AIRPORT LOSING SIGNAL RANGE- HELP!!!

I have a 2006-2007 standard macbook.
Running mac osx 10.4.11 with
1.83 ghz
2gb ram (upgraded)
120 gb harddrive (upgraded)
Over the past month or so my airport has not been working properly. It has been having trouble finding my home network (at both homes) unless I get increasingly closer to the router. At first I could get internet downstairs, then I had to come upstairs to my room, now I have to be sitting next to the router in order for Airport to connect to my network and even then the signal isn't at full bars. Can anyone help me? I've tried deleting my preferred network and adding it again but that hasn't helped. I'm hoping if I upgrade to leopard that the new airport might work better but after 3 years I don't know why mine would all of the sudden stop working. HELP!!

I am having the same problem. I went to the Apple store by my house and they said it might have something to do with the Operating System. They Recommended a Archive and Install and since I still have my Leopard disk I think i am going to try it out some time on Monday. To be dead honest with you, I am pretty sure this is not going to fix it, and I think I am going to have to buy a new Airport card, which totally *****.....

  • Airport Losing signal/disconnecting

    Hi,
I'm currently still having problems with my airport disconnecting and losing signal. This is really driving me nuts, is there any solution to this? As it was working fine till i updated it.
If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem when updating to 10.5.6, i fixed it with a clean install. Before you do that you can try to isolate the problem further with these steps:
    - What was that last thing you did before this problem started?
    - Do you have the same problem no matter what network/type of router you try connecting to?
Just to make sure its not hardware, boot to your Leopard install disk and try connecting to the network from the airport pane. If you have the same problem when booted to the install disk its pointing towards a hardware issue. I would head for the nearest Apple store and make them fix it.
If you don´t have the same problem when booted to the install disk this might be cause by a software problem.
    - Make sure everything is up to date. OS X, firmware for routers etc etc
    - In System Preferences>Network, make sure the service order is set so that Airport is on top
    - Is there any devices that can cause interference? cordless phones, microwaves and so on.
    - Try changing channels on your router.
    - Reset your router and set it up again. If your using a Airport base station go to Manual Set up and choose File from the menu bar, click Save a Copy as. This will allow you to export the base station settings, if you need to get this settings back you can simply import them.
    - Rename /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and restart your machine. This will remove any network settings you have made on your machine
    - Create new network settings
If your not able to solve or isolate your problem with these steps i would suggest you post the Console logs here as there are a lot of the ppl on the forum that prbly can help you more after reading those.
    Best o´luck

  • Airport losing signal FIX!!

If, like a lot of others on this forum, are having problems with losing their airport signal, it is most likely not your airport, but the latest Airport upgrade, 4.2. Please see this previous discussion:
    http://discusssearch.info.apple.com/webx?14@@.68b4598e/1
I followed this link and downgraded to 4.1 from 4.2 per Christian Bonato and everything seems to be holding, at least so far. I hope someone at Apple is aware of this and working on a fix. It knocked out 3 of my Macs!

Since I was the original poster and did put up another post that this fix seemed only to work about a day here is my update:
I have a mixed setup: Clamshell iBook with airport card, Tibook with airport card, and iMac G5 with extreme card.
All worked fine together through a snow airport, until mid-August about the time of the 10.4.2 update and the Airport 4.2 update.
Slowly they quit seeing the network or I had to be almost on top of the base station to get it to work. The iMac is sitting almost next to the base station so it had no problem. If I restarted the base station it would work for a few minutes to an hour.
Thinking my snow unit had had it I bought a Netgear G type unit. Hooked it up and wham everything worked great, at least for about 4 days, then the same deal. laptops would see the base station but when I tried to log on it said there was an error and would not allow the log on. the iMac would spaz out sometimes and just not see the base station.
I tried a lot of ideas from the discussion groups and on my own. I tried the 4.1 down grade and it worked for about a day. Since the iMac G5 displayed somewhat different messages than the laptops I just turned its Airport card off and bingo the laptops were happy again and no problems. Turn on the iMac card and within 2 hours the troubles reappear.
I now have my iMac hard wired to the router with its airport card turned off, and all is well for over 3 weeks now. I still do not understand the problem but it can be traced to the update, either the Airport 4.2 or the 10.4.2 update. I also tried reinstalling the 10.4.2 combo update on the iMac and that didn't fix anything.
From what I can tell from my setup is: a mix of B and G cards seems to create the problem and one of the two updates from mid-August set it off. It also does not seem to be a base station make or model problem, it is an equal opportunity issue.

