Anyone want a real cool Linux Live CD?

Hi,
Just thought I would tell everyone that if they want a cool Arch based live CD, then why not try Archie.
Wiki page for Archie
More info & help here

It's just an RC and it is buggy   I don't think he has a problem with the buggyness as the release is to fix thaty buggyness but it would be great if everyone is aware of this

  • Want to learn GNU/Linux for real. Thinking of trying Arch.

So, I'm thinking about trying to put Arch Linux on a partition to force myself into a more "intimate" relationship with Linux, while still using Ubuntu as my primary operating system.
So far, I've been using Ubuntu for two years and kinda treading water in terms of actually understanding the system. I understand what my system is doing only slightly better than they average 'tech-savy windows user' might, which is to say that I am quite good manipulating the GUI, have customised a couple of configuration files (though nothing really essential to the system), and can get some basic tasks done from the command line. I've managed to figure out how to do custom booting and partitioning for multiple operating systems as well, but relying heavily on GUI tools. I have no idea how to, say, do a full hardware configuration, or even get the gnome GUI up and running from a console. I have used a couple of command line tools to listen to music, watch movies, and browse the web, but not much more. Last but not least, I'm terrified of vim and emacs. I can usually bend nano to my will if I must, but if edit any system files, it will normally be in gedit.
I want to fix all of that, and I think Arch might force me to learn it all properly.
Is it biting off more than I can chew? Is there a better way to learn Linux, or perhaps a distro that would be more conducive to my goal?
I'm no pro, I just want to learn.

What would you say if I did what you said here, but just skipped out on the slackware and the gentoo?
I've had this secret crazy dream of doing LFS for a while... I even have the book on my hard-drive, but I knew I could never pull it off at my current level of knowledge.
    Hence: Arch
Well that is only my personal guide.  I've actually seen people on this forum claim to go from Windows (and no real previous Linux experience) to Arch successfully.  I think it really depends on how technical you are and how hard you're willing to try.
I put slackware in there because it's package managers usually don't track dependencies like Debian/Ubuntu does.  The default Slackware install is pretty easy then but adding stuff will help you learn about dependencies more and how they work.  And it'll help you get off any reliance you have on .deb packages coming from Ubuntu. It also gives you some experience with one of the earliest Linux Distributions.
As for Gentoo, I put that after Arch to act as kind of a transition into LFS (source based entirely).  It shows you the difference between binary and source based distros -- although Arch or even Ubuntu can be entirely built from source too, in theory.  The idea is by the end of it you would have a good idea of what you like best having had time to try most of the major distros and of various types.
You can do anything you like.

  • Tecra S2: Problems with Linux Live CDs after BIOS upgrade

    Hi all,
a short while ago I flashed the BIOS of my Tecra S2. My current BIOS version now is 2.80. Unfortunately no I have got problems with booting Linux Live CDs like Knoppix or Kanotix. The boot process freezes, when the PCMCIA module is tried bo be started.
What i want to do now is to downgrade my BIOS version. Does anyone know how that stuff works and does anyone have an old BIOS version from 2005? I couldn`t found older versions on the Toshiba support sites.
    Thanks for all answers!
    biberkopf

Youre right. On the Toshiba page you will find only the newest version of the BIOS and the older versions are not available on the page.
In my opinion if you want to downgrade the BIOS you have to ask the authorized service provider in your country for the help.
But did you check this useful site:
    http://newsletter.toshiba-tro.de/main/
There you can check the area machine installation help
It provides some useful tips with the device configuration

Karsten, I mentioned "IPHOTO to IMOVIE" photo transfer.
    In fact, you did not.
We had NO idea if it was a photo or a pocket-camera movie you were trying to import from iPhoto.
You also didn't describe what happens when you try to import.

My pics are already in "IPHOTO" i want to import them into "IMOVIE" and although the
pics appear in the last import tab in the "IPHOTO" librabry, they will not show up in "IMOVIE"
when i click on the photo icon to import them...i see pics from previous imports only., but not the current one that iam attempting to import. It is not an device issue.
this just started happening when i updated to "IMOVIE 11"
OK, that's a bit more information.
iMovie was probably already running when you imported the pictures into iPhoto and wasn't aware of the last import.
Try to quit iMovie and iPhoto, then launch iMovie again. The last import should show up.

