Airport Express blinks orange but works?

Hey all,
Lately my Airport Express has had periods where it's working, but blinking orange. The only times I've had it blink before was when my cable modem had gone wonky or my settings were messed up. I've checked to make sure that my iMac's Airport wireless hasn't 'drifted' to an unlocked network - it really IS my network that's running.
What does the orange blinking mean if my network is still running? I have my iMac, a PS3, and a Wii all connected to it, but neither the PS3 nor Wii are usually on.
Thanks

When you opened AirPort Utility and clicked on Manual Setup, did you click on the amber dot to see what the message said?
If you previously told AirPort Utility that you did not want to be notified when new updates were available, you can reverse this by opening AirPort Utility, clicking on Manual Setup, clicking the Base Station tab (just below the row of icons), clicking Options and changing your preference.
Also check Preferences under the AirPort Utility menu to make any changes as needed. Look at the top of the screen next to the Apple icon for the AirPort Utility menu.

  • Airport Express Blinking Orange!???

Alright. Im back, but this time with a minor problem. See, I purchased an iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB model on July and it is working real good so far. The only problem is the signal strength of my wifi keeps changing(possibly of the antenna) so I decided to make the signal stronger by creating another wireless network. So, I bought a used Airport Express Base Station, and as soon as I plugged it in, it keeps blinking orange. At first I thought it was charging but after 2 days it started to seem ridiculous. So, I went to the internet for help.
I looked at some forums and they say that I should perform a Reset, but I wasn't absolutely sure if that is the way to go. I then came to apple support for a better answer. Hope you guys know what to do.
    -Thanks in advance!^^

If you take your Express to the Apple store to have it checked out, the first thing they will do is connect an ethernet cable from a computer to your Express and open AirPort Utility.
    Did you try this?
Might be a good idea to pull the power on the Express first, then plug in the ethernet cable and power back up.
If the device does not appear at first, wait a few minutes and it will often just "appear".
If still no luck, you may have a defective device. Call Apple to go over your options.

  • Airport express blinks orange

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station, which works fine, in one end of the house but can't get this old one to do anything but blink. I have Cablevision as my ISP.
    Thanks
    Chris

A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of the several potential conditions may require your attention:
The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.
You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.
One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected Ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.
    (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305101)
If you run the AirPort Utility, it will show an amber circle on the summary page next to the area(s) causing the problem. Click on this amber circle and it should provide an explanation.
    Please post back your results.

  • My Airport Express is green, but my computer does not find it on a scan.  I have used it before, but it just stopped working.

My Airport Express is green, but on a scan, my computer does not find it.  I normally use it to play music from my Itunes to my house stereo speakers, and the icon shows up in itunes.  it stopped working and now my computer does not recognize it.  Help!!!  I hate listening to music on small speakers.

    Hello there Karen,
It sounds like you are having to power cycle your modem to get internet back every single day. We can start by troubleshooting your Airport Express to help isolate the issue. I would first perform a Soft Reset, then test the issue again. If needed as a last resort I would then perform a Hard Reset:
    Soft reset
Connect the device to power and wait for it to complete its start up process. To learn more about the start up process, please see All about Wi-Fi base station Status Lights (LED).
Press and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip for 1 full second, then release it. The light (LED) will begin flashing amber, indicating that the device is in soft reset mode.
From the AirPort menu bar item, choose the network created by the device (the network name does not change).
Open AirPort Utility from Applications > Utilities.
Select the base station, then click Edit (The Edit window will indicate that the base station is in Soft Reset mode).
Move through the tabs to make changes to your passwords or other settings as needed, and click Update and Continue as required
    Quit AirPort Utility.
    Hard reset
Press and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip until you see the status light (LED) start to flash amber rapidly, which should occur after about five seconds.
Release the button and the device will reset.
Wait about a minute for the base station to finish restarting, then open AirPort Utility from Applications > Utilities.
Select the base station from Other Wi-Fi Devices, then click Edit.
    Select the Other Options button.
Select "Restore previous settings" and click Next until you get to the final window.
AirPort Utility will indicate that Setup is complete. Click Done.
    Quit AirPort Utility.

  • Lots of existing threads, but no consistent answer - what settings need to be applied to the 2012 (new) Airport Express for it to work at hotels with an ethernet only connection?  Any answers specific to Japan would be helpful.

