AIR Plug-In Architecture For HTML/AJAX Development?

Hi everyone,
Doing an AIR project. Mentor suggested to do app with plug-in capability, "Great idea! i'll get sraight on it!!" but now..... not so good :'(
I would have a pretty strong background in programming for a student and would hate to srink to the challange but I can't find any documentatin on building a plug-in architecture for AIR? I have developed many apps during my studies but never one with any sort of plugin architecture.
Without any more background into my problem my question is..... does anyone know of any good documentation for me to follow or that i could look through and would set me on the right track in order to create this? Or could you explain briefly how you would go about creating this type of application?
Thank you so much for any help that anyone can give to me in advance, hope you all having a good day,

  • Adobe AIR HTML / Ajax Developement and Android

Just confirming...  I haven't been developing in Flash since the days of Actionscript 2.0.  I've been mostly doing HTML / Ajax dev the past couple of years.  I started playing around with developing apps using HTML and Ajax.  I read in another thread that for Android dev, you have to use flash.  Is this true?  If so, is there any plans to open this up more?  I realize there might be some things that might not translate over, such as the touch interface, but I would really love to create some applications without having to get back into flash or learning Flash Builder.

Joe is correct on the support for HTML & AJAX. If you want to leverage those skills, you are going to have to stick with just using the on device web browser (which should be fairly robust) or look at alternate solutions like PhoneGap or Titanium's Appcelerator.

Look up modules in Flex, that's pretty much what you are looking for.
They can be tricky to develop unless you are doing something pretty simple, but you can take them as far as you want in terms of complexity.
If you are running your app in AIR, just be aware that the module loader can take byte arrays, so you can load modules over the network, and don't have to package them along side your main application.

  • Can air for html/ajax accessing serial port or usb?

I just have made use of Adobe AIR .I want to use printer with
air . Do air have some poperties to accessing serial port or usb?
I look up that on the Adobe AIR documents.I only found
'Adobe® AIR™ provides the eans to check for changes to
the network connectivity of the computer on which an AIR
    application is installed'.
Do you have some demo with Adobe AIR accessing serial port or
    usb ?
Or has another poperties to do that!
    thank you!!

There is no API for accessing the serial port. USB devices
can only be accessed through the file system (and only if they are
    storage devices).

  • Adobe AIR for HTML/JS custom Javascript Scrollbars

    Hi,
I would like to know if it is possible to have custom Javascript scrollbars in an Adobe AIR application.
I have tried many jQuery plugins but nothing can style the scrollbars.
I can only style them via CSS.
Adobe AIR supports javascript scrollbars for HTML / iFrames?

Filed feature request on bugbase. Vote it up if you agree!

  • Why Flex: What Flex can do, but HTML/AJAX can not?

I want to understand the position of Flex in RIA competition. I used Flex because of AdvancedDataGrid and the Charts. It is impossible for HTML to do some thing like these.
The Transition Effects are nice, but not important in enterprise environment. The initial loading time of Flex is much longer than that of HTML although Flex is more reponsive than HTML/AJAX after Flex is loaded.
    Any comments?

