Aperture crashes importing large iPhoto libraries

You wouldn't believe the trouble I am going through to import a 50,000-photo iPhoto Library. Since Aperture crashes while trying to import it, I must break up the iPhoto library into pieces. Since iPhoto can't export its database and photos intact unless you export to DVD, I am forced to export part of the library to 1 DVD at a time. Thankfully, I have a dual-layer burner on a new PowerBook or this process would take twice as many DVDs. But I'm still using about a dozen dual-layer DVDs just to export, then using the DVDs to re-import to a blank iPhoto Library and then importing each of those one at a time into Aperture.
All because Apple has no export to hard drive feature in iPhoto (maintaining structure and keywords and originals/mods), and because Apple's Aperture crashes on import of a large iPhoto library.
Ridiculous.

I have the same problem. I have about 15,000 photos in my iPhoto library that I've attempted 5 times to import unsuccessfully. The most recent tries had Aperture crash after 6439 (8746) images and 2620 (3667) images. The numbers in parentheses are the number of actual unstacked photos, since it imports two photos for any photo you editted in iPhoto (which I quite like).
I've read the crash reports, and I'm not certain why/where it is crashing, since the thread it says crashed has almost no debug info in it.
I attempted to import one roll at a time using the Import Files... dialog, and pointing it to the iPhoto Library. That was working, but given the hundreds of rolls I had, would have taken me a month of doing to get it done manually.
I am using a pair of external drives to do the import. One, a LaCie portable laptop drive, on FW400, has the iPhoto library. The other, a LaCie desktop FW800 drive, has the new Aperture library. Don't know if that is relevant.
I am fairly certain that for every file imported, Aperture is touching at least 20-30 files, based upon my perusal of the filesystem structure.
To bad it can't just figure out where it left off (which I can easily do by looking around the filesystem). For example, to get an estimate of the number of photos imported so far:

  • How can I import multiple iphoto libraries into Photos beta

    I have successfully imported a single iPhoto Library into the Photos Beta app.  However I have several other iPhoto libraries that I would like to import into the Photos library.  Think of is as merging everything into one now that there's iCloud backup.
    I started with iPhoto back in 2005 and have created a separate library every three years ever since.  Each one is quite large, ~40 gigs.
    What is the best means to import additional libraries into my new Photos library.  Unfortunately the File import option on Photos does not allow for a selection of iPhoto Library file type.

    Merge all iPhoto Libraries into one before migrating them to the new Photos.app.
    You cannot add additional libraries to a Photos library, only additional photos.  Or have several Photos libraries, but only one of them can sync with iCloud.
    To merge your iPhoto Libraries into one, use either Aperture, if you have it  (see:  Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries), or the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager:  Download it here:  iPhoto Library Manager

    Hi everyone.
    Recently when I launch iPhoto it crashes immeadiately and I have to 'Force quit' the application. I haven't been able to use it for weeks! I decided to purchase Aperture and when I open it I get the same problem! Both iPhoto and Aperture don't seem to want to work...
    I recently bought a new Nikon camera and imported some pictures and videos from that, so was wondering if that was causing the problem. I haven't been able to sync any more photos to my library since the problem happened- I have to manually drag and drop from Finder.
    Can anyone help? Here is a crash report from iPhoto.

    If it also hangs in another account then the issue is systemic. You'll need to reinstall
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
    2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
    A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
    If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
    If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
    If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.
    If that fails you'll be reinstalling the OS.

