Alternative to endorsing jar files?

I want to use the xerces api jar file rather than the sun xml api files. It seems I have to endorse the jar files by putting it in the lib\endorsed directory. But that is going to globally have an affect. I just want only my portal application to get this jar overriden. Anything I can do with the classloading to get this working? Please help. Thanks a lot!

My point wasn't that I wanted to troubleshoot what I had (though I appreciate the offer). I've actually sorted through a few of the issues already. My overall question is if there is a better alternative. The labview implementation doesn't handle errors well at all. For example, it failed to detect that it couldn't find that value in the file (which was written there by the write function, not by hand so I'm reasonably sure it is properly formatted). I'm more interested to see if this is the major option for config values or if people use an alternative (i.e. xml).

We use weblogic 8.1 for our development purpose... and mostly work on ejb's. Every time a new ear file is created and deployed we need to specify the jar files needed to run that application in server classpath.... is there any alternate way so that v can avoid specifying these jar files in server classpath...

Jar file and classpath problem

I0m writing a program that use the kunststoff.jar Look&Feel.
Now I would like to put all I'm writing into a jar file but I always have a NoClassFoundException when I try to start my application.
here is a MANIFEST:ME I'm using:

Unfortunately you can't embed jars within a jar and
expect them to be referencable for the classpath from
outside the main jar. The "Class-Path" attribute in
the manifest is used to refer to other jar files
outside of your jar file.
The usual approach to solve this problem is to unpack
the jar files you want to embed and then rejar
everything together in one big jar file again. This
isn't always a great approach though, I know I'm
looking for an alternative. So far my only alternative
is dynamic class loading using a classloader, however
this isn't great if you need to refer to several
hundreds or even thousands of classes.thank you very mach...now I understand because it dosen't work correctly!

What are the basic .jar files to be set in web dynpro project classpath

I am having a problem while customizing the ESS. I used DTR, DC and imported configuration. After that, I created project from one of the DC(say ess/jp/addr). Later when I open an iView from any Web Dynpro component, I am getting lot of errors without even making any modifications.
I closed the project and reopened it and reload & rebuilt, but it doesn't solved my problem. In my classpath settings I couldn't find any jar files except the jre_lib. Could you please let me know what are the basic jar files we have to set in classpath and where to get them from. We are using NWDS 7.0.06 version.
Can you please let me know how to solve this or any other way to work around this.
It's an urgent to be fixed as early as possible, plz help me out.

I am getting the following error: Unable to locate class: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: on an iPlanet WS. We have ensured that the classpath in jvm12.conf includes the jar file with path. Any ideas?

Well, now I'm pulling my hair out even more because I can't get it to resolve anything in jaxws-rt.jar at runtime. Note: compile-time still works FINE.
I was messing with classpaths and stuff (and the endorsed dirs option of course) and it was "working" to the extent I had posted before, but then I kept playing with it and at some point I said, this isn't working and I need to reset all this stuff back to the way it was.
... so I did that. And now it won't resolve "PolicyException:"
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sun/xml/ws/policy/PolicyException
This doesn't mean anything to you guys I bet, but that happens when it FIRST gets inside the web service code, which references PolicyException (doesn't even use it at that point.. I'm assuming the import is screwing it up when it's in the constructor). So now it won't resolve at all. Before, it was getting past this point and telling me the "method not found" error on the next line or this same error for WSBindingProvider two lines down, when it's actually being used. AWESOME.
I downloaded the latest jaxws-rt.jar and all its dependencies, shoved that into my lib folder, and set the endorsed dir to that folder (There's kind of a web of dependencies here. jaxws-rt.jar expects all its dependencies to be in the same folder, it seems, so I don't know how it was "working" before when I just copied jaxws-rt.jar into my separate endorsed dir - but I can't move all of those files to endorsed because I need them in my project (which expects them to be in the lib folder)). What happened? It went back to my original "String" error (first error in the first post), which means it's not getting endorsed at all from that location.
What a mess.
Can someone tell me what the heck I'm supposed to do with this jar file?

How do I prevent Spotlight from categorizing 'JAR' files as 'Application'

I'm a java developer and consequently I have a lot of JAR files on the filesystem. The JAR file format is a standard archive format for java, and is used mostly to package library code - the java equivalent of a DLL. They can also be created as 'executable JAR's, but this is (very) infrequent compared to the library usage.
Spotlight seems to think every JAR file is an application, and because I have a lot of java applications and development stuff installed, I can no longer reliably use Spotlight to find actual applications because the search results are overflowing with useless JAR file entries.
Is there any way to configure spotlight to not classify JARS as applications? Or, alternately, can I make Spotlight ignore JARs completely? Either would save me a lot of time..

