Well it's been a while since I did a great deal of programming, and now I need to quickly learn how to make a reasonably complicated app. It is a catalogue and ordering application that will be distributed on CD. Essentially it will allow customers to build up orders offline from a personalised catalog, including features such as creating order-sets which can be treated as special catalogue items.
The easiest way to make this work in a cross-platform way seems to be to include a web server on the CD that will serve a PHP/SQLite based system. The difficulty with this is inluding a web server/servers that will run straight off the CD on windows, and macos/linux if possible (Stunnix Perl Web Server is one possibility, but it costs money...). Another difficulty is in storing order-data. I want to have a fixed product catalog as well as a way of storing order information on the user's machine. This part lends itself better to something more like a java app, perhaps. Yet building a java app would make the GUI aspect a whole lot more complicated - I want to be able to print out report-style output, which would be much easier with a web-based method. If there is reasonably straight-forward way of copying databases around on a system running a PHP server and then connecting to them, then maybe my problem is solved.
Now, I do have some programming experience, but it doesn't extend much beyond VB based database apps (ASP (not .net) and Access). I would appreciate any tips or recommendations as to how to get started on the above.
PS: I have considered a Live-CD approach, but this is not acceptable because of the data persistance requirements, and also would prevent customers using the system alongside other apps, like their email client etc.

Well I just had a look at what's available when it comes to python and quickly got lost due to the sheer number of web app. frameworks available. On the other hand I do think using PHP could fairly easily allow the relevant db file manipulation through the copy function etc. PHP web programming is fairly easy to grasp for me; there are plently of PHP compatible servers, including Stunnix and some other embeddable-type servers, and they provide a nice online language reference. Python ain't an HTML-embedded sripting language, and thus I don't understand how I would use it for a web-app... yet :oops:

IMovie: I uploaded HDV video from a Canon HV20 and then to YouTube. The video and the audio are out of sync. The audio seems to precede the video by a tiny bit which is disconcerting. Any recommendations about how to correct this? Thank you.

I downloaded video via iMovie from my Canon HV20. The video was in HDV. I then published it to YouTube and Vimeo and in both cases, the audio is out of sync: the video precedes the audio by a fraction of a second. The original is fine as viewed in the camera.
Any suggestions as to why and how to correct it?

Contrary to what Geeks on Hugs is telling you, Mac OS X does indeed have a basic malware scanner. It is not a feature that is directly accessible to the user, and works a bit differently than every other malware scanner out there. Gatekeeper, which has been mentioned here, is entirely separate, and provides a different method for helping to protect you against malware.
The anti-malware scanner in Mac OS X is called XProtect. When you download an application (or any other kind of executable code), it is automatically "quarantined," so that when you open it you're asked if you really want to do that. I'm sure you're very familiar with this aspect of Mac OS X if you have ever downloaded any apps from outside the App Store. What you don't know, though, is that each time you try to open a new app, that app is checked by XProtect. If it is identified as malware, you will not be allowed to open it, and will be warned that it's malware.
At this time, there is no known malware that can infect a properly up-to-date Mac. All current malware will be blocked by one or more methods.

I have a 250 gig drive and try to keep at least 100 gigs unused at all times, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, back up with Time Machine and CrashPlan, and have OS X 10.7.3.
This was my first Mac since an old Apple II GS. After that I used PC's and got really good at reformatting, replacing drives, reinstalling, defragging, resolving software conflicts, etc. Since switching back to Macs (five in my extended family now), I haven't had to do any of those things. So, although, the cost is three times as much, the aggrevation has been ten times less.
I'm retired and living on a fixed income and would therefore like to keep this computer running as opposed to constatntly upgrading.
That said, any tips?

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior. Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

Synk Standard
Tri-Backup

Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Adding more RAM, if feasible, and a new, faster hard drive may also help pep it up a little.

I am new to LC (two months only). Recently company is doing some evaluation on LC 8.2 and my boss assigned the following task to me (I simplified it):
Form: (Enclosed)
* Two text fields: CommentTextField1 and CommentTextField2
* Two signature fields: SignatureField1 and SignatureField2
I've associated the SignatureField1 to lock CommentTextField1 and associated the SignatureField2 to lock CommentTextField2.
The progress to implement is:
Step 1) Ray Woodard open the form in workspace, type in CommentTextField1, Sign the SignatureField1, Submit.
Step 2) Alex Pink open the form in workspace, type in CommentTextField2, Sign the SignatureField2, Submit.
Any suggestions on how to implement the progress? Please help! Thanks a lot!
(What I am able to accomplish so far is the step 1, but I am not confident about that. Please point me the right solution. Should I use xfaForm or Document Form, render/submit as default or PDF, submit as XDP or PDF etc...? I am so confused and frustrated now!)

Your example helped me a lot. I am able to run the process, but I still have three doubts:
1) When I set "Submit As" to "PDF" rather than "XDP" by default, I am not able to submit the form in the workspace client with "Adobe Reader" installed. But I am able to submit the form in the workspace client with "Adobe Acrobat" installed. Is it normal?
2) What does "Form Bridge" do in this whole process here?
3) If I don't want to hard code the submit URL in the form, do I have another option, like using other renders?

I've this problem.
In our application to control healthcare expense I've implemented a cube with 6 dimensions. (here for who knows Italian : http://www.oracle.com/global/it/customers/profiles/profile_77.html )
The biggest dimension is the "patient" one, with 1.500.000 units at 5th level, grouped in geographic aggregates, until the entire city at highest level.
Now customers wants to have the possibility to select patiens with chronic disease from these. There are about 500 kinds of chronic diseases.
Every patient can have no one, one, or (and this is the problem) more then one of these chronic disease.
How to try to implement this? as a new dimensions or as an attribute ?
I've thought that best way is to introduce a new (chronic diseases) dimension, to have a way to select one or more of these diseases at all levels of patient dimension.
I'm asking how to solve the problem that a single patien can also have more than one disease.
Is there any way to implement this ?

my target is to add the "ilnesses" selection to other ones. The most important cube of my applications analyze
healthcare expenses from six dimensions. Customer wants analyze cube "adding" a way to select only "ilnesses" patients and elvaluate their expense.
I'm in doubt becouse a patient can also have more then one ilness, so I can't simply add a "ilnesses" dimensions to the cube and mapping it to an "ilness_id" in the fact table.
How can the two dimensioned cube to help me in this ?

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
You may see one folder in there and that's the one you want. If you see more than one, look for the one with the most recently modified files.

Usually it's because you are not making internet connection via wifi.

Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

On the MBP, in iTunes, switch to Song view and enable the iCloud Status column by pulling down View > View options and selecting the option for "iCloud Status." Close the small window. Look for any tracks that have a status of "waiting." If you see several of them disable iTunes Match while holding down the Option key. Quit iTunes, wait a few seconds, then open it again and turn iTM back on. Let it compelete the scan. Wait until all tracks that are "waiting" have a status of either "matched" or "uploaded."
On the iPad, turn off iTunes Match then launch the Music app and let the contents clear out. Power cycle the iPad for good measure, then re-enable the service once all the tracks in iTunes have been processed.