  • Aperture 3 import from iPhoto 9

    I shoot almost 100% Nikon NEF using a D700 and D300s.
    I just downloaded the Aperture 3 trial hoping it's better and faster than Nikon Capture NX2 with the objective of getting rid of NX2 because it's too slow and iPhoto 09 because A3 appears to make this redundant with the objective of just having the one package for RAW Image Photo editing and organising.
    If I import an NEF file from either camera I get one RAW image and the Metadata shows all the correct information. if I select an NEF image from the iPhoto browser and import it I get 2 images one is RAW and the other JPEG. but only the NEF (RAW) image shows the complete Metadata. The JPEG displays"Unknown Lens" under the camera body information and the following information is blank: lens type, serial number, focal length (35mm), exposure mode; focus mode and focus distance.
    1. Is this a bug or correct behaviour of the import function and does this mean that if I go ahead and select the import iPhoto Library function will I get get the JPEG that iPhoto creates as well as the RAW original?
    2. If that is so why is the EXIF data missing for the JPEG image
    3. What is the point of importing the JPEG from iPhoto if a straightforward import direct from the camera only results in an NEF image and not a JPEG being created which is what happens when importing into iPhoto?
    4. Is it possible to import just the RAW originals from iPhoto's library?
    I know it's new but if anyone else has experienced this I would be grateful for comments/advice.

    I think I answered my own question so for those looking at this.
    I imported my iPhoto library to see what would happen as I have a full back up if needs be and I found that it did not import the JPEG created by iPhoto unless I had actually made an edit to the original. It took a long time as there were over 4600 images but it all imported ok and first reaction is it does look a bit slicker than Capture NX2. A small personal preference but I really hate the fact that with NX2 I still see parts of my desktop background which is distracting during editing. and it A3 does seem a lot faster. I had no issues of the the described by others but I imported an iPhoto library not an A2 library.

  • Aperture 3 import of iPhoto 5 library

    Is it possible to import an iPhoto 5 library into Aperture 3?
    When I do a file > import > iPhoto library it correctly brings up the file browser pointing to the location of my iPhoto 5 library. However the import button is disabled - so the only option is 'cancel'.
    So I'm guessing that maybe it's not possible, however I can't find any definitive information as to what versions of iPhoto are supported. Any hints?
    Further, if it turns out that Aperture 3 does not support import from iPhoto 5, any suggestions on how I might get around it?

    Yeah that's fairly old. It might be you need to upgrade the iPhoto library to a more recent version (I'm guessing… 08 or 09… before import). I'm sure a KBase article would have specifics but I'm leaving that as an exercise for the reader.

  • Importing large iPhoto library for the first time

    My wife and I have a devently large photo library (10,000+ files) on an external hard drive. We use iView Media Pro to catalog the photos and the files are organized meticulously. I am considering switching to iPhoto or using both programs concurrently because I like iPhoto's integration with other Apple programs like iWeb. Does anyone have any recommendations with how to make these programs work together? I like the batch renaming function in iView but I like the smart folders in iPhoto. Any advice is appreciated. Plus, I am worried about losing my keywords when I import to iPhoto. How do I keep my keywords?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I use iView and iPhoto concurrently with iPhoto in the alias mode. iView is my primary management tool and iPhoto is used mainly for creating books, calendars and cards. I've created some Tutorials to assist users in transitioning to an all iView system, an iPhoto alias system with iView syncing the keywords, etc.
    I always add my photos to iView first, batch renaming and adding keywords. Then I import that folder into iPhoto so as to get the new names and have the keywords available to iPhoto. NOTE: You must sync the keywords back to the files with iView before importing.
    I feel it works very well, giving me the best of both worlds. There is one caveat to all of this: edits done by iPhoto are recognizable in iPhoto only as the edited version is saved in the Modified folder of the library. Also, any edits done by iView will only be seen by iPhoto when iPhoto uses the full sized image in a slideshow, book, etc. The thumbnail is not updated that way.

  • Photo Management with large iPhoto libraries

    I have over 50,000 photos in iPhoto and this slows iPhoto to the point of hanging. I am now importing new photos into a new library but this is a nuisance when wanting to select photos from both libraries for a specific porject. I'm not keen to have to import photos from one library to another. This seems very cumbersome. I have backed up my photos onto an external hard drive with Time Machine.
    What's the best and most practical way to manage a large number of photos with many themes.
    I'd appreciate some suggestions. I'm quite new to iPhoto.

