Anyway to overwrite network home on client machines to start fresh?

Had a user that had some objectionable things in his network home (sync's at log in and out). He has logged into many computers, so his stuff is everywhere. I deleted his network home on the server and created a new empty network home. Is there a way to overwrite the old network homes on the client machines with the new network home using Workgroup Manager?

How many computers are in your environment and do you have Remote Desktop?  If you have ARD, just select all the computers and run the command gracoat posted.  Again, though, just make sure the path and everything is accurate.  Conversely, if you have a relatively small number of computers (I'd say 30-40 would be about the max sanity limit), just go through them manually (could probably put a script on a flash drive to speed things up a bit).  Now, a lot of computers and no ARD, you may be stuck with the two options you listed.
Although, after typing all of that...  If you have it remove the home folder on logout, even if he logged into an old one and synced back to the server from it, wouldn't it just delete it off that computer when he logged out?  Sure, it would be back in his account, but it wouldn't continue to be spread around to other computers and would essentially self-sanitize itself from any computer he visits.  Of course, depending on exactly what the content is and your policy regarding it, you may have to deal with his account again, but it would just be in the single location of his mobile account.

  • Network home folder clients (10.8.2) freezing

    Hi all,
I have a Mac OS X Lion Server (10.7.5, all updates, Mac mini server with TB RAID attached) serving network home folders to Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 clients.
Some of our users are experiencing freezes that manifest shortly after login. It appears that the shared volume is no longer available, based on the following system log entries. Again, this only happens to some users, but those users have it happen consistently...
    Any insight?

I can confirm that after 8 months of fighting this problem, this worked for us:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    Cafarom, thank you so much!!
File a bug report with Apple about this. I just did, here is my report, hope it helps you.
    Summary:
Some network accounts freeze soon after logging into OSX server. Upon logging in, soon after all the applications are reopened from the previous session, the problem starts (after about 1 minute from login). Applications will begin to hang one-by-one as they try to access the disk. This is fatal and the system must be hard-reset to recover.
This seems to be Spotlight related, disabling spotlight on the client machines seems to "solve" the problem.
    Steps to Reproduce:
Not all accounts seem to be affected, I have not yet been able to isolate the trigger. Once a network account becomes "infected", nothing can be done to fix it and the problem persists across all client computers. That is, trying to login with the infected account from any client machine on the network, will always produce the same degenerate behavior.
Once an account becomes 'infected', it can be temporarily cured by backing up the contents, deleting it and recreating it on the server. However the problem soon returns again.
All client machines and the server are running OSX 10.8.3, and are bound to the server. The server is the Open directory master and the DNS server for all machines in the network. No other servers or non-Mac machines are on the network. The server is using a self signed certificate and has the following services running: Calendar, Contacts, DNS, File Sharing, Open Directory, Profile Manager, Websites.
All network accounts use the following Home directory on the server: /Users/
    Expected Results:
Upon logging in, applications respond normally, the system and applications do not freeze.
    Actual Results:
Some network accounts will always cause the system and all applications to freeze starting after about 1 minute from logging in.
    Workaround:
Permanently disable spotlight on all client machines with: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
This "fixes" the problem and the affected network accounts will now be able to log in without freezing.
    Regression:
Here is the error message from the client machine that accompanies the problem. This message repeats verbatim on every login by an infected account. When applying the workaround this message is not present.

  • Mac OS X Server, Network Home Directories & Time Machine

    hi,
I am using mac os x server to manage a small workgroup using open directory and network home directories, the server is backed up using time machine. From what I understand, time machine does work on network home directories.
However, as I am backing up my server using Time Machine, it is already backing up the user directories. Is there any way of getting a client to access the server time machine backup to access the backups of the user directories?
Of course, it would be easy to restore files by logging onto the server as the user and restoring from there. I am just wondering if there is a more elegant solution available to do this from a client machine.
    any thoughts?
    thx!

    Hi,
I am trying to do the same exact thing and find that it is best to do this locally (for now). Not only is the network way slower, but it seems to make things worse. For example, things backed up via the client machine are routed from the FTP server/volume mount and different permission wise. When you try to restore them locally, it should work, but the folder had different permissions because they were initially created in root (for me). So, I hope they would come out with something better than what is available now. Thanks!