Lots of existing threads, but no consistent answer - what settings need to be applied to the 2012 (new) Airport Express for it to work at hotels with an ethernet only connection?  Any answers specific to Japan would be helpful.  I would prefer not to take my old Dell laptop and just be able to use my Ipad 2 via the wireless connection that the Airport Express creates.  However, I can configure the Airport Express at home prior to leaving if that is the best thing to do.

I have a very similar problem with my AE! My MacBook, MacBook Pro & iPod Touch (1st Generation) all get a GREAT signal from our AE. BUT, our iPod Touch (2nd Generation) and new iPad (WiFi) get terrible signal strength unless we're right next to the AE!! Tech support at Apple is of no help! I'm ready to sell them all! This all started when we got the last OS update for iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad. So it must be a software issue not a hardware one..
    Any ideas?

  • HT1515 How do i get my old AirPort Express (7years old) to work with my new Time Capsule?

How do i get my old AirPort Express (7years old) to work with my new Time Capsule?

Does anyone at Apple have help for this sort of question - I too have an old printer (HP LaserJet 5MP) that I would like to keep using on my Mac. (Mac OSX 10.6.8).
I got it working by getting a USB cord that connects to it - but every once in a while it just stops working for weeks. The mac 'sees' it and it sends the data because the printer lights start blinking but then it just doesn't do anything. Is there no one who can tell me (and raterada) how to get some new life into these old printers. I would rather not add this (and a new toner cart) to the landfill just yet. . .

  • Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, BT have checked and improved line still not working?

Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, other users are on ipads and BT have checked and improved line but I still have an intermittent/no connection?

You must tell us the whole setup.. what is the main router?? How are the express connected to each other?
On ipad it works ok?? But you are on a computer?? MBP early 2011 running Lion?? That doesn't work.. even if you are right next to the main router??
Plugged in by ethernet does it work??
Have you installed a wireless diagnostic program.. ?? Actually Lion has one installed but hidden I believe.
Later version bought it to the surface.
    About Wireless Diagnostics
If you do run Lion please install the 5.6 airport utility as it will give you loads more info on how the units are connected.. and link speeds for extend wireless.
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • Just can't get Airport Express to configure: it worked at my mum's, but not at home!

    Hello helpful people,
I am really hoping someone can think of what's going wrong with my set up. I keep getting an error message "an unexpected error occurred, please try again" when i try to do my configuration. I only want it to stream music from my ipad to my stereo. I would really prefer to do the set up only using an ipad, if at all possible.
I was given a shiny new Airport Express for Christmas. As i was staying at my mum's for two weeks, I plugged it into her stereo, and got it working. This was configured to join her existing wifi network, using only my iPad to set it up. The airport utility software was not used, as i didn't know it existed. All worked fine.
It looks as if my router is running WEP. So i gather i need airport utility to configure it. Airport utility says it can't detect a base station anywhere, even when inches away. There don't seem to be any options to get it to work differently.
I have reset and factory reset the device many times.
Some level of wireless access must be working on it, as it appears on my wireless list as a possible "set up airport express base station"
I go through the menus to set it up in the same way as at my mum's: selecting my existing wifi network to add it into, setting up a new base station password, and then watching and waiting.
Among the different resets and re-attempts i have done, it varies slightly in behaviour: the last time it failed it didn't get as far as asking for my wifi password.
After the error message i can't "try again" as suggested. It wipes out my wifi access, so i need to delete my existing wifi network (on the ipad) and re-add it to get an internet connection back again. I need to do a reset to get the "configure new base station" message back.
The differences between the two houses:
The stereo connection is different in the two houses: single 3.5mm jack into mum's; 3.5mm jack split into two needed for our stereo. I know it says you need to plug into the stereo first (and I have),  but surely the device doesn't care which cable i use?
At my house, the wireless router and airport box are within 4m of each other. At my mother's it's more like 20m.
My wireless router is from O2 (now Sky), my mother's is plusnet.

It looks as if my router is running WEP.
Virtually no security at all there, as there are numerous free utilities available on the Internet that will crack a WEP network in seconds.  You might as well run the network wide open, since WEP offers about the same level of protection.
You will not be able to configure the Express using an iPhone, iPad, or any version of AirPort Utility that is 6.x or higher with your router set to use WEP "security". They will not work with WEP, since it is so long out of date and non-secure.
An older version of AirPort Utility 5.x might allow you to configure the Express using WEP security, but with no protection anyway, this would be of little value.
See if your router can be configured to use WPA2 Personal security or WPA/WPA2 Personal security. If it can, then you will be able to use an iPhone, iPad, or any version of AirPort Utility to configure the Express in just a few minutes.
If your router cannot be configured to use stronger current WPA settings, now might be a very good time to ask your service provider for a new router.

