Annotations Saved My Life

OK, I'm exaggerating a bit, but I hate filling in forms by hand - and I hate the fact that I can never use Adobe Reader's commenting tools because the file's originator always bans commenting.  So it was great that I could use 'Annotations' in Preview to fill-in my mortgage form.
Sorry if I'm sounding like a fan-boy, but thanks Apple.

  • Siri Saved My Life In A Medical Emergency

    I just wanted to let the people at Apple know that Siri is not only smart and witty, this morning, when I began having severe chest pains, Siri saved my life. The chest pains got so severe that I fell down in my kitchen and was unable to move. Being that my home phone was on my desk in my office, and my Apple iPhone 5c was plugged into the wall charger twenty feet away from where I fell, I realized that I would have a difficult time calling for help. But, I remembered that in my iPhone settings, I have the feature enabled where Siri is always listening when my iPhone 5c is plugged into the charger. So, I did the only thing I could: "Hey Siri, call 911". Siri placed the call for help that I would have been unable to place for myself had she not been part of my life. I'm just getting home from the hospital, and as it turns out, I was not having a heart attack; I was actually having a severe anxiety attack, which produces symptoms so similar to those of a heart attack. Even the paramedics who came to my home to assist me thought I was having a genuine heart attack. I know Steve Jobs would be smiling ear to ear if he were here to learn about how Siri helped me in a medical emergency. Many people complain that iPhones have too many "bells and whistles", but I beg to differ. I have always bragged to my friends who have non-iOS devices about the quality of Apple products in general as well as the innovative features that are included with them. Thank you Siri for coming to my rescue.

    There is no technical reason FiOS Internet/Television cannot co-exist with wireline telephone service. I had both Wireline Telephone Service, and FiOS Internet/Television for several years, dropping the wireline service in favor of Vonage earlier this year. At the time I had my FiOS installation I asked about converting the wireline service to FiOS without Digital-Voice, and Verizon declined, so my  telephone service remained over the copper pair.
    FiOS telephone service involves provisioning the ONT, and running the telephone wires from the ONT to the Network Interface Box  or connection block (If you service is very old, you don't have a Network Interface Box.). If they don't run the wire and provision your ONT, your telephone service remains wireline.
    Verizon does offer Internet/Television service as a bundle, but you can get just Internet service if that is all you want.

  • Quad Core MBP saving battery life by only using two cores

    I am trying to use my MBP 8,2 with two of my four cores shut down in order to preserve battery life. Is this at all possible through 3rd party apps?

    This whole thread reminds me of some of the nutty ideas American carmakers came up with during one of the first gasoline shocks back in the 70's. Don't remember whether it was Chrysler or GM, hellbent on keeping their huge gas guzzler engines, came up with the idea of disabling one or more cylinders when "not needed". A totally Rube Goldberg-ian contraption ensued, more prone to failure than any potential gas it may have saved.
    And while on topic and following Señor Grant's lead, last Wedneday decided to take my MBP to the edge. 8% battery charge remaining, that is. That took the whole of 7:15, while running at 50% backlight, WiFi, MS Word and two browsers going (all four cores, too). Then on Thursday 10.7.4 + Safari 5.1.7 came out. So, back to the drawing board on Friday. 7:20 and 6% remaining, got tired of waiting and all this mine is bigger than yours BS and plugged it back in...

  • How the iPhone Saved My Life

    Well, maybe not my life, but it did save me a lot of pain and agony...
    We met the in-laws in the mountains this past weekend about four hours west of where we live. While traveling on the interstate on the way back home, we noticed that traffic was backed up ahead of us. I took the exit and parked in a Wendy's. Pulled out my iPhone, checked the DOT's traffic info site on the web, and read that the interstate was closed ten miles ahead due to a semi overturning. By going directly to the website, I was able to find out which exit number the accident occurred. The interstate was going to be blocked for the next six to eight hours, so I opened the mapping app on the iPhone and found a route that would take us one exit past the accident.
    I saved myself countless hours of sitting in a car in the broiling heat with two whining kids in the back.
    Since 3G coverage is very limited nationwide, I can now see why Apple and AT&T went with Edge until 3G is further developed. Considering how far out in the sticks we were, 3G wouldn't have done me any good. With Edge, I was able to get online to check traffic and then find an alternate route with the mapping app. The web page loads only took about ten seconds and the mapping was almost instant.

