Another real weird 10.6 event

A couple of days after installing 10.6 and then 10.6.1 I wanted to install some additional items off the 10.6 DVD. When I inserted the disk and clicked on the "Install Mac OS x.app" icon this message came up:
"Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer. This disk requires that Mac OS X 10.5 or later already be installed on your computer"
The irony is that 10.6.1 IS installed on my computer, see screen shot at:

Does any one know what could be going on?

I believe you have to have Leopard installed first to do this. that's how it worked in the past at any rate. of course, that's extremely inconvenient. with leopard drop-in DVDs there were a number of simple workarounds available like this one

don't know if any of this works in snow leopard. btw, have you tried it when booted directly from the snow leopard DVD? insert the DVD, restart and hold "c" at the chime. you'll be booted into snow leopard installer. see if it gives you the same trouble when you try to install it over the current snow leopard system.

Basically, if your client does not have a Mac then don't use iWeb to create the site. iWeb is Mac only and if a client wishes to make alterations, then they need the domain file.
If your client needs to update on a weekly basis, then why not consider using one of the online website creation packages where you can log in from any Mac or PC. This would be simpler and there are lots out there - Microsoft Office Live or Google or something like http://www.wix.com where you can create a site and use a domain name with it.
Look at the alternatives before using iWeb.

Hi,
okay...for Operations like max, min, avg, etc. you must use an Aggregation in a Mapping.
Delete Operations you must handle in the Table Characteristics.
(Right Click on top of a Table --> Context Menu --> choose delete).
To come to your Target you must made several Steps in the Mapping and lead the Data through the Conditions.

Weird order of events added to iCal using Applescript

This is a script that has worked perfectly in the past and as far as I know has not been modified (my bad if so...) Currently it is adding all the correct events into iCal but taking a real long time to do it and this is probably due to the weird chronology it takes to putting the events in. I will include the script at the bottom of this post and here is a section of the event log that shows the weird chronology... Thanks in advance for the help.

Did it run faster in the past?
The events are happening as your script is generating them - for example, you get the event summary to compare in an if statement, then get it again when you assign it to a variable. The Script Editor's *Event Log* is handy in this case to see when you are creating a lot of extraneous or duplicate events.
Also, when using application tell statements, you should only target the application's terminology, since it will just pass back what it doesn't know how to do - in other words, try not to put anything in the statement except what you need from the application.
I don't have your iCal calendar events to play with, but a couple of tweaks to your code should improve the performance:

Using Links to another web page that triggers event

I was wondering if you are able to have a link (anchor) to another web page that will trigger an event.
I have a test site www.psweb-test.com and on the home page there is a list of case studies. On another page I have a Jquery accordion menu on www.psweb-test.com/case.html.
What I want is for the user to select a link of the appropriate case study from the homepage, this to take you to the www.psweb-test.com/case.html page showing the appropriate section from the Jquery accordion section.
Is this possible as I think the homepage link will need to trigger the appropriate event ?

It should be possible to carry the desired slice of the accordion to open to the target page in a URL variable. Had you used a Spry Accordion, or a PVII accordion, I could have told you how to do this. I've not used the jQuery ones, though.

Iphoto 11, 9.1.3, acting weird and shows events empty while working on them...

While I'm working on photos in any given events i often toggle between info view and edit view. also open and close images randomly using spacebar. sometimes, the photo will simply disappear when toggling from info to edit and then when minimizing it and going back to event view… the event is shown as empty!
this is happening randomly at different times with different events. i've already rebuilt the library using iPhoto library manager and this is happening with the new library as well.
also, as i mentioned in another thread, its not loading my videos to iPhone 4 even when 'include videos' is checked in itunes.

Thank you. I have been waiting for someone else to report this issue for a couple weeks. I had this start happening in 9.1.2 and submitted feedback and posted on forums, but no one seemed to experience the same issue. This only happens on one of my Macs. A late 09 iMac. I rebuilt and vacuumed the hard drive. Deleted preferences and repaired permissions. Started a brand new library. Nothing solved it. Finally I completely deleted every file associated with iPhoto 11 and reinstalled it, then manually rebuilt my library. Yet the issue persists.
I really hope Apple fixes this in the next update. It is annoying because I use iPhoto at work and often need to show people photos, then iPhoto does this and I start to look like an idiot as I exit and re-enter the event, trying to force the photos to reappear.

