ANN: Javascript utility to make auto-updating apps a bit easier

I'm new around here, apologies if this isn't the right place
to post this.
I had to make a few separate AIR apps recently
(HTML/Javascript) that would each be capable of auto-updating
themselves (check a website for new version, if so download &
install). I put something together that lets me do this with a
small amount of code & uploaded it to Google Code to share:
air-simple-updater.
Hopefully it can save at least someone a few minutes... :)

Douglas --
Back in OS 8.6, I used to create folders to keep similar apps together, too. I also used to "clean up" fonts a lot.
After deleting several System fonts and rendering my Mac useless, I decided to stop cleaning up.  If you can arrange them in Launchpad, good.  But don't go rearranging apps in the Applications folder, OK?  Updates will not work if you put apps within a self-created folder.

    any suggestions ?

Have you checked the google play app? Try to clear data and force stop it under settings-apps-all. Set it up again.

  • Does iOS 5 allow users to auto update apps?

I know if you download an app on one device it can be synced to the other devices over the air, but does iOS5 allow automatic updates of apps so you do not have to click on updates and update all in the app store?

I was also under the impression that iOS5 would feature automatic app updates. But that does not seem to be the case.

  • Auto Update of 64 Bit Flash 11 on Vista Turns Zombie

Early this morning there was an update of Flash 11 on my Vista Home Premium system.  In this case, it was Flash 11, 64-Bit Plugin.  Everything went fine and it completed successfully.  However, Flash has disappeared from my system - kind of.  It's there and it's not there too.
The graphic below shows that my system thinks Flash 11 is installed.  However, nothing can find it including a file/directory search and my browser, which is Firefox in my case.  Note that the file size of the plugin install and the Flash 11 player updated a few days ago are now both zero.  The Flash help center can't find it either and thinks it's not installed on my system at all.
Anyone else having a similar problem?  All components of Flash 11 were working last night before the update.
    Cheers,
    Lonnie

The answer to the first question is that the Abobe help site does not see anything installed for Flash.  That is, the box is empty as if you have noting installed.
Here are the visual answers to the System32 and SysWOW64 questions:
Obviously, they are not empty, but noting in the OS or the Adobe help site sees the content here.
    Thanks for responding.

  • Cancel auto updating

Hi, how do I stop my widgets and apps from automatically updating?  Thanks

Open the Play Store app.  Tap the three bars in the upper right-hand corner.  Tap Settings.  Tap Auto Update Apps and you'll get a pop-up with three choices; tap Do Not Auto Update Apps.  You then can close out of the Play Store.  Now whenever your apps have updates, you'll get a notification in your notification screen and you can choose when or if you want to apply the updates.

  • App auto updates over personal hotspot?

    Here's the situation:
On my iPhone running iOS 7, under the settings for iTunes & App Store, I have "Use Cellular Data" set to OFF.
On my wi-fi-only iPad running iOS 7, under the settings for iTunes & App Store, I have automatic downloads of app updates set to ON
Question:  If I set up a personal hotspot using my iPhone and connect to it using my iPad, will my iPad download app updates over my cellular data connection?

Yes, the iPad will download app updates over your iPhone's cellular data. I just tested it.  I was tethered to my iPhone using Bluetooth, which I figured to make it even less likely to do so, but as soon as I turned on auto updates it started updating apps.
It's not obvious at first either. You can't see any progress bars. You will just notice  the number of pending updates gradually decreasing, and in the App Store "Updates" section you will notice apps appear as updated on this date.

  • Phantom Usage - iPhone Auto Update of Apps - How to turn off?

Since upgrading to 2.2 the "Usage" of my phone has gone way up. Example, my phone since last charge has been on for 2 day 17 hours 15 minutes. My call time has been 35 minutes, however my usage time has been 2 hours 55 minutes. I talked to Apple and they have had reports on "Phantom" usage. That is Apps and system software not shutting down. All the rep could do was to make me an appointment with the Apple Store 3 hours away.
Under setting's I have about 10 Apps that are in the "AutoUpdate Settings List". I think this could be the problem. How the heck do I turn this Auto Update Off????
    Thanks

I've had my phone come back from sleep with the red number around app store when I haven't opened app store lately. I thought that was a normal feature, like mail.
You mean it should not do that?
I cannot find any setting which controls it however.
PS. I have no idea if maybe it is getting that info through itunes sync or wifi or wireless or what -- I just know it mysteriously pops up without me looking.

Hello I am just wondering why there is a message of error 1004 when i tryed to make the update on my apps. Does someone know what it means?

Yes, many know what this means.  You can too.  Just type in "error 1004" in the search box at the top of this page.  Or, just look to the right.  You'll find many links in the "More Like This" box.

  • When i update apps on my iphone they need the ID that i used when i downloaded these app and i forgot this ID and a make a new ID how i used the new one to update these apps thanks

    Hello all,
when i update apps on my iphone they need the ID that i used when i downloaded these apps and i forgot this ID and a make a new ID
How i used the new one to update these apps?
    thanks

Your device can hold apps from multiple IDs, but to update them you have to swicth identities which is time consuming. If possible use only the one ID. If you need to reset the password for your old ID visit My Apple ID.