There are several things in the current version of Spotlight that are either broken or just plain wrong. It looks like you have found another. When I look at the metadata for a jar file I see that its type is, well, a java jar file, and its content tree declares it to be a com.sun.java-archive. Finder gets this right: if you do GetInfo on such a jar file its kind is shown as "Java JAR file"--as it should be.
When I made a saved search, using the Kind drop-down menu to get the pre-defined Application, and then looked to see what criteria Spotlight was using to define "application" (and yes, the search included jar files in its results), I discovered Spotlight was NOT using the simple, straightforward "kMDItemKind=Application" as one would expect. Instead it is using something I had never heard of to define an Application, to wit "_kMDItemGroupId = 8"--furthermore, I believe characterizing applications that way has been deprecated. Be that as it may, it doesn't work to find the things you want, and exclude the things you don't.
There is no way for a user to fix this. The only thing you can do is not let Spotlight define the kind. Thus, if you bring up a search window do not use the Kind drop-down menu to select Application. Instead select Other from the menu and then type Application. You then get only things whose type declaration is Application, and you don't get jar files or widgets.
The other option is to exclude jar files by typing
NOT jar
in the search for box (you'll still get widgets though). You can also add that boolean restriction if you are using the menu bar Spotlight search.

3) Following this blog Convert incoming XML to Excel or Excel XML – Part 1 - XSLT Way if i apply the same logic at sender side, will it work? Because through case studies i came to know that we cannot read a .xls file using XSLT code. Correct me if i am wrong.

The blog you refered to might be for previous versions of PI. You can refer to the following two wikis to find out what are the relevant JAR files for PI 7.3 and also how to get them.

It also looks like for newer versions, you might not need to manually get and add those JAR files into your NWDS project - please refer to the first comment on the blog below. I have not tried it personally as I'm not using the latest NWDS, but you can try that first, and if it does not work, then go get them manually.
PI 7.4 - Adapter Module Creation using EJB 3.0
Do note that you should be using the JAR files that is corresponding to your PI server version.
As for your third question, that does not apply to you. XLS is the older non-XML format, and therefore cannot be read by XLST since it is in binary format.

Why can't I read any of my resources in a jar file?

For an application I was developing, I wanted to create a Binary File using the following code:

}I am using Netbeans 6.5.1., and it groups my projects so that there are folders for build, src, dist, nbproject inside the project folder. The application that I am developing is a graphics demo that requires the use of several text files to represent the maps, so I wanted to read them using a FileInputStream.
I kept this file, "islandmap.txt", in the src folder in my project. In the method above, I coded my program so that the "name" would be "src\islandmap.txt", and it read from the file perfectly. However, I needed to compile it to a Jar file too. After doing that, the program no longer functioned. I remembered when I used a tutorial long ago that used
URL url = getClass().getClassLoader().getResource(fileName) ... in order to get the directory of the files. That made sense, because a person who is running the program via Java Webstart or a Jar Executable would definitely not have the parts of the program located in the same directory, so the code is used to find where the java program is. However, I realized something...
File file = new File( - constructor - )There are four constructors for files, and I only think I could use two. The first is using a string, like I have done before with "src\islandmap.txt." Now, the URL url = getClass().getClassLoader().getResource(fileName) part, it was used before to locate a URL in order to open a buffered image. The constructor for File does not support URLs, but instead supports URIs.I tried converting between the two, changing a URL into a string, and producing a URI from the string. But it did not work, giving me an error that URI was not hierarchical. And that's when I realized that they were certainly not interchangable.
More specifically, here is my code as of now:

Start with
URL url = getClass().getClassLoader().getResource(fileName)Then observe that URL has a [openStream()|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/net/URL.html#openStream()] method that will give you an InputStream. Since you are reading text you might want to create an InputStreamReader from which you can do your reading much like you used the FileReader before when you were working with a File.
Class also has a [getResourceAsStream()|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/lang/Class.html#getResourceAsStream(java.lang.String)] which combines the first two steps into one. Ie use getResource() as you mentioned when you want to get a URL that some other class will use to read (eg an image) or use getResourceAsStream() when you are going to do the reading yourself.

