Aperture 2: first observations

besides are more pleasing interface, the much faster previews and support for the new RAW formats I noticed one interesting point for 1Dsmk3 users:
sRAW result in a very small preview. On the other hand full size RAW images are displayed properly.
also if the camera is turned to "auto rotate images" files shot in full RAW are rotated properly while sRAW images are not.

has anybody been able to use "image adjustments' in their trial version?
Mine stays blank
thx

  • "To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded".  Aperture already up to date. still cant open aperture library. please advice

When I try to open my aperture library, this is the message pop out  " TO OPEN THIS iPHOTO LIBRARY IN APERTURE, IT FIRST NEEDS TO BE UPGRADED. "
My apperture application is already up to date. no more upgrade available. please advice what to do.

The update refers to the library not the application.
So is this an Aperture library you are trying to open in iPhoto or an iPhoto library you are trying to open in Aperture? You're post is confusing on this point.
In either case make sure the library is up-to-date in the originating application then the other should open it.
BTW what version of iPhoto abnd Aperture are you running?

  • Syncing photos from Aperture, only first photo in one Event

When I sync photos from Aperture to iPad I find all the photos in "Photo" but only the first photo under "Events". The same happens with iPod touch and Photos in iWeb.
Where is the setting for getting all the photos in one particular event? The photos have been transferred to iPad but not to the Events with the exception of the first one. When I click on an Event in Aperture the particular Event opens with all the photos contained.

Can someone help me with this?

  • Aperture JPEG export observations

I exported 3 jpegs full-size with the following compression quality number (1-12):
    10 resulted in a file of ~ 2.5 MB
    11 resulted in a file of ~ 3.5 MB
12 resulted in a file of (incredibly!) 10.5 MB !!
Why is there such a big jump from 11 to 12?
And yes there is default noise reduction enabled and no changes were made between the 3 exports.

I see the same behavior exporting D50 NEFs as JPEG with quality at 11 vs 12, and I have never seen a good explanation for this.
I find that high quality conversions from Nikon's own software give me a file size in between Aperture's Q=11 and Q=12 export results, which I find to be ideal. For many of my exports I feel that the Q=12 result is too large, and the Q=11 result too small, i.e. I fear that too much information has been lost due to compression if I were to want to make a large high quality good print.
Honestly, though, I can hardly tell any difference in the image between Q=11 and Q=12, even pixel peeping at full size.
I would love to see a export quality setting that produced a result in between what we currently get with Q=11 and Q=12. It does seems to be a large gap.

  • Can not open aperture. Get this message "to open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded. Verify that you have iPhoto 9.3 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it." I have iPhoto 9.4.2. HELP

I have done all the necessary updates. Just very frustrated.

Someone else recently ran into a similar issue. If you're sure you've opened the library in the latest version of iPhoto, try the troubleshooting steps in that thread.
The fellow in that thread eventually fixed his library by grabbing his DataModelVersion.plist file from a backup of his library and putting it in his new library, but your milage may vary.

  • Aperture First Aid won't launch

Had a USB hub fail while my Aperture library was open, which evidently caused some database corruption. Read up on how to use the Aperture 3 First Aid function to repair...but the thing _will not launch_. Every time I try and launch Aperture (whether by launching the app directly or by double clicking the library) while holding down Command-Option, it just gives me the standard "database error" message.
I've trashed the user/plist file for Aperture, no change. I've reinstalled Aperture from scratch....no change. First aid just will not launch, no matter what I seem to do.
    Help!

So the drive was connected to your Mac through a hub. The Aperture library is on this drive. The hub failed while Aperture had this library opened. You fixed the hub or reconnected the drive through another USB port. And finally there is no backup.
    Accurate so far?
Did you try to open the library and get an error message and then try running the library first aid or did you go straight to first aid?
Is the external disk formatted OS X Extended? Do you have room to make a copy of the library? If you do it would be a good idea to do so before proceeding. It is always possible that while troubleshooting you could make things worst and having a BU of the library, even though it is messed up would be a good thing.
    Some things to try:
Run +Disk Utility+ *disk repair* on the affected drive. If Disk Utility reports that if fixed something keep running it until it reports that the drive 'appears ok'. Try Aperture now, fixed?
If no then start Aperture by holding the ⌥ (option) key only. This will bring up Aperture's library chooser. Create a new empty library. Try to merge the corrupted library into the new empty library. Aperture will still need to repair the library but some users have reported success doing it this way when trying to fix the library from the first aid window failed.
    Begin a backup program.

