Airport Airdisk nearly useless with Leopard 10.5.1

Oh god, I just bought an Airport Extreme 802.11n thinking it would be the best networking experience of my life. I just bricked up my Linksys (flashing power light) by trying to upgrade to openWRT and needed to replace it.
So I picked up an airport extreme at BB along with a nice 360GB USB drive to serve as an airdisk.
I connect the airport, configure the network side with not much problems (except for the silly reboot every time you make a small config change... god, is this thing running Windows 98 or something ;-))
Next I connect my new Seagate HD enclosure. OK, airport complain about it and tell me that the disk need to be repaired... what? Don't tell me the disk is defective!
I connect the disk to my mac and it come up with not problems what so ever. OK, what is the problem then? I simple reformat as HFS+ to please the airport and connect again.
OK, now it see the thing. I configure file sharing on it and "restart" it for the 10th time (it must really be running on windows)
What? Now I have two new network names in my finder bar... Airport and some strange cpe(mac address) name. Apparently airport won't put a nice name on the CIFS side of the house... can I fix this please? How?
I could leave with all of the above. What really kill me is the SLOW, SLOW, SLOW network transfer rate of the airport. Trying to copy a 16MB application take like 2 minute! But if I zip it it will transfer in like 10 seconds! What the heck is this? Is the airport that slow when transferring large qty of small files? Large file transfer rate is blazingly fast but lot of small files just kill the thing.
The other very slow thing is erasing files from the airdisk. Almost a minute to erase the 16MB application.
I am really really really disappointed with the Apple product. It is the 1st time I feel I tried a bad product from Apple... But everyone need a 1st. I hope this is the last bad Apple product I ever encounter.
I really hope there is a fix for this. I even downgrade my Airport Extreme firmware to 7.1.1 from 7.2.1 so the Airdisk would stay connected properly. With 7.2.1 it would simply not connect to airdisk after a while.
Please give me some advise!

I upgraded back to 7.2.1 and had no more problems connecting to the airdrive... really don't understand this... might be related to the fact that I configured the airport to only use IPV6 Local.
But I had to go back to 7.1.1 because NAT-PMP is broken in 7.2.1. Transmission would just not properly map a port with 7.2.1. Under 7.1.1 all is fixed.
I am starting to wonder if I will not return the little airport back to BB and exchange for a Linksys. I mean, one of the reason to get the Airport was to use it as a airdisk... but I can't use it due to poor transfer (over wired) ethernet.

  • My A1084 airport express worked flawlessly with leopard, not with lion

I have a late 2006 iMac with an intel processor.
it was using leopard and I got an airport express a1084 (older model) and it was working flawlessly. I use it solely to play music from my iMac or iPod on my stereo wirelessly using a linksys e2500 wireless N dual band
    Compatible with 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g standards
I recently was strong armed by apple to upgrade to lion since we use the mac mail program and it was being ditched with the integration of iCloud.
so I ponied up and bought snow leopard, so I could install it and then down load lion from the app store.
    I HATE lion.
almost all of the programs I bought previously no longer work, including my 1 month old network wired printer.
If I don't plug the printer in to the mac, I can't scan to the iMac.
but anyway, my airport express is the issue I am looking for help with.
    This airport goes offline constantly
sometimes it flashes a yellow light, sometimes it has a solid yellow light.
sometimes it works for a week, sometimes for 1 hour.
I have re-set it up many times always with teh same result...until I plug it into a network cable, the iMac can't find it.
si I plug it in and get it working and then move it to the stereo and it will sometimes work for a little while, then no more.
have to set it up again.
is this yet another compatibility issue with LION or is the airport dying?
thank you for any light you can shed on this subject.

I have the exact same problem.