    Good story but FYI, having 3G access and a 3G phone does not prevent or eliminate EDGE access. AT&T has not eliminated EDGE access in their markets where they have 3G access available since all subscribers do not have a 3G phone but it is coming which won't exclude existing iPhone owners.

  • Time Machine saved my life!

    I just wanted to share this bit of information and the importance of backing up your computer. Out of the blue today my MacBook's hard drive crashed. I have been using TM and was concerned, but not too much. I went down to the store today, bought a new hard drive. Installed it and used time machine to recover everything. In one hour, my MacBook was back in working order with my new hard drive. No problems and everything works as advertised. If you're not using Time Machine to backup your computer, don't wait. Get and external hard drive or Time Capsule and back it up.

    I really wasn't all that diligent in attaching my external drive and doing backups on my MacBook when I first got it a little over a year ago. But when the Time Capsule was released I purchased it and have been doing backups ever since. I purchased the new MacBook about a month ago now and when I first booted up it asked if I wanted to restore from a Time Machine backup and so I used that option and it set everything up just like my prior MacBook. It took quite a while because I had a lot of information on it but it worked flawlessly.
    I have had one experience that saved my butt with an assignment in a class I was taking where I accidentally overwrote an important file. I panicked at first but then remembered Time Machine and accessed the most recent backup, restored, and I was all set. I found it funny afterwards how quickly I panicked because Time Machine is just working in the background without having to really worry about anything.

  • Java Saved My Life

    I went to the doctor today, and he told me I had only weeks to live. I asked if there was anything I could do about this and he thought the only thing that could save me was to learn Java. I didn't believe him at first, but after a few weeks of using objects and the interfaces, and I have regained my health and the doctor no longer thinks my life is in serious danger. I think the only reason for this is my good knowledge of Java. I think I owe so much to Sun Microsystems and its truly masterpiece-like language, that has given me the way out from certain death.
    Actually I want to know the best way to output HTML from a Java program.

    Innovative attention grabbing intro :)
    The simplest way is to write JavaScript directly to the HTML, so you can output HTML source like:
    <script language="Javascript">
    document.write("<b>Output</b>");
    </script>
    Ofcourse you can count, sum, concatenate and so on in document write without a problem.
    The second solution, that I'm also interested in, is a java applet, that would upon call output some HTML code. I've been begging for a simple example for a while, but I didn't get any replys that would indicate that something like this is possible. Drop me a note if you find a solution.
    Regards, Lovro

  • Verizon literally saved my life.

