Aliases failing after migrating to new disk

I migrated from my original 500GB disk to a new 1TB disk by using Disk Utility's "Restore" function.  For those of you that are not familiar with Restore, it should be the highest fidelity form of coping a partition given that it does a "block copy" - e.g. it copies the data byte-by-byte instead of doing a file based copy.  Also it verifies after the copy is done.  In my opinion, it is the gold standard for copying an entire partition.
The new disk booted up fine, but I was surprised to find out that about half of my 190 aliases were broken.  When I looked inside the alias files themselves I saw that they contain a lot of data, including a path to the target file.  In all cases where the aliases stopped working on the new drive, this path was not correct.  In other words, I had moved the target file on the old drive before cloning the whole partition onto a new drive.
I reinstalled the old drive and verified that all my aliases were in fact functioning so this was not an issue in on the source disk.  The aliases were able to work properly even with outdated path data in them.
After doing some reading on how OS X aliases work, I found out they use multiple ways to find the target file.  If the path inside the alias is not good, OS X has other means to find the original target file.  But somehow this broke after copying to the new disk.
So the question is if there is a way to force aliases to get refreshed so that all their data is correct?  In other words, before I do a migration to a new disk, can I run some command that causes all the aliases on my existing disk to be resolved to their targets and then have the contents of the aliases be made fully consistent with that resolved target data.  This would fix the broken paths in the aliases which would allow them to work after the migration to the new disk.

Try this:
Make a folder on your destop called F.
Inside folder F make two subfolders called A and B.
Inside A create a text file called T.
Now creas an alias to T which we will call T.alais.
Test out T.alias.  It should open T.
Now move T to folder B.
Again, test out T.alias.  It should open T even though it has been moved.
Now use CCC to copy F to another disk.
Delete the original F and empty the trash.
Now try to open T.alias.  It will fail.
The reason it fails is that you moved the target of an alias (from A to B) then copied the whole thing (both alias and target) to a new disk.
I just tried it and it failed for me.
This is what happens to me en-mass when I move from one disk to another.

    Same C3745 and PIX
    Same use4rs, same client.
Works great as long as the SecurID card is not in NEW PIN mode
If the card is in NEW PIN mode, the Cisco Systems VPN client of course prompts if the users wants to create a new pin. The answer is ?y? or ?n.? The client is then supposed to prompt for the PIN and then prompt a second time for the PIN. This never happens. Instead, w/in three seconds of the user saying ?y?, CSACS fails the user and the client terminates the connection.

    Hi
You may want to ping the Cisco TAC. I remember there were loads of issues with RSA authentication that may have been fixed after 4.0 shipped.
If you run csauth from the command line:
    csauth -z -p
you'll see a whole load of debug.. look for "[Securid" to see all related messages.

Unable to open indesign after migration to new mac all other programs open and work. Why? Running Yosemite 10.10.1 Indesign CS5

The keyword is "migration." Migrating or copying files for Adobe applications usually does not work. Not all of the necessary subsidiary files are copied to the right location.
You'll need to first clean up the mess with this tool:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Then download an installer from here:

This is a known bug which began to occur with the 10.4.8 update. I suggest you file a bug report with Apple. Its quite annoying and hopefully, the more people who contact Apple about it, the more importance they will give to fixing the problem.

If you are syncing using iCloud, try going to System Preferences/iCloud (computers) and checking Safari. If it is checked, try deselecting it, wait 10-15 seconds, and then check it again.

    Hi Art Bunny Rabbit,
Migration from one machine to other causes problem most of the time. So I recommend you to reinstall the software. Done worry none of your documents will be effected.

  • Should I wiat for Snow Leopard to migrate to new disk?

I have a Macbook Pro 13" and had a repair resulting in anew hardrive. Did an erase and install of original Leopard to at least have the machine up to date. My question is that I will be migrating all my info and setting from my Imac's Time Machine to the new disk on the Macbook Pro, which I did when I first bought it a few months ago. Would it be better to wait a day or two--when my Snow Leopard DVD Upadte Disk--will be arriving and then migrate everything over of is it the same as migrating now and then updating the computer when the new OS arrives either tomorrow or Saturday.

    Hi, again.
Nobody who's allowed to talk about it knows as of today exactly what's involved in the installation, but all indications are it's not a big deal.
Purely from past experience, however, I always recommend doing major things one step at a time. If you do one right after the other, you multiply the (small) chances of error, and may have no clue about which step caused any problems.
I'd say do the migration first. Start Time Machine (or other) backups immediately. Then use the Mac for a while to be sure everything's kosher.
There are bound to be bugs in Snow Leopard. Probably minor overall, but no major (and few minor) upgrade in the history of the computer has been entirely bug-free. So make sure your Pro is working fine on Leopard, and is properly backed-up, before installing SL.

    Hi All,
We try to migrate a 8i database to 10g by using the exp and imp. All tables and data are already migrated by imp. During the imp, there are errors said the trigger compile with errors.
When login to the em to check, I found these 2 errors.
    Line # = 2 Column # = 1 Error Text = PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored
    Line # = 2 Column # = 60 Error Text = PL/SQL: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
My trigger is a very simple one:
    BEGIN
    Select TB_COUNTER_SEQ.NEXTVAL INTO :NEW.INCREMENT_NUM FROM DUAL;
    END;
And I'm sure the "TB_COUNER_SEQ" is there.
Do I need to change anything on the trigger when migrating from 8i?
In fact, besides this trigger, all other trigger imp to this schema are having the same error. The schema in the 10g is a newly created one, is there any special right I need to create grant to this new user?Grant the necessary privileges on the tables (and any other objects used, like sequences) directly to the owner of the triggers. Privileges granted to a role don't count in AUTHID OWNER stored procedures; the privileges have to be granted to the owner of the stored procedure (or to PUBLIC).
It the error is occurring at position 60, then it looks like you don't have privileges on dual. Login as SYS and
GRANT SELECT ON dual TO PUBLIC;You may need synonyms (perhaps public synonyms) for the objects, too.