  • Get old Aperture library into iPhoto without need to upgrade Aperture first?

I've my photo libraries in an old Aperture format. I didn't upgrade to Aperture 3, because I didn't get a new Mac until recently. Now with Yosemite my old Aperture app can't be installed anymore (neither old iPhoto). So I've not an old Aperture library file which I'd like to import into the new iPhoto, but I get the dialog that I've to upgrade to Aperture 3 first.
Do I really have to purchase a $80 upgrade to get my pictures out of an old version of Aperture? I'd upgrade to Aperture 3 and continue using it if it wasn't already announced to be discontinued soon. But what to do until the new Photo.app is available some time in 2015, plus who knows whether the announced "will be able to import Aperture libraries" isn't also limited to Aperture 3+ versions?
You see my pickle?! I can't run old Aperture on Yosemite, I can't import my old Aperture library into the new iPhoto and Photo.app isn't available yet. What to do?
The option to run an old OS X via VMWare, import Aperture to old iPhoto and then upgrade to new iPhoto also seems a bit much work.
What I am looking for would essentially be a "Import Aperture 2 library into (new) iPhoto" script/tool/converter.
    Thanks,
    -H

    Crrect - as I said
you can get the original photos out by copying the masters folder and importing to iPhoto
And yes there is no good solution for switching from a outdated software package to a different up to date one - Aperture or pretty much any other software - iPhoto will update all old iPhoto libraries and Aperture will update all old Aperture libraries but iPhoto will not update old Apertue libraries nor will Aperture update old iPhoto libraries

  • How do I fix missing and corrupted images after update to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and Aperture 3.4?

Last night I tried to update to Aperture 3.4 on my MacBook Pro (late 2007 / 3,1 model) and received a message that I needed to install Mountain Lion 10.8.2 first.  However, there was no update in my App Store account for 10.8.2.  The update for 10.8.2 appeared above the Aperture 3.4 update after I restarted the laptop and rechecked for updates.  I proceeded to update Mountain Lion and then Aperture.  Everything seemed to be working fine so I opened Aperture 3.4 and watched it update the database without any issues...
Upon examining the small library (of approximately 1200 images totaling about 8 GB) that I leave on this MacBook Pro specifically for testing Aperture updates, I observed the following:
I know anything can happen with stored images, so I try to create redundancy by duplicating important photos on import to an external device, running Time Machine backups and keeping memory cards stored away until I am comfortable with the integrity of the first 2 methods.  I am not really worried about this specific Aperture Library on this laptop because it has become my "laboratory" for testing new updates before we apply them to our other computers.
In general, I try not to be too early of an adopter when it comes to software and updates--even though I have had remarkably few problems with Apple updates in the past.  However, my success rate with Apple's products and "feature curiosity" occasionally leads me to update early!  It is my curiosity that, again, has me wondering:  What went wrong and how can I fix this in case it happens to something important in the future?

I still don't know what happened to my test Aperture Library after the update to 3.4...Not only were my previews lost, but so were the original images!  Needless to say, I haven't bothered to update the main library on the Mac Pro because I don't want to deal with this level of uncertainty (even with backups in place).

  • Aperture 3.6 update for Yosemite is out!

    Check the software update!
    Also iPhoto 9.6.

First observations with Aperture 3.6 on Yosemite:
There is a lot of initial background processing going on each launch: face detection, preview creation, syncing with iCloud.
I don't see any changes to the graphical user interface.
My Canon EOS 5D Mk II raw files and the Lumix FZ28 DNG files are looking very different now.  The colors are more vibrant and the images are brighter; I'd even say overexposed.
The changed RAW processing is surprising, since the release notes do not mention it:   Aperture 3.6 Release notes
    Aperture 3.6 Update
Adds compatibility with OS X Yosemite.
Fixes an issue that could cause Aperture performance to slow down while browsing through images with onscreen proofing enabled.
Fixes an issue where Aperture could become unresponsive in rare cases when adding to a shared photo stream.
Fixes an issue that could cause Aperture to unexpectedly quit when using the Write IPTC Metadata to Originals feature.
Aperture no longer displays the alert, “This library has been opened with a newer version of Aperture.” when using Library First Aid with libraries previously opened in iPhoto.