    On a cold January day in 2008, I was on my way to work  from KY. to IL. and running late due to icy roads. To access my job site, I had to drive down a stretch called 3 mile road as it is 3 miles from the main highway to the job site. Just about half a mile from the job which is located in a National Forest area, may small truck hit a patch of black ice causing me to lose control of the vehicle and after a quick but violent fight with the wheel, my truck ran down a small ravine and slammed into a tree instantly breaking my neck and paralyzing me with a severe spinal cord injury. Upon making impact with the tree on the passenger side, my body was thrown from the drivers seat, through the long gear shift of my truck causing it to break, and finally into the passenger side seat. The momentum of the impact caused my head to shatter the passenger side window. I assume that is when my neck snapped. As I am a former Marine, and have had several job related courses in first aid and trauma situations, I immediately began assessing my situation. I did not attempt to move my head, I could move both arms, I checked for bleeding, a little but not gushing, I checked my chest, no feeling, my stomach, nothing, my legs, no feeling, try to move the feet, no response. The story gets fuzzy from here. It was below 30 because there was snow and ice and around 8:15 in the morning. As I was running late, all traffic from the night shift was already gone, I was the last one in for the day shift and no more cars would pass until at least 3:00. Wow, I remained conscious and calm and wondered if I would freeze to death or go into shock and die first. Suddenly I thought, try your phone. I knew this would be futile because even though Verizon where the only phones that got service in the forest, I was not yet on top of the hill, I was in a valley, no way was I going to get a signal. What else did I have to do? Luckily, I had left my Verizon LG flip in my vest pocket, which I never do.
     Otherwise it would have been on the seat and thrown out of reach upon impact. I automatically dialed my wife and without much thought said," Honey, I slid into a ditch, I am ok, call and tell them that I will be late."  I do not know why is all I can tell you. I hung up and called my Supervisor and said,"Rod, I am down 3 mile road somewhere, I am pretty messed up." I do not know how long I spoke to him and I do not remember being in a great deal of pain. Perhaps the cold helped. He said that he was coming to find me. I ended the call, closed it and threw the phone out of the window, there was nobody else that I cared to speak to at the moment. I lit a smoke and hit twice, out the window. I do not remember anything that occurred for roughly the next 3 to 4 weeks. Transport, trauma care, halos, visits, all a blank. Three years later and disabled, but alive, I do know that there is no way, any other phone would have allowed me to make those two calls because anytime a coworker needed to make a personal call, they used my Verizon.  This is my," more bars in more places" story. "Can you hear me now?"  Thank you.

  • DiskWarrior has saved my life

    Praise be to the mighty DW. Yeah, I know it's a tad off-topic, but I just wanted to share the warm feeling I get every time that I realize that I haven't lost five years worth of work after all :o)

    I use a utility to synchronize my files to an external hard drive so I have a backup. Last week, I had accidentally synchronized in the wrong direction and overwrote my whole Documents folder with a two-month old Documents folder. I almost had a heart attack when I realized what I had done. I put a LOT of time into several music projects. There is no way I could do it again. I have no other backup.
    Luckily, I had recently moved my music projects into the Music directory which isn't under Documents. My music projects were still intact! I only lost some minor items in my Documents folder. All I can say is "Whew!"

  • Time Machine don't mock it, it just saved my life

    Hi chaps, i have been very dudious about the worth of Time Machine, but i have been regularly backing up onto TWO seperate drives, one of them a 3TB Western Digital NAS My Book Live and a Western Digital 1TB USB My Passport.
    I was messing about with an APP i should have left alone, however i messed about deleting files to save space, it soon turned out that i had completely knackered my Installation of LION  !!, i had to recover the situation using my Time Machine Backups !, i hooked up the faster of the two drives first the My Book Live, before i could restore anything i had to enter a password, which in itself was pretty extaordinary in itself, because i hadnt given the dammed thing a PASSWORD in the first place, so i didnt know what it was and i wasnt laughing either.
    So happily i was able to use the little USB drive, which although pretty slow, it DID do the restore perfectly, over-night mind you, i think it took quite a few hours though  !!!!.
    So take my advice, Back up with Time Machine REGULARLY  preferably onto two seperate external drives !!!!!
    tim

    I must admit i did a better job than that, i couldnt have got away with a quick cure like that ...  I realised something had gone wrong when my Dock Icons (and all other icons) simply bounced when clicked and nothing happened !!!.
    I didnt loose much i am happy to say, i found that all my emails that werent backed up, which were still in my web mail inbox ALL got nicely downloaded again.
    However captfred I didnt try and click on the TM icon at the top of the screen like you suggest, but if i had, i wouldnt have know what to restore  !!!  LOL.
    thanks

  • How do I save annotations. Even if I close out of the document or email it to myself I don't seethem

    How do I save annotations? Even if I close out of the document or email it to myself I don't see the annotations in the document I email to myself. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Are you editing a local document or a Acrobat.com document?
    If you are using Preview to open the document that you emailed to yourself, you will not see the added annotations. This is a limitation in Preview.
    If you open the same pdf in Adobe Reader app, you would see the added annotations saved in the pdf file.
    Please do let us know if this helps.
    Thanks,
    Rishi