  • HP 1320 Printer with Airport Extreme Problem Solved with Leopard

This may be of interest. I appear to have solved my printing problems using an Airport Extreme with an HP 1320 printer.
It appears that all of the options for the printer must be specified. These options include the "Fit to Page" option in Print&Fax/Options&Supplies/Driver; the "Media Type" in Print/Finishing; the "Printer Resolution", "Resolution Enhancement", and "HPEconoMode" all in Print/Image Quality. If all of these are specified, the printer will print without user intervention.
    Hope this helps,
    David

There are no specific settings on the Apple router to allow a PC to connect. It broadcasts the same signal for all.
Have you checked the Windows firewall on the PCs to see if that, or possibly the anti-virus software is blocking the attempted connection?
I've had both XP and Vista machines, and in each case I had to go into the Firewall settings to tell the application to "allow" the connection that was being blocked. No problems at all after that. Not sure if this is your issue or not, but it would be the first place I would look.

  • Remote is nearly useless with the iPod

The Apple Remote does not work as advertised. I just bought a Video iPod, Universal Dock, and Apple Remote. Unfortunely, the Remote does not funtion as I (and many others) expected.

Look at the page: www.apple.com /ipod /accessories.html

Here's the desciption of the Apple Remote:

"The Universal Dock supports the new Apple Remote, so you can plug iPod into the Dock, connect to a TV or stereo and control everything from afar."

But you cannot "control everything from afar". You would expect the Remote to control everything the clickwheel can. But it doesn't. You can't navigate the iPod menus! This is a severe limitation!

It's also misleading that the Remote is shown pointing at an iPod in a Dock, and the iPod is at the top level menu (Music, Photos, etc.) . However, at this menu, the Remote would in fact control absolutely nothing. You would have to go up to the iPod and operate the click wheel manually. Not very useful.

"We are customers and other people, not apple employees."
Yes, I realize that. I'm a longtime Apple customer (and stockholder), and am familiar with the Discussion boards.
    "Direct comments here... http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html"
I posted here in the to help inform other customers, who might be considering getting the Remote, like I did. I've gotten a lot of great advice from the discussion forums in the past, and thought I'd help spare some others from buying something that does not do what it is described to do.
Having disappointed customers is not good for Apple... They should make it clear what the product can and cannot do. Better yet, design a remote that is fully functional.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
This is a common plaint discussed here and in the Install and Setup forum many times in many threads.
Some have gotten it to run, others updated to 2008, while others switched to NeoOffice or OpenOffice which work nearly flawlessly with Leopard and are free.
If you search these forums for "Microsoft Word 2004" you will find a plethora of information, some of which may be helpful.
Typically I think you have to do a complete uninstall and reinstall and be sure you have the very latest patches from MS.

  • Can't automatically connect to my home airport with Leopard

After I installed Leopard on my MacBook Pro, I can no longer automatically join my home (Airport) network. I have an antique (flying saucer shaped) airport hub that has worked perfectly for our home network up until now. In order to connect, I have to open Safari, wait for the Network Diagnostic button to appear, then go through the Network Diagnostic sequence. Sometimes it will ask for the password and sometimes not. I called Apple Support and they said that the new Airport utility (with Leopard) will not work on the older Airport hubs. They then transferred me to the Airport specialists, but after 15 minutes of waiting I gave up. I don't really want to spend the money to upgrade to an Airport Extreme, when the current hub works. But, on the other hand, it is a bit of a pain to go through this every time I turn on or wake up my MBP. Does anyone have any ideas how to address this problem?
    Thanks.

Hello, andyBall_uk. I figured out the problem, and I'm going to reply to it on here in case anybody else has the same issue they can see this solution. I already had an iOS device before, which saved a "keychain" of the old login info for the router. This was back when the router did have WEP security. Since then, it has been reconfigured for WPA2 however my old keychain was trying to join it as WEP.
To solve this, I went to System Preferences>Network>Advanced
    From here, I noticed the
    [ + ] [ - ] Drag Networks into the order you prefer
Highlighting my router and hitting the [ - ] sign removed the keychain that would previously only connect as WEP. This now allowed my computer to automatically connect to the router every time I opened it or turned it on.

  • Web Sharing with Leopard 10.5.2 and Airport Extreme Base Station HELP!!!

