An issue with arrays

I am trying to write an applet which accepts five integers from the user, stores them in an array and then outputs them to a JTextArea. That bit is fine. But I also need to write it so that if the user enters two identical integers then it does not output the duplicate. (This is an exercise from Deitel & Deitel - yes, I'm a beginner! And I am aware that it mixes awt with swing...but that's what the book asks for).
This is what I have written so far:
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.*;
public class InclusiveArray extends JApplet implements ActionListener {
     JLabel promptLabel;
     JTextField inputField;
     JTextArea outputField;
     int[] array = new int[5];
     int i = 0;
     String output = "The array contains: ";
     //create GUI
     public void init()
          Container container = getContentPane();
          container.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
          promptLabel = new JLabel("Enter a whole integer: ");
          inputField = new JTextField(10);
          inputField.addActionListener(this);
          outputField = new JTextArea(20, 20);
          container.add(promptLabel);
          container.add(inputField);
          container.add(outputField);
     } //end method init
     public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent event)
          array[i] = Integer.parseInt(event.getActionCommand());
          ++i;
          output += array[i] + " ";
          if (i>0)
          if (array[i] != array[0] && array != array[1] && array[i] != array[2] && array[i] != array[3] && array[i] != array[4])
               output += array[i] + " ";
          /*else
               output += " same ";*/
          outputField.setText(output);
          output = "\n The array now contains: ";
This works, but, of course, the applet stops outputting integers as soon as it gets to array != array[1] because, of course, array[1] will always be equal to array[1].
I am trying to find a way to compare the integer with every elements in the array apart from the integer itself.
I found a way to compare each integer with the integer before it, in the array. And that worked - but it's not exactly what I need.
Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thank you all for your help. I decided to use a method to sort the array as I'm still not familiar with HashMap or LinkedHashSet. I'll go and read up on them now...
In the meantime, here's my code. I have a question - I spent a while playing around with the code but I found that my output always contained only 4 elements when, in fact, the array contained 5 (this was verified by outputting the contents of the array to the screen using System.out.println). I solved this by initializing the array with 6 elements instead of 5. There is now a 'wasted' zero at the end which does not show up in the output.
How could I do this with a 5-elements array? I'm sure the answer is staring me in the face, but I can't seem to find it!

  • Having compiler issues with Array, can anyone help please?

    Using your Invoice class created in lab02, write a client program that allows the user to input three Invoice objects into an array of Invoice objects. After you have inputted all of the invoices, print a heading and then output all of the array elements (Invoice objects) by calling the method from your Invoice class that displays all of the data members on a single line using uniform field widths to insure that all Invoice objects will line up in column format (created in Lab04). At the end of the loop, display the calculated total retail value of all products entered in the proper currency format.
    Example of possible program execution:
    Part Number : WIDGET
    Part Description : A fictitious product
    Quantity : 100
    Price          : 19.95
    (etc.)
    Example of possible output
    Part Number          Part Description          Quantity          Price     Amount
    WIDGET          A fictitious product     100          19.95     199.95
    Hammer               9 pounds          10          5.00     50.00
    (etc.)
    Total Retail Value:                                   249.95
    This is what I have so far at the bottom, can anyone tell me what I'm doin wrong please

    Change this (check my comments):
    for (int i=0; <=2; i++) // what is <=2??  check the fixed version
    total+=array.getPaymentAmount(); //two things 1) this needs to be inside the for-loop 2) you need to tell the array which index to look at
    system.out.println("The Total retail value is: %.2f\n") //no need for \n because println does it automagically
    }to this:
    for(int i=0; i<array.length; i++) {
        total += array.getPaymentAmount();
    System.out.println("The total retail value is: " + total); //if you need another blank line like above be my guest
    Honestly, I didn't look past this part so fix this and post again if something is still broken.

    0Well, your array has a size of 0, but you'reasking
    for the 7th item (yourArray[6])
    That's likely not very helpful, but it's all I gotYou're right it isn't really that helpful, but i do
    appreciate your taking a moment to reply. The part
    that is really confusing me is how on earth it is
    making it to the 6th position before it has a problem
    as this is an array of size 100 and I iterate through
    the entire thing. Well, the array that is causing this error not an array of size 100, it's an array of size 0. So I'm curious as to what array it's complaining about...

