APEX database sizing methods and spreadsheets
APEX database sizing methods and spreadsheets
Yes I asking how much space the APEX 3.2 framework requires as well as yes to how much space to allocate for your particular application that happens to be implemented in APEX. I have 1 word form that contains 10 fields that are filled in by users currenlty now. So far, I have 50 of these completed (same form) and would like to create an APEX application supported by a database that can initially contain this data in one table once migrated and be able to hold more of this data as the new online system is used. Therefore, are any sizing methods, for example, function points or excel macros, etc...that can be used to predict potential database sizes needed based on an increase in data volume.
I ask this because currently APEX 3.2 uses Oracle Database Express Edition (XE). Oracle Database XE can address only 1GB of RAM. This limitation mainly affects how many users can access the database concurrently and how well it perform but APEX can run against a full 10g or 11g install of Database as well as XE, and you can upgrade rather nicely from XE to full DB if your needs demand

CRM TPM Database Sizing for CRM and BW
All,
I am currently sizing for a TPM implementation and have a couple of questions concerning storage capacity for CRM and BW. I have reviewed and created an Excel spreadsheet based on the SAP Sizing Guide for CRM-TPM but I am coming up short in a couple areas.
Here is the document Link: [https://websmp105.sap-ag.de/~form/sapnet?_FRAME=CONTAINER&_OBJECT=011000358700000711312004E]
1. Is there a storage sizing guide for BW or what has worked for the community to estimate?
2. Is the sizing guide for CRM/TPM correct (see below example)?
3. What has worked for CRM/TPM database sizing from the community?
I have a question about section 3.3.3 Disk Sizing in CRM. If the disk sizing is based on per promotion (for the condition generation process), why is there a multiplication factor for PARTNERS? I donu2019t believe we would have more than 1 or 2 partners per promotion.
I did some quick math with some example numbers and came up with about 2.9TB for the CRM database. See below for additional info based on the equation in section 3.3.3.
Part 1
20,000 Promotions
10 Products
1000 Partners
.87TB
Part 2
10,000 Promotions
47 Products
1000 Partners
2.04TB
Is this accurate for sizing the condition generation process for the CRM database? I am failing to understand why, for example, the 20,000 promotions would have 1,200 partners included in the base equation for each promotion.
I appreciate any time you could spend in responding to my question.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Oracle Database sizing spreadsheet
Hello Guys:
I am badly in need of the database sizing template for one of the projects. Can any one share a copy?
Regards,
BMPLets see what's missing:
1. A product name
2. A product edition and version
3. Any indication of how the database will be used ...for example the name of an application
4. Business rules related to the storage of archived redo logs, flashback logs, and backups
5. etc. etc. etc.
None of which is contained in any spreadsheet I have ever seen.
I suspect what you are referring to is the old Oracle Financials version 10 spreadsheet which I have not seen in a decade. -

Run Apex 4.2.6 and APEX 5 on same database parallel
Hi,
Is it possible to install Apex 4.2.6 and Apex 5.0 on the same database? If Apex Listener is used as Application Server, do I have to install two different Listener Instances as well?
ThanksHi,
I do understand your argument that there should be no custom code in SYS. But in the case of the APEX engine it's a must have to guarantee security. You might know or not know, but APEX is using SYS.DBMS_SQL_SYS package (a more powerful version of the DBMS_SQL package) to execute application code/DML statements with the privileges of the parsing schema of the executed application. Obviously you don't want to grant execute to that package to another schema than SYS because of the power of package to run code in the name of another schema/user.
Do not have an issue with public synonyms though - understandable from a scope resolution perspective. For multiple versions though, scope should be able to be dealt with using the Oracle logon schema (as configured on web server side) and private synonyms?
Unfortunately this would not be sufficient because the Oracle Logon Schema (most of the time called APEX_PUBLIC_USER) specified for mod_plsql/ORDS is only used to call the entry points of the APEX Engine like the F procedure or WWV_FLOW.SHOW and WWV_FLOW.ACCEPT. This would work fine until custom PL/SQL code or SQL/DML statements of your application have to be executed. This is not done with the privileges / scope of APEX_PUBLIC_USER, instead the code will be executed with the Parsing Schema specified for your application (that's where the above described SYS package comes into play). Otherwise APEX_PUBLIC_USER would have to be a super highly privileged user with access to any schema, which isn't the case. Instead it's a super low privileged user.
Let's continue our example. If the application PL/SQL code / SQL or DML statement references one of our public APIs like V, APEX_APPLICATION, APEX_UTIL, ... or an APEX view we are in the the situation that the application schema has to resolve those references. But a schema can just point to one APEX version.
How could that be solved?
When copying the application to the new APEX version, the application parsing schema would have to be changed to a new 'proxy' application schema with access to the original application schema. The 'proxy' schema would point it's private synonyms to the new APEX version. But even then it's getting tricky if the original application schema has definer rights packages which do reference APEX apis, because those would still point to the public synonyms. As I said, it's not so easy and there are many traps customers could fall into ending up with a situation where it's hard to diagnose if an application is trying to call different versions of APEX in the same runtime session.
But as I said, we are totally aware of the situation that customers would like to do a slower one by one application upgrade of their APEX installations to avoid breaking apps.