  • How do I import old iphoto libraries?

    I found a couple of old libraries on a firewire disk I had tucked away that I need to pull into my current library. How do I do that?

    Depending on what information you want to bring with the photods...
    1. Just the photos: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to navigate to the old library. Choose it. (It may need to be rebuilt). Then simply select all the photos and go File -> Export and export them to the desktop.. Then quite iPhoto. Hold down the option key again, and choose your main library and this time go File -> Import and bring the photos into the main library.
    2. If you want to preserve metadata like keywords etc. then you'll need the merge feature of iPhoto Library Manager, which will bring all this across. You can download iPLM from

  • Easier backup of large iPhoto libraries in version 6?

    If I upgrade from v5 to v6 will backup be easier? My library is >12 GB. An easily restorable backup requires using eg Backup 3 for a set of >=3 DVDs (hard to do this to backup frequently- and possibly flaky), or breaking it up into libraries <4.3GB using eg iPhoto Library Manager.
    If v6 can really handle large libraries fast, it would be nice to avoid the complexities of several libraries.
    Does the new Library structure make it easier to split it into chunks which can be merged for restore? <br>

  • Aperture 3 import of iphoto library

    i downloaded a trial version of Aperture 3 but it does not appear to see my iphoto library (just music and photo booth in in Pictures folder)

    If I navigate from the 'File' tab to my iPhoto library - it shows it greyed out.
    iPhoto works fine and shows all my images.
    Any idea what is going on? Or what I'm doing wrong?

  • Merging iPhoto Libraries into Aperture, How?

    I want to merge 6 iPhoto Libraries in my new iMac straight into my newly bought Aperture. All have been opened in Aperture.
    I am assuming that onced merged I can then dip into my large Aperture library wherever I like, quickly and easily.
    Yesterday I merged 3 libraries into Aperture. Today I opened a different iPhoto library and then looked for my merged library.
    I can't find it and assume I'm missing a vital step. Poring over forums has made it no clearer.
    What have I done wrong or missed?

    I am not sure how you have tried to merge your iPhoto Libraries. Have you seen this help text?

    basically, you open an Aperture library, and then use the Aperture command "File > Import > Library" to import your iPhoto Libraries,  Simply opening the iPhoto Libraries in Aperture will not consolidate them into one libraray - you have to import them.

  • Consolidate multiple iPhoto libraries to Aperture

    I recently purchased Aperture 3.2.2 in order to perform a consolidation of my various iPhoto libraries. I primarily have two libraries, one on my MacBook Pro which contains photos from about the last 2 years (and is about 220GB), and one on my old PowerMac G5 which contains a few more years worth of photos, and size is difficult to determine as that one is partially managed (at about 130GB) and partially referenced (most of the older photos are referenced).
    To add to the complexity, I find it very difficult to tell exactly where the referenced photos are in iPhoto. When I go to open a referenced photo that is unavailable, iPhoto gives me the equivalent of a blank stare. If it would at least tell me the expected drive (of the few external Firewire or USB drives I have), I'd be able to connect and point to it.
    As I have keywords and stars for quite a few of my photos, I'd prefer to avoid going the route of pulling in the original photos rather than trying to import the iPhoto libraries.
    The more recent library (on the MacBook Pro) seems to have imported to a fresh Aperture library successfully. The library from my PowerMac (connected in Fireware target disk mode to the MacBook Pro) got about half way through the import process, and then proceeded to hang in limbo doing nothing but spin.
    Ok so
    a) Best way to bring in the remainder of this other iPhoto library? (just trying to import and not import duplicates does not seem to work, it looks like it's trying to bring in the whole thing again)
    b) Best way to resolve the challenge of finding and importing all referenced images, even if they are residing on unattached drives? Quite honestly I'd be happy to export a spreadsheet of the metadata with photo names, dates, and filepath references, if that was possible, just to know where things are supposed to be as far as iPhoto is concerned.

