDD myself and try to replace it myself. I could get the IT guys from where I work to replace it. And yes, my PB is out of warranty! Also, should I aim to replace this HDD with the same one thats now busted, or should I replace it with a better one. Apart from increased space, what other benefits would an upgraded HDD give me (I have a 60 GB hard drive, 1.33 GHz).

    My sentiments are very similar to Matt's, though my hard drive experiences have tended to be with either Seagate or Hitachi products. Generally I would also agree that another Toshiba drive is to be avoided.
    For cache, it is always better to go for more - minimum of 8MB. As a very broad indication of what to purchase, something along the lines of 8MB, 5400RPM, 80-120GB.
    Also be aware that not all drives are the same, even if their general specifications are the same. For example, Hitachi produce different versions of their 7200 RPM 100GB Travelstar - not only in Ultra ATA and Serial ATA versions, but also a version designed for extended power-on usage. Drives from different manufacturers may also have varying technologies built into them. Something else to consider is the length of warranty. Some manufacturers offer longer terms than others.

  • I need to install CS6 on a replacement hard drive and need help with deactivation/reactivation

    I have had a major hard drive crash that is resulting in my replacing the drive in my Mac with a new one, then re-installing my programs onto it. I have a copy of CS6 on the current bad hard drive that is activated. Do I need to deactivate it before installing it on my new hard drive even though it will be on the same computer, just a different hard drive? If so, how can I deactivate it when the drive the Creative Suite is on is bad? Is there a place on Adobe's website that I can log in and manage my activations if I have to deactivate in order to put CS6 on my replacement drive?

    hi. I have the exact same problem. I'm getting the 'configuration' error, and my uninstall application for each application with CS6 'can't be found' since it is apparently an alias. I'm not getting any answers from Adobe and getting frustrated. Would simply like to know how to uninstall or start from scratch. I'll let you know if I hear anything. I posted the question on the 'creative suites' forum.

    Is it difficult or advisable to replace the hard drive in my PowerBook myself? Or do I need to bring it into a shop?
    I've installed memory in desktop Macs, so I'm comfortable opening a computer. I've never opened a PowerBook, though.

    If you want someone to do it for you, you can search here for the closest Apple store or Apple Authorized Service Provider: http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/ . Note, if you have an Apple store replace your hard drive, they will keep the replaced hard drive. If you use an AASP, you can determine before hand if you want your drive back. Some people have private data on a hard drive, and even if it's dead, would prefer not to have it permanently leave their hands.

    I had tried COMMAND+ALT+R which led me to directly to INTERNET RECOVERY via wifi. After 1 hour or so it dropped me at the same point.
    I've tried MIGRANT ASSISTANCE as well, it kept on LOOKING FOR OTHER COMPUTERS even though I clicked on TIME MACHINE BACK UP USING EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
    so what to do now?
    P.S. Guys at MacStore were so careless to even listen to me when I asked them about retrieving back up :(

    I work for a university and we have a legal apple vendor who we get to buy all our Apple products from.Can we (university) re-install macosx for a replacement hard drive once the hard drive gets replaced? How can we as the university IT department legally re-install macosx on a imac,macbook, macbookair etc. We would like to load customized macosx imaging software onto the mac machines(imac, macbook, etc ). The university has its own IT workshop and we would like our users to get their laptops back in the shortest turnaround time.