  • Issue with Array in report

    Hello,
    I'm trying to create an parameter and associated array for a record selection I would like to give the end user. I created a parameter field called "Incentives" and created a new formula field "IncentivesArray":
    If "*" in {?Incentives} then true else totext({rpt_EquipmentMaster.EquipmentID}) in {?Incentives} and true
    What I was hoping would happen is that "*" would be the default and select all values in the table, or if not then which ever values the user did want.
    And in my Formula Workshop -> Record Selection, I added {@InentivesArray}. But I only want certain equipment types so i added another statement to my record selection of "{rpt_EquipmentMaster.EquipmentType}=3".
    When I run the report and select "*" for the Incentive parameter, all drives are displayed on the report and it looks good.  But when I do select a particular EquipmentID to be displayed, nothing appears on the report and when I check the SQL statement (under Report -> Show SQL Query), I notice the the rpt_EquipmentMaster.EquipmentID="XX" is not in my WHERE clause so it is not being applied to the report and I'm not sure why.
    Suggestions?  Need more info?  Just not sure what is missing here.

    Hi Trey,
    Statements like these:
    totext({rpt_EquipmentMaster.EquipmentID}) in {?Incentives} are usually NOT converted to where clause due to the datatype conversion being applied!
    That shouldn't stop CR from completely applying the filter though. Although it doesn't push the filter to the database (via the where clause) it does pull all records and apply the filter locally - ofcourse that slows the report depending upon how many records you're dealing with here.
    If you really want this to go as part of the where clause and if you're reporting directly against tables/views you can create a 'SQL Expression' field that just converts the {rpt_EquipmentMaster.EquipmentID} field to text and use that in the record selection formula.
    An example SQL Expression,if you're reporting against Oracle would look like this:
    to_char("rpt_EquipmentMaster.EquipmentID")
    The record selection formula would then be:
    ("*" In {?Incentives} OR {%SQL_Expression_Field} IN {?Incentives})
    AND {rpt_EquipmentMaster.EquipmentType}=3
    You should now see a where clause!

  • Strange issue with POF: byte array with the value 94

    This is a somewhat strange issue we’ve managed to reduce to this test case. We’ve also seen similar issues with chars and shorts as well. It’s only a problem if the byte value inside the byte array is equal to 94! A value of 93, 95, etc, seems to be ok.
    Given the below class, the byte values both in the array and the single byte value are wrong when deserializing. The value inside the byte array isn’t what we put in (get [75] instead of [94]) and the single byte value is null (not 114).
    Pof object code:
    package com.test;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.util.Arrays;
    import com.tangosol.io.pof.PofReader;
    import com.tangosol.io.pof.PofWriter;
    import com.tangosol.io.pof.PortableObject;
    public class PofObject1 implements PortableObject {
         private byte[] byteArray;
         private byte byteValue;
         public void setValues() {
              byteArray = new byte[] {94};
              byteValue = 114;
         @Override
         public void readExternal(PofReader reader) throws IOException {
              Object byteArray = reader.readObjectArray(0, null);
              Object byteValue = reader.readObject(1);
              System.out.println(Arrays.toString((Object[])byteArray));
              System.out.println(byteValue);
              if (byteValue == null) throw new IOException("byteValue is null!");
         @Override
         public void writeExternal(PofWriter writer) throws IOException {
              writer.writeObject(0, byteArray);
              writer.writeObject(1, byteValue);
    Using writer.writeObjectArray(0, byteArray); instead of writer.writeObject(0, byteArray); doesn't help. In this case byteArray would be of type Object[] (as accessed through reflection).
    This is simply put in to a distributed cache and then fetched back. No EPs, listeners or stuff like that involved:
         public static void main(String... args) throws Exception {
              NamedCache cache = CacheFactory.getCache("my-cache");
              PofObject1 o = new PofObject1();
              o.setValues();
              cache.put("key1", o);
              cache.get("key1");
    Only tried it with Coherecne 3.7.1.3.

    Hi,
    POF uses certain byte values as an optimization to represent well known values of certain Object types - e.g. boolean True and False, some very small numbers, null etc... When you do read/write Object instead of using the correct method I suspect POF gets confused over the type and value that the field should be.
    There are a number of cases where POF does not know what the type is - Numbers would be one of these, for example if I stored a long of value 10 on deserialization POF would not know if that was an int, long double etc... so you have to use the correct method to get it back. Collections are another - If you serialize a Set all POF knows is that you have serialized some sort of Collection so unless you are specific when deserializing you will get back a List.