Hi, I would like to create a database from my numbers spreadsheet and create reports (like SQL). Is there a way?
Numbers is a lightweight spreadsheet. If you know sql you will know that it can handle many queries and is a real databases that can handle many thousands of records. Number is not the correct tool. You can make something that does something like a query but it is not truly a query.
Can you share anything about the specific application and how much information there is in each record? How many records (rows)? -
Lifecycle Workflow platform and database sizing guide?
I've been asked to investigate the technical aspects of the Lifecycle Workflow and Reader Extension products.
I've gone through the various adobe websites a great deal and found installation guides but nothing that provides platform selection and database sizing recommendations.
We are considering both JBoss on Suse LInux and WebSphere on AIX as a platform.
Is anyone aware of any recommendations as to the choice of a platform?
Any experiences or recommendations out there from the user community?
Also, is there any documentation that gives guidance to database sizing? Frankly, I'm not sure I understand yet whether it's just the routing/metadata that gets stored in the workflow database or the actual documents as well.
Anyone point me at or provide me more technical documentation?
Thanks
VerlynHi Verlyn
I can answer some of your questions, based on my understanding.
The workflow engine does store the document itself as part of the workflow. In fact, it records the historical state of the document at each point that someone in the workflow worked on it. You can see this by looking at the "Participated" item in Form Manager, where you can see the historical value of each form that's been submitted. Any workflow attachments are also stored in the database.
It gets a little more complicated. Depending on how you structure your workflow, you can choose to either store the entire PDF (in a document or binary variable) or just the data (in a form variable -in which case the data is merged with an xdp template whenever someone wants to view it).
Document variables are also a little more intelligent: you can specify a size threshold. Below that threshold, the document is stored as a blob in the database - above the threshold, the document is stored in a folder on the file system. The default threshold value is 64K.
I hope this helps...

Database sizing and also storing in AD?
Hi All,
I'm just spec'ing out an MBAM 2.0 design for our Win 8.1 deployments and wanted to just check a few things.
1. Are there any issues to storing the recovery key in AD (as we do currently with W7) as well as in the MBAM database? Other threads seems to suggest that it's fine.
2. Database sizing. I've seen figures of approx. 250mb per 10k clients. Does that seem fair and is that for each database (ie. recovery & audit databases, therefore 500mb per 10k clients)?
3. Our SQL team suggested putting the SSRS onto the Admin & Monitoring server. Is that a supported configuration or a big no-no due to security? Or does it use the SSRS of the CM server?
Also it might be worth noting that this will be integrated with CM12. We have a CAS with a number of primaries, so I was presuming to install it on the CAS.
Thanks in advance.
Simon1.) Not that I have seen. I have done this in the past without issue
2.) From what I have encountered that seems like a fair estamation. I believe if you have a more frequent or less frequent check back to the server, you may have a slightly bigger or smaller DB size
3.) I'm not sure if it's supported. Is there a reason you guys particularly want SSRS? I'm sure you could use SSRS to generate your own reports but the console allows you to generate some canned report and I don't beleive this uses SSRS to do that.

