Any techniques to speeden up Server model generation/Table to Entity retrofit??

Hi,
Do we have any technique/method to speeden up the Server Model generation/table to entity retrofit??
Basically I am reverse engineering an Oracle 8i database.
Generating ERDs from exisiting table structures in the database.
Designer is usually taking around 12hrs to generate the Server Model and 14 hrs to do the table to entity retrofit.
The client machine is Win NT 4 with 128 MB RAM and the Server is Win NT Server with 256 MB RAM.

Thanks for your hints. I can now generate Table API within Design Editor's Server Model Diagram. I started the generated SQL file and Package Specification, Package Body and Triggers are created. However, when I try to insert data in a Master Table, the following errors appear:

1. Bounce the Repository's DB Instance. Usually an indication
of RME errors.
2. Goto RAU and perform all of your maintenance
a. Compute Statistics
b. View Objects and Recompile all 'INVALID' objects
c. Clear temporary tables.
3. If you are reverse engineering with DBA privileges then you
are going to retrieve alot of uneccessary objects. Be explicit
in your retrieval.

Dreamweaver changed (no sites, no server models any more)

It seems like from one moment to the other suddenly i lost all my SITES (the FTP-datas, which you can save as .ste) in Dreamweaver CS3. Also I cannot work with my ADDT extension, "missing the SERVER MODEL " . When I want to re-install Dreamweaver CS3 (which I have bought) it asks that I put in the CD for Dreamweaver CS4. What could have happened? Thanx for all tips.

I have re-installed the whole Adobe CS3 .. and everything works again.

Re-generation a Server Model

Hi,
I generated a server model from a ER model. I then changed things in my ER model and re-generated but some elements from my previous server model are still there after (some foreign keys and generated primary keys). Is there a way to tell the generator to forget everything from the previous server model and to re-generate all the tables from scratch? I can't find...

I've noticed that the Design Editor doesn't always show changes even though they have been made to the repository.
Try clicking on the changed items in the Design Editor and hitting "Requery Selection" or "Requery All". See if that fixes your problem.

GenIL model generation and Table types

When we run the GenIL model generation program, it generates ZMDL* structures for each Z* structures generated previously by SPROXY. But each element that is a Table type is skipped. So the GenIL model is incomplete and does not contain table elements.
For exemaple, assuming the existing Z_QUERY_ELMTS structure generated by SPROXY:

Take a look at the attribute structure. It contains the list of all attributes of your business object derived from the structures of the server proxy. Also take a look a folder Relations, which contains relationships to dependent objects if your data structure is of a complex nature. In our example this folder is empty since the data structure is a flat one and therefore no relationship and no dependent object are required.

Unable To "Capture Server Model For DB"

Hi Gurus,
I'm new to this product.
I'm trying to do a reverse engg by getting an existing (oracle db)
schema into designer.
For this I first installed the repository in a different tablespace / schema.
Created a container.
Then -
Generate -> Capture Design Of -> Server Model ->
Source Of Design Capture : Database
- Entered the username / pwd / connect / owner
of the schema that I want to reverse enggr.
- Entered target container
- Everything else is default.
The "Start" button is grayed out. I tried deleting all the fields and reentering them,
checking/unchecking all/some checkboxes.
Not sure if its a GUI issue or configuration (repo) issue.
Running the designer on WinXP SP2.
DB version is 10.2.0.1.0 running on a Red Hat Rel 3 Linux box.
Any help appreciated for this novice user.

Hi,
Once you have entered the needed information about the connection string and container, go to Object Tab and select the objects. then the Start button will enabled.
Another way to reverse engineer is to use ERD component. Refre to the Note 299067.1 in Metalink.

I'm not sure how all of this works but I read a few of yur comments and figured you'd be the person to ask! I have an iPod touch as well as my iPhone 4. I'm trying to find an otter box for the touch because I truly love it on my ip4, not to mention ive given the touch to my 6 year old and NEED the protection. Anyway, I'm not positive which generation it is and don't want to order the wrong one. The model # is A 1367.