    It sounds like a issue with FireFox and Workspace.
    LiveCycle Workspace 9.0 - End User Issues
    ** New for LiveCycle ES2 SP1 ** Problem logging into Workspace 9.0 using Firefox 3.6.x in Windows
    When you log into Workspace 9.0 using the Firefox 3.6.x web browser in Windows, you are unable to enter text in the User ID or Password fields. The current workaround is to select another window (or empty area on the desktop), reselect the web browser to reset the focus, and then enter text in the User ID or Password fields.
    You can see it in the release notes at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/9.0/releasenotes.html#EndUserIssues.
    Hope that helps!

  • Issues with Synchronize to and from DB (version 3.3.0.747)

    Having an issue with syncing the model and the data dictionary is a very specific case:
    1. Reverse engineer an existing table (T1)
    2. Copy the table (in data modeler) - T2
    3. Rename the table, make changes (add columns and keys)
    4. Forward engineer the new table (i.e., export and run DD for T2L)
    5. Make additional changes to new table (T2) in data model.
    6. Run sync db with model - the sync routine compares my new table (t2) to the original table (T1) in the database! It cannot "find" my new table (T2) in the database to compare to.
    7. Alternatively try to sync the model with the db - this time it wants to sync the original table (T1) to itself (which has no change) and DROP my new table (T2) from the model.
    It appears that sync is looking at meta data one my new table (T2) that contains the original copied table's name (T1). And in fact if I look at the table Summary properties - the source db object property does list the original table name (T1).
    I also tried to reverse engineer the new table (T2) to the merge with the model, that has the same behavior as the sync.
    Is there a way to fix this short of dropping T1 from the schema?

    Hi Kent,
    thanks for reporting the problem. I logged a bug and ER for that.
    Is there a way to fix this short of dropping T1 from the schema?Unnecessary information about source need to be cleared. Here is a script that will help on that:
    //array with 2 elements to illustrate different use cases - the first is used to have exact match on table name
    // the second one ("REGIO") can be used with following check in inList function
    //if(table.getName().startsWith(list)){
    var list = ["Regionsv1","REGIO"];
    function isInList(table){
         for(var i=0;i<list.length;i++){
              // different approaches to match table name can be used
              // be aware of letter case
              //if(table.getName().startsWith(list[i])){
              if(table.getName().equalsIgnoreCase(list[i])){
                   return true;
         return false;
    function clearSourceStampforTable(table){
         clearSourceStamp(table);
         cols = table.getElements();
         for(var i=0;i<cols.length;i++){
              clearSourceStamp(cols[i]);
         keys = table.getKeySet().toArray();
         for(var i=0;i<keys.length;i++){
              clearSourceStamp(keys[i]);
              if(keys[i].isFK()){
                   clearSourceStamp(keys[i].getFKIndexAssociation());
    function clearSourceStamp(object){
         object.setSourceConnName("");
         object.setSourceObjSchema("");
         object.setSourceObjName("");
         object.setSourceDDLFile("");
         object.setDirty(true);
    tables = model.getTableSet().toArray();
    for(var i=0;i<tables.length;i++){
         table = tables[i];
         if(isInList(table)){
              clearSourceStampforTable(table);

  • Internal hard drive issue with Mac Pro

    I work for two office that share information through a VPN. Each office has one Mac Pro being used as a server for data storage. The Pros have four internal hard drives (1TB each).
    Hard drives in the Pro for OFFICE 1 were configured like so:
    HD1 - OS/Boot drive
    HD2 - Time Machine backup of HD1/DATA1/DATA2
    DATA1 - Data storage
    DATA2 - Data storage
    Three weeks ago: Time Machine could not find HD2 and could not backup. I rebooted the machine and HD2 reappeared. However, after the reboot, DATA1 did not mount. I was unable to find DATA1 in Disk Utility. However, the drive could be accessed by all other Macs on the network. This machine was taken to the local Apple Store and we were told that HD2 was a bad drive and need to be replaced. We opted not to replaced the drive at this time and turned Time Machine backups off. We haven't had any problems with DATA1 since. (NOTE: During the weeks prior, the client machines intermittently lost connection with DATA1 and would have to reconnect)
    Last week: OFFICE 2 - Mac Pro hard drives configured the same as OFFICE 1; however, HD2 was not used for TM backups. TM was turned on and set to backup HD1/DATA1/DATA2 to HD2 (exactly like OFFICE 1). The next day, TM could not find HD2 and backups stopped running. I rebooted the machine, HD2 reappeared, but we did not restart the TM backups.
    Today: OFFICE 2 client machines have experienced intermittent disconnecting of DATA1.
    I wasn't extremely concerned with the situation at OFFICE 1 as these Pros are almost five years old and in constant use. We plan on purchasing an external drive for the TM backups. HOWEVER, with a similar situation now being experienced in OFFICE 2, I am perplexed.
    Could both machine be experiencing hard drive failures weeks apart? They were both purchased and installed at the same time.
    Is there a known issue with TM and internal drives?
    One difference between the two machines: OFFICE 1 is running OS X 10.8.5; OFFICE 2 runs 10.6.8
    Any suggestions/help is appreciated. Thanks!