  • Best way to move network profiles to client machines

    Hi,
I have a client who has a small network of minis and iMacs working off of an old G4 running OS X Leopard Server. They have been using networked profiles, but have recently decided to get away from them and go with a local profile on each computer.
What is the best way to safely move the networked profile data to each client? What I was thinking of doing was zipping each profile folder on the server, copying it to an external drive, then creating a local profile and copy/paste the data into that folder. However, I'm concerned about messing up data permissions.
    Any hints?
    Thanks!
    Alan

That's what I thought. But as long as I can re-assign them it'll be okay.
Thanks for confirming that for me.

  • Time Machine for clients + Network Home folders?

I currently use Retrospect to back up my client machines, but frankly I don't like it that much. I'd really like to have Time Machine working for all of the client machines so that the users can easily grab copies of their own backups, rather than having to request them from me. I plan to continue to use Retrospect to back up the data on the server and to back up non-Leopard and non-OS X clients.
However, I'm also hoping to move some or all of my OS X clients to network home directories. I saw some mention in a forum that Time Machine doesn't work with network home directories, but I can't find anything about this in the server documentation. Is this true? Can't I have my network home directory clients back up their home directories to another share point using Time Machine?
Thanks in advance for any information on this or alternative ideas.

  • How can I install a jre on client machines with no Internet Access

    Hi
I have a lot of client machines located throughout the country which are connected to a central network (Oracle) application server. The client machines do not have internet access. The application now uses an applet which is accessible from the network. I would like to use the <jsp:plugin> tag to automatically download and install a jre on the client browsers that don't have a jre installed, when they access the jsp page. Unfortunately, even using iepluginurl="http://server-address/jinstall-1_4_2-windows-i586.cab, the client machines still need to access the internet to install the JRE as the cab file needs to access files at the Sun site.
Is there any online jre installer, that can be used on a network where the client machines do not have internet access? Or do I need to install the JRE manually on each machine? The browsers are all Microsoft Internet Explorer.
    Thanks
    David

    Thanks for your reply ChuckBing.
Unfortunately I had already copied the instructions I found in the Sun documentaion to the letter and it still needed access to the internet. In the end I solved the problem by pointing the iepluginurl to a non existent file and putting a URL, pointing to an offline JRE executable on the server, as the message that appears when the applet cannot be loaded. The clients then have the choice of downloading the JRE or installing it online by clicking on the URL.
    Thanks anyway.

  • How do I hook up a G3 iBook to my home network with only Windows machines?

I'm completely ignorant of Apple technology but pretty good for a novice with Windows PC's. To help a family member with an iBook (Mac OS 10.3.9) back up a gazillion family photos (at least 3.2GB in the iPhoto Library), we want to connect his iBook to my home network with two Windows machines (one of which is connected via UBS to an external drive for backup). But before I just connect his iBook to an Ethernet port on my Westell modem+router, what should I know?
I need to know all the basics and all the steps, in as detailed a manner as you can stand to tell me.
And when it all looks good, what are the steps to copy the iPhoto Library to a designated spot on one of the Windows machines (or that external hard drive)?
By the way, this is the iBook:
    Machine Model: iBook
    CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (2.3)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 640 MB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.6.4f1
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)

    Many thanks!

    Hello,
When I got my first mac this ( http://macs.about.com/cs/tipstutorials/a/xposxsharing.htm ) article helped me enormously.
It's very easy to write to the disc once you've set up the network.
On the mac locate the iPhoto library (normally open finder and click on pictures).
Open another finder window and locate the windows PC on your network, then mount the folder to which you will back up the iPhoto library.
Drag the iPhoto library to this folder.
    Wait.
    Wait some more.
When the copy is complete check the images can be accessed from the PC.
Unmount the folder from the mac by dragging it to the trash.
    Congratulations.
Beware though, if you're like me you'll find this apple thing adicitve!!!