Data Model: generation questions

i'm using a latest and greatest version of the tool.
I seemed to have problems generating the relational from logical.
2 questions :
1.
emp/dept relation. in emp table i create a UK on deptno. Deptno is a FK from dept table.
that's fine in the logical diagram, but once i hit generate it produces 2 columns in the emp - deptno ( as a fk ) and deptno2 with UK on it.
I can't figure out why it's doing it and how to prevent it from doing this.
2.
when i create a view . BTW, if you can please! make the process of creation more... user friendly - i think it would be great.
Anyway, step by step:
create view in logical.
add 3 tables using the query builder.
add where clause using all 3 tables.
generate to relational.
go back to logical and remove on table. save changes to logical, try to generate to the relational.
My end result - no changes to the relational view....
Please advise.
Also would be great if you can point me to smth more than a "help" about all those convoluted options in the "generate" menu(s).
And thank you for this neat tool. The more i use it the better i like it.

you are right - it's making little sense. I agree. The reason been - I have to extend an existing schema. And i can't modify objects.
Here is the real life scenario ( maybe you will have a better approach - i'm all for it ).
1. I have a table Servers( server_name varchar2 - PK, + bunch of other columns )
2. Yes, it's not a mistake PK is defined on the varchar server_name.
3. I can't alter the table in any way.
4. I'm creating a new entity - Book.
Book should have only one entry per server, and have other information about the server, applications installed on it, etc.
5. there is an entity that describes applications, per server, per environment. Where PK is defined server_name, application_name,environment_name.
6. I think to combine these 2 ( server and applications) into Book . I'll have other entities off the Book.
So in logical I have:
applications:book => N:M
applications:servers => N:1
servers:book => 1:1
speaking of which... hmm.. i can actually have another entity where i'll store the server_name and other information from Book. and i can create a view where i'll display servers' + book's info joining them on the server_name. I'll have to put "on update/insert/delete" trigger to handle the DML. Plus i'll have to have a UK on server_name in the new entity...
I think it's good solution to avoid 1:1 relation.
But it seems that 1:1 will be more streamline at this point - faster to implement, lesser locks, better scaling...
... Which is the parent entity and which is the child entity? With a 1-1, how do you tell?Agree.. no way to distinguish.
... Let me ask this, on examples where you have a standard 1-to-many relationship between two entities, do you get just the one standard foreign key column?If you imply - "does modeler generate one column in rel model ?" - then my answer is "yes". It generates one column wo problem.

Trouble with opening/creating Server Model Diagrams

I created server model diagrams by drag-and-dropping specific tables from the Server Model Navigator. Is it supposed to take a LONG time
for this step (e.g., 3 whole minutes for one table) or should it be basically "immediate"? They eventually made it, but seemed unreasonably long!
I saved the diagrams, quit, and come back to the repository, see the diagram names, click on a diagram, verify the elements inside, everything
looks good -- until I try to open the diagram, it (Design Editor) locks up every time!!
Does anybody know why I'm having either one of the above problems? Is there any setting I need to configure?
(By the way, I'm using Designer 6i with an Oracle 8.1.7 database.)

Could be your memory. Designer takes alot to run, as you may know. Minimum should be 256mb. Close all apps and try to open
the diagram again. I have had lots of trouble with my designer locking up!

NVARCHAR2 table columns in server model generator

Hi All,
I am using designer version 9.0.2.4.
Oracle 9.0.2.3. NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET = UTF8
I have table definition with column whose type is NVARCHAR2.
I run generate server model definitions from table.
If I run the generator second time (or any time when table is already present in db) the report gives me database value for column Max Length three times more than it is shown by DESC <table>.
My guess is designer takes data_length not char_length from all_tab_columns or smth like this (when using utf8 the ratio is 3).
Any ideas ?

Just installed designer version 9.0.2.5. And this annoying feature is fixed.

Generating DDL from Server Model

I would like to generate DDL that matches ERDs from the server model in Designer. However, when selecting an application folder, and expanding Relational Tables, I see a lot of tables I don't recognize - they aren't entities in the ERD. I don't know where they came from, and some of the ERD entities aren't showing up in the server model. I just want to generate DDL that creates only the tables shown in the ERD. Any way to do this?

