Another printing problem

search keywords: hp, cups, foomatic, hpijs
Alright, this is extremely agonizing. I had this printer working with an earlier version of (cups, hpijs?), I switched to another model for a while, now I switched back and it doesn't work. HP2210 all-in-one.
The behavior is extremely strange. _without_ foomatic installed, I run thru the standard cups installation, it shows up, etc. But it won't print anything. It just queues forever and says idle, accepting jobs. If i install foomatic, the printer disappears (on the part where it asks me to pick the port/location). This is driving me to my wits end, what do I need to do?

iBertus wrote:Do you have ghostscript and gimp-print installed? Also, my printer 1210 all-in-one doesn't show up in the list of ports but works once configured for the first USB port in cups.
ghostscript and gimp-print are both up to date.
now I got foomatic installed, the printer still shows up, but it won't print  :?:

  • YAPP (Yet Another Printing Problem)

I've found another printing problem - this time with colour printing.
    To my
surprise, Forte (3.0.E.0) can print in colour (at least on a HP 690C,
    using
NT drivers for the 660C, the printer being connected to a Win95
    machine).
I can print OK with from my NT develpoment machine in colour, but when
    running
the same app from the Win95 client with the printer attached locally the
coloured text disappears. Has anyone else come across this problem?
Is this another of the 'Printing works fine as long as it happens
    non-locally?'
    features?

I wonder if this is related to the printing feature I discovered

the same colours as my windows desktop, which is
    typically yellow-on-black.

  • Yet another printing problem 'EOF' errors

This problem is probably both a Leopard and Adobe problem combined. It's a rather complicated problem, but the bottom line is that (to most printers) the jobs coming out of one of our Mac Pros cause the printers to crash and restart themselves giving an 'EOF Error (End of File)' on at least one of them. The problem also appears to affect PDF documents created in InDesign which will then cause the same errors on any computer it is printed from.
Things you may need to know and that I've already tried:
    • The same printers with the same drivers printing the same files will work on other Mac Pros of the same version with the same version of Leopard.
    • Using a generic driver will print properly, however this is not a workaround because we need duplexing provided by the driver and I'm not sure how this could fix the PDF problem.
    • Fonts have been disabled and checked with Font Doctor.
    • Starting up in 'Safe Mode' will allow printing, but without fonts or links on server volumes.
    • Switching the hard drive with another identical Mac Pro brought the problem with the HD, worked on other. In other words, the problem is definitely in the software and not a hardware problem.
    • Reset the printing system numerous times.
    • Re-installed the OS, Adobe CS3, and a couple of documents - same problem with no added extensions. Other computer with tons of extensions and fonts, etc. - no problem.
    • Plain text documents print fine.
    • Some PostScript documents will print, but rarely.
    • Will not print to HP LaserJet 2420, Minolta Di650 Fiery, ABDick Platemaker.
    • WIll print to Kodak DigiMaster (three different models and versions)
Everything that I think sounds like it could be the problem is disproved by the fact that several other Mac Pros with the exact same configuration have no problem. I'm thinking about cloning another Mac Pro system that works and seeing if I can go about it that way.
Apple support was no help. Nor was Adobe. They tried to be helpful, but there is no logic to solving this one. This has been going on for over a week now and I've tried so many things. It's driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It was actually just a commonly used font that had gone bad somehow. Problems like that are always fonts or links. Sometimes they just aren't as obvious. We thought we'd checked everything and it affected so many of her files because she used the font so often.

Sounds like your print windows are inheriting their color from the desktop. You can
change this in the window workshop on the color palette. The "i" in the palette
means the window inherits it color from the desktop.

  • Another Print problem

Installed the 64 bit version of the beta LR4. Imported some gkids school pictures. Did some development module work on each one. Opened the print module and used a "user defined" templete from 3.6 that beta 4 had already imported. This is a simple 3 x 3  setup on letter paper. Selected print and changed from my default B/W laser printer to my wireless Color injet, updated the preferences for
"how to print" and said OK. No joy,
Program went grey and closed. After two days I finally found how to clear that print queue. It had shut down some Win 7 services and I had NO printers for awhile. "PrintIsolationHost" was the last service that wouldn't work. Ran the Win7 app "Fix-it" (worked great) and fixed the print queue and the lack of certain services.
I am just reporting the problem and don't expect any solution until the next update.