Listener EA2: database connection pool and connection revalidation
Hi all,
As one can expect from early adopter release there could be some bugs but I can't find any references in forum to my situation:
* My 11g XE database and listener are starting as windows services when server boots operating system (Windows Server 2003 R2).
* I configured my web server (unsupported Jetty 9.0.0.M1) to start as windows service when operating system starts.
* Apex Listener 2.0.0.268.17.05 configured to connect with XE using JDBC thin driver with default settings (initial pool size 3, max statements 10, min connections 1, max connections 10, inactivity timeout 1800, abandoned connection timeout 900)
* Because web server starts a bit faster than Oracle database when apex connects first time it gets "ORA-12528, TNS:listener: all appropriate instances are blocking new connections" (could be that database still starting but already registered service with listener)
* From listener.log file I can see that all further connections made from Apex listener succeeds
* When I try to open any apex page with browser I am getting 404 error and apex listener logs error (*time is 2 days after system startup*):

* For some reason apex listener keeps first connection status and won't try to establish new connection if first attempt finished with ORA-12528
* The same scenario is valid when at time of web server start oracle database/listener is not available - even if database and listener starts and apex successfully establishes further connections all apex pages gets 404 error
* If I restart web server windows service (while oracle db and listener still running) browser opens apex pages without errors and apex listener does not log any errors
* I know that I can avoid this error delaying start of web server windows service but it would be nice to have production release 2.x without such bugsHi,
Is there any way to use the connection pool or Datasource while connecting to database? If I am using a stateless sesssion bean and using a Data Access layer which just creates a database session to write the persistence toplink objects how I can make use of application server connection pool?Hi Vinod,
Yes, TopLink allows you to use the app server's connection pooling and transaction services. Chapter 2 of the Oracle9iAS TopLink Foundation Library Guide provides details as do the TopLink examples. The easiest way to set this up is by using the sessions.xml file. The sample XML below is from the file <toplink903>\examples\ias\examples\ejb\sessionbean\sessions.xml. Here we are adding the datasource defined in OC4J and specifying that we are using the OC4J transaction controller also.
<login>
<user-name>sa</user-name>
<password></password>
<datasource>java:comp/env/jdbc/ejbJTSDataSource</datasource>
<uses-external-transaction-controller>true</uses-external-transaction-controller>
<uses-external-connection-pool>true</uses-external-connection-pool>
</login>
<external-transaction-controller-class>oracle.toplink.jts.oracle9i.Oracle9iJTSExternalTransactionController</external-transaction-controller-class>
When using this approach you need to change your TopLink code slightly in the EJB methods:
a. Acquire the ACTIVE unit of work from the server
session (again, see the EmployeeSessionEJB code
example) with something like:
UnitOfWork uow = clientSession.getActiveUnitOfWork();
b. Calls to uow.commit() can be ommitted or commented out
because the EJB will handle this. Note that of course
the methods you create in the EJB that are using this
approach must have TX Required (default).
Hope this helps.

Connect to APEX database using VBA+ADO code in Microsoft Excel & Word?
I am looking at APEX as a potential replacement for a growing reporting/analysis system. As yet I have not found a clear answer on an important question.
The current system is a shared database and a collection of Microsoft Excel and Word templates. Each template contains underlying VBA code that establishes a direct connection to the database via OLE DB (i.e. ADODB objects in VBA via the OLE DB Provider for JET).
Each template’s underlying VBA code executes stored procedures or queries as required, the results of which are returned as Recordset objects and rendered to the Excel worksheet or Word document. Similarly, in some cases, data entered into an Excel worksheet by a user can be submitted back to the database at the click of a button, again via Recordset objects.
Now most of our templates could easily be ported to APEX. However, there is a strong preference that some of our templates continue to exist and maintain current functionality. So we have a requirement that Excel and Word can seamlessly and directly interact with an APEX database.
Long question short – is there a way to establish a connection and retrieve/insert data from an APEX database using OLE DB (ADODB) in VBA, as described above? I understand that APEX sits ‘on top’ of a real Oracle database, and I know Oracle provides an OLE DB Provider (OraOLEDB) for Oracle databases. Would OraOLEDB do the trick, or is it not as simple as that?
Many thanks for your insights on this,

Apex gets installed as a separate schema in an existing database.
So it will not in any way interfere with your existing setup. You can continue to connect directly to the database from your spreadsheets, call stored procedures from VBA/ADO, etc.

