AIR 3.6 and MXML Applications ?

My goal here is to compile an mxml application in FB 4.7 in order to have retina quality display.
In order to do so, I followed the instructions to overlay the air sdk in FB 4.7 with the new air 3.6 sdk (AIR 3.6 SDK with ActionScript Compiler 2.0).
I also followed the instructions in the air 3.6 sdk releasenote, and in order to enable retina display I changed the namespace to 3.6 in my application descriptor file, and I also add an xml line as explained.
Now my mxml project won't compile, the error being :
Processus terminé de manière inattendue.
DVFreeThread - CFMachPortCreateWithPort hack = 0x2688e70, fPowerNotifyPort= 0x26888a0
DVFreeThread - CFMachPortCreateWithPort hack = 0x59b6d0, fPowerNotifyPort= 0x599530

Then I read that "AIR 3.6 SDK with ActionScript Compiler 2.0" is only useful to compile AS3 project and won't work with mxml applications... Maybe that's why I have compilation problem ?
My question is : Is it possible to compile mxml projects in Retina mode with Flash Builder 4.7 ?

Cool it works ! Thank you Chris
I am on Mac and relatively to these instructions I just overwrote files folder by folder (as Mac OS overwrite method is less subtle than windows one I suppose).

• Passing VARs between MXML Application and MXML components!

Hi,
I'm trying to pass a variable between the MXML Application and the MXML Component with ValueObjects.
But when i call the variable on the MXML Component it is null!

<mx:LinkButton x="474" y="5" label="moda" click="AbreGaleria()"/>
</mx:Canvas>
<mx:ViewStack id="content" height="440" width="815" borderStyle="none" x="2" y="128">

</mx:ViewStack>
</mx:Panel>
</mx:Application>
MXML Component Code:

<mx:TitleWindow xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
showCloseButton="true" creationComplete="CenterMe()" backgroundColor="#000000" xmlns:components="components.*" >
<mx:Script>

import valueObjects.MyGlobalVars;
import mx.controls.Alert;
[Bindable]
public var strGaleria:String;
private function CenterMe(): void{
Alert.show(strGaleria);

</mx:Script>
</mx:TitleWindow>
On the MXML component the value of strGaleria is null! It would not have to be: Moda??

You may need to change your code as follows:
<comp:galeriaImagens id="GaleriaImagens" x="0" y="5" strGaleria="{nomeGaleria.NomeGaleria}"/>
Previously you had set strGaleria to the value of the object, not the string within the object.
But I think you will still have a problem because function AbreGaleria will not be called until the user clicks the link button, and only then will NomeGaleria have a value, so I would set a default value as follows, otherwise at app launch it will be null:
public var NomeGaleria: String = "";
or if that does not work
public var NomeGaleria: String = " ";
Another possible problem is that you are calling this code at the component creationComplete, but the LinkButton has not been clicked yet, so the value object string value has not been set, so the alert will not display anything:
private function CenterMe():void{
Alert.show(strGaleria);
I think you need to reorganize some things here.

• Create installer file to install AIR and my application

I want to create an installer file that will package the AIR runtime along with my AIR application and install both for the user. I would also like this installer file to install the Java runtime and a Java application that my AIR app will interact with via AIR's Native Process API. This thread mentions many possible installers:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/759855/what-are-good-installanywhere-replacements-for-i nstalling-a-java-ee-application
I'm wondering if any of you have had to do this with AIR applications and have a recommended installer or know of any reasons this might not work well with AIR apps.
Thanks!

One thing you can do is bundle the JRE installer with your AIR app. Your app installer will be the usual AIR installer and only install the AIR portion. The first time the user runs the AIR app, the AIR app can validate the JRE version and if it's not adequate then it can initiate the JRE installer. The is sometimes a nice way to go because you can continue using the AIR update framework and push newer versions of the JRE installer with new versions of your AIR app, if necessary. Here's more info:

Tried my k3772-z modem to connect macbook air to internet and got the message: you can't use this application with this version of mac os x. Is there a setting that needs to be changed?

I can't help you with a direct answer. For third-party devices you should contact the vendor (Vodafone).
If you have an iPhone (or an Android phone with hot-spot capability) you can use that to connect to the Internet without paying for a separate cellular service.

How long do you leave it?
Mine can sometimes sit for quite a while (maybe 10 minutes??) before it finally finishes.
You could look at the relevant logs via Console (Utilities folder) to see if Software Update is complaining about anything.