Picking up JAR files from JSP's

I have a web application with some JAR files that live under the WEB-INF/lib directory.
My understanding of webservers (Tomcat, Weblogic, Dynamo, Orion, Resin) is that files under
WEB-INF/lib will be picked up on the servlet CLASSPATH.
Using iAS 6 SP3 however, the deploytool seems to unjar all the JAR files under WEB-INF/lib, which is
fine except that some of my classes aren't being picked up. My custom tag classes are being found,
but org.xml.sax.XMLReader is not found, even though the class file exists.
Any idea what is happening here?

Wildcards definitely work as we tried this on the course.
Alternatively, you could make sure the directory you are processing only has files in for this process and nothing else then you could process everything regardless of the name just use .

Running Jar Files created in Sun Java Studio

I am still trying to explore the functionalities (especially as regards deployment issues) of this robust IDE. However I do have a problem. I have developed a very basic program that connects to a database (MSSQL) using Java Studio 8. However after building the jar file, if I try to execute the jar file it gives me this message
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver.....
But all goes well within the IDE and it runs well if I use my notepad or vi editor,compile it from the command line and execute the generated class file. The classpath have been set for all the necessary jdbc jar files.
Any Help Will Be Appreciated

1. Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8 is based on NetBeans 4.1 which does not provide direct support for packing an application. One alternative you may want to consider is to use NetBeans 5.0 (http://www.netbeans.info/downloads/download.php?type=5.0) or JSE 8.1 which is based on NB5.0 and which is now in beta (http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jsenterprise/downloads/index.jsp).
You may want to refer to http://www.netbeans.org/kb/articles/javase-deploy.html for packing and deploying a standalone application is NB5.0 or JSE8.1.
2. Using JSE8, you may want to try copying all the library jars (including database drivers) used by your application to your projects dist directory manually and then package them all into one jar.
3. You should not have to know the exact location of the jdbc jar on the client machine. How are you instantiating the driver in your code? Are you using 'Class.forName()'? If so, java should be able to pick up the driver from the classpath. (Pl. ref to http://forum.sun.com/jive/thread.jspa?forumID=122&threadID=62696, which may be of help).

How to create a running jar-file

I created a "Java Class Library" project including 20 class files in several packages and some libraries.
Because I would like to start the project from the console, I added the main-class property (right-click project, Properties, Run). Then I cleaned and built the project and tried to start it with the following command:
java -jar PROJECTNAME.jarBut it won't work, because the archive is not complete: MANIFEST.MF lacks the main-class and all involved libraries.
I managed to add the main-class attribute manually, but adding all library references seems to be very error-prone.
So does anyone know if I did something wrong or if this is a bug of Creator?

The main intent of this project type is to provide a libraray which normally wouldn't run with a "main". I suggest you use NetBeans to create a "Java Application" project. Here's what is in the README.txt file produced with the jar. This looks like what you're looking to do. So you can create the Jar in NetBeans then if you want to use it in Java Studio Creator, you can add it to the Creator project. Also, if you caught the news at JavaOne, we are providing Creator features for a pack that will run in NetBeans so you won't have to switch back and forth between the tools. Keep an eye on the NetBeans and Creator web sites for more info.

How to include JAR file in NetBean library?

i have downloaded JavaMail jar file and now i want to include this file into NetBean library. pls help me out.

You can add the jar file to Netbeans as an external library by choosing 'Tools' on the menu bar and then selecting 'Library Manager'. In there you can give it a name and the path to the jar file. Once it is setup, if you go to your project properties, and click the 'Libraries' option on the left you will be able to add it. Select 'Add Library' and choose the one that you just created, it will now be part of your project.
Alternatively, if you don't want to set it up as a library in Netbaeans, go straight to the project properties, select 'Libraries' and then select the 'Add Jar/Folder' option, now you can navigate to your jar file and add it to your project.

Maintain local in-house jar files while java plug-in is upgraded

I have some in-house developed jar files which are kept at C:\Program Files\Java\jre_xxx\lib\applet. However, starting from Jre 1.4.2, there is
an "autoupdate" feature which allows auto-download and installation of newer version of JRE to the client PC.
Though it is a good feature, there is problem in using the in-house developed jar files because the local jar files will not copied to the
corresponding java jre directory automatically. I need to copied the jar files manually to the new jre\lib\applet directory.
Besides me, there is many users at the site encounter the same problem. Are there any suggestions to improve the matter.

This is why you should not put your files inside Java's system directories.
Bite the bullet and make the change - move your files outside of Java's directories.
The alternative is to develop and maintain a corporate intranet Java update functionality.
