Anyone else been getting messed up engraving on devices?

Over the past few months I have ordered several iPod Touch 4Gs from the Apple website. My main reason for ordering them directly from Apple was to get the free engraving. The purchase price was no lower than I could have purchased them for from Wal-Mart or any other chain. But I really wanted the engraving.
The first one I ordered was a Christmas gift for my daughter. I wanted something special engraved on it. When it arrived the engraving was illegible. It looked as though a mistake was made a couple of times, and instead of scrapping it and starting over they simple engraved again over the first attempt.....and did this a couple if times. I phoned Apple to complain and was able to return it for another one. With that purchase at least the second iPod came with perfect engraving.
Then, in Februrary i decided to myself a new one. The first one came with my engraving just as messed up as my daughter's first one was. Again I had to go through the hassle of returning it and ordering another. I was hopeful that like my daughter's the second one would be okay.  BUT....when the second one arrived the engraving on it was even worse than the first one. By this time I was getting mad. I phoned Apple to lodge a complaint. I told them that obviously this is a quality control issue, since it happened 3 times to one customer.  If it could happen that many times just to me, it must be happening a lot to customers all over the world. Apple, by way of apology, gave me A purchase code for $45.00 off my next Apple purchase, which I appreciated......but I was sick and tired of sending iPods back, so i used that $45.00 toward yet another iPod, WITHOUT the engraving I really wanted. I am disappointed that I had to settle for something that was less than I wanted......but I think I would be forever ordering and sending back otherwise.
I can somewhat understand something like a spelling mistake that went unnoticed.....but an engraving mess such as was sent to me is plainly easy to see. Why even send a mess like that off to a customer. That is not good for business!
Back last fall, in October, I bought an iPad 2 which I had engraved. The engraving on that is beautifully done, but it is done using a different method, likely because the back is titanium.  When we pay $300.00 for a little iPod, we should be able to expect service equal to that of the IPad, IMO.
Obviously, Apple offers the free engraving as an incentive to get people to purchase their product directly from the website rather than from a retail store. This being the case, said free service should be done in a way that pleases customers, rather than creating headaches for them.

This doesn't help much, but just FYI, iTunes and QuickTime have never been supported on the 64-bit version of Windows (look here for the official statement). Some people have managed to get it working (at least tolerably), but from what I've read, a recent update from Microsoft has caused a lot of problems. You might try rolling back recent Windows updates and see if you can get things working again.

    If these charges are being made to a credit or debit card, the most immediate thing you need to do is to call your credit card company or bank and report the unauthorized charges. That company can contact Apple if they need additional information.
    Next, log into your iTunes Store account and see if the purchases are reflected in the Purchase History. If they are, immediately change the password to your iTunes Store account, making sure it's not something easily guessed or looked up. Then go here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
    and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store. 
    If the charges are not reflected in the Purchase History, then it's most likely a fraudulent charge to your credit card directly rather than an unauthorized purchase through your iTunes Store account and it will be up to your bank to handle.

    After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an error with Safari. You may want to consider resetting your device, which is different from restarting. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:
    Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    How to restart
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
    Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
    After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
    How to reset
    You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
    To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

    Yes, BUT...
    ... there are many problems that are really easy to eliminate by replacing the Hard drive, including ones that have nothing to do with actual Drive Hardware failure. These include corrupted install of Mac OS X, its EFI partition, clobbered partition tables, or the appearance of Bad Blocks in a critical area.
    Any of these problems can sometimes be eliminated by re-initializing the entire drive and writing Zeroes, and re-installing from scratch. The trouble is, this process takes hours to complete, and is not guaranteed to be successful -- you may still need a new drive after all that effort.
    I learned from my Plumber that consumers have no appetite for solutions that might work, and detest return visits for any related problems whatsoever. You or your friend may have had your drive replaced, not because it actually failed, but because the situation was troublesome, and the provider thought you would not tolerate anything less than a crisp, complete fix on the first attempt. And based on the cost of technician time, it may have even been cheaper that way.

    I have this problem too. I've had it downloaded previously on my 1st Gen iPad, so it even shows up on my "Purchased Items" list, but no icon showing any option at all ie, Download, Purchase, Open.
    Is it because the current version is not compatible with the iPad 2's latest iOS? If that is the case, isn't the App store supposed to serve the last working version??

    It works fine here.
    I noticed that I don't have /etc/php.ini, just php.ini.default.
    If I copy php.ini.default to php.ini, php does not work anymore, but if I just put
    date.timezone = Australia/Brisbane
    in /etc/php.ini and restart apache, it works fine and the timezone is OK in phpinfo().

    Yes.  My ordeal started with the pre-order debacle when they cancelled my pre-order for no reason.  I got the email notification and called the number they gave in the cancellation notice.  I was told that it was a glitch in the system and that my order was not cancelled.  She had to fill out some paperwork to help them gather data on who was getting these erroneous notifications but that my place in line was not impacted - still guaranteed to arrive on release day.  I explained how important this was since it was my 15 year old son's big birthday present.  No problem.  On release day, I checked my online account and it still showed that the order had been cancelled.  I called in just to make sure I was still on for delivery and was told that my order had been cancelled and there was nothing that could be done about it.  The rep told me that if I wanted one that day, I'd have to go stand in line at the Apple or Verizon store like everyone else.  There was no offer to help me jump in the line whatsoever.  As you can imagine, I'm really ****** now that I hear there was, in fact, a way I could have been helped.  I used to love Verizon.  I, too, have been a long time customer.  It seems they have been taking customer service notes from the likes of Comcast and Time Warner.  I have completely lost faith in their ability to take care of me as a customer.  Like you, I am evaluating options to leave this sinking ship.