Using the OS X built-in network protocols (IP printing, Windows Printing) requires CUPS drivers. Unfortunately, nearly all non-postscript printer manuafacturers provide Carbon drivers, not CUPS drivers, and with Carbon drivers they can intentionally limit what comm protocol will work. So, your Canon came with a USB-only driver. The only CUPS driver I know of for your model is from www.printfab.net. But you should check Gutenprint regularly because they frequently add newer models:
    http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
Once you have a driver, be sure to read the print server manual to understand which protocols are supported, and if using LPD or IPP, what the queue name (port name) is.

  • HELP!! Another Printer Problem!

    HELP!
I'm trying to print and it states that its NOT connected...
I tried upgrading the driver... SAME THING...
I go to Airport Utility... ITS CONNECTED. WTH?!
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Mahalo!

It looks as if the printer driver can't handle the printer being shared via AirPort and expects the printer to be directly connected to your computer.

  • Another Printing Problem with iPhoto

    iMac, 800 MHz, PowerPC G4
    OS X 10.4.11
    HP Printer
I purchased the 08 iLife and iPhoto worked really well. I installed the update to 7.1.1 and this was the first I have tried to print since that update. Clicking on the print icon (between Email and Order Prints) does nothing at all. Going to the menu bar and dropping down to Print gives +“No Available Themes. There are no themes located. Until at least one theme has been installed, this feature will be unavailable.”+ The themes do show up in the Library/ApplicationSupport/iPhoto folder.
    1. Disk Utility has been run several time and permissions repaired only on the first time.
    2. iPhoto (com.apple.iPhoto.plist) file deleted several times with no change.
    3. iPhoto rebuilt (started program with Option and Command keys held down) with no change.
    4. #1 and #2 repeated with no change.
I tried to reinstall iPhoto from the original disc, but since it was a prior version it would not overwrite the 7.1.1.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Hawk

Well it looks like things took a turn for the worse. I deleted everything but my iPhoto library and put in my iLife 08 disc. It found that it needed to install iPhoto (looks good). When the install finished I double clicked on the icon and up comes iPhoto with the message that "photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto (still looking good). When I click on the upgrade button I get the message, "Your photo library is damaged and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup" (not looking good). I tried to use the backup, but got the same message. I have since repaired permissions a couple of times (nothing found either time) and done a couple of restarts. As of right now I have a couple of thousand pictures that I can not only not print, but I can't access. Still need some suggestions.

  • Another printer problem

Just bought a Canon PIXMA MG3120.  I can connect it to my home internet wireless fine.  I can not set it up on the MiFi though.  Any ideas on how to do it.  I understand from Canon all I have to do is go through the set up again, but it never finds the networkMiFi.

Chances are that your Printer is only compatible with B/G signals.  Try lowering your MiFi so that it can communicate in a technology that your printer understands.
    Change the 802.11/Wireless Mode
    Sign into your MiFi
    Click the Wi-Fi tab
Change the 802.11 mode from B+G+N to B+G
    Click Apply
    Test your connection

  • Goods Receipt Note - printing problems

    Hi there
I have a couple of issues regarding printing problems for Goods Receipt Notes.
    The 1st problem
Only the first line item is printed on the GRN, all the other line items are omitted from the GRN.
    The 2 nd problem
When doing a Non-stock item GRN it does not print at all.
    The 3 rd problem
Our stock count sheet only print 300 line items at a time and it is also not in sequence.
Another printing problem is with our picking list
Here what happens is that instead of the picking list skipping the "perforate section" at the end of each page, it just continious printing one stroke through without any intervals.
Then the last issue but with printing of Reservations, is that even though we have zero stock on hand, the reservations are still being printed. This causes a problem not only waisting paper, but we have to go through those lists to identify the actual reservations that can be issued.
    Please can anybody help?