• AIR, Fonts, CS4 and the security sandbox

I have no idea why embedding fonts in CS4 using library->new font includes every european character EXCEPT polish. You have german, french, spanish, norwegian, but not polish. Well, since embedding a font from Flash is the only way to use bitmap fonts in Flex, I had to create a library of external font files, one SWF per font size and style. Such an SWF exposes several functions, such as returning a ready to use pre-formatted textfield, returning the font name (Such as Tahoma) and the font name you actually need to use (such as Tahoma_13pt_st).
I thought I'd need an AIR application to parse through all the fonts (and there are quite a few) extract the neccesary data, such as font size, name and so on and generate an XML file, so that I can load fonts at dynamic.
The first problem I encountered was the security sandbox. A possible solution was to use the loaderInfo.childSandboxBridge. That approach didn't work however, as I was generating plain SWF files from flash CS4. childSandboxBridge is an AIR property, so I had to create an AIR file and try to set the bridge property to a simple number. So I did, but it gave me a
SecurityError: Error #3206: Caller app:/TahomaBold13.swf cannot set LoaderInfo property childSandboxBridge.
Weird. Well, I reverted the file to plain CS4 FPL10 SWF and decided to try another approach. I first loaded the SWF as a FileStream, then put the bytes into Loader.loadBytes. That should take care of security. And it did, however it created another problem.
The font library relies on being able to enumerate the embeded fonts. The SWF's constructor has a function that enumerates all fonts and isolates the font embeded in the SWF, and then extracts it's properties. When launching the SWF by itself, or loading it from another CS4 FPL10 SWF it launches perfectly and enumerates the fonts as it should. However when the SWF is executed from inside AIR, the constructor located in the font file, as well as a function called from the main application upon executing enumerateFonts(false) both give an empty array. Which is quite weird really, as the loaded SWF contains an input TextField with embedded fonts. And I can edit and type stuff in that textfield, even while it's rotated.
I thought this might be an issue of a different flash player version, but I tried to target AIR 1.5 and flash 9, neither worked and both returned no embeded fonts.

I'm hoping some AIR specialists will take a look at this. Frankly I'm stumped. Font support in Flash was always black magic, more or less, so I can only hope this is an issue that can be solved.
Just tell me and I'll provide more source or sceenshots.
Cheers,
-archont

I even tried porting the code to Gumbo and running it there - still, no fonts are being enumerated.
If you're too lazy to read the whole above post, here's the problem in one sentence
An SWF that contains a textfield with embedded fonts, when launched by itself succeeds to return the embedded font using Font.enumerateFonts(false), however when loaded using Loader.loadBytes into AIR, it fails to see those fonts even though the textfield in it is displayed and editable.
How do I make the loaded child application and AIR see the embedded font?

• Flash mobile development - AIR 3.4 and Microphone access

I'm encountering an issue with AIR 3.4 and the new Kindle Fire (2nd gen, non-HD).
There is no microphone, as Amazon's comparison chart illustrates: https://developer.amazon.com/sdk/fire/specifications.html, but AIR is telling me that there is a microphone.
It also reports a value of TRUE for Camera.isSupported and CameraUI.isSupported.
So here's the scoop on Kindle Fire:
1st generation Kindle Fire does not properly support audio capture from within AIR (even with an external Microphone connected). For more information, see: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3197063
2nd generation Kindle Fire doesn't support audio capture unless an external microphone is connected. However, I don't know of a way within AIR to differentiate between headphone or no, because Microphone.isSupported always returns TRUE.
Kindle Fire HD supports audio capture with or without an external mic.
The best metric I know of to handle this, so far, is to use "android.os.Build.MODEL" to disable microphone use for the 1st gen Kindle.
This is kind of clunky though.
It also doesn't allow me to properly handle the 2nd gen Fire because there is no way (that I know of) to determine if the user has a microphone plugged in.
Anyone from Adobe care to weigh-in? (Or anyone that knows an alternative?)
Edit: Here's a test project that I've created that illustrates the problem:

<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" applicationComplete="init()"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" applicationDPI="160">
<fx:Script>

private function init():void {
cameraLabel.text = "Camera: " + Camera.isSupported.toString();
cameraUILabel.text = "CameraUI: " + CameraUI.isSupported.toString();
microphoneLabel.text = "Microphone: " + Microphone.isSupported.toString() + " => " + Microphone.getMicrophone();

</fx:Script>
<s:VGroup horizontalCenter="0" verticalCenter="0">
<s:Label id="cameraLabel" />
<s:Label id="cameraUILabel" />
<s:Label id="microphoneLabel" />
</s:VGroup>
</s:Application>
Running this program on a 2nd gen Kindle Fire results in the following values being displayed on the screen:
Camera: true
CameraUI: true
Microphone: true => [object Microphone]

You can read this from the "/system/build.prop" file on Android.
Funky Monkey Studio has released a nice utiltiy class for doing this, NativeDeviceInfo.