Hi ,
Can any one help me to know, how to do database sizing for oracle database.
If database sizing is differed from version than i want to know for 9i,10g and 11.5.10.2 application.
I dont have basic knowledge for doing database sizing. please tell me know because i have assigned a project on this in my company?
Thanks a lot in advanceThe version of the database is irrelevant. Sizing is solely a function of the application.
In your case, since you have one or more applications in the Oracle eBusiness Suite, there is almost certainly a sizing spreadsheet floating around. If you post this question over in the forum for the particular application(s) you are using, someone over there may be able to give you some pointers. I would also strongly suspect that a Metalink search that included the particular application(s) you're using would be beneficial.

Difference between Session method and call transaction
Hi,
please give me the differences between session method and call transaction,
briefly explaining synchronus , asynchronus, process, update.
Thanks in advanceHi Vijay Kumar
CLASSICAL BATCH INPUT (Session Method)
CALL TRANSACTION
BATCH INPUT METHOD:
This method is also called as CLASSICAL METHOD.
Features:
Asynchronous processing.
Synchronous Processing in database update.
Transfer data for more than one transaction.
Batch input processing log will be generated.
During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
CALL TRANSACTION METHOD :
This is another method to transfer data from the legacy system.
Features:
Synchronous processing. The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
Updating the database can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The program specifies the update type.
Transfer data for a single transaction.
Transfers data for a sequence of dialog screens.
No batch input processing log is generated.
http://www.sap-img.com/abap/difference-between-batch-input-and-call-transaction-in-bdc.htm
Among the two methods call transaction is better compared to session bcoz data transfer is faster in it.
Differences between call transaction and session.
Session Method:
1) Data is not updated in the database table until the session is processed.
2) No sy-subrc is returned.
3) Error log is created for error records.
4) Updation is always synchronous.
Call Transaction Method:
1) Immediate updation in the database table.
2) sy-subrc is returned.
3)Error need to be handled explicitly.
4) updation can be synchronous as well as asynchronous.
2) ya u can use using the N mode no screen.
3)u can't handle multiple transaction in call transaction.
4) u can handle multiple transaction in session using the BDC_INSERT fm.
5)When u go to SM35 u can able to see the error records.
Which is best?
That depends on your requirement. Both of them have there advantages.
According to the situation u can choose any one of these.
difference between batch input and call transaction in BDC Session method.
1) synchronous processing.
2) can tranfer large amount of data.
3) processing is slower.
4) error log is created
5) data is not updated until session is processed.
Call transaction.
1) asynchronous processing
2) can transfer small amount of data
3) processing is faster.
4) errors need to be handled explicitly
5) data is updated automatically
For session method, these are the function modules to b used.
BDC_OPEN_GROUP
BDC_INSERT
BDC_CLOSE_GROUP
For call transaction, this is the syntax.
CALL TRANSACTION TCODE USING BDCDATA
MODE A or E or N
UPDATE A or S
MESSAGES INTO MESSTAB.
Take a scenario where we need to post documents in FB01 and the input file has say 2000 records (2000 documents, not line items in FB01 but 2000 records)
In the BDC call transaction method
We call the transaction FB01 2000 times (once for each record posting) and if the processing fails in record no 3 it can be captured and start with reocord 4.
Eg: Loop at itab.
call transaction FB01
capture errors
endloop.
In the session method.
We do not explicity call the transaction 2000 times, but all the records are appeneded into a session and this session is stored. The processinf of the session is done wwhenever the user wants it to be done. Hence the errors cannot be captured in the program itself