Without your printer model numbers, readers can only give you vague general directions.
    System Preferences > Print&Fax > ...
... shows a list of all set-up printers.
If you are having serious problems, it makes sense to "Reset the Printing System" (which also removes all printer set-ups) and add back each printer. It only takes a few minutes.

  • Printing problem: "fit to page" option does not work, even from cmd

    hello!
i am switching a company over to linux, that's why i am trying to make it shine as much as possible!
unfortunately i have to explain why something as simple as printing an email to one page instead of 1 and half isn't working...
no matter what i always get the same layout ... through
    a) print menues which give me the option to scale to page e.g. firefox's print menue or
    b) command line with the option found in (http://localhost:631/help/options.html#FIT_TO_PAGE)
    lp -o fit-to-page filename
    lpr -o fit-to-page filename
they both do not result in a scaled to one page output, instead i get the same result a print without any extra configuration gives me (2 pages).
i don't know where to report this problem!?
since i don't know whether it is an arch, Canon, CUPS or postscript problem ...
    my setup is:
    manjaro/arch linux (latest packages)
    CUPS 1.7.1
canon imagerunner irc2880 - printer language = postscript
    gnome 3.10
(i use the canon "cque" aur package to get the only working ppd for this printer (cel-irc2880-ps-de.ppd) [working = print both b/w & color] ... ps stands for postscript.
pls help or direct me to the right channels

  • My "fix" to print problems in LR (using MS XP)

Having had the same problems printing from LR as many others are complaining about, I thought that I might give my 2 cents to what I did to solve (?) the problem. I have to run with current setting in a while to be convinced that it is not just an intermittent fix though ;-)
My problem when printing from LR was that the print came out much too Cyan-Green and somewhat dark when color management where handled by LR. When the same photo was exported to PS Elements (PSE) in Tiff with the Pro-photo color profile embedded, adjustments from LR, and printed using the same driver setting and color management, the print came out fine.
I must mention that I have had fine printout in previous LR versions but I'm not sure when the problem started. But at least from LR version 1.3, 1.3.1 I have had problems printing a proper print.
As I'm not 100% sure what caused the fix, I don't want to leave much info un-documented, so I start by describing my system etc.:
    - Athlon 64 3500+ with 2 GB RAM
    - Lacie 119 LCD monitor (calibrated with a ColorVision Spyder 2)
    - Epson Stylus Photo 890 printer; an old (6-7 years) 6 color dye-sub printer, but it can still produce very good prints. (It is BTW, the A4 printer version of Epson 1290).
    - Microsoft XP service pack 2
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.3.1.
    - Adobe Photoshop Elements 5
    - Latest Epson 890 printer drivers ver. 5.21/P (from 2004)
    - ICC profiles for various Epson printer paper
    - Paper used: Ilford Printasia Photo Glossy Paper (but I have tried Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper as well with same results)
    I used following setting:
    - In printer driver: "No color management" was selected
    - LR and PSE color management; printer profile: Epson Stylus Photo 890 Premium Glossy Photo Paper, Rendering Intent: Perceptual
    . LR Print sharpening: High
    - LR Print resolution: 360ppi
When the photo was opened in PSE and I had printed a small print with above mentioned printer driver/color management settings. The print looked good, but with a little magenta color cast, so I thought that if I used a different printer profile this might help (I have no ICC profile for the Ilford paper). So I chose the "Epson Stylus Photo 890 Photo Paper" instead and printed again, and this time the photo looked as it did on my calibrated monitor. I have to admit I was a bit delighted even though it was from printed from PSE and not from LR, but seeing that color management worked in other applications was a relief.
In PSE, I also I tried changing to a different Rendering Intent before changing printer profile, but with no success.
Another thing that helped further was to change Media Type in printer driver from "Premium Glossy Photo Paper" to "Photo Paper".
After the print success in PSE I went back to LR and changed the Printer Profile to "Epson Stylus Photo 890 Photo Paper" (still with "No color management" and "Photo Paper" selected in printer driver) and printed the photo again. Now the photo looked as good as it did in PSE (!!!???).
Now I have made a few printer preset in LR for various print sizes, and the prints look fantastic. Every time! Do I have to mention that I am a happy guy ? :-)
BTW, remember that a printer preset also saves the printer driver settings. Forgetting this can easily cause some unexpected results.
The only thing is that, I still do not know what fixed the problem, and I am a bit worried that the problem might come back again. Maybe the print related changes made in PSE and the following selection of the same settings in LR did - somehow - "synchronize" LR to a proper color management. Sounds weird, but if it works...
I hope this long explanation was useful to - at least - some of you, who experience printer problems in LR. LR is a fantastic application, and I enjoy using it, but the printer problems has really been frustrating.
    Good luck!
    /Per