  • Apple iOS 7 app auto updates and supervised devices

I'm in the process of deploying a small number of iPads to our internal users, we had a question around automatic app updates in iOS 7. It would be nice if these devices were able to pull app updates down and install them automatically, but there are 2 problems with this for us. The first is that an itunes account was used to aquire a few free apps, these apps were then installed via configurator, but we will not be signing in to this account on the device. Default behavior unless a supervised iPad is plugged into itunes or signed in manually is to leave the apple id field blank, will updates install without an apple id on the device? Also, if a user signs in to there perosnal apple id will automatic updates download for an app downloaded with a different apple id? Second, were removing the app store from the device, but allowing apps to be installed. This should in theory allow updates to be installed automatically on the device, however we are unsure if this is the case. Does the app store need to be enabled for the device to check in? or does automatic updating happen regardless?

I can now confirm the apple technician was incorrect. Auto updates WILL NOT install on a device that does not have an apple id signed into it. I've done as much testing as I could with and without signing in and none of the multiple devices I have will automatically download updates until I sign in to the account the app was purchased under. Ultimately this is new for apple, and in addition to that this scenario is faced by very few customers managing these devices So i understand getting this information incorrect. This post is more or less a warning to anyone managing supervised ipads where applications are being installed and no apple id associated with the device, dont rely on automatic updates to keep your apps up to date; you will either have to sign into the ipad and turn on automatic updating, or manually install each update via configurator when they are released.

  • How do you make Mozilla listen to users and stop FFFFirefox Auto Updating despite being set to NOT auto update?

    I am spitting nails
After all the STUPID problems outlined here
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/999831?esab=a&s=&r=0&as=s
I set Firefox to stop auto updating,
Then the other day I installed a new user on my laptop, when they loaded Firefox it auto updated MY version of Firefox.
    Has NOTHING been learnt?
    STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID
    So I have 2 questions
How do you make Mozilla listen to users?
and how do prevent what happened to me happening again?

    SuperSluether
Not a millionth, you have only provided 150 answers and I doubt they were all this issue.
If you don't like it, don't use it.
If a business took this attitude they would soon be out of business
    Updates help KEEP YOU SAFE
Sometimes, but in my experience FFirefox updates can really screw up your system, lose you data, mess up your user interface. I have run IT for one of the biggest intranets on the planet and we never allowed even Mictosoft updates until we did User Acceptance Testing and understood the impact of the upgrade. I am a grown up not a child, I have system where I test updates for performance, security and impact, I WILL DECIDE when I want to install it. If Mozilla wants to provide real security updates I would take them but if you look at the link in my OP you will see it said an update was security and it completely messed up.
Updates add tons of great new features
Actually with FFirefox in my experience they take more away than they add, things I did not ask them to take, they do not look at my config and leave my settings as they were and then tell me about new options, no they completely screw my productivity as it takes days to figure out how to undo the kwap they have added. Copying the AWFUL Chrome interface is not an improvement, Google has one of the worst UI's on the planet accross all their products.
Firefox is designed to be customized PER USER, NOT CROSS-SYSTEM
There are some things that benefit from being per user and some that are per machine, windows has group policies per machine and per user. My OP is telling Mozilla that this is another area where they have "designed" badly, I tell them this so that they improve it and in the vain hope that there is some config setting that will stop this nonsense.
So SuperSluether you have not really helped, all you seem to say is FO if you do not like it. Good job you do not run a business. With that attitude probably best you do not contribute.

  • How do i deactivate the auto updation on my iphone 4,i want to use only watsapp but when i am turning on my celleular data all apps starts updating theirself, please help me

how do i deactivate the auto updation on my iphone 4,i want to use only watsapp but when i am turning on my celleular data all apps starts updating theirself, please help me.I am not using any internet pack other than watsapp.

iPhone do not do automatic update. You have to manually trigger the updates.
If your Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Automatic Downloads > Music, Apps, Books are ON then when you purchase any new content/item with any devices/computer iTunes, it will automatically download. Switch it OFF if you do not want that to happen.

  • HT201263 My iPad 1 can only be updated to iOS 5 yet most apps run on iOS 7. Why can't I make the update on my iPad 1? Is this so I buy another iPad 2+? Now why would I want to buy something that will be obsolete in a few years?

My iPad 1 can only be updated to iOS 5 yet most apps run on iOS 7. Why can't I make the update on my iPad 1? Is this so I buy another iPad 2+? Now why would I want to buy something that will be obsolete in a few years?  I really want to purchase an Live TV plan yet I need iOS 7 to run most TV apps.
Can Apple tell me why my iPad 1 is obsolete?
    g

It's not obsolete as much as the first gen simply lacks the power to run the newer operating systems. IT doesn't have enough RAM. If someone managed to hack it to get iOS 6 or 7 on there they'd just have a slow, boggy and unresponsive device. (think putting windows 7 on an old laptop.
Unfortunately software moves faster than hardware. Every thing goes obsolete. I've had my ipad 2 for two and a half years now and I know it only has so much longer left to it too. Just the 'joys' of advancing technology.

  • Droid X won't download auto updates for apps from Marketplace

I'm having problems with my Droid x auto downloading app update from marketplace.  When I try to update an app that is supposed to auto update, my Droid X says "starting download" then goes no farther, even if I let it sit for hours.
On those apps that require a manual update, I have no problems.  They download just fine when I tell them to.
Is there anyway to set all my apps to manual update, or does anyone have any idea why the auto downloads won't work?
    Thanks.

OK, I figured it out. With the auto download hung up, I hit the cancel button, and then it let me do a manual download that worked just fine.

  • How can you tell if apps have auto updated?

When turning on Auto Update of apps in iOS 7, will iOS tell you if it has actually done an auto update? If so, how will it do this? Notification Center?

    Go to App Store>Update