• Web application and desktop application?

Hi everyone,
I am new to this platform.I have a basic doubts that whats the difference between developing application in flex as a web application and desktop application from programming point of view?Can we use same code in both cases?
Please guide me....
Thanks

Hi and welcome,
The main difference between a web application and a desktop application is that web applications do not have access and can't manipulate your local system ( you can't open a window that displays all your local files, you can't delete, rename, edit local files and so on ). Obviously, this is just one difference, there are many more ( the best would be if you google for "web aplication vs desktop application" because the same rules apply for 99% if not all the platforms you can find out there ).
Desktop applications can have full control of your local system ( obviously, we have to take in consideration the platform we are using because since AIR is quite new in the desktop application field it is also more limited than other languages that have been used successfully to create desktop applications for years and year; like ce C# or C++ and so on ).
Another important difference is that desktop applications usually need to be installed in order to function where on the other hand, web applications can run in the browser without you having to install the aplication you are about to view on your computer ( in some cases, like of the Flash and Flex platforms, you only require a "special player" that can display the content you are trying to access... for Flash and Flex applications you need the Flash Player installed for your browser ).
So, before jumping into a project/platform you need to know your target. If you goal is to offer a fast, easy to access and no install required application to your users then you'll usually go with a web application. If your application needs to work with local files, maybe local databases, or it needs more control over the user's PC and so on, then you'll most likely go with a desktop application.
With kind regards,
Barna Biro

• Flex project vs. mxml application

im totally new to flex and actionscript, coming from traditional web app development. ive been watching videos on lynda.com and it has gone well, but one thing it fails to mention and that i couldnt find in the forums or on google is the difference between creating a flex project and an mxml applciation. what's the difference?
thanks!

I don't know if you have knowledge about java or C#.
The project is a location where you collect all files that you need for your final application: mxml files, as filex, assets ....
The mxml application is the mxml file that inherit mx:Application and is the main file of the project.
Here is the start point of what you see in the browser.
The red circle specify the project and the blue cicrle specify the mxml application.
There is only one default mxml application in each project, but you can have many mxml files (that can be components) or mxml application that are applications.

• Can you wrap a Muse export in Adobe Air to make a desktop application?

Hello,
I was just wondering if it is possible to wrap a Muse HTML folder (whole export) in Adobe Air to make a desktop application? I have managed to wrap the business catalyst URL that Muse gives you temporarily and made a desktop application. As this is temporary is it possible to wrap the entire project (HTML)?
I'm very new to this so i hope this all makes sense.
Thanks in advance,
SPolly

You are not wasting your time. It can be done...
In order to wrap C++ for use by C, you must write wrapper functions declared with 'extern "C"' linkage for every C++ method you intend to call directly from C. This must be done using a C++ compiler. Once linked into a new library, any C exectuable or C library should be able to link this new library and call the wrapper functions you have declared 'extern "C"'.
If you still need more help, I would advise you to post in a C++ language forum perhaps. Best of luck, not that you should need it though... -Ralph

You may have to see about using the Recovery HD partition to attempt to erase and restore useful function of the capacity lost to the former Windows installation.
And you may have to backup your contents outside the computer to do it. Disk Utility on the Mac OS X historically has not been able to touch a BootCamp created partition; so if BootCamp cannot remove it, then you have to see how to do the equivalent of a reformat of the entire drive (less Recovery partition?) then reinstall your OS X. Maybe from internet recovery, then get your applications, etc from the Mac App store, etc.
A complete system clone of your OS X on an external HDD would be another method to restore after reformat, of the portion you want whole again, not necessarily the space where Recovery may live.
There may be (an)other way(s).
Perhaps someone with recent experience
in this matter can reply & discuss options.
With my antiques, they almost know what I want before I tell them.
Hopefully yours will after you talk to it awhile.
Good luck & happy computing!