Little unclear about the border thing- you say it prints with a too wide border, but also say:
When I print the image with this set up, it still is printed without a border.
It's a factor of your printer, though; some can never print without a margin around all sides; this can be a border, or cut off. Good news, though; you can have a 5 x 7 borderless, or with any size border you wish if you print on larger paper, and trim to taste.

  • Leopard printing problems on several printers (Am I the only one?)

Since installing Leopard shortly after it was released, I've had flakiness with printing:
    - With Tiger, when I printed, I could open the printer's window, and see the print job queued. The job would finish, disappear from the window, and everything would be fine.
    - When the job was printing, the printer icon would appear in the Dock. When the job was done, the icon would disappear from the Dock. Simple.
With Leopard, printing has worked, but I have never seen a print job appear in a PrinterProxy window. I print, the printer outputs the job, and PrinterProxy is always blank. The printer icon appears in the Dock, and stays there forever. I found that I could ctrl-click on the icon and select the Auto Quit option (Hooray!), but that only worked for a while. Then the icons started staying in the Dock again. When I click on the Dock, there is no more Auto Quit option... just the "Application Not Responding" message. I have to force quit Printer Proxy after every time I print.
What's stranger is how long it takes for the PrinterProxy app to start up. The icon in the Dock bounces for well over a minute. Sometimes, the job finishes printing before the app is launched. If I switch between apps using Cmd-Tab, I can select the PrinterProxy app, but it never actually displays; instead, I just revert to the current window.
This is true for every printer I use, and as a traveling consultant, I use several. It is true whether I am printing via Airport, or over a direct Internet or USB connection.
The printers that are permanently in my Printer List are:
    Canon i9100
    Brother MFC-8840
    Epson Stylus Photo 220
    HP LaserJet 1320N
    HP LaserJet 8800
    HP LaserJet 6570
    HP Color LaserJet 5550
    Adobe PDF 8.0
All of these have the same problems. What's worse is, when I have a printing problem, there is no way to diagnose it, since the print jobs never show up in the PrinterProxy.
I have reset my printing system many times. I have deleted and re-added my printers many times. I have downloaded drivers from the manufacturer's sites, and reinstalled Leopard's default drivers. Nothing makes a difference. Strangely, after updating to 10.5.2, the Auto Quit problem went away for awhile, then returned spontaneously.
At the thread below, I show some of my system and crash logs from a prior discussion. Someone was helping me with the problem, but after asking me to post my logs, he seems to have dropped off the thread.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7013209#7013209
I can't believe this problem is endemic to Leopard. I know many people who seem to use Leopard without any problems at all. (They even print once in a while!) And yet, as a fairly advanced user, I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem! My system is pretty plain vanilla, with no weird mods, hacks or apps. Pretty much just straightforward creative and productivity apps. I use it daily for business, so I try to keep all wacky stuff off of it.
There must be a solution, short of doing a clean install. Can anyone help? Are there PrinterProxy-related files I can delete when I reset the Printer System that might help resolve this? Prefs?
    Thanks,
    David

I'm having exactly the same problem with a Lexmark C760.
When I inspect the Activity Monitor while opening the Printer Icon from the Dock (or press the Button "Open Print Queue" in the "Print & Fax" System Preferences), I can see the Printer Icon as "Printer Proxy (Not Responding)" marked in red in the processes list. The Dock icon bounces for quite a while, and after about 2 minutes, a Printer List actually appears under the PrinterProxy application and the process in Activity Monitor changes its name to "(null)" and its color to black.
Though there is no entry in the PrinterProxy list when I print something from another application while keeping the window open, I can select "Supply Levels" and the correct information appears, so it seems to be functional.
It also seems that there are several copies of the drivers remaining, as the application in the Dock is named "Lexmark C760 (4)", probably from my attempts to remove and reinstall the driver. Is there some interference with old installations of the drivers that still lurk somewhere, hidden in the depth of the many libraries? How can I get rid of the previously installed drivers for good?

