Alignment on multiple artboards

The document I am working on has two artboards (front and back of a document) and I am trying to center some text on the artboard. The issue that I am having is that when I try to align something to center on the first artboard (the left one) it moves it off that board and aligns center on the 2nd artboard (the right one).
I have about 10 other files with this same set up (two artboards, multiple text boxes) and have never had an issue with alignment. As long as "align to artboard" is selected Illustrator never moves the text box to the other artboard to align it.

It could be that you're just stumbling across an astonishing speciality of Illustrator. For example, in AI CS5, you may do the following steps.
1. Create a document with 2 artboards
2. On artboard 1, draw a filled rectangle
3. Leave artboard 2 blank
4. Select the rectangle on artboard 1, then Shift click on artboard 2
5. Deselect the rectangle on artboard 1 by clicking somewhere on the scratch area (outside the artboard boundaries)
6. Marquee select the rectangle not only by touching its boundaries but also by completely surrounding artboard 1
7. Do an Align to artboard
Would you now say that the result is exactly as expected? Would you think that marquee selecting (as described in point 6.) instead of just clicking on the rectangle should make a difference in that situation?

Multiple Artboards to PDF gives RAM error?

Hi,
I am currently wondering if I do something wrong or if there are some bug involved.
I am working on a walldesign, it will be printed as 3 pages. See attached file below.
I am using the artboards for aligning the background to match bleed and content correctly.
Below i used a .tif file as background that covers all area, Then i save PDF on each artboard,
I turn off Keep illustrator edit and Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4). All three pdfs seem to work, they open in Acrobat.
But doing it this way might corrupt the pdf?
If I import the pdf in photoshop it will give me RAM error. I have 64 gb ram in x64 enviroment so that should
not happen when the PDF is only 10 mb? On a similiar project the printers also had trouble placing the pdf
in their printing system also complaining on RAM? Or error on "Cant rasterize the image".
If i make 3 smaller backgrounds and remove all artboards and only have 1 for each part, then the above
error don't occur and everything is fine. So i guess its either multiple artboards or that the background is to large
in someway or is kept outside the trimarea in the pdf so it stays huge. I thought everything outside the cutting area
would be cropped away if I save without illustrator edit. The pdf size seem to tell me that it has cropped everything
outside. But the ram error will occur :|
Any ideas or tips?

It wont render in Chrome either, and trying to open in Photoshop gives me:
Could not complete the Open command because there is not enough memory(RAM)

How do you resize multiple artboards in Illustrator at the same time?

Hi,
This is a question that has been bugging me for a while. I'm currently on CS6 but I'm looking for a solution that can also work on CS5 for a co-worker.
Having multiple artboards has been established since CS4 and I have yet to see an official way of resizing multiple artboards, if anything there should at least be a plug-in.
As great of a feature it is, it seems a little short sited. If one has multiple artboards one should be able to manage multiple artboards, right?
I totally love having multiple artboards but I should be able to resize and manage multiple artboards as well.
This is great for building icon sets but how can I resize the set all at once?
I was considering trying to do an action but odds are I still would have to select an artboard one by one to do which doesn't save much time if you have like 30 artboards to apply this to.
I don't even see a batch render for artboards and Photoshop has that for its files.

Unfotunately when I looked into that does not seem to be the case. However I can resize when I "Save for Web" but that appears to only work for one artboard at a time. I can Save As or Export multipe artboards but not adjust the size. Believe me I would be happy if I could resize multiple artboards upon export but apparently that is not an option.

Exporting Multiple Artboards of Different Formats Easily

I have one document with multiple artboards. I need to export each artboard with different formats and ppi. Is there a way I can do this quickly and efficiently without having to export each artboard individually? Thank you in advance for your time, insight, and help.

It an unusual sitatution. I have a whole document created in illustrator. I'm handing it over to a client for them to work on in-house and they've requested an inDesign file. Ideally I'd like a way of exporting my ai file into an indd file. Haven't been able to find a way of doing this at the moment.

Issues with opening multiple artboard docs in Illustrator CS6

Hi. I'm working in CS6 Cloud. I have a document with multiple artboards. However, when I go to open it, a dialogue box comes up and says "Open Pdf - Select a page from PDF to open...". I can then only open single artboards as separate documents. How do I go back to opening multiple art boards all at once? Thanks.

Thanks for your help! That makes sense...I'm pretty sure I didn't save it as a pdf file, which is why I was getting confused...but maybe in between the document being opened between CS6 Cloud and CS5 (which my partner uses), something weird happened?? I will copy everything back into a new doc again with mulitple artboards and make sure it's saved for compatibility with previous versions, and see where that takes me. Thanks again for your help.

Creating Multiple Artboards

I thought I'd ask this question here seeing as how everything I've learned about scripting has come from the knowledge everyone shares here (granted, I've only been at this a couple weeks now).
I've searched and searched and have been trying for three days to figure this out but can't. I've studied the scripts at http://forums.adobe.com/message/5082308#5082308 and tried implementing them but to no avail.
Basically, I have a document with multiple layers, all containing only one item each. Every placedItem is a tiff, all having the same dimensions. There could be either 4 or 6 of them, no more, no less. I'd like to split them up onto multiple artboards but whenever I try, I keep getting multiple boards put in the same location, e.g., stacked on top of one another. I can't seem to figure out the gridByRow command.
So far, I'm using the following script (that I found here) to build the file, which I've altered to fit my needs.

What I'd like to do at this point is spread these layers out to multiple artboards, which have been made based on the number of layers in the file.