  • Airport express, green light but not working.

while streaming music to airport express, it suddenly stops. Green light on AE, but connection with wireless net is gone. iPad airport express app tells that the AE was in a network and isn't anymore. Only way to get it back working is power off/on. Sounds familiar? Any tips what can be the issue?

Is the AirPort Express the only wireless router in your current network configuration or is it configured to "join" another wireless network for streaming. If there is another wireless router, where is the Express placed in relation to it ... same room, different room, different floor?
When streaming from your iPad, is it in the same room, different room, or different floor than the Express?

  • Airport Express + iTunes 10 not working with Airtunes, but 2nd Airport does

    Hey,
at first I have to excuse myself for my English, i come from Germany.
I looked around in the topics but i didn't find anything that helped me.
I own 2 Airport Express stations since nearly a year.
One of it creates a Wi-Fi network and is connected to a switch, which is connected to the internet.
The other Airport Express is set up as repeater and everything works fine, even Airtunes.
But then i noticed, that the Wi-Fi creating one was not able to work with Airtunes, which it was some weeks ago. I think this has something to do with iTunes 10. The other Airport works well with Airtunes with the same Macbook and speakers.
So I made a new set up on the Wi-Fi Airport, because some guys reported, that the problem would disappear then, but it didn't.
But I wondered why my iPhone 4 is now abled to play music via Airtunes with the new iOS 4.2.1 on the "broken" Airport, because my mac was not abled to do so and I thought of returning it to the Apple Store.
So how do i get this thing running again? I would like to use both of the Airports to listen to music in different rooms with my Macbook.
I would be glad for any help, thanks in advance
    TheShima

    @TheShima,
First open up the airport utility and see if both AE's show up. If not:
This would be my guess, unplug them both for 10 seconds, plug the network creating one back into the wall, them plug the second one back in after the first has a green light. If that doesn't work, "manual setup" and looking for the option that allows speaker sharing.
Finally if that doesn't work reset them, recreate the network reviewing the the advanced settings in "manual setup" and looking for the option that allows speaker sharing.
Does anyone know how to get movie audio to play through the airport express? I really want this to exist my wife's laptop speakers are awful and I would love to have the audio streamed to my airport express.

  • Airport Express 802.11n - not working at all!

I have had some trouble with my Airport express. Nothing works. I have tried to hard reset and factory default reset but nothing happens. It's only blinking yellow, and if i put a ethernet cable into it it turns green, but it still not showing in either airport (wireless) or at the airport utility. I have checked with both my MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro.
I also have a Airport extreme and i tried to expand the network wirelessly when i had the express up and running, but when it restarted it self it didn't show up nowhere.
Can someone help me out here?

After a factory default reset, the AirPort Express is broadcasting a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx.
If you are tying to configure the Express using wireless, you need to make sure that your Mac is logged on to this network first, before you open AirPort Utility.
It's also possible to connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the AirPort Express and then open AirPort Utility. Once the Express has been configured an updated, you can remove the Ethernet cable.

  • Airport Express Green Light but No Wireless Connection

I would be grateful for any help on an issue that has been driving me crazy! I have spent countless hours trying countless solutions. My wireless network is set up as such: Time Capsule serving as a Base Station, Airport Extreme, 1 Airport Express downstairs in dining room, 1 Airport Express upstairs landing, and 1 Airport Express in the bedroom. All are new, 802.11n. Time Capsule is configured as Create a Wireless Network/Allow This Network to be Extended. All other devices are configured as Extend a Wireless Network/Allow Wireless Clients. All device lights are green. The Time Capsule and Extreme produce a signal and have strong wireless connectivity. The expresses, though green, do not receive a signal and I cannot connect with laptop/iPhone etc. I have tried pretty much everything including changing the channels on the Time Capsule - basically ran through 10 of them with no difference. The Extreme relays strong wireless signal to the upper landing, but the Express - though showing green - simply does not put out a signal. Getting desperate here as have great wireless interest downstairs, but nothing upstairs no matter what I try. Any ideas MOST welcome. (ps...all firmware is up to date)