  • Problem with Time Capsule Signal Range

I just bought a Time Capsule to replace my Airport Extreme. All went well except I started having Signal problems. The Time Capsule signal range doesnt seem to cover my entire apartment. Its strange cause the Airort Extreme does. I have placed the TC in the same location and connected my Airport Express in the same manner as before when I was using my Extreme.
I always thought the signal strength is the same with both the devices on an HDD is added to the TC
Please if someone can help me with this.
    Thanks

    Hey guys
I tried all our suggestions but seems the signal is still week. I again went ahead and relaced the TC with my Airport Extreme to double check and it works perfect the signal is stronger and reaches to the fathest corner of the house.
I also heard that the Signal in the TC is weeker than the Extreme but this doesn;t make sense since Apple itself said they have to be same
Could it be that the unit I bought could be faulty? I am thinking of replacing it and getting a new fresh unit and trying it
    Suggestions??

  • AirPort losing WIFI connection multiple times a day.

My AirPort keeps losing connection mulitple times a day. The only way to get it back is it turn AirPort off and back on. My HP is not losing connection, so I know its not my router signal. Help!

Sorry, I do not remember much about AirPort Utility in Tiger (10.4.11).
It might be called AirPort Admin Utility on Tiger. Look around in the Utilities folder or Applications folder to see if you can find it or something similarly named.
Should be more info and help about the update.....which is called 6.3.....in this Apple support document:
AirPort Express Firmware Update 6.3 for Mac OS X - Support - Apple
Finally, I was not kidding when I said that firmware updates on older devices will sometimes cause them to fail. Proceed at your own risk.

  • Repeated lost of AirPort Express signal on home network w/ Mac and Dell PC

After a year of steady, reliable home wireless network access with an AirPort Extreme base station and an Express relay in the upstairs, I am suddenly, repeatedly losing signal strength from the Express relay. The Express goes into a flashing amber status when the problem occurs. To solve the issue, I have successfully been able to restart the Express, which works for 12 to 36 hours before the situation happens again. What could have happened to cause this sudden recurring problem and what can be done to resolve it longer term?

Hello kkinva. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has been introduced recently in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal between the base stations.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like MacStumbler or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • Airport Express signal fine but no internet connection

We have been using an Airport Express for wireless Internet access and recently are unable to connect to the Internet. We use a Comcast cable modem, through a Linksys router, to the Airport Express. We can connect by network cable to the router and access the Internet, but are unable to connect wirelessly. We are getting a signal from the Airport Express (the light is green), but no Internet connectivity. We have restarted and done a hard reset (holding the reset button while plugging the Airport Express in) of the Airport Express, but it did not seem to help. The hard reset did not result in resetting the settings, so perhaps there is another way to reset it or perhaps there is another problem.
    Has anyone had similar problems?

I tried power cycling the cable modem, downloading new firmware (why didn't Software Update tell me about this?), deleting the DNS servers, hard reset of AirPort Express, factory reset of AirPort Express, fiddling with AirPort Admin Utility, fiddling with AirPort Setup, all of the above in different order and different combinations, and it still would not work.
Power cycling the cable modem was one of the first things I did, and that resulted in getting Internet connection through the cable modem onto the ethernet cable; just no Internet through AirPort. Finally, after a factory reset of the AirPort Express did not help, I decided to power cycle the cable modem again, even though I had already just confirmed again that I was getting the Internet through the ethernet cable. Once the cable modem finished the power cycle, it finally worked! I was back on the Internet via AirPort!
I'm not exactly sure which solution fixed it for me, but I suspect that it didn't work at first because I did not power cycle the cable modem afterwards. In other words, if after changing AirPort settings you still are not connected to the Internet, try power cycling the cable modem. Do this every time for each change you make to the AirPort settings.
The other thing I learned is that unplugging the cable modem from the wall power outlet or turning off the power strip will NOT power cycle the cable modem properly. Instead, you must remove the power cord from the cable modem. I tried all three of these methods and for whatever reason, the only time it worked was by removing the power cord.

  • I am trying to extend my airport extreme signal to another airport extreme can this be done? I have tried several time using the automated set up but it keeps failing... What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to extend my airport extreme signal to another airport extreme can this be done? I have tried several time using the automated set up but it keeps failing... I have selected every possible security/password encryption level... What am I doing wrong? If it os possible where can I find step by step instructions? Please & Thank you!

The challenge with the older round AirPort Extremes are that they are "g" wireless devices.
When you configure them for WDS, the speed on the wireless network is cut in half...and probably will not have the bandwidth required to stream video reliably from either AirPort Extreme since both are affected by the WDS setup.
There is not an "automated" setup for WDS. You have to do this manually on both AirPort Extremes. Unfortunately, it is not an easy configuration and it's easy to make a mistake and hard to recover without starting all over again.
Apple's instructions for WDS are here if you want to give it a try.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262
It is possible that it might work. Keep us posted on your progress
Adding a single AirPort Express will unfortunately not help. You have to have "n" wireless devices at all router points.