  • Can't mount network homes with 10.5 client

    I have upgraded 2 iMac G5's to 10.5, both of these are served network home directories from a dual G5 running Server 10.4.10. Both display the expected login window with user names however neither will load the network home. A message "You are unable to login to the user account "username" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred." Looking in Console under all messages shows this entry;
    authorizationhost[96] ERROR | -[HomeDirMounter mountNetworkHomeWithURL:attributes:dirPath:username:] | PremountHomeDirectoryWithAuthentication( url=afp://'msn166-182.server.edu'/Users, homedir=/Network/Servers/'server.place.net'/Volumes/'Volumename'/Users/'usernam e', name=username ) returned 2
Using Directory access everything looks fine to me and the Open Directory Server entry has a green light and is reported to be responding normally. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get the accounts to login? I should point out I am not a trained sys admin, but I can find my way around enough to get into trouble.

    Hi
Perhaps 10.5 is not renewing the tickets properly? Make sure server and client are time synchronized. You could force the clients to re-create the edu.mit.Kerberos file again. Launch Net Info Manager on the clients affected, authenticate and select Config. Delete the mcx_cache. Launch Directory Access and delete the LDAPv3 configuration there as well as resetting automatic search policies for Authentication and Contacts to Automatic. Navigate to /Library/Preferences and delete the edu.mit.Kerberos file (there may be more than one) as well as removing the same file from /Users/Home/Library/Preferences (if there is one).
Key in the Server’s IP address in the DNS Server’s field on the affected clients. Now create a new configuration in Directory Access using the LDAPv3 plug-in. Use the server’s FQDN (internal DNS services will have to be running for this to work). Don’t bother with an admin name and password just continue until the setting has taken. Make sure the /LDAPv3/FQDN of the server is listed in the Automatic search policies for Authentication and Contacts. In 10.5 it will be the 3rd one listed, the others will be grayed out. Its a good idea to have /Library/Preferences open so you can see edu.mit.Kerberos file being created when you do this.
On the Server launch WGM and force desired users to change their passwords at next log-in. Make sure they use different ones to the ones they were using before the upgrade. ShiftCommandQ will log you out and present you with the log-in window, test again.

  • Is it possible to use a 10.9 server for authentication to apple clients without providing a network home?

We are testing 10.9 server with 2 10.9 clients.  We would like to get away from Network Homes completely, but still provide authentication from our servers.  All users homes need to be on the local Workstations.  So far we have had no success.  Test user accounts that we have created with homes on the 10.9 server login fine.  However, user accounts that we have created with no homes get the infamous shake.  I havent been able to find anything in the logfiles on the server that indicate what the problem might be.  Im thinking this setup may not even be possible.
    ddh

Firstly not only is this more than possible but it really should be easy.
Let's pretend the local account on one of your workstation's is 'dwayne' and has a password to match. You'd create a user account using the Server App with the same credentials (username and password). On configured shares add that user account to the share as an ACL (not a POSIX user), apply desired permissions and propagate.
Alternatively create an account that is not related to the dwayne local account in any way. Let's call it 'user' instead with a password to match. You use that instead to connect to the server.
Treat every other user in the same way.
By connect I mean "Connect to Server" from the Go Menu. When using the Go Menu you can either use the server's IP address (eg: 172.16.16.254) or it's FQDN (assuming DNS is set up correctly) or even it's Bonjour name (eg: server.local).
It really makes no difference whether you create a user with a network home or for services only. It's all about how you connect to the Server. If you've gone for networked homes you could bind client workstations to the server if you wish (although there's no real requirement for you to do so) and providing the required network elements are in place and functioning correctly (we're rmostly talking about DNS here) users with networked accounts will be able to log in and access their home folders on any workstation that's been bound to the mac server. But you could just as easily not bind client workstations and use the same account details to access a properly configured server shares (and additionally the user's network home folder) by selecting "Connect to Server" from the Go Menu instead.