• 6/10/14 - Release - AIR 14 Runtime and SDK

Today we're pleased to announce that the next version of AIR is available for immediate download.
This update includes the following fixes and security updates:
Security update details can be found here: Security Bulletin (APSB14-14)
New Features:
Anisotropic Filtering
This new texture sampling filter can enhance the image quality of textures on surfaces that are at oblique viewing angles. There are two ways to enable this feature:
In AGAL, set one of the values – "anisotropic2x", "anisotropic4x", "anisotropic8x", or "anisotropic16x" to the filter option in the sampling instructions.
Call Context3D::setSamplerStateAt with the 3rd parameter "filter" being one of the values defined in Context3DTextureFilter - "ANISOTROPIC2X", "ANISOTROPIC4X", "ANISOTROPIC8X", or "ANISOTROPIC16X"
New Stage3D "Standard" Profile
Developers can now request this high level profile when creating Context3D. Three new features are available in this profile:
Multiple render target allows to you to draw geometry to multiple outputs (up to 4) during one drawing
Floating point texture allows you to create Texture, RectangleTexture and CubeTuxture with the RGBA16F folder.
AGAL v2 contains these improvements:
Increased register size
Partial derivative instructions
Fragment depth output
Conditional forward jump
Intel x86 Android Support
As announced in our Flash Runtime blog, we're adding support for Intel x86 Android to AIR. An ADT command line option (-arch) has been added to allow packaging apps with Android x86 support. Please note that currently only captive runtime packaging is allowed for x86 architecture. This means all APK targets (apk, apk-debug and apk-captive-runtime) will forcibly be packaged with captive runtime. Feedback on this approach is encouraged.
Sample APK packaging command for x86 devices:
adt -package -target ( apk | apk-captive-runtime ) -arch x86 -storetype pkcs12 -keystore abc.p12 HelloWorld.apk HelloWorld-app.xml HelloWorld.swf
adt -package -target apk-debug -arch x86 -storetype pkcs12 -keystore abc.p12 HelloWorld.apk HelloWorld-app.xml HelloWorld.swf
Note that -arch is optional. If not specified, armv7 is assumed.
Packaging for x86 architecture in Flash Builder:
Open the debug/run configurations of the project in Flash Builder and click on "Customize launch.." button. Add a new parameter "-arch" with value "x86" and place it before "-storetype". Click "OK" to apply changes.
Except for RTMPE and DRM, all other features and capabilities are completely functional and supported. Native extensions written for x86 platforms can also be packaged and used by an app for x86 devices. To support this, a new ANE platform 'Android-x86' is now available.
The following example highlights the usage of the same -
<extension xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/extension/14.0>

<versionNumber>1.0</versionNumber>
<platforms>
<platform name="Android-ARM">
<applicationDeployment>
<nativeLibrary>sample.jar</nativeLibrary>
<initializer>com.example.ane.Extension</initializer>
<finalizer>com.example.ane.Extension</finalizer>
</applicationDeployment>
</platform>
<platform name="Android-x86">
<applicationDeployment>
<nativeLibrary>sample.jar</nativeLibrary>
<initializer>com.example.ane.Extension</initializer>
<finalizer>com.example.ane.Extension</finalizer>
</applicationDeployment>
</platform>
</platforms>
</extension>
New packaging command for ANE:
adt -package -target ane Sample.ane extension.xml -swc Sample.swc -platform Android-ARM -C Android-ARM/ . -platform Android-x86 -C Android-x86/ .
Improved Packaging Engine - iOS
Based on the feedback received from the developer community, tons of improvements and bug fixes have been made in the new packaging engine for iOS. We encourage developers to report issues to http://bugbase.adobe.com, to ensure that we are able to continue to improve the packager in future releases.
To enable this feature, please use "-useLegacyAOT no" in the ADT command, before the signing options. As of now, this feature is not available within Flash Pro but it can still be used with Flash builder by adding the parameter -useLegacyAOT under the "Customize launch" option.
Here is an example ADT command for compiling an applications using “-useLegacyAOT no":
adt -package -target ( ipa-test | ipa-debug | ipa-app-store | ipa-ad-hoc) -useLegacyAOT no -provisioning-profile -keystore -storetype pkcs12 -storepass xxxx HelloWorld.ipa Helloworld-app.xml HelloWorld.swf

AIR Gamepad
AIR Gamepad feature enables the app developers to provide a second screen on Android mobile devices for the Flash based browser games. AIR Gamepad API enables Flash based browser apps to connect to a paired Android device running the AIR Runtime app and therefore allowing the Android devices to be used as game controllers or second-screen interfaces.
Key functionality of this feature:
Gesture eventsTouch events
Accelerometer events
Vibration
Customize the AIR gamepad screen by applying your own skins
To learn more about the AIR Gamepad APIs, please refer to the documentation found here.

• Adobe AIR Error - Uninstalling and Re-installing does not work?

I keep getting this error everytime I turn n my laptop. I have uninstalled and re-installed Adobe AIR several times and still keep getting this error after it tells me it has been installed successfully. "This installation of this application is damage. Try re-installing or contacting the publisher for assistance." What is wrong with this program? I cannot keep uninstalling and re-installing this program and it is not installing properly.

Pat has a great point and asks a good question. In addition to identifying the AIR application that is causing you problems you may also want to review Troubleshoot AIR installation | Windows - http://helpx.adobe.com/air/kb/troubleshoot-air-installation-windows.html.