Ok...I want to set up web sharing on my computer but so far my attempts have failed.
I have an intel iMac with Leopard 10.5.2 installed and I have the latest Airport extreme base station (With draft n).
I turn on web sharing, and of course it works locally but not when trying to be accessed over the internet.
Now I realize that by default my routers address wont let anyone connect to my computer over the internet.
My router has an ip of 10.0.1.1, and I assigned my computer a static ip address of 10.0.1.200.
Now in the network preferences pane and the airport category, i set my computers IP (the 10.0.1.200), I put the gateway as 255.255.255.0, the router as 10.0.1.1 and the DNS as 10.0.1.1
Now going over to the airport utility I added a new entry in the port mapping section, with port 80 (both public and private) and the IP of my machine, 10.0.1.200.
Now in theory this should work but NOOOOO.
Does anyone have the same setup? a wireless network with the new airport extreme base station and has successfully configured Web Sharing?
    Thanks in advance.
    Felipe

    Well here is an update.
I saw an entry in apple support that said I had to change some setting in the apache folder /etc/apache2 in order to avoid getting the 403 forbidden error. I tried this and it did not work, i checked my user configuration file as well and the path to my home site directory was correct
Anyone here have a similar setup and has it working? It shouldnt be too hard to set up web sharing through a router. It has to be possible or else a lot of people would not buy a router because of this.
thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to help
    Bye.

  • Ayone used Intego Personal Backup with Leopard and an Airport Disk

I have been very successfully using Intego's Personal Backup program with OSX 10.4.10 on an intel iMac and a MacbookPro with an Iomega 750GB hard drive linked to an Airport Extreme. I've set the computers to automatically switch on nightly (via energy saver) 5 minutes before the Intego backup script is set to run. The script runs in the background and automatically logs on to the Airport Disk and selects the backup folder. After finishing the backup the script then quits the program and shutsdown the computer. It's very convenient and neat as it only backsup files that have changed and they are full usable copies rather than incremental backups.
Has anyone tried this using Leopard? Could this be a potential solution to the lack of Time Machine being used with Airport Disks?

    I've tried it, without success.
I have a clean install of Leopard. I bought a new Airport Extreme and Iomega UltraMax 1TB drive to go with Leopard, so this part of the setup is all new to me. I have been using Personal Backup, without problem, for ages.
What I find is that when I select the Airport Disk as the destination drive, the Spinning Beachball of Death starts and I have to Force Quit Personal Backup. A real shame as I really wanted to use the Airport Disk as a common disk between my iMac and iBook, and Personal Backup seemed the obvious way to get the iMac files on to the Airport Disk (the iBook only needs read-only access).
If anyone gets this going, I'd love to find out how.

  • Airport Admin with Leopard

How can I administrate my old Airport base stations with Leopard? it does not come with the Airport Admin utility and the app that is there in Utilities does not work with the old Snow Base Stations?.... Any ideas?

Have you tried AirPort Admin Utility version 4.2? Tiger didn't necessarily come with it either, but it still works with Tiger.
If you don't have AirPort Admin Utility version 4.2, you can get it this way*:
    . Go to http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42formacosx1033.html;
    . Download a disk image named "AirPortSW42.dmg";
    . If the installer launches, quit the installer;
    . Double-click the disk image to mount a volume named "AirPort 4.2 Update";
    . Within the AirPort 4.2 Update window, ctrl-click on "AirPortSW.pkg";
    . Select "Show Package Contents";
    . Open the "Contents" folder;
    . Double-click the "Archive.pax.gz" file, which causes an "Archive.pax" file and an "Archive" folder to be extracted;
. Open the "Archive" folder, the "Applications" folder within it, and the "Utilities" folder within that.
The AirPort Admin Utility is there. Discard everything else that was downloaded, as it probably will not work with your system. (AirPort Setup Assistant version 4.2 does not even work with Tiger.)
*At least, this is how to get the utility using the Finder in Tiger. I imagine that the process would be the same in Leopard.

  • Airport not recognised with Leopard

I've just installed leopard and I now can't seem to join my airport express to my main wireless network (my non-mac wireless router). I can restart the airport as a base station and stream itunes to it, but then I can't connect to the web and listen to music.
When I reset the airport express the airport utility recognises it. I then go through the process of joining a network and naming the airport express for use with itunes, and all seems to go well. However, the airport express then doesn't restart properly and is no longer recognised by the airport utility. iTunes at first recognises the airport express as a remote speaker but then can't connect to it.
    I didn't have these problems with OS X 10.4.10
    Any thoughts?