  • Issue on linux live usb key boot

    Hi all,
    I ve several laptops at home : X40, T30, T42p and a Dell D410. I ve a Corasair mini voyager 4Go usb key.
A live ubuntu 9. is intalled on the usb key. I ve made this installation with this tool : Linux Live Usb Creator. This works on the dell D410, i get the linux live booting fine on the usb key. On the three IBM I got the same error message "Boot Error".
The three IBM laptops have an up to date bios thanks to Thinkvantage System Update
I ve set the Bios Config->USB->Enable
Have you already experience this boot issue ?
Have you any idea to solve this issue ?
    Regards
    Pierr0t

I have had that error. I can burn a cd or create live usb pen drive and it will work on another machine but not on my dell desktop. It also comes up with boot ( and root) error. Strange thing is sometimes with a live cd it does and sometimes with others it doesnot...hmm
    Ideas anyone?

  • Anyone have some real-world experience with clustering and RMI?

We are getting ready to do some stress testing on a clustered WLS RMI
environment. Does anyone have any real world experience with this type
of environment. I'm looking for information related to performance
(transactions per second), how does it scale as you add new instances
(does it get to a point where another instance actually degrades
performance), how easy is it to administer the cluster?
Any input would be greatly appreciated,

I want to install a third operating system on my macbook pro. I already have windows and i want install unix or linux in there. Is it possible??

Yes, it's possible, but if your Windows system is on a Boot Camp partition then you have to first remove it. Then create however many partitions you want for the operating systems. You have OS X on one, so you need two more - one for Windows and one for Linux. You then install Windows and Linux separately to their respective partitions. Download rEFIt
Use it as the replacement bootloader so you can properly boot from each OS properly.

  • How can I boot a linux live cd in my macbook pro 8,1

I have a macbook pro 8,1 13inch. Whenever I attempt to boot from a linux live cd (ubuntu, kubuntu, gparted, knoppix) I get dropped to a busybox interface with a message that the live file system can not be found. I have tested the linux cd on a non apple laptop and it does indeed work. What am I missing that is preventing me from booting the mac with the same cd?

    Hi
You may have bought Your Mac just when Apple decided not to sell or deliver iDVD any more (to a hilarious frustration to most of us users).
    a. Apple do not sell it any more
    b. No it's not included in iLife11 any more (if downloaded from Apple)
    c. One can buy - secondhanded iLife11 boxed/DVD version still including iDVD but they are not so many and price is increasing
    Else
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.
    Yours Bengt W

  • So where are the "real" cool extras in CC illustrator?

I seem to have a cool extras folder but all it contains is a load of blank cutter guides... where can I find the real cool extras? Cheers!

    Manual's died a decade ago.
Free fonts, education, and extras with purchase died a year or two ago.
Cool Extras may be the last to go......
Now you pay to subscribe and get no perceived extra benefit for actually being a legitimate, legal, Adobe customer. Nowadays.... legal owners aren't really much different than those circumventing registration. There was a time where Adobe respected and thanked you for your purchase. They just don't really care anymore... absolute power corrupts absolutely.

  • Why would anyone want to use ASM Clustered File system?

    DB Version: 11gR2
    OS : Solaris, AIX, HP-UX
I've read about the new feature ACFS.
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/ACFS_11gR2.php
But why would anyone want to store database binaries in a separate Filesystem created by Oracle?

    Hi Vitamind,
how do these binaries interact with the CPU when they want something to be done?
ACFS should work with Local OS (Solaris) to communicate with the CPU . Isn't this kind of double work?ACFS dont work with .... but provide filesystem to Local S.O
There may be extra work, but that's because there are more resources that a common filesystem.
Oracle ACFS executes on operating system platforms as a native file system technology supporting native operating system file system application programming interfaces (APIs).
ACFS is a general purpose POSIX compliant cluster file system. Being POSIX compliant, all operating system utilities we use with ext3 and other file systems can also be used with Oracle ACFS given it belongs to the same family of related standards.
    ACFS Driver Model
An Oracle ACFS file system is installed as a dynamically loadable vendor operating system (OS) file system driver and tool set that is developed for each supported operating system platform. The driver is implemented as a Virtual File System (VFS) and processes all file and directory operations directed to a specific file system.
It makes sense you use the ACFS if you use some of the features below:
    • Oracle RAC / RAC ONE NODE
    • Oracle ACFS Snapshots
    • Oracle ASM Dynamic Volume Manager
    • Cluster Filesystem for regular files
    ACFS Use Cases
    • Shared Oracle DB home
    • Other “file system” data
    • External tables, data loads, data extracts
    • BFILES and other data customer chooses not to store in db
    • Log files (consolidates access)
    • Test environments
    • Copy back a previous snapshot after testing
    • Backups
    • Snapshot file system for point-intime backups
    • General purpose local or cluster file system
    • Leverage ASM manageability
Note : Oracle ACFS file systems cannot be used for an Oracle base directory or an Oracle grid infrastructure home that contains the software for Oracle Clusterware, Oracle ASM, Oracle ACFS, and Oracle ADVM components.