  • Network Home Folders - Sometimes

Is there a way to have network home folders sometimes?
Here is the situation. (all servers and clients are at 10.3.9, but could be upgraded to 10.4.x)
In a school there is a 29 unit eMac lab and an iBook cart. The students each have a home folder on the server. When they log in to an eMac they use their OD/LDAP username and password. The OSX server authenticates them and then they use their network home folder. This works just fine.
But when they use the iBooks, they are using Airport to connect to the network. Network home folders are too slow to work over a wireless network, so they have to log in using a local account and then mount their network home folder to save files.
What I would like to do is have them login to the iBooks with their OD/LDAP information so that they can be authenticated using OD/LDAP but not use home folders when using the iBooks. (I could then put their home folders in the dock)
    Is this possible?
    Thanks
too many to list   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Considered, but won't work for this application.
The students use different computers at different
times. For instance the question is about users on
eMacs some of the time and iBooks some of the time.
So they would have at least 2 different computers and
many people might use either of them at a different
time. So a single computer could have many, many home
    folders.
Just to press the issue: is there a reason this is a problem (disk space, for example, or security)? Because the whole point of PHDs is that you'll be getting synchronization even when multiple machines are involved. If you're worried about home directories piling up, you could implement a cron job to clean them. I'm not trying to suggest that PHDs really will work in your instance--just trying to suggest possibilities.
In any event, it IS possible to modify your users' home directory settings on a client-by-client basis. You could, for example, have your users' accounts set to use network home folders for your wired machines, but override that setting on your iBooks to point to homes on the client. To do that:
    1. Open Directory Access on your iBook, select your LDAPv3 configuration, and edit it (Services pane > LDAPv3 > Configure, select it in the next window and click Edit. If you've checked "Use DHCP-supplied LDAP Server" you'll need to uncheck that and create a configuration for your server; consult the server documentation for more information.
    2. When you click the Edit button, you'll get a window for the selected configuration, with tabs for "Connection" and "Search & Mappings." Click the Search & Mappings tab.
    3. In the Record Types and Attributes pane on the left, click the disclosure triangle next to Users, and do two things:
    - Select "HomeDirectory" and delete it.
    - Select "NFSHomeDirectory" in the left pane, and replace the corresponding "homeDirectory" entry in the right pane with the following: #/Users/$uid$. Then, click OK to save your changes.
    4. Reboot the client, and log in as one of your network users. Here's what should happen: on this particular client, Directory Access will still log your users in with the account settings on the server, except the HomeDirectory attribute will be reset with the value /Users/<short user name>. That's what the NFSHomeDirectory line does: the sharp sign tells Directory Access to ignore the attribute in the user's server account, and overwrite it with the string that follows. The $uid$ tells Directory Access to substitute the field with that value (the LDAP uid field). So, for user John Smith, whose short name is smithj, the client will create a folder called smithj in the folder /Users, which is on the local client.
You could in theory use this technique to place the home folders anywhere on your client (like in /tmp), but it's best to use the default /Users folder unless you have strong reasons not to.
The advantage of this scheme is that you only set up the Directory Access preferences this way on the clients where you want to have local homes--e.g., your iBooks. Once you've correctly configured the Directory Access preferences and have verified that everything works, you can copy the folder /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService to your other iBook clients, so you don't have to go through this process on every machine.
There is one caveat, however. Configuring Directory Access this way will effect ANY user who logs in to your iBook--that is, any network user on your server. You can't set this up differently for different sets of users on your server--for any client workstation, all users on the server get treated the same. This is presumably what you want, given that you don't want to server network homes over wireless, but it's important to understand the implications of what you're doing.
The instructions above assume that you're familiar with setting up configurations in Directory Access. If not, you might want to read up on it.

  • Cannot login to network accounts from client computer

Hi. I'm setting up my first OS X Server setup for home use...I'm not creating a very complicated setup, but I've been working through the setup one step at a time.
Right now, I'm just running the DNS, File Sharing, and Open Directory services. I setup a couple of Network User accounts, and I wanted to try using one of the accounts to log in to a Mac client (running Mountain Lion) on the network. When the machine first comes up, I get a message that says 'Network Accounts Unavailable,' and if I try to log in, I get the error message saying 'You are unable to log in to the user account "xxxxx" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.'
If I stop and restart the Open Directory service, I get the following messages in the Open Directory Log:
    2013-02-15 09:11:01.017801 EST - Unregistered node with name '/LDAPv3/127.0.0.1'
    2013-02-15 09:16:19.139744 EST - Registered subnode with name '/LDAPv3/127.0.0.1'
Not sure if this is the source of the problem, but these are the only messages that are coming up if I turn the Open Directory off and then on again.
If anyone has any experience with this, or any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks!
    If it helps:

On your client machine login screen, type in ">console" (without quotes) in the username field and hit enter. Try and login with your network account username and password. What error messages do you get in console?