I seem to have solved this problem by downgrading the Airport Express software to 7.4.1. As soon as this was completed, my wife's MacBook was once again able to find the Airport Express and connect to it.
Perhaps this will be helpful to someone else.

  • Airdisk issues with Leopard.

With Tiger I had my AEBS connected to a USB disk and it worked just fine, no connection problems.
Now, with Leopard, Im running the exact same setup and I keep getting disconnected from the USB Disk.
When moving files between my MBP and the USB Disk I get a Server Connection Failure, and then it makes me Eject my USB Disk.
Any clues on how to remedy the situation?
I do a lot of sharing between my USB Disk and MBP, so any help is welcome!
    Thanks in advance!

I am so glad I checked out what the problems were before I upgraded. I bought an AEBS because I thought this was going to be a great way to work in Leopard, It's the backbone of my home network backup system. I have been using the AirDisc with Apple Backup 3.1.1, and although it did take a whole weekend to make the first backup (road trip!), it has been working very well since, (only a problem with iDVD project files). I use it to backup 3 macs, and I was looking forward to Time Machine. I guess Apple will wait for my family pack purchase until this is cleared up. New features sound neat, but I can't throw out what works for what will not.

  • Anyone got one to work with Leopard yet?

Posted this Rant at the end of another Topic, slightly OT so reposting here (with some additions):
I wish I could report that iTunes 7.6 broke my apple tv, because that would mean it had been working up until very recently. Sadly however, it hasn't been used since i put leopard on my media server (mac mini).
I bough one of the first batch of 40Gb ones before there were 160Gb ones, and have had to remove and re-add it to iTunes (streaming) every time i used it until leopard. now it will sometimes put in a fleeting appearance when removing a disk or plugging in an iPod.
Once it was even there long enough to tell it to sync one film. Since leopard my work around has been to remove and add it again but with syncing not streaming then sync the one film or tv show that is required. unfortunately this has only worked once.
What have I Tried To fix this i hear you cry well...
    Under Tiger:
complete os rebuild, disabling firewall, rebuilding mac subnet from ground up playing sequentially with advanced router properties (yes i do know what i am doing, I'm a paid IT Technician) calling in a friend with networking and IT communications degree to help, calling in father with 20 years corporate network design experience.
End result? nothing changed in the way my network was setup, as nothing was wrong with the way i had it set up to begin with (that said the initial setup of the router justifies a whole f*ing essay). during this time all mac's at all times had current software. i took all software updates hoping for a fix. in the mean time using the workaround described above.
    Under Leopard:
Are you Joking? even less functionality. after reading up and discovering you CAN'T DISABLE the leopard firewall yet, devised new work around (as above) worked once, gave up. too much to deal with with wifi connections under leopard dropping out continuously.
Result: useless piece of kit with truly wonderful and sleek looking software interface.
I think a large part of the problem is my laughable router which seems to flake out requiring a cold restart multiple times a day. (airport extreme 'n' 1st generation).
Both are just under a year old. I'll wait for 10.5.2 + Apple TV update + update to airport extreme base station (hopefully when time caplsule comes out).
If this doesn't resolve all my issues I'll just return ATV + AEBS, call it a day with apple networking and get a netgear n router, and one of those network HDD's with video playing capability and a tv output and hook both things up by my tv. no video conversion to itunes required. wireless n access to my media. half the cost, job done.
Don't get me wrong, mac's are still amazing but these two devices have shattered my faith in apple products, unless it's a mac or an iPod, I'll steer clear in future.
I would go back to Tiger but it is too much hassle now. They'll fix the WIFI and the firewall in 10.5.2 at which point there'll be nothing to stop me using my machines with leopard. updates for pro software continue to be released and nearly all of my applications worked with a clean install anyway.
Back to the topic, has anyone else got an ATV with leopard that does nothing at all? i want to be able to say to them that the product they sold me is not fit for purpose and return it under that premise.
Also if anyone has a fix (non voodoo please) I'd gladly eat my hat and just start using the bloody thing, albeit 10 months after purchase.