  • Anyone Else Not Get New Message Indicator in the Messages Section of the Menu Screen?

    I have been on the phone with Technical Support numerous times and they don't seem to have an answer to this question, so I thought I would see if anyone else has experienced this.  And before anyone suggests this, technical support's answer has been to pull the plug on the box to reset it and this has not worked.
    The issue is with the "Messages" portion of the "Menu" screen.  I know Verizon does not offer a light on your STB to let you know you have a message.  Instead, you are supposed to be able to go into the Menu screen and see the word "NEW" next to "Messages" along with the picture of an envelope to let you know you have a new message. 
    For whatever reason, I don't get either of these indicators.  I never thought I had a message until I was at a friend's house and they went into their Menu and they had "NEW" next to their Messages along with the envelope indicator.  I went home and saw that I had about five messages in my Messages box, some of which were very old.
    While this is not a huge deal, it still bugs me that Verizon has no answer.  I thought my STB may have an issue, but other than this, they work fine.  (By the way, neither of my STB give me either indicator). 
    So I was just wondering if anyone else had this issue, and if so, how did you get it fixed?  Did Verizon have to come out and do something, did Technical Support need to do something on their end, or did you need to get new STB?  One time Technical Support tried to tell me that it may be an issue with Fios in my area, but that theory was shot down when I went to my friend's house.  I have never gotten either indicator, and I have had Fios for almost one year.

    As for the envelope in the menu, mine used to work but also stopped working on my DVR (7216) about a month ago.  To confuse matters my 2500s (2 of them) still show the envelope when there is a message.

    Ever since one of the last updates for Pro Applications administered by Apple, Logic Pro 7 has been starting with an additional annoyance. I keep getting a little load window that says:
    "Updating tree, please wait"
    Every time I start it up. Anyone else get this? It is pretty annoying. A push to get me to buy Logic 8 so I can appreciate Logic 8's 'superior speed'?
    Not like getting Logic 8 would make too much a difference there, being that I am a Power PC user . . . but that is for another topic.

    okay, your recommendation sounded straight-forward enough. Thank you, by the way. But when I went into Logic to turn it off, I couldnt find where I could. And that is probably a part of the problem-- I don't know how I turned it on in the first place. Any tips on how I get there? Is there a key command for it? If so, that must be the way I accidentally turned it on. Thanks, again!!

    Before I start, I'd like to make a little disclaimer that before the trolls set to work on berrating my naivity for the problem i've suffered, i'd just like to say "I KNOW THAT NOW" and hindsight is such a wonderful thing but unfortunately, the simple appeal of OSX has tricked me on this occasion.
    So to a mac user of around 15 years I find myself seething about my misunderstanding of how time machine works.  Unfortunately that misunderstanding manifested itself by way of me losing some work of up to 18 months old.
    Although i'd regard myself as an experienced mac user, I would never say that i'm a computer expert, and having trawled the forums to see if anyone else has had their backup device DELETE their backups, it would seem the best reason people could come up with to explain my error is simply "Time Machine is a Backup program and not Archiving software".  I'm sorry but to someone who has always regarded Apple products as being user friendly and simple to average Joe like myself, I find this excuse a bit of a non-washer.. Backup (in english) means Backup, it's that simple - and the way this is marketed is exactly that.  Just like everything else of Apple's.  Clean, simple, user friendly and painless.  Nowhere does it warn you that it's NOT an archive program (like average Joe even realised there was such a thing and / or any difference between the two) Nowhere does it tell you to manually backup old files elsewhere as you kind of expect that's the point of a BACKUP right?
    Obviously I know it tells you in the preferences about what will happen (hourly backups kept for 24 hours, etc etc) and that old backups will be deleted when the disk becomes full, yes i get that. But you would have thought it would give you a warning before it's about to do it? Or lets you know that the disk doesn't have the space to backup WITHOUT some deleting.  I'm especially surprised that when I turn automatic backing up OFF in favour of doing it manually.. It STILL overides on deletion of old stuff.. I just assumed that manual meant manual control of all of it.. Silly me
    Anyway, I think a little heads up before disaster strikes would be a highly valuable addition to the system. I mean, Come on Apple? Not much to ask is it?
    Like I said, i feel really dumb now as I really just didnt realise thats what was going on behind the scenes.  I was happily backing up at the end of each day for the last year and a half without a care in the world.. Luckily (or unluckily as it turned out) I hadn't lost any work until now, so this is my first EVER time of having to actually use the retrieval part of the system and to my horror, there was nothing older than February of this year!!!

    Anyway, having read all the forums and info out there, the idea behind the system DOES make sense, BUT i cant help feeling that the way it is demonstrated is misleading and I emplore Apple to either make it more obvious to the likes of myself (who am a simple musician, not a computing expert) who just embrace it as a simple and painless exercise to keep all our hard work safe without buying 3rd party stuff.  Or even better, as I suggested, make some kind of software changes to offer a safety net to stop this happening to others.. Or ****, why not develope some Archive system too!!!

    I know it does not help much now but there is a setting in TM to warn when old backups are deleted.
    You may want to turn it on moving forward:
    System Preferences > Time Machine > Options > check Notify after old backups are deleted.