    So whatever we say is not an official statement, nor does it in any way, shape, or form represent the official or unofficial policies or opinions of Apple, Inc.
    But I'll offer my quick opinion, having worked in information-systems and technology support in a wide variety of environments over many years.
    Question #1. "NO!"
    No tech support nor repair facility, even if "Apple-authorized", is automatically empowered to install or upgrade OS X on a replacement hard drive just because it is more convenient or time-efficient. When the repair is complete, the student should be expected to (re)install the operating system themself*!
    Nurturing students (and occasionally dragging them, screaming and kicking!) as budding computer-, tablet-, smartphone-users to become digitally self-sufficient is a worthy goal that any institution of higher education must pursue.
    Making students totally dependent upon "Mother Support" for every little thing about their personal digital devices is a grave disservice to both the students and the people who provide the support. Support-mothered students do become life-long digital dependents, instead of taking the required time to learn enough about the care and feeding of their digital "pets" to sustain them. Entreprenurial students may choose to become 'experts' and actually help each other with their devices, and even make money doing it. Some students may even be inspired/coerced to pursue a career in tech support!!!
    *By all means, if the student requests additional help (re-installing the OS), then the University should charge the student a fair price for the service, provided that the user provides the OS on original or upgrade media, or in the case of the 'digital download' upgrades (for OS X 10.7 and 10.8) provides proof of purchase for the OS upgrade, or the original purchase receipt or other recognized documentation for the purchase of the computer showing the version of OS installed when purchased. Students need to learn about personal responsibility, economics ("What is MY time really worth"?), and proper record-keeping too!
    Question #2. Regarding the customized imaging software, provide it on media or a link for students to download and install it. Make it their responsibility!

    It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
    Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
    Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
    The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

  • Can I boot my computer from an external hard drive

    I have already used the (internal) hard drive to boot my computer. If it is bootable while outside the computer, that is only the (internal) hard drive being outside the computer running while the computer is on then I will buy an external herd drive enclosure so that it can do so.

Not only is it an inconvenience to swap them, but it is not an activity that is usually expected to be performed by most users, so likely this part is not meant to be used for that and that would make it not built for multiple hard drives swaps making it prematurely wear out.
    That is exactly correct. We do not do that.
    It is not necessary to get inside your computer to connect a hard drive. You can connect a second (or third, or even more) drive externally. And if the drive is correctly formatted, you can boot from it. An external hard drive enclosure costs less than < $10. You install the drive in the enclosure, and you can connect it externally to a usb port on the computer.
    A typical enclosure for a SATA laptop drive looks like this:

    In summary then, keep one drive inside the computer. Always. Use any other drives you need as externals. If you have many external usb devices, plug them into a powered hub. This way nothing needs to be regularly connected and disconnected.

    If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:

    One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:

    You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
    defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
    You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
    If Safari seems to hang for ages:
    If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
    Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
    Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
    Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

  • G62-234DX replaced hard drive with new Samsung 250 GB. Same size as installed.

    G62-234DX  Hard drive dead.  I replaced hard drive with new Samsung 250 GB. SATA II hard drive and used the recovery Windows 7 Home edition DVD.  Error message appeared after windows loads files and starts windows from the recovery DVD.  An error dialog box opens after completing and indicates, This computer is not supported by the recovery discs.  You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs.  error: 0100-1425 -3627-3628-3623-3624.   Hit OK and system powers down.

  • My New Computer and My External Hard Drive Not Compatible

    I just purchased a brand new Dell Inspiron with windows 8.  I had a Seagate back up hard drive on my old Dell.  I wanted to move some things (especially my pictures) to the new computer from the external hard drive, but when I tried to install, I get a message "Operating System Not Supported".  Now what?  I'm somewhat technologically challenged.

    You need to go into your BIOS settings and make sure that the external drive isn't set to boot.
    An easier way around this is to unplug the drive from the computer until it has fully loaded.
    If that doesn't work, post back.

  • What is the easiest way to tell if your time capsule has backed up your hard drive, as my mac has been recalled for a replacement hard drive

    Your views would be appreciatted, my imac has recently been recalled for a replacement hard drive, would it be easier just to purchase a external hard drive to be on the safe side for backing up my photos etc?
    I have a 1GB time capsule but to be honest not sure how it operates it states it oldest back up is the 11th October
    201GB of 998 available or would it best to buy a external hard drive and back up using this.

    You are very wise.. !!
    It can be awfully hard restoring the Mac from TM.. as many posters here have discovered.
    IMHO.. for certainty.. get an external drive.. they are not expensive.. do a full backup to it.
    I would even download superduper and make a clone of the existing drive and boot from it.. this means when the Mac is returned if all else fails.. you can use the external clone as a boot and have exact OS as you have right now.