    Relying on TimeMachine has some issues, along with only having one, I use at least two swapping TimeMachine so that they rotate AND I clone every drive (volume actually) so I can swap drives if need be, especially useful for t he system but good for any drive.
    Power issues in t he buildings?
    There are some programs that will scan for and report and./or attempt to reassign a failing sector ("fail" is qualitative, is 10 write failures a fail? then the 9th is not but it is a "weak sector.") Some run in the background.
    Mirror can be 2 or 3 ( I prefer 3, that way if one fails I STILL have a mirror array in place) where any failure is not acceptable, AND where the array data is backed up usually - less important  when using a three-drive configurations.
    How old, when last initialized (zero), and is it showing spare blocks being used? that last is the most indicative of failed drive.
    Rare but a bad SATA cable or power (seeing how the cables are tucked away) is only way generally for multiple failures in same drive bay or computer. Note: early on in 2006-7 there were reports of some customers having motherboard and trouble with a drive bay , and t he problems showed up early.
    Often though it is NVRAM or SMC related issue trigged by something else, a USB cable or device that is faulty, even a PCIe controller that is the culprit. And replacing cable, keyboard, device, and resetting SMC and NVRAM (often NVRAM needed to be done multiple times, but never keep resetting SMC) - unplugged and when you connect back up, do not install anything other than system, keyboard and mouse and see if that helps.
    With a drive, likely the drive in 85% or more, is fine, but the directory is not, or it needs to be erased to rebuild all the system partitions.
    1TB is small for TimeMachine. 350% of the amount of data, and always have free space for a full backup set of all the data. T.M. will try and prefers to automatically backup any and everything plugged in and connected, rather than my preference which is ASK FIRST to add a drive to TM backup set, otherwise leave it out. 600GB of data and system would mean 2.5TB drive, maybe 2TB minimum.

  • Issues with signal input adaptive filtering, it won't filter the added noise from the input waveform

    Hello,
    I have an issue with my adaptive noise cancellation program. Essentially I want to input a custom wav add noise to it and then filter the noise away in order to gain the custom wav again.
    While doing so I want to read the learning curve and read the adaptive coefficients. Unfortunately I have an issue when it comes to the filtering of the custom wav+noise. It won't filter the signal at all.
    It would be helpful if someone could have a look at it and possibly help me out.
    Thanks!

    Hey Jan,
    Thanks for the reply. I am currently using the Adaptive Filter Toolkit in order to obtain those VIs. The VIs which are in use are the LMS Adaptive Filter ones.
    I figured there might be an error with the input of the array. This VI requires a DBL Array but it seems like it can not process it.
    The "Get Wavefirn Components" works better now but I still have an issue with a time. I put a 9s wav file in but it only computes it in a very short time and I can not play the file while it is computing.
    I added the modified program to the attachments.
    This program is ought to read a waveform file add noise to it and then use an adaptive filter in order to get the orginal waveform back again and if possible either store or play the final waveform.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Issue with declaring variable

    I am developing a multiuser application in flash, using smartfox server and as 2.0, but i am having an issue with defining/declaring a variable/object/array, and then accessing it. I am attempting to define "curMap" (whether it be a variable, array, object, whatever works) within the following function, as the returned array from the server, "resObj". This works fine as long as i only call up "curMap" WITHIN this function(as you see in the  line :  r_txt.text = curMap;)  however whenever I try to call up "curMap" on the frame coding, outside the function, it comes back as undefined, or typically nothing.  Any Ideas as to how to properly do/assign this? I have tried various things(such as _root., _global, or defining the var "curMap" outside the function) with no luck.
    Here is my Code:
    smartfox.onExtensionResponse = function(resObj:Object, type:String)
            if (type == "xml")
                    if (resObj._cmd == "getMap")
                        curMap = resObj.db[0];
                        r_txt.text = curMap;
                    }else if (resObj._cmd == "getSurr"){
                     surrMap = resObj.db;
                     b_txt.text = surrMap[0];
    thanks

    ahhh! yup that fixes it, thanks!