    Referenced Libraries on iPhoto are a bug bear. Referenced Libraries on iPhoto where the library is on one volume and the original files on another are a disaster waiting to happen - or in your case, happening rght now. iPhoto 09 and earlier uses aliases to track the location of the actual file, and these break if you move the file after importing, when the file is on another volume.
    iPhoto has no tools to fix this problem.
    You're not going to be able to get this material into Aperture until you do.
    No point in hoping that iPhoto will magically provide the missing information, you're just going to have to make all the drives available to it. If it still can't find the images then you'll need to use an app like  FileBuddy to fix the aliases.
    iPhoto has no ability to export a spreadsheet with the data you require.

  • Multiple iPhoto Libraries in Aperture?

    I have been an iPhoto user since the beginning, and thus have about 7 iPhoto libraries of about 5000 keyworded pics each. Up till now I have not combined them even though the current version of iPhoto should handle them all.
    I am considering a new Intel-based Mac and Aperture purchase, but a key feature need I have is to "see" all 7 iPhoto libraries in Aperture without importing all these libraries into the aperture library. I get the impression this is possible with 1.5, but have not seen it discussed specifically. Ideally I could see these old iPhoto libraries as 7 projects; from then on out I would import from the camera directly into Aperture.
    Anyone doing or done this?

    Ok, I don't know if this would count but here's what I did:
    I have two Macs and use iPhoto on both, populated with different content. So I guess that would count as multiple iPhoto libraries.
    I'm on my MacBook Pro and I mounted my home volume on the remote PowerMac G4.
    I launch Aperture and created a new project called "say "Import->iPhoto Library…".
    The file browser drops down. I navigate to "Remote User Home->Pictures->iPhoto Library". I also chose "Store Files: In their current location". Then I clicked Choose.
    Aperture started chugging along. I had created a new project and selected it for the import, expecting the imported photos to be stored in the new project. Instead, Aperture created an iPhoto Library folder on the root level, and a Rolls folder inside it. Each roll in the iPhoto library became a Project in the Rolls subfolder. Each Album in the iPhoto Library became an album in the iPhoto Library folder in Aperture. Slide shows in the iPhoto library did not get imported. Trash in the iPhoto library did not get imported.
    Next, I imported the local iPhoto library to see what it would do with a 2nd iPhoto library.
    Again, I said "Import->iPhoto Library…".
    The file browser drops down and points automatically to "Local User Home->Pictures->iPhoto Library". I also chose "Store Files: In their current location". Then I clicked Choose.
    Nothing happened. Background Task List shows nothing.
    Thinking that Aperture could only allow one iPhoto Library photo, I renamed the folder and tried again. Still nothing.
    I created a new folder and moved all the imported items into the new folder. I then deleted the original iPhoto Library folder that was created. Still nothing.
    I then deleted all the items imported from the remote iPhoto library, quit and restarted Aperture and tried to import the local iPhoto library again. Still nothing happened.
    So my bizarre interim conclusion is that I can import an iPhoto Library from a non-standard location but not my primary iPhoto Library.
    I'm stumped.
    I need to take care of other stuff. Will continue the experiments later.

  • Merge two iPhoto libraries into an Aperture library for my Macbook Air

    Hey,
    I've searched around a bit for this but can't seem to figure out how to to it.
    I'm trying to manage my ~140GB photo library on my Macbook Air which has 128GB of HDD.  On top of that, you can imagine that most of that 128GB is filled with system stuff.
    My objective is to keep most of my library offline from the Macbook Air, but still keep it all together. 
    I kinda went "all-in" with iPhoto a few years back to organize my photos so gave up on Aperture.  I'd always wanted to move to Aperture or Lighroom but the migration appeared to be a complete disaster.  Now with "transparent" compatibility it seems like a no brainer to get the best of both worlds. 
    I thought that Aperture allowed you store files on external hard drives but still have "thumbnail" access to them even when the drive wasn't connected.  Or did I misread that?  (Is that Lightroom?)
    Anyway with the new update I thought that I could merge my available iPhoto libraries into one Aperture library that I could always have access to, while offloading the actual photos somehow to an external HDD. 
    This would be a real winner for me.  It seems tho that an iPhoto library stays an iPhoto library.  So while merging might be helpful for someone with a big hard drive, it's completely useless for me as if anything, I need to split.  Or create more.  Or some other form of adding complexity.
    Any ideas here? 