There are a handfull of ways you could go about scripting this… Here is an example of how I would go about it…
I avoid EPS's files where ever possible so this works with TIFF's
As is… it expects all image files to be the same size ( it only tests the first one )
You could test each if the size varies… I've not included the layer sorting but that is easy stuff…

Doug's got it right. It sounds like you are trying to open a later version file in an earlier version. This will always be handled as opening the PDF portion of the file. Try Googling AI_openMultiPagePDF for a script to open these or Resave from the newer version to the older.

Multiple Artboards CS4 versus Crop Area CS3

If i'm getting this right,
1. CS 4 doesn't haven the Crop Area tool anymore.
2. Artboards are limited to 100 artboards per document depent there size.
Question;
Is it possibel to create an artboard from an element/object as you could with Crop Area?
Because in this way you could save "unlimited" artboard "templates" in your document for reuse.

The problem is i've got a citymap, dimensions lets say 1000 mm x 1000 mm and I want to make an atlas from it.
In other words I want to take several 150 mm x 210 mm fragments of the original map and put them on seperate pages.
In Freehand I could make reference rectangles and give them a lensfill and export object only as an eps, pdf etc.
In CS3 I could make Crop Areas from the reference rectangles and export as pdf etc.
In CS4 crop areas is gone and will be converted to Artboards (i read in the forum).
I need the reference rectangles because everytime I export the litlle fragment it must be the same and on the exact same place.
The only way to do this in CS4 is to manualy move the page and bring it in line with the rectangle......
Anyone some other idea's? it's crucial for my workflow and I'm looking if Illustrator is capable to do this so we can switch...

Place command - ai files multiple artboards

Hi everyone,
When I use place command for .ai files that contain multiple artboards, InDesign does not import all fo them, just artboard nr.1.
Is there a way to specify / select the number of artboards I would liek to be placed, selectively?

Export of multiple artboards with only artboards' name, doesnt save to desired folder.

when trying to export multiple artboards into files that only bear the separate artboards' name, i set up the export with the filenames with blank names so set to ".jpg" . i also choose a folder that they are to be saved to.
what happens now is weird: the files will have the folders' name as a basename and will be saved next to the folder, not inside folder.
can you people see this behaviour too?

You can rename the artboards there.
The name gets part of the file name on export.

I'm wondering how to create multiple artboards at once in an existing document. I can manually re-arrange them later, that's fine. But I often find myself needing to create 20+ artboards for some of my complex projects.
Currently, adding those 20+ artboards manually is a pain as you can imagine.

Did CS4's multiple artboards kill any crop area capabilities?

I'm still gobsmacked by the multiple artboard stuff... but I see my favorite CS3 feature, multiple crop areas is gone (or at least appears to be gone).
I came to depend rather heavily on multiple crop areas -- so I'm anxious that some facet of them cannot be replicated by the multiple artboards.
The interface to manage multiple artboards is very very similar... certainly enhanced in some ways too.
What confuses me about them is a statement I saw somewhere that each artboard has it's own layers, symbols, swatches. If so, then this would be a loss for me, as I depended on having one meta-infrastructure for all print crop areas.
Another aspect I have not seen explained very much is whether artboards can overlap. If each artboard has its own layers, and you can have overlapping artboards, I don't really see how artwork that overlaps both boards is handled.
So maybe the statement I saw about not sharing document meta-infrastructure across artboards is false?
I'm definitely handicapped by not having the app installed yet.

Save for web and device never gave the option to save as psd?
But is you are using save for the web ten under image size there is the option to clip to artboard which will give you your 1920 x 1080.
However if you want to export it as a Photoshop and do not want the art outside of the art board to be exported then you can check the option at the bottom left of the bottom left og the export to photoshop dialog to use artboards.
I will point out that if you use this option you will notice it gives you the option to export all the artboards meaning if you place all of your previous files in one ai document you will only have to do one export for all the files you don't even need an action though an action to place the files in a document might save you yet more time.
So they made an improvement that works much better but it requires that you look a bit more carefully to find the feature even though it is right there in front of everyone. So always look for something that is f=different from before that is usually the answer.
I hope this is what you are looking for.
There maybe times when you want the art outside of the document to be included so now you have a clear choice.

Object aligning to unknown artboard

Hello,
I have a document with one artboard.
I have one object that I aligned within the artboard perfectly (centered horizontally and vertically).
There's a second object I copied/pasted from a different document and i'm trying to align it in the center as well. However when I use center alignment, it places the artwork in a totally different position from where it should be appearing.
I cannot figure out why it's doing this. My first guess is that it's aligning based on the artboard in the original document for some reason. Anybody know what's going on?

Turne View >> Show Bounding Box on? You may have a stray element in your selection.
As a test copy and paste into a blank new document and see if you can align to the artboard.
If you are in CS5 see if you have in the transform palette flyout menu >> align to pixel grid turned on.
I doubt this is remembering a previous artboard, once it is gone shoudl nto have any trace in the file of previous artbaord locations.

Preview multiple artboards in bridge

Hi,
I am using the subscription service so I have the most current version of illustrator and Bridge. When I create multiple artboards in an illustrator file and I then preview that file in Bridge I am only able to preview one page/artboard at a time. What I would like to do is see an overview of the illustrator file and all artboards at once with the ability to zoom in and out in bridge at high resolution the more I zoom in.
I have found if I save my illustrator file with the "create pdf compatible file" option not checked it does work but it does not allow me to see a hi-res preview of the entire file (all artboards at once) in bridge. I am just let with a low res preview of the entire file.

The next question is how do you re-order artboards? In other words, if I add a new overall artboard and it becomes #5, how do I change it to become number one and push all the numbers for the other artboards up a number?