  • EJB Issue with return empty children in join fetch query

    I'm a newbie and still trying to learn all of the facets of EJB 3.0 (and other backend capabilities) however could not find this issue anywhere resolved.
    I have a recursive table which has a 0,1-n relationship with itself. In this case, I want to query for all objects and fetch the resulting children.
    To do this I have written the following query:
    select o from Node o inner join fetch o.childrenNodeList order by o.nodeorder
    If my database has the following entries:
    Parent
    Child
    Grandchild
    The above query will get all 3 and allow me to access the list of children through getChildrenNodeList, however, for Grandchild this returns "An attempt was made to traverse a relationship using indirection that had a null Session...." for Parent and Child however it works like it should and gets the fetched rows.
    Is there a way for me to either:
    1. Modify the query so that the getChildrenNodeList will return a 0 sized array (so I can test for no children)
    2. Modify the getter such that I can check that the parent really has no children and not some issue with the query
    Thanks for any help,
    Kris

  • Problem is detected with Array : 01

    I was backing up my server when it suddenly turned off. When it restarted it showed a critical error message saying "Problem is detected with Array : 01".
    Windows tried starting and kept rebooting so I just turned it off.
    When I launch the RAID utility I clearly see that the drive 02:01 seems ok but the other one is marked as "failed orisconnected" (it is connected ans spinning).
    This is the spec: On the server I have windows 2012R2 installed on two HD 1TB on RAID1.
    I habe an unused NAS, so I decided to create an iSCSI drive as a Target, and run the windows backup utility to do a Full Backup on it.hat may I have done wrong and how could I resolve this issue?
    This clearly is related to the windows backup utility since this server was working fine until then.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    The issue could be due to that one of the two drive is failed in the RAID 1. You need to replace the failed drive and rebuild the array automatically.

    The Java class StringReturnArray is a serializable JavaBean with one property, a String[] called strings. The corresponding complexType (that works when used as a method parameter type) is stringReturnArrayType:
    <complexType name="stringArrayType">
    <sequence>
    <element name="str" type="string" maxOccurs="unbounded" />
    </sequence>
    </complexType>
    <complexType name="stringReturnArrayType">
    <sequence>
    <element name="strings" type="tns:stringArrayType" />
    </sequence>
    </complexType>
    and I've type mapped in the binding with
    <format:typeMap typeName="typens:stringReturnArrayType" formatType="ejbinterfacetest.StringReturnArray" />
    Anyone know why this would be? Is there any way I can get more information out of BPEL or OC4J regarding the fault? (I've already turned the BPEL domain logging to All)
    Cheers,
    Chris.

    Any luck with this? I am running into the same error. Apparently, this is not an issue with Java binding, but when invoking remote EJBs, we run into this. I am running 10.1.3.1 and the error is:

  • Mobileconfig issue with ipad

    Hello everyone,
    I am facing an issue with the usage of mobileconfig to push profiles into Ipad/Iphone. This has been tested with IOS 8.1(iPad) and 8.3(iPhone).
    My profile has been generated manually(writing through apple key references) and then with the IPhone Config Utility, this profile works great with mac os X.x versions, tested on Snow Leopard, Maverick.
    This profile is here to setup an EAP-TLS connection, with server authentication, client authentication and CA certificate inside the profile.
    My connection is setup properly and I can connect on mac OS X as I said, but on iPad/iPhone after the profile installation, I get a screen to fill infos (login/pw) to connect to the network. As this is an EAP-TLS network I shouldn't have this, and I should have a choice of certificate(as my identity) if there were one thing to choose before the connection.
    So now I fill the information for login/pw and it still impossible to click the button 'Connect'.
    To have an idea this is how my "configured ssid" via the profile appear on the iPad/iPhone if I try to connected to it:
    http://imgur.com/dUOENth
    As you guessed 'Rejoindre = Connect'
    I have been through multiple threads and cannot find the source of the issue.
    My mobileconfig file is signed, my profile is trusted when installed as I ask to trust my newly pushed CA, I also try to install the CA before and then push the profile, same result.
    Lastly, the configuration of EAP-TLS with manually installed certificate is working great, only the autoconfig by profile is not. The auto configuration by profile with PEAP is working fine also.
    Here is my profile(I removed the content as some of the information are not supposed to be public, TestEAP = CA, svr = server authentication cert and antoine = client authentication cert):