  • ActiveSync is not working properly after migrating to new Exchange 2013 SP1 server?!

Few weeks ago we have added new Exchange 2013 SP1 onto our existing Exchange 2007 environment. I have migrated my mailbox to the new Ex2013 server. Everything (send/receive - internally/externally, OWA, OutlookAnywhere) for me and the existing Ex2007
users works fine. The only thing I have trouble with is the ActiveSync! After migrating to the new Ex2013 server my phone stops getting new emails…, existing Ex2007 users don’t have any problems with their mobile phones.
I did ActiveSync test for my user account with ActiveSync Tester and here is what I have:
As you can see from the error above  ActiveSync Tester detects ActiveSync on Ex2013 server however something wrong there with form-based auth?! I can’t see any differences in settings for ActiveSync virtual folders in Ex2007 and Ex2013
    virtual folders?!
What I’m missing here?! Please help.

Check if the Exchange Servers group does not have the appropriate permission to the mailbox object in Active Directory.
To check whether inheritance is disabled on the user:
1.Open Active Directory Users and Computers.
2.On the menu at the top of the console, click View > Advanced Features.
3.Locate and right-click the mailbox account in the console, and then click Properties.
    4.Click the Security tab.
    5.Click Advanced.
6.Make sure that the check box for "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" is selected.

  • Time machine after migration to new mac - problem

After migrating all of the data from a MacBook Pro to a new iMac 27, I discovered a glitch in the Time Machine backup. I kept getting error messages that Time Machine could not back up 560 gigs but my new machine had only 160 gigs on the hard drive for backup. After discussions with the hard drive manufacturer, and an Apple representative, I read on the forum about backing up multiple hard drives. This gave me an idea, and sure enough, I have two additional hard drives daisy chained to the backup hard drive. Apparently Time Machine was also trying to back up the two additional hard drives (which I use for additional backups). After excluding those two extra hard drives in system prefs under Time Machine options, the problem went away. Now for the first time in a few years, Time Machine is backing up only my primary computer.

Sorry, I was posting this for anyone who had a similar problem. I solved my own question - dufus as I was - and posted this for the edification of others.

After migration to a new Mac Pro Dreamweaver CS6 won't launch. It says it is missing menus.xml file. How do I resolve this?

    Hi rustyg12,
    Go to Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS6/Configuration/Menus/menus.bak
You'll see a menus.xml there - it is a backup copy of the actual menus.xml file that DW uses.
Copy it from that folder, paste it 1 level above (in Menus folder).
Fire up DW. See if it works.

  • Aperture asks for original serial number after migration to new MAC

After migrating my software and files from my iMac to a new Mac Mini. Aperture asks for serial number first time I wanted to use it. Will not accept the serial number from either my first, Aperture 2 version of my Aperture 3 upgrade. I believe I never had version 1 - can't find amongst my software collection. Website support doesn't seem to allow me to display the software dtails I have registered with Apple over the years. How can I get this information?

Try Troubleshooting Professional Application Serial Numbers and if that doesn't help see Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers
Apple support has been pretty good in the past suplying new serial numbers with the bare minimun of documentation.
    good luck
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - reading your post it is not clear but if this version of 3 is an upgrade from 2 you will need both serial numbers. First enter the serial number from version 2 then the number from 3

  • Outlook prompts creds after migration, unless new windows profile created

    HI!
Outlook keeps prompting credentials after migration for some users. When we create new windows profile for this user, all going well. Autodiscover in browser also keeps prompting for password.
I checked credential manager (there are no passwords stored), also tried new outlook profile (no help).
    Any ideas?

2010 SP2 migrated to 2010 SP3. We already tried changing authentications. The problem occurs for random users (not all users). Auth settings on autodiscover virtual directory: Anonymous, Windows, Basic. Auth on exchange (get-autodiscovervirtualdirectory):
    Basic, NTLM, WindowsINtegrated.
Also i did not mention early - the problem obviously with autodiscover. I can't get autodiscover.xml using browser (keeps prompting for credentials). From another winows profile on the same computer with the same mailbox all going well. So I don't understand
    where should I look to.

  • Major permissions problems after migrating to new iMac

Hi, I am very new to this and need some help. Have been using a MacBook pro for the past year to synch iPods/iPads that are used within our school. Purchased an iMac and proceeded to migrate users/files etc. After migrating I have had major problems with iTunes.  My iTunes library is visible but I cannot synch any devices, have tried verifying permissions and fix permissions but to no avail. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Did you instal the program again, or try to migrate it from the old system (not a good idea)? I would run the installer again and it should correct the problem -- the Proximity dictionary for English (and probably others) is apparently not installed correctly.

  • Duplicates after migrating to new imac

I recently bought a new imac. Migrating from my old Power PC G5 to new imac went smoothly apart from itunes.
On my old imac i stored all my music on an external hard drive. I thought that after migrating all I would need to do would be to plug this external hard drive into my new imac and all would be fine. Sadly not - every track had the small exclamation mark on it. Believing this was because it could not find any of the music I went File>Open Library and selected everything in my external drives music folder. Now instead of replacing all those files with exclamation marks next to them I have duplicates of everything - and annoyingly the music files I want to keep, the ones with the ratings and play counts, are the ones with the exclamation marks (ie the ones that cannot be found).
Is there a solution to this or do I have to manually go through my entire library deleting the duplicate and then finding each individual track. I have 95GB of music so that may take a while!
    Any help would be wonderful.