  • Network Printing Problem (cgpdftops)

I'm attempting to print to a networked HP color laserjet 2550 and I'm getting a strange error message in the print status dialog box on every print:
The process "cgpdftops" terminated unexpectedly on signal 10
When this message appears, only the first page of the job is printed. Any idea what signal 10 is as my attempts to find out the meaning have failed.

I added the printer through the IP tab of the add printer dialog box, using the IP of the server as the address and selecting HP Jetdirect-Socket. I accepted the default "Generic PostScript Printer" driver option. I sent a print job, but it hung on an "Network host 'balder.bme.unc.edu' is busy;" error message. I removed and added the printer and added it again, this time selecting the proper driver, but received the same error message.
Issues with this might be related to the fact that there are two printers shared through the server.
I'm also leaning towards this being a printer driver problem, given that I was able to print to another printer (an HP 3500) using the "hp color LaserJet 2.0.1" driver. This driver was automatically selected for the 3500, but I can't seem to find the 2.0.1 driver in the list when attempting to add the HP 2550.
If I add the HP 2550 using the generic PostScript driver, the printer works as expected, all pages print from documents, but the cgpdftops error still appears in the printer queue dialog box.

  • HP Laserjet 4P Printing Problems

I am using a Mac G4 with 10.4.7 and printing on a HP Laser Jet 4P using driver HP Laser Jet 4 Series Gimp.
When I first print a page or 20 pages of the job, all works fine. Once I go to print another job, I get the msg "GIMP Printing Page 1, 15% and the printer will not print no matter how long I wait. The only solution is to turn the printer off, re boot the Mac and then it will print one job. To print another job, without a failure, I must turn off the printer again and re boot the Mac. This is really a problem, especially when printing UPS Shipping Labels. Any idea how to correct this problem ?
I do not have the problem with a Epson Printer with standard Mac Drivers. But The HP Laser is so much cheaper to do volume printing, I prefer to use the Laser Jet 4P.
    Thank You for your help
    Paul

Here is the latest update on the HP LaserJet 4P printing problem.
    1. I went to Library>Printers and dragged the Icon (HP Laserjet 4p.app) to the dock. Printer still will not print.
    2. Reloaded the driver HP Laser Jet 4Plus v2013.111
Printer will not print. Error mag on printer is (W2-Invalid Pers)
    3. Reloaded the driver HP Laser Jet 4 series Gimp Print V5.0.0 Beta.
Printer will print one Job (1 page or 20 pages). Send another job and it will not print.
    4. Downloaded the HP Driver for Laser Jet as was instructed in an earlier post
( HPlaserjet v552.dmg) I double click on the .DMG file and it brings up a Icon of a Disk Drive on the desktop HE LaserJet V5.5.2.051. Double click on that icon and a window opens with the same information. There is no place to click to install this driver.
I do not believe the HP Laser Jet 4P has a problem as I can hook it to a PC and it will print one job after the other, never a problem.
How do I get the driver mentioned in #4 to appear in the HP Print drivers list in the printer setup utility so I can select it.
The Parallel to USB converter I am using was the one recommended earlier this year as the one used by a few here on the forum to run their HP Laser Jet 4P.
I could forget the HP Laser Jet and go with my Epson printer. However with amount of business printing and UPS Labels the ink cartridges is very costly. The Laser Jet will run for almost 2 years on a Cartridge. Others have made the Laser 4P work on a Mac. Please scan through my first post and replies to get a flavor of the problem.
Thanks for your continued support. Needless to say, I am lost in this problem.