  • XSI RAW to Aperture via DNG not working

I just got the Digital Rebel XSI and have been using Aperture for my JPEGs on my P&S camera and was hoping to finally shoot in RAW. From what I understand XSI's RAW is not supported in Aperture so I tried to batch convert RAW to DNG using Adobe Digital Negative Converter. However, Aperture did not accept these DNG files and said the file format was unsupported any thoughts on how I can get XSI's RAW into Aperture?

First off thanks for all your help. If you haven't figured I'm an amateur newbie who's trying to take the next step to being an advanced amateur with getting the XSI. I've been using Aperture for my jpegs on my P&S camera since I prefer it's organizational tools to those in iPhoto.
So now my "workflow" (I always think of that as a professional word and feel funny using it as an amateur) right now is to shoot in RAW and convert to DNG for including in Aperture and save the RAW files. If I later want to import the RAW files can I "overwrite" the DNGs with the corresponding RAW files and preserve whatever editing/touchups I did on the DNGs? Or will I have to reedit the RAW files again later?

  • I can not open my Aperture or Iphoto library

    Hello everyone,
I have the application Aperture where I edit pictures and can not seem to open it today when I try the message "To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded.Verify that you have iPhoto 9.4 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it." I upgraded Iphoto and then tryed to open Aperture while Iphoto was closed and I got the same message. Then I tried to open the Iphoto library and now the message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup. Aperture was not open at the time so I shut down then restarted my computer. The same Message Appered. Then I tried to rebuild the library by holding down the option and command key I tried all of the rebuilding options and when I went to rebuild it the same message opened in iphoto. Help me! I am a photographer with a website and need to get this up and running fast. I wanted to cunsult with Apple Support Communities before I make the trip out to the apple store.

Also when I went to finder to see it the library existed its now labled Iphoto library copy. I have a time capsule and restored it back by a day and it didn't work I still got the same message in aperture and Iphoto.

  • Performance and Usability Problems-Aperture 3.1.3 and 10.7.1

    Late 2009 iMac
    Quad Core i7
    8 GB RAM
    512 ATI GPU
Nik Software Complete Collection Plugins—all updated
I’m guessing this is due to memory leaks, but Aperture is crippled with 10.7.1. On my great iMac, Aperture now runs like it did when I ran Aperture 2 on a 2004 PowerBook G4.
With Snow Leopard, I had none of these issues.
With Aperture idle, it uses up to 2 GB real memory and 3 GB virtual memory. With it idle, it generates MBs of page outs and swap used. If I start to use it for adjustments, even minor ones, page outs and swap used increase dramatically. For example, last night after editing and adjusting a project of images, page outs were just under 5 GB. I’ve reverted to the old habit of rebooting to clear page outs and swaps. Last time I had to do this was with the 2004 PowerBook.
While actually using Aperture for edits and adjustments, response to almost any input is slow, with conspicuous delays. Even checking and unchecking an adjustment brick causes a considerable delay between the click and when the change is visible.
Again, with Snow Leopard, Aperture was a bullet with current configuration. I just ordered 8 more GBs of RAM in hopes that this will help until Apple fixes Aperture.
Anyone else having such considerable performance issues with Aperture 3.1.3 and 10.7.1?
    Thanks