Kinda have a similar problem. Hijacking it.
Everything's up to date. About 1 year old.
Modem to AXp via Ethernet, AXp set to create a wireless network, shows greenlight.
Modem is a Motorola SB6120. Probably isn't relevant but let's mention it just to be sure.
Alu Macbook detects AXp. In Airport Utility, when I right-click Identify, it says orange/green flickering light. However, the state is greenlighted and it says that it's normal.
All of my devices detect and can connect to my network. It seems everything's working alright except that none can access Internet.
Internet works fine when I directly connect my modem to my Macbook and when I reset the former (which, according to what I read here and there, is fine).
Everything (Macbook, iPod Touch, Wii) was working fine until yesterday afternoon, and nothing since then. Tried resetting the AXp, cycle everything (unplug all, plug in modem, AXp and boot Macbook, in that order) and it didn't work.
Whether it's set to be distributing IP adresses to be sharing a public IP adress, it doesn't work.
I can click on renew lease, I can reboot my devices, same results.
So, where do I go from here? Just so you know, I know next to nothing about network stuff. Thanks in advance and here's the mandatory "sorry for my horrible english".

  • Airport Express Blinking Amber after Lightning

I have an Airport Express older plug in brick model I bought in 2012 that has a blinking amber light I cannot fix and need help. Lightning struck near my house the other day and took out 3 lights, power for a few hours, and fried my DSL modem. I assumed it hit a telephone pole as all my electronics are on surge protectors and the modem probably fried due to the telephone line in. So after getting a new DSL modem through Yahoo Japan, my Airport has a blinking amber light. It does not show up in the Airport utility on my MBP, and does not show up on my iPhone. I’m running Mountain Lion on my MBP and using 6.1 Airport Utility, my iPhone is running iOS7. When I run the utility, I see nothing, and nothing in the drop down for other networks, I’ve done soft, hard, and factory resets on the Airport. All of which glow steady amber, then switches to blinking, but I cannot see it to set it up. Internet from the new modem works fine, I’ve tested the line direct to my MBP. And the modem is almost the same as my previous just a newer model. But I should see it regardless if it has internet connected to it right? So is there a way to direct connect to the Airport via Ethernet or USB to set it up, or did the lightning probably fry something inside the Airport as well and I’m SOL and need to somehow get a new one in Japan? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

You have done a factory reset .. that is the only reset that had a chance to work and get it going. What is wrong is not clear.. as it is blinking which shows something is working.
So is there a way to direct connect to the Airport via Ethernet or USB to set it up, or did the lightning probably fry something inside the Airport as well
You can plug it into a Mac or PC by ethernet. Do another factory reset on it.. but you must use the older 5.6 utility.. the new utility seems to be quite useless in finding a TC that is not configured by ethernet.. whereas the old utility had no issues at all. You can load 5.6 onto Mountain Lion or Lion.. but Mavericks is bad news.
    Otherwise..
It is toast.. buy a new one.

  • Airport Express Solid Orange

I've done a hard reset on my Airport Express, 802.11n (1st generation). When plugging in the powersupply, the device flashes green for one second, then turns to a solid orange color. After approx 60-90 seconds, the devices seems to 'reboot', flashing green for one second again and turning to a solid orange just to keep continuing in this cycle. Airport-configuration utility won't recognize the device in the progress. What can I do to get it fired up?

Unfortunately, this is likely an indication that a component in the power supply section of the Express has failed....and the device will need to be replaced.
It is a real longshot, but if you have the time and inclination to very carefully saw open the case along the center seam, there is a very small chance that you might find something obvious, like a connector that has worked loose due to heat expansion cycles.

  • My Airport Express does everything BUT connect to the internet

So my AE just up and died, and the usual troubleshooting steps haven't worked. I can connect to the internet via Ethernet, and my girlfriend can't connect either, so it has to be the router. I can still join the network and print, so the wireless works fine. I've done the hard reset, and the left it unplugged for 5 mins before replugging, but neither work. I've tried the Airport Setup Assistant, and the Network Status in System preferences would actually tell me I'm connected to the internet, even though AE is flashing orange.
What could be wrong here, and is there anything else I can do at this point?
    Here's my setup:
    *Airport Express
    *Powerbook G4
    *OS X 10.4.11
    Thanks.