It's not always about what it can or can't do--a lot of this is about doing the same thing better.  And think about the origins of Ajax--it's basically a hack.  I know the same can be said about a lot of technologies (even the Internet itself), but why use something that is essentially a hack when you have technology that was engineered for the purpose you have in mind?  Building hacks and fixes upon more hacks and fixes is how we end up with a pile of junk at the end of the day in IT.  It's time to start calling things what they are, hacks, if they are that.
Flex has better performance, if you make use of AMF.
HTML and Ajax can't use AMF and has no counterpoint in this area. AMF is much faster than the crummy Ajax hack can muster (especially once you start throwing crap like Dojo into the mix).
    http://www.jamesward.com/blog/2007/12/12/blazebench-why-you-want-amf-and-blazeds/
Check AMF times compared to JSON Ajax times, bandwidth.
Flex doesn't care about the user's browser.  Sure, the HTML/Ajax hack has frameworks to help you deal with that, but do you really want to worry about upgrading that trash (or framework bugs) when a new version of IE, or Opera, or Firefox, or Chrome, or Safari, or even another browser comes out and breaks something?  A newer version of Flash won't break a Flex app.  Also, other than Chrome, other browser JavaScript implementations are slow, slow, slow.  The more complex your Ajax app gets, the slower it will become--that's lame.
User experience. A well designed Flex UI is much nicer and easier to use than even the best "JavaScript/DHTML" hackfest.  Just look at these new Adobe forums--JavaScript out the wazoo and they suck on anything other than Google Chrome.   It's useful for marketing too--not just for commercial stuff, but marketing to upper management for enterprise applications.  Everyone that looks at a well designed Flex app will be blown away by it.  And then you get your pay raise.  (lol - assuming it works, too)
Superior development experience and development time.  Using Flex Builder you can mock up an entire "seemingly functional" prototype application within a ridiculous amount of time.  You can even run it without a back end or a server of any kind, just a standalone Flash player or browser.  You also have the GUI design mode, that shows you exactly what the user is going to see in the browser--no matter what browser they have, no matter what their settings are, etc.  No more HTML crap to deal with or (God forbid) tehnologies like JSP to generate your dinosaur code.  Documentation goes from the kludge of junk out there for HTML/Ajax/JS/etc to the excellent and very Javadoc-like ASdoc.
And no more choosing between the dozens of hacky and crummy Ajax "framework" patchworks out there, that are needed to workaround all the problems you'd run into without a framework.
That's just what I can recall at the moment.  I will NEVER go back to that God-awful Ajax/HTML hackfest people are calling RIA development.  Sure, Flex has it's issues and downsides too, but they aren't usually major enough to be of concern, even in an enterprise environment.
BTW - It's not really Flex vs. HTML/Ajax.
It's more like Flex vs. HTML/DHTML and AMF vs. Ajax/JSON.  But, Flex can talk to Ajax too, and it can even be embedded in HTML.  Although personally I feel that's a bastardization of the technologies, sometimes I guess people have a need to do these things.

  • Adobe Air HTML & JS Developing - Slow on massive Image-Tags

    Hello,
I want to share a problem i noticed while developing an application with adobe air, based on the HTML & JS Stack, which uses multiple image-tags at the same time. I already mailed a bug but unfortunately did not get a bug number responded to refer to hit here. This post is started because i wanted to share a simple example which exhibits the problem.
    The Bug Report i mailed:
    ******BUG******
Concise problem statement: Performance Issues with massive Image-Tags (scaled)
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Create a simple Air-Application. No need for any Air-specific library we just want the Air-Webkit to render a HTML-Page
    2.  Load ~130 Pictures with a dimension of approximately 1024 x 768 pixels.  Render each of them as a scaled Image-Tag with the dimension 100x60  pixels.
    3. Load the Page in the Air/Safari/Firefox/IE Environment (Versions: Air 2.5, Safari 5.0.2 (Win XP), FF 3.6.10, IE7)
    4. Try scrolling down/left/right/up and resizing the respective stage
Results: The Air Environment performs worst among those 4. It reacts unacceptably slow while trying to resize and to scroll.
Expected results: similar performance to Webkit-Engine in Safari.
I know of one other discussion which seems to be related to a similar thing (http://forums.adobe.com/message/44913).
The Page i used to compare the Adobe-Air rendering & scroll behaviour against the behaviour of Safari, FF and IE is posted beneath (pretty long due to the excerpt of 131 pictures taken of flicker web service).
    with best regards
    Robert

  • Font Anti-Aliasing Issues in HTML/Ajax based Air Applications

It seems that the font-renderer in HTML/Ajax based Air Applications is using some kind of sub-pixel font renderer that is overriding and vastly inferior to the standard Windows ClearType, or any Apple based option as well.  This problem is particularly noticable with light text on a dark background, and made worse the smaller the text is.  I've put together an example image explaining exactly what I mean at: http://regator.com/fontRendering.png   (it's a large image 1126 x 1500 px)
My example shows two fonts at four different sizes rendered in an HTML Air App vs the default Windows Cleartype, as well as using Safari to show the Font style anti-aliasing.  In all cases the HTML Air App rendering is far more difficult to read, and in many cases severely distorts the color of the text in a way that other subpixel algorithms do not.  As far as I can find after literally hours of googling and searching there's no way to override this in HTML based applications.  Is there any solution to this, or a planned fix for the renderer?  Other than this rendering issue, the HTML interface for creating Air apps is absolutely brilliant, this is just making my finished product look significantly less polished than it otherwise would if the text were more readable.
    Thanks.

    Dear caturner81, dear Adobe,
is there a solution to this problem? I'd really love to fix the aliasing thing in Air/HTML!