  • Signal range from router to Apple TV

What is the maximum signal range from the router to the apple tv? My Airport Extreme is about 50 ft from the location where I want to set up the Apple TV with an HDTV.

I don't think there's a simple figure you can rely on as building layout/construction and other factors will all affect any theoretical maximum distances.
If wifi doesn't cut it consider some mains powerline networking sockets eg those from Devolo, Netgear etc

  • Component - Losing Signal Frequently

*I'm not using HDMI because when they installed HD FiOS on my TV, they said that HDMI wasn't working so they put in the component cables.*
I have been losing signal quite often, sometimes several times in the duration of a half-hour show. It can't be the weather because 1.) FiOS shouldn't be affected by the weather and 2.) this happens rain or shine. When the set-top box comes back on, my TV says that the box is in stand-by mode and to press MENU to watch television. It's become extremely irritating.
    Thanks for any help.

same thing with me they said that HDMI cable wasn't working and said that they had to use component cables. Now Tonite i was watching TV an between 7pm and 9:30 the HD DVR cut out about 15 times....Must say I am royally upset!!!!
Does anyone know how to fix this issue???

  • EA6300 Wireless Signal Range

hi, after installed the EA6300 router, found that wireless signal range is not "excellent".
Just beside the router, the wireless signal of my Samsung S2 is full bar (4 bar), about 3 meter distance (no obstruction) dropped to 3 bar, about 10 meter distance (1 wall block in between) dropped to 1 to 2 bar. Same as my Vostro 3300 laptop.
I did updated to latest firmware, disabled the 5Ghz network, changed the 2.4Ghz to 20Mhz only channel width, changed to other channel too (my neighbour is using channel 1), the wireless signal range is still the same.
Did I miss any setup steps? Or is it factory fault? Before that I bought EA4500, faced the same problem, hence I exchanged to EA6300, but still the same problem.
Nornally the EA6300 router wireless signal range can reach how far?
    Thanks.

Since you've already tried two different routers and experienced the same problem, this could have something to do with your network setup. Where is the device located? It is recommended to place the router in an elevated area so it can go around physical obstructions. You can get the most out of your new router by using the 5GHz network. I suggest you get a wireless AC adapter for your laptop to make use of this. As for the 2.4GHz network, use this tool: inSSIDer. Channels other than 1 may also be crowded. This should help you decide on what channel is best to use for your network.

  • How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal?

How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal? What equipment & devices do I need to travel with to make this possible?

You may mean the AirPort Express.....not AirPort Extreme.....as the Express is a popular travel router.
The whole idea behind using this device is that the hotel must provide an Ethernet jack in the hotel room. Then you connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet jack with an Ethernet cable and configure it to provide your own wireless network in the room. You still have to agree to terms, pay the fees, etc.
The problem with this approach is that it is getting very difficult to find hotels in North America that prrovide an Ethernet jack....most have moved to wireless networks and the others are not far behind.
So, if the hotel is already providing a wireless signal, the AirPort Express is of no use in that situation.
If you normally stay at the same hotels, and know that they provide Ethernet ports, an AirPort Express might make sense in terms of convenience.

  • 'No Airport Networks in Range' on OS 10.1 PowerBook G4 550MHz

Hi there, I have searched these forums and checked the FAQs without any luck finding this problem. I am working on a PowerBook G4 550MHz that used to have OS 10.4.8 and when you would click on the wireless icon it would report 'No Airport Networks in Range' and it was greyed out. You could select 'Other' and try and manually enter the wireless settings with no luck. It doesn't matter how close you are to the base station, either, it will not pick up that there is a wireless network available. I have checked that the hardware is seated properly and it is. We even have a different Powerbook G4 800MHz that has the same airport card that works fine. I swapped the airport cards and still have the same problem. We have taken it to other wireless networks with the same problem. It will get on hard-wired networks fine.
Now, we threw in a new hard drive and loaded the original MAC OS 10.1 and got it updated to 10.1.5 but we still have the same problem, no wifi, it recognizes the hardware, it just won't see a wifi network and it will not connect manually, either, it's like the range is just terrible or something. Anyone have a clue what could be going on here? I didn't see any firmware updates though I could have missed something with that. Either way, it is very frustrating. Thanks.
BTW, The router works fine as you can get other PCs and Macs hooked directly to it without issue.

Most likely, the issue is the AirPort card or it's configuration on the G4.
To setup AirPort for High-Speed Cable Internet connectivity:
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create an AirPort configuration, the AirPort card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
    - Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
    - Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    - By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Proxies tab
    - Configure Proxies: Manually
    - Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    - Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
    - Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
    - Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)