  • Contacts on client machine suffer from disk I/O errors

Contacts are running slow if not at all on my client machines.  I check the logs and it is having trouble with accessing the files and or writing the files.  all other programs seem to work fine.  Mail hangs but I think it is because of the contacts issue.  It seems to have trouble reading the contacts list and dumps the list and attempts to rebuild from iCloud and the server.  there are many .unknown files in the library.  The logs state that there is a disk I/O error while accessing /Network/myserver/Volumes/MyBook/Users/username/Library/Address Book (this is from memory but it is close).  The contacts work perfectly (as expected) if the user is logged into the server.
I am running 10.8 server and clients with shared home folders.  the user folders are on an external drive.  the drive does have permissions turned on.  I have wiped out the contacts directory in the  Library folder and it proceeds to rebuild but the problem is still there.
would rebuilding the clients from scratch help?

At first I thought it may be related to upgraded 10.8 clients and server i.e. went throught the normal install option without re-installing OSX.
So I completely rebuild (i.e. erased and then installed Mountain Lion from USB stick) the server and the client machines...but I still get the same issue, so clearly this is NOT the solution.
I have also observed (upon reading others' issues with Contacts/mail) apple forums - so I followed the the same action (trashed the Address Book folder in ~Library/Application Support/ ) after unchecking everything in iCloud in system prefs/restarting etc.) but this doesn't so solve the problem either
I also observed teh following behaviours:
Login into iCloud for the first time - appears to be ok
Run Contacts - appears to be ok
Wait the addresses to sync from iCloud - appears to be ok
    Quit
Run Contacts - still appears to be ok
(i.e. the errors above are not displayed in log)
Run Mail (which takes a long time)
Contacts sudden looses all address and effectively both Mail and Contacts freeeze. It is at this point I start seeing the above errors
I get a further odd error in Contacts (in a triange with '!' warning)
Basically Contacts and mail don't seem to want to work together - they appear ok in isolation - obviously this isn't acceptable.
I've noted that if I create a local logon on any one of the client macs, the issue with contacts/mail does not occur and runs perfectly smoothly. So in my eyes it appears to be a problem in Mountain Lion Server/Client Combo Only (I did not have this issue under Lion Server/Client Combo)

    Hi All,
I am getting an error message "All available connections to database server are in use by other client machines. The log file stated that there were ongoing connections of HRC with the CCX  (I am sure there isn't any active login to HRC)

What is the OS version of the PC you are running  and is it physical machine or virtual machine that is running the HRC client ..
OS Version Windows 7 Home Premium  64 bit and it’s a physical machine.
. The Max DB Connections for Report Client Sessions is set to 5 for each servers (There are two servers). The no of HR Sessions is set to 10.
I wanted to know if there is a way to find the HRC sessions active now and terminate the one or more or all of that sessions from the server end ?

We have had this "PRX5" problem with Exchange 2013 since the RTM version.  We recently applied CU3, and it did not correct the problem.  We have seen this problem on every Exchange 2013 we manage.  They are all installations where all roles
are installed on the same Windows server, and in our case, they are all Windows virtual machines using Windows 2012 Hyper-V.
We have tried all the "this fixed it for me" solutions regarding DNS, network cards, host file entries and so forth.  None of those "solutions" made any difference whatsoever.  The occurrence of the temporary error PRX5 seems totally random.
About 2 out of 20 incoming mail test by Microsoft Connectivity Analyzer fail with this PRX5 error.
Most people don't ever notice the issue because remote mail servers retry the connection later.  However, telephone voice mail systems that forward voice message files to email, or other such applications such as your scanner, often don't retry and
simply fail.  Our phone system actually disables all further attempts to send voice mail to a particular user if the PRX5 error is returned when the email is sent by the phone system.
Is Microsoft totally oblivious to this problem?
PRX5 is a serious issue that needs an Exchange team resolution, or at least an acknowledgement that the problem actually does exist and has negative consequences for proper mail flow.