Another way to look at Events and albums (smart and dumb)

Maybe this will help others, but I had an epiphany regarding iPhoto 08 and the organizational method (or lack there of) in regards to Events and albums, etc.
Here it goes: iPhoto is now iTunes for pictures. I know it has been said before, but this time it truly is.
When you import a CD with iTunes, it creates a directory of songs in your library. When you import a group of pictures in iPhoto, it similarly imports them as an event. Events = CD's, plain and simple.
Think of searching for photos the same way you would search for songs. By typing in the artist, the album the specific title - etc you can easily find a song. With events, all the pictures are linked to the title of the event, so searching is very easy and fast.
Gone are the days of complicated hierarchy systems in Winamp or iPhoto 06. If you want a photo, you type the name of the event - or a keyword tagged into the photo.
But say you want some albums of specific songs, or in this case, photos. You can create albums or smart albums to accomplish this for quick access. Or maybe a Christmas album that automatically updates with every christmas photo entered and tagged.
I am an Aperture user and all my folders are setup like this:
Vacations --> Beach --> Florida --> 2007
If I switched to iPhoto, they will be created in a simple event, for example:
Florida Beach Vacation 2007
Now every picture within that event name would be searchable by typing in florida, beach etc. Even deeper, by tagging individual photos by the person's name or any other photo-specific info, these pics would even be more searchable.
Anyway, I hope this helps some people grasp the new concepts of organization in iPhoto 08. Surely it can be done several different ways, but I think this may be the best way to do it.

Albums = playlists
I see people here asking why a photo can't be in an album and in No event; perhaps the iTunes analogy would be helpful to them. If you don't have the song in your library (because you don't have that CD) then you can't put it in a playlist. (Nevermind that you can download single songs now - it doesn't fit the analogy. Remember when you had to buy the hard copy.)

Another Javascript issue (CheckBox onClick event)

I am using NWDS04s Adobe Designer 7.1.
I created a IF with a TextField on it and a CheckBox. What i would like to do is, when the checkbox is checked, the TextField should disappear (TextField1.Presence = "hidden").
I wrote this script in the OnClick event of the Checkbox:

When i deploy my WD you could guess, it's not working ;-((
Is there something i am doing wrong??
When i place this code in the Initialize event of the CheckBox and change the If statement to CheckBox1.rawValue == "0" it works as expected.

Real weird problem with Imac display

I have a 2 week old Imac 24 inch model, been using PCs for 20+ years, new to Macs, loved it for 2 weeks then had this problem:
Something wrong with either the video display card or one of my kids has got it in a weird mode. This mode is described as:
1. Any button that one would normally click on (like an "ok" button in any application) has a blue bar in the button that continually "grows" and then 'shrinks' meaning that the size of the blue line in the button changes size within the button, oscillating bigger and smaller. Does this on all applications that have some button.
2. Open Safari, try to highlight the URL line (address line or whatever it's called). You don't see the line get highlighted like it should.
3. Click on the Finder button at the top left of the screen, then move the mouse over each menu, some of the text items are MISSING from each of the pulldown menus. What's really strange is that when you keep the menu pulled-down, then move the mouse down into the desktop area, the previously missing menu text reappears for about 0.5sec then the menu closes. You'd expect the menu to close but not for the menu text to appear for the 0.5 second duration, obviously it should be there each time the menu is pulled down.
4. When in any application the vertical part of any letter, like the vertical part of the letter 'i' in the word island would be red with the remaining part of the letter 'i' being black.
When the Imac boots, the flat panel display graphics look great, I briefly see the picture of me and some other font that looks great, but once the desktop loads you have all the problems mentioned above.
So, I tried setting different screen resolutions but to no avail. What else should I try changing ? Do I have a bad video card ?

Go to System Preferences/Universal Access/Seeing and check under Display that the contrast is set to Normal. If that's not the culprit, try creating a new user account and see if the problem occurs in that account as well, and post back your results.

Finder acting real weird, afraid to reboot

I'm not sure when and how this actually happened. I am thinking I noticed it right after making a sparse.image backup of my Macbook Pro. Mysteriously, when I navigate to my harddrive, and into the Users directory with Finder, my users directory is no longer there. If I use terminal and check it with a ls, there is my directory in the /Users folder. In the finder "left" plane, my username is there with a house icon right next to it, and my documents, and corresponding shortcuts on the left pane that should be in my /Users/shortname are there, I can access them all. Its freaking me out, I verifed that there is no symlink to another location, and checked the permissions on my home folder, username:username on the folder.
Anyone have any clue?