jcrosby wrote:The "individual setup" argument is an oversimplification. With relatively current hardware, I can reproduce very poor performance when running Aperture in Lion in either 32-bit or 63-bit mode (though the patterns change a bit), and so can many others.
    John-
Actually I do think it is about individual setups. The kinds of complaints expressed in this thread have been going on literally for decades.
Starting with early-days Photoshop then later Aperture I have observed the challenges of heavy graphics apps with hardware/RAM/OSs/app versions. We have always been able to reproduce poor performance, because apps/OSs generally do evolve to be more demanding.
IMO our goal is to help individual setups tweak to achieve non-poor performance while we wait for stronger hardware, or an OS improvement, or an app improvement, or money to buy more RAM, or whatever. IMO it really is an ongoing individual-setup (e.g. last year I was running a 2006 C2D MBP with a max of 3 GB RAM requiring constant tweaking) issue.
Today I run Aperture under 10.6.8 on a 2011 MBP with SSD and 8 GB RAM and it rocks. I would consider 10.6.8 to be one of the tweaks that folks might do if all the other tweaks (like add RAM and run 32-bit) fail to achieve non-poor performance.

  • Aperture won't start after upgrade to 2.1.1 and 10.5.5

    Help!
I cannot access aperture library at all. It crashes straight away on booting up. Worked fine before a recent upgrade to 2.1.1 and system to 10.5.5.
    Tried reinstalling aperture, same problem.
I have my library in an external firewire 800 mounted drive. If I switch the drive off it boots ok, once creating a new empty library. But as soon as I point it to the library it crashes seconds into booting up whilst trying to generate previews.

But as soon as I point it to the library it crashes seconds into booting up whilst trying to generate previews.
can you access anything else on that external drive?
does Disk Utility find anything when you verify disk?
before you reinstalled aperture did you remove the
    com.apple.Aperture.plist in Preferences?
and assorted files related to aperture's first install?

  • How can I restore a whole folder which (containing multiple albums) has disappeared - has disappeared from my iPhoto Library (using Aperture 3.5.1)?

Last time I saw the folder, it  had somehow moved inside another large folder, so I remember trying to move it back to its correct place.  Now it has vanished completely - along with all the albums and as far as I can see the events and photos to boot. Searching for some of the album titles brings up none of them.  And they're not in the trash. However, if I open the Library in iPhoto, the search button does find some of the missing photos - where Apertues found none. Why should that be?  I'm trying to restore the iPhotoLibrary from an arbitrary date a month ago in my CrashPlan database - this will take over two days. I used Time Machine to restore the Library as it was one month ago, but no dice. Does anybody have any ideas??
    Many thanks in advance!

I assume, you already checked, if the search filters in the Browser and Viewer are cleared?
Have you tried to repair or to rebuild the library?
To use the Aperture Library First Aid tools:
Press and hold the Option and Command keys as you start Aperture. The Aperture Library First Aid dialog will appear and offer the following three troubleshooting options:
Repair Permissions. Some issues in Aperture may be caused by incorrect permissions for items in the library. To correct the permissions for your library, select the option to Repair Permissions then click the Repair button. You must authenticate with a user name and password for a user account with administrative access to perform this operation.
Repair Database. Sometimes internal structures within the library may become damaged and cause unexpected behavior; you can use Repair Database to try to correct the issue. Select the option to Repair Database then click the Repair button.
Rebuild Database. For more severe issues that can't be corrected with Repair Permissions or Repair Database, you can try Rebuild Database. It is strongly recommended that you have a complete backup of your Aperture library before performing this operation, either in the form of a recently updated vault, or a Time Machine backup. Select the option to Rebuild Database then click the Rebuild button in the Aperture Library First Aid dialog.

Addresses an issue that could cause photo effects applied to images in slideshows to persist even after being removed.
When exporting a slideshow, the Custom option now includes a Quality pop-up menu in order to control compression quality/size of resulting H.264 or MPEG-4 files.
Fixes a problem that could cause the audio browser to display improperly when creating a slideshow.
Slideshows can now be exported using presets for compatibility with Apple TV and iPad.
Fixes an issue that could produce incorrect results when the start and end positions of a Ken Burns setting were swapped in the slideshow editor.
Adding an inset to a photo in a Classic and Ken Burns slideshow no longer changes the width of a border applied to the same photo.
Choosing "Fit Selected Slides to Main Audio Track" no longer unnecessarily reduces the length of video clips contained within the slideshow.
Deselecting the custom duration set for a select slide by deselecting the “Play slide for” checkbox now correctly returns the slide’s duration to its default value.

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!