  • Can I use macbook air for ios app development?

I would like to know if i can use macbook air for ios app development or macbook pro is only option?

Just to reinforce what shldr2thewheel says - be very sure what size memory you want if you get a Macbook Air. There is *no* way to change after purchase. My advice is to go for the 4GB option - especially if you want to do app development.
The internal storage (solid state drive) of the Air can be upgraded if required but it will probably be an expensive option. If you don't think the storage will be enough then maybe using a USB connected drive to hold non-essential files is an option.
As to deciding between the Air and Pro you are basically making a decision between portability (Air) and expandability/bigger screens (Pro). What is more important to you?

  • Obtaining a plug-In prefix for development

    Hello,
reading the Developing Plug-ins and Applications from Adobe Developer Support (April 2007),
it is stated that one needs a prefix for plug-In.
    Where do i get such?
    Thanks.

And be sure to start with the current SDK, not an 8 year old document. That said, I recommend keeping the old plug-in documentation for reference, as it has many merits over the current document, but of course not the recently added and updated APIs.

  • What is Adobe AIR HTML based development

    Hi All,
I am a newbie in flex development. What is the difference between MXML based development and HTML based Development ?
    Appreciate your answers.
    Thanks,
    Amit

Adobe AIR is a cross-operating-system runtime that lets developers combine HTML, JavaScript, Adobe Flash® and Flex technologies, and ActionScript® to deploy rich Internet applications (RIAs) on a broad range of devices including desktop computers, netbooks, tablets, smartphones, and TVs. AIR allows developers to use familiar tools such as Adobe Dreamweaver®, Flash Builder®, Flash Catalyst®, Flash Professional, or any text editor to build their applications and easily deliver a single application installer that works across operating systems.
This program is required in order to run our media downloader that is used to archive files from Photoshop.com.

The MBA is so small and thin many people can't help thinking it is like a Windows netbook - an underpowered toy. It isn't. There's nothing I do on my top end iMac that I can't - and don't - do on my MBA. Of course the iMac has a faster processor, bus speed, and a discrete video card so it is much faster than my MBA. Then again, my computers spend more time waiting for me to do something than I wait for them - and this includes using Photoshop and compiling code.
If I were writing large programs - something like Word for example - I'd want a very fast processor to speed up the compile/debug/compile cycle. But for iOS development your codebase will be much smaller. Frankly I can't see that much difference between a 13" MBA and a 13" MBP for development purposes. Now a top of the line 15" MBP is a different matter with its much faster CPU and separate video card.

  • AIR browser is slow to load AJAX app & kills CPU

We have an AIR app, which mostly provides an AIR browser wrapper for our Web app.  The Web app consists of AJAX and embedded Flash.  The performance difference of the AIR browser versus a typical browser (Firefox, Chrome, etc.) is huge!  To compare Wep apps performance:
    Chrome
    CPU: 30%
    RAM: 250 MB
    Page load: 2 seconds
AIR Browser:  (Using latest version of AIR runtime)
    CPU: >90%
RAM: 120 MB   (Why so low?)
    Page load: 5-10 secons
How can this be tuned?  Is there a reason that the AIR browser doesn't use as much RAM?  Is there a reason that it's using more CPU?  Are the two related?
    Thanks!

    bradledford2 -
Just like you, an HTML/Javascript commercial Adobe AIR 3.0 app I'm currently developing for a client is SO SLOOWWW on both my Windows 7 (64 bit, 12G RAM) and Windows XP (32 bit, 4G RAM) machines, especially Mouseover, Mouseout and Click events on event-handled hyperlinks and buttons. Generally, the UI is so unresponsive it takes about a second or more for the above mouse events' handlers to fire.
I tried both event-handling (listener) and event delegation (which is supposed to be faster in managing a bigger number of elements) implementations for the target elements (about 400 links on a table grid), but it made very little difference on the performance on Windows 7 and XP.
I also tried packaging the app using the old 2.7.1 SDK, but it didn't make any difference.
    BUT..
Lo and behold, the same app performs very well on my Mac OS X 10.6.8, and the Mouseover, Mouseout and Click event handlers fire instantly (whether it is via the event-handler or event-delegation implementation). So, no performance problem on the Mac!
Chris Campbell is pinging the right people at Adobe. I'm desperate to get advice from them on a temporarily solution to the problem while they try to fix it.