http://www.sap-img.com/abap/question-about-bdc-program.htm
http://www.itcserver.com/blog/2006/06/30/batch-input-vs-call-transaction/
http://www.planetsap.com/bdc_main_page.htm
Batch Input Session method is asynchronous as told by others here. But the advantage of this is that you have all the error messages and the data for each transaction held persistantly. You don't have to code anything for processing them or writing the logs.
But at the same time, the same feature can be disadvantageous if you need to react to an error or if there are too many errors to manually correct in a session. Since the session are created in the program and its execution is done seperately, you loose the trackability of such transactions.
With a call transaction, what was a disadvantage above will become an advantage. Call transaction immediately gives you messages back and you can react to it in your program. But the disadvantage is that, if you have several hundreds of transactions to run, running them from within the program can be resource crunching affair. It will hamper the system performance and you cannot really distribute the load. Of course, you have some mechanisms with which you can overcome this, but you will have to code for it. Also, storing the messages and storing the errored transaction data etc will have to be handled by you in the program. Whereas, in batch input session, your program's job is to just create the session, after that everything is standard SAP system's responsibility.
Ideally, you should do a call transaction if the resources are not a problem and if it fails, put the errored transaction into a session.
You can decide based on the data volume that your BDC is processing. If data volume is high go for session else call transaction will do.The call transaction updates will be instantaneous where as session needs to be processed explictly after creation.
Session Method
1) Session method supports both small amount of data aswell as large amount of data
2) data processing is asynchronus and data updation is synchronus.
3) it process multiple apllication while perfomaning validations.
4) in session method data will be updated in data base only after processing session only.
5) system provide by default logfile for handling error records.
6) it supports both foreground aswell as background process
in bdc we use FM ...
bdc_open_group " for creating Session
bdc_insert " adding transaction and bdcdata table for updating database
bdc_close_group " for closing Session
Call Transaction
1) Call transaction exclusively for small amout of data
2) it supports only one apllication while perfoming validations
3) there is no default logfile, We can explicitly provide logic for creating logfile for handling error records.
we can create logfile by using structure....BDCMSGCOLL
4) it doesn't support background processing.
5) data processing is synchronous and Data updation is Synchronous( default), in
this method also supports daya updation in asynchronus process also.
syntax:
Call transaction <transaction-name> using BDCDATA
mode <A/N/E>
update <L/A/S>
messages into BDCMSGCOLL.
BDC:
Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the process of transferring data from one SAP System to another SAP system or from a non-SAP system to SAP System.
Features :
BDC is an automatic procedure.
This method is used to transfer large amount of data that is available in electronic medium.
BDC can be used primarily when installing the SAP system and when transferring data from a legacy system (external system).
BDC uses normal transaction codes to transfer data.
Types of BDC :

Running APEX 3.1.2 and 4.0.2 on one server
We currently have a Solaris server running an Oracle 10g R2 DB with APEX 3.1.2 installed. Oracle Application Server 10g (Apache) is used as HTTP server. This server is used for development and UAT.
We want to upgrade to APEX 4.0.2. and first want to test this and then gradually upgrade our existing APEX applications. This means we need to run both APEX versions is parallel for a while. We created a copy of the development database, since you cannot have two different APEX versions in one database. But, out problem is the images directory that is used by APEX 3 and 4 in combination with the OAS MT. According to the installation/upgrade instructions you need to rename the existing APEX 3 images to be able to revert back to APEX 3, but that would mean our APEX 3 environments will stop working. We need to be able to run both APEX versions for a while on one server using one OAS MT.
How can this be achieved without having to install another OAS MT with it's own images directory?Hi,
you could create a second directory on the server and a matching alias in the dads.conf file and name it /i402/ (instead of the old /i/).
Then you install APEX 4.0.2 and specify /i402/ as image directory name when calling the installation script. If you already installed APEX 4 you can use a script named reset_image_prefix.sql to change the images directory used by the APEX Builder Applications.
For your created Applications simply set the image directory prefix in the Application Definition Page to /i402/ and you are good to go.
brgds,
Peter

Session method and call transaction methos which one is the sap recomonded
hi
PLease give me the answer to these questions.
session method and call transaction methos which one is the sap recomonded why .
2) if we want to maintain BDC program in all the systems.wt to d0Hi Revethi,
Here is the difference between the Session and Call Transaction method.
Session
Session method supports both small amount of data aswell as large amount of data
Call transaction exclusively for small amout of data
2) it supports only one apllication while perfoming validations
3) there is no default logfile, We can explicitly provide logic for creating logfile for handling error records.
we can create logfile by using structure....BDCMSGCOLL
4) it doesn't support background processing.
5) data processing is synchronous and Data updation is Synchronous( default), in
this method also supports daya updation in asynchronus process also.
Syntax:
Call transaction <transaction-name> using BDCDATA
mode <A/N/E> update <L/A/S>
messages into BDCMSGCOLL.