    Figured this out on my own. 
    Make a backup of everything - Aperture seems to require rebuilds and stuff and stories abound of "things going a bit wrong." 
    Did you make a backup?  If you don't want to or can't, I wouldn't do this.  After all, it's your photos!
    Setup your Aperture library on a USB drive.
    Update iphoto to the newest version.  Open all your libraries in iPhoto to update them.  This may take awhile depending on library size.
    Import whatever iphoto libraries you have to Aperture.  This make take awhile (hours!) - if your stuff is more than say 25 gigs I'd recommend setting it up for overnight.
    Once everything is in Aperture - check its all working right.  Then go ahead and maybe make another backup
    Then migrate your photos out of the library.  This takes all the originals and stores them elsewhere, called "offline".  Once they're there, you can't move them around, so pick a good spot!!  This also takes forever.
    Once this is done your Aperture library should be smaller and just copy it to your MacbookAir
    I'm still working on this as it looks like something went funky and I have to rebuild my thumbnails, another overnight processing thing. Like I said, keep a backup   But I have a slimmed down Library on my Macbook Air now which is what I wanted.
    This whole thing is kinda a mess and while it's feasible Apple hasn't made it easy.  There's also some crazy stuff Aperture does with thumbnails and "previews" so that they take a bunch of space up (in my case almost as much as my photos), so you might have to work with that. 
    The guy at Apertureexpert.com is a genius.

  • Importing from iPhoto to Aperture failed

    I have iPhoto 9.2.1 and Aperture 3.2.2 and Lion 10.7.2 with a newly re-installed Lion.  After buying Aperture, I imported my entire iPhoto library. There are 16,182 pictures in iPhoto. In Aperture, I now have 19,568 pictures. But, in Aperture, not all of my Events transferred.  Also, there are many pictures in the Events in iPhoto that did not transfer to the same Event name in Aperture. I have no confidence in my iPhoto library being properly imported into Aperture.
    What should I do?  Import another library in Aperture?  What can I do to make sure all the iPhoto Library file is transferred properly with all my pictures going over to Aperture? 
    My iPhoto library size is 81.53 GB.
    My new Aperture library is 73.95 GB.
    I have 113 GB remaining on this HD.

    Thank Leonie for helping:
    1. Once I had downloaded Aperture from the App Store and launched it, I was prompted by Aperture to open or import a file, as I recall. From Aperture I imported my iPhoto Library
    2. I am not sure what you mean by managed libraries or referenced. In Aperture preference, General, I am using: ~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary
    3. Both Libraries are on the same internal HD
    4. It took several hours, especially for Aperture to work on Faces, to import the iPhoto Library. I did not open iPhoto Library during the importation. I was not using an external drive or internet site for iPhoto.
    5. I was not aware of anything going wrong during the Importation.
    6. In iPhoto, I have come to learn that both: a) several Events were never imported into Aperture, and b) other Events in Aperture were incompletely imported in that several pictures are missing.  For example, one Event in iPhoto has 24 pictures. The imported Event in Aperture has 11 pictures. When I look at the pictures in iPhoto that did not transfer over, there is nothing I can see that is unusual about them.  The size of the pictures range from 300 Kb to 1.2 MB.
    I tested the pictures that were not sent over to Aperture. Indeed, some had been edited as I found in iPhoto>Edit that I could "revert to original".  However, others that were not sent over had NOT been edited in iPhoto as I could not revert to original for them.
    7. I have 822 Events in Aperture, but I am not sure how to find the number of Events in iPhoto to learn how many did not come over.