You say you tried switching off the firewall i tried that too and your quite right it seems that it will not work with the firewall off. as turning it off does not turn it off.
sos10: "I did make sure however iTunes wasn't on the list in the Firewall settings."
The list your talking about (if you're talking about the leopard firewall) is the list of programs WITH access. so if you have it set to: "set access for specific services and applications"; iTunes would have to be in that list with "allow all incoming connections".
The only other setting is essential services only which doesn't work. As this doesn't include the port we need to get a connection.
out of the three the one that works the most is the: "set access for specific services and applications"
iTunes - "allow all incoming connections"
This i when i get the odd reminder vis the devices list that i have a useless £200 electrical device heating up my front room.
Maybe this wouldn't be such a problem if you could actually open a port in a firewall (shock horror). I know they'd have to hide the option away somewhere so as not to mess up the simplicity of the interface!

  • Airport Extreme Sharing printer to Leopard and Windows 7 via Ethernet port.

    Hello!
My home office is in a mixed environment, 1 iMac with Leopard 10.5.8, and the other iMac running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on bootcamp. Both computers are connected to the Airport Extreme (dual band version, firmware 7.4.2) via Ethernet. I attached the HP LaserJet P1006 to the Airport's usb port in order to share the printer to both platforms.
My problem is that, I got the printer installed on Win 7 by using bonjour print service v2.02 without any problem as it said works in both Ethernet and wireless, I sent a print test from win 7 successfully, then I did another test from leopard ( as I presumed it should works also), however, it says "the printer is in use". and wouldn't print. I tried restart the Airport Extreme and tried print from leopard again and that was fine but then Win 7 couldn't print.
Is there any solution for Mac + Win environment like my description? If I have 2 computers running on OS X they print perfectly well. Thanks all!
My solution for now is to physically plugging the printer to where I need to print from. I use Ethernet wired both computers is because I want to take the advantage of the gigabyte lan port for speedy files transfer between both computers.

If networking isn't working out for you, you may want to try out a swtich. Best Buy sells one by IOGEAR that allows for two USB connections to tie into one computer. So long as windows 7 can either download its own driver for the printer for basic features, or if you want to download canon's driver this solution will work. The only draw back is having to bring the laptop near the printer when you need to print.

  • 4/30/2011.  Can you please help me.  I have an iBook G4 with Leopard OS 10.5. Yet how do I correct Website movies going flow-pause-flow-pause-flow etc?  Chuck Y Chicago

4/30/2011.  Can you please help me.  I have an iBook G4 with Leopard OS 10.5 and latest Safari updates and maximum Ram (512 or 640 kb).  Yet how do I correct Website movies going flow-pause-flow-pause-flow etc?  The problem is with the iBook, not the website and movies.  Thank you.  Chuck Y Chicago

5/2/2011.  Thank you all for your replies.  My iBook is in the third group of the website you referred me to.  I bought it July 5, 2004 at CDW near here.  It had OS 10.3.6.  1GB (GHz.  Power PC G4.), opaque white case. Its screen is 14.1 inches.  Soon after I bought it I had its 128 RAM raised to 640 RAM, to work with maximum capability for converting VCR recorded videos/movie into digital files and burning these onto DVDs.  Later I had an Airport card installed.  As time passed I opened the apple icon (upper left hand corner of the screen), and Softwate Update, and eventually had this install OS 10.5.8.  At first It could only be updated to OS 10.4.  But then after several years I bought Leopard OS 10.5.8 from the Apple store near here.  By then Leopard had been adapted to work on iBook G4.  Its specifications are described with the same Apple icon and About this Mac.
It will play You Tube and similar websites OK.  But videos/movies from websites such as hulu.com, ABC, CBS and so on, it displays a pattern of flow-pause-flow-pause-flow-pause-flow and so on.
I thought first to see if this forum would have any suggestions.
I think probably that its CPU has reached its limit; later Mac laptops have greater CPUs.
Many thanks to you all.   C Yopst   Chicago