About your question for more complex constraints. That is not possible in Designer.
If you are using Headstart, you can achieve this by using CDM RuleFrame. This is a way to record all types of (complex) constraints (business rules).

Server Model SSI.htm error

I am using Dreamweaver 8 on a MAC platform and all of the
sudden receiving an error:
The following translators were not loaded due to errors:
Server Model SSI.htm: has configuration information that is
invalid.
This error pops up on every page of every site I have on my
computer. I have never received it before, it just started and
won't go away. Every time I make a change to the page I get this
error. I have removed sites and then re-added them. I have
completely removed Dreamweaver 8 from my computer and then
re-installed. I've tried everything I can think of. Has anyone else
had this problem or found a solution? Any help will be greatly
appreciated!

I never heard back from anyone on the issue, so after trying
everything I could think of I finally broke down and re-installed
the software. Kind of a pain, but it did solve the problem. Hope
this helps...

Publishing Server model and ER Diagrams

I want to be able to publish to (PDF or HTML) copies of the Server Model and ER Diagrams I have created.
It seems from the forum that this feature is available in some releases of Designer 10G. What version do I need to upgrade to get to get access to this feature. I am currently on 9.0.4.3.

You probably have everything you need in the version you have now. First of all, you need to get the diagrams into a publishable format. You can include them as images in a Word document. You can cut and paste into Paint and save as GIF, PNG or JPG. You can print with a utility that writes to PDF instead of a printer or plotter - the full version of Adobe Acrobat can do this, or there are open source utilities (I've used CutePDF with success).
As for publishing, of course you can use any web server if you like. If you want something more than just putting the diagram files on a web server, then you can install the Repository Object Browser (ROB). ROB is like a read-only web version of the Repository Object Navigator (RON). I believe that ROB is available for your version of Designer. Look for a folder called ROB61 in your Oracle Home. There is an HTML document there that will tell you how to install it. You will need a web server that supports PL/SQL web applications to install ROB, such as Oracle Application Server. It will also need a Java servlet engine like OC4J to use certain ROB features like file upload and download which you will need for diagrams.

PHAkt & PHP Server Models

Using Dreamweaver 8.2, MySQL 4.1, PHP 5.1, and PHAkt 3.6.5
I need to use PHAkt along with PHP/MySQL server models but it
seems each requires its own version of DW8's generated
mmServerScripts to access either Oracle or MySQL databases.
How do I get both the PHAkt and PHP/MySQL server models to
exist on the same website with one 'flavor' of mmServerScript (or
both flavors of the mmServerScripts) and be able to access both
Oracle andMySQL databases in the DW8.2 development environment?
Has anyone successfully done this? Any help or suggestions
are appreciated.

Generally speaking, you don't (not easily, anyway). DW only
allows one
server model per site definition. It shares a lot of code and
file names as
you've noticed.
You might try creating two different site definitions, each
having its own
server model selected and switch between them while
developing. I'm not
sure, however, how much of that info may be overwritten when
you switch.
I've not had to develop in that capacity.
My advice, even though it's not the one you'll likely want to
hear, is pick
one database and move the other data into it. I've been down
this road
before, and you're definitely better off consolidating the
data if you can.

Custom server model in DW CS5?

Hello,
I was wondering what steps it would take to integrate a custom CMS with a non-standard server model (similar to PHP/MySQL) into the DW CS5 workflow.
Ideally Live View and Code Hinting should work like the integration of WordPress or Joomla in CS5.
I am not a programmer, just a long time DW user trying to compile initial research for our programming team.

If you look in the left hand menu of this page, (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/dreamweaver/cs/using/index.html) you will see the extending dreamweaver and the api reference links, both of which you will require, (you may also require the creative suite docs, depending on what your requirements are).
There is a complete chapter in the extending dreamweaver, under Server Model.
Probably the best way to proceed is to look at your dreamweaver configuration folder and the user configuration folder, as these will show you what is required , (and possibly how to code) a new server model.
Unfortunately apart from examining existing code there is very little documentation with examples that will help, so best of luck, and even though this section of the forum is not well used, (or often visited) it is still probably the only place you will find any help should you have a problem.