It is possible that the visibility bit for the folder got reset to invisible. Take a look at the article I wrote on the subject:

If you go to a folder inside your home folder, for instance Pictures, then in your case the test pictured in the article would show the home folder greyed (the article illustration shows the effect when the drive is invisible). Either the Terminal or the Applescript method would work. Go all the way to the end of the article for a discussion of the Applescript for a folder.

Weird FCP X Event issue

Had a problem with FCP X and it shut down. Reopened it, and the event I was working on is still there in name but nothing is in the viewer windos...no clips, no project files, nothing. If you notice, right where it says "Sauls Howard Wedding" there is nothing.
The original media, files, etc are all still in the library package, but I cannot get them to come up when I open the library in FCP X. I trashed the preferences, moved the library to a different drive, created a new library on a new drive and moved all the files to it, but still no luck.
Any inputs as to what I am doing wrong?

There are a lot of posts about corruption of the library data base – often due to application crashes. With the app closed, in the Finder, locate your library, right click and click Show Package Contents. Drag the flexolibrary file to the trash and restart FCP X.
If things haven't returned to normal after doing that, go to Backups (probably in your Movies folder) and open the backup library with the most recent time-stamp prior to the crash.

Real weird labview behavior

I have a vi that will work for hours or at times days, then it will hang with no error messages or obvious reason; the run arrow continues to show it running but its not. After I figure out the vi isn't working anymore, I hit the abort button and get the "resetting vi: dialog box. The only way to shut it down is to kill labview from the task manager. But then, when I restart labview, it doesn't work correctly and still appears in "processes" of the taskmanager, hogging lots of memory. Trying to kill it there gives an access denied dialog box. The only solution is to reboot.
I am reading several serial ports asynchronously and it appears to hang when addressing them. I have a NI AT232/16 card (PCI card with 16 serial p
orts). I am wondering if there is a timing issue reading different serial ports on the same card - any suggestions?

I've had this behaviour when something goes wrong in a low level hardware
access and an operation simply hangs, never timing out. The "resetting vi.."
dialog appears while Labview is waiting for the failed call to return so it
can closedown execution of the vi, but if it never does then there's little
it can do about it. My suspicion is that this is something with the card or
the card drivers rather than with Labview.
I assume you've already done a search (given it's an NI card) and found
nothing that seems relevant so all you can do is keep playing with it;
update the drivers if there's a newer version available and if that doesn't
fix it see if you can isolate the problem. Perhaps try changing things like
handshaking if you have the option to. And perhaps tr
y writing a "stress
tester"- a VI that opens one port for writing and another for reading,
connect a null modem cable between, send lots of data at different rates and
see if that makes diagnosis easier.

How would you implement a "real" on key released event?

Hello there.
I'm looking into key bindings and I'm trying to implement a "keep doing as long as space is pressed" feature. Figuratively speaking the optimal solution would be:
space key is pressed -> call something.start()
space key is released -> call something.stop()
The thing is, the space key can be held down for several seconds and that does not generate one clear pressed and one clear released event. Instead you get a whole series of pressed and released events during the whole time the key is being pressed down. Actually it's logical. Click on some input field on your screen and keep a key pressed, you will see what I mean. :)
So if I try to use:
getInputMap().put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke("pressed SPACE"), "start");...and...
getInputMap().put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke("released SPACE"), "stop");I don't get what I want. Start and stop are being called like crazy.
So now, what would be the best way to react only to the first pressed and the last released event? Discarding events that follow each other too fast doesn't seem like an elegant solution.

Instead of timers I chose the following IMHO simpler and more reliable solution:

Ok I have a real weird situation.

I just bought a new MacPro. I backed up my old computer on an external. When I install the Airport Utility on the new system it states there is no airport available, even though I have wireless and my wireless access is through the airport. When I boot my new computer from my backup drive, I can see and change the Airport Extreme unit though the Airport Utility software.
I have tried to install the airport utility software on multiple macs and various copies of OSX (I keep different images of OSX for various things I do for example desktop publishing, audio or video editing, word processing, gaming, etc).
I am using the same build of 10.5.1 and everything else seems the same other than the older drive was an upgrade from 10.4 where my new computer is fresh from Apple.
Any ideas?
Things I have tried:
1) reboot
2) re-power the airport extreme and cable
3) reset the airport extreme
4) created another fresh os X install on a different backup drive but same problem

I'm trying but nothing comes my way to assist other than this point:
