Apex Improvements from 1.5 to 2.0

I'm putting together a solid business case for the benefits of moving our client from Apex 1.5 to Apex 2.0. (Think in terms of how an upgrade allows us to do more for our client).
I've been hunting around Oracle and the forums to find a list of the fixes/improvements/limitations that have changed since Apex v 1.5.1.00.12.
Our clients tend to have very large data sets which makes reporting very challenging due to the limitations in their version of Apex.
Some examples I've found in the Forums include:
- Increase in the LOV limit from 10,000 to 1 million.
- More than 60 generic report columns are allowed on a report.
- 100 Item page-limit has been lifted.
- CSV Export limitation of 10000 rows has been fixed.
- Improved Session State Protection (security is important to our clients)
Does anyone happen to have any material (whitepapers, webpages, etc.) that can help me in this endeavor?

I believe that from a client point of view, what Carl mentioned about " hooks for DHTML / AJAX functionality which if used right can greatly improve user functionality" is the most important thing regarding upgrade to the latest version. DHTML and AJAX allow you to populate/update items on your page without rendering it over and over again, prior to submit, and allow you more flexibility and more options then in previous versions. That can significantly improve your UI, friendliness and performance. For the user, it is much more important then a list of some technical improvements, that some of them has no bearing on his daily using experience.

Info : Migrating Apex Application from Non-SSO to SSO environment

This post is to share my experience while working on APEX. This may be useful to some apex developer.
If we migrate an apex application from a non-sso (i.e. http) to sso (i.e. https) environment, the flash chart doesn't work.
I found that in the source of a Flash Chart region, we use #HOST# variable to locate the swf file. The environment variable takes the correct path but with "http" as prefix. But to access application pages "https" is used. Because of which, the swf file couldn't be located by the application.
Work-around Solution : If I hard code the value i.e. the application path having "https" replacing #HOST# variable then the flash chart works fine. I couldn't found a way by which the #HOST# parameter value can be updated to take "https".
The same environment host other non-sso applications as well.
Any comments on this are welcomed.

Thanks for the reply.
As I mentioned earlier, by Non-SSO I mean "http" and by SSO I mean "https". This is because, before migration the application was accessible using "http" and now we have to use "https" alongwith SSO to access the application. I only want to highlight the Flash Chart issue with this migration.
The problem doesn't solves with your solution as I am getting correct instance/environment name with #HOST# but prefixed with "http" and not "https". Hence the application won't be able to locate the required swf file.
Even the workaround I mentioned is only feasible, if an application has only few Flash Charts. However, if there are large no. of Flash charts in an application, then it would be a tedious task to update all flash chart source either by an application item (as you mentioned in your post) or hard coding the path itself. Also, every new Flash Chart source needs to be updated by a developer to fix this.
A better solution is required by which the Flash chart source is not touched and the #HOST# variable for the application is updated to take the "https" prefixed to the swf file path.

It sounds like maybe 8.0.1 has downloaded onto your phone but not installed. You can check for it in Settings > General > Usage > Storage, Manage Storage. If it's there you should see it at the top of the list of apps. Swipe to delete it. 8.0.1 was pulled by Apple quickly after it was introduced due to issues and replaced by 8.0.2. Once it's deleted you should be able to download and install 8.0.2.

I just bought the AIrport Extreme to replace an older Linksys wireless g router. But I am still getting a fairly low signal, not showing much improvement from the previous router. What gives?

I too recently bought the Extreme to replace an old Linksys G and discoverd that the range of the new Extreme was surprising less than the Linksys.
Nothing had changed otherwise; both routers were installed in the same place (on floor, under a cabinet in the middle of my house).
I returned the Airport Extreme to Amazon and bought another (the latest version), and the same problem exists, i.e., I can't get a signal at the corners of my small home with the Airport, where I once could with the Linksys.
I'm puzzled, but think that difference must be that the Linksys has 2 large external antennas and the Extreme's antennas are mounted internally.
I've also noticed that Apple sells a wall mount for the Airport Extreme and am assuming this is to get the Airport up and out into the open in order to improve its 'send and receive' characteristics, no?
If your Extreme is hidden in a cabinet or under some piece of furniture, I suggest you move it into the open and see if this helps extend its range.

Calling Apex page from Oracle Forms

Hi,
I haven't managed to find a similar thread anywhere.
I would like to call an apex page from a form. The page is in an app that requires authetication.
I can able to open the page by using web.show_document but that only takes me to the login page.
How can I overpass the authentication by passing somehow the username and password?
Is there any similar or easier way to do what I am after?

You could try the BRANCH_TO_PAGE_ACCEPT URL functionality. There are a few threads on this subject - for example: Re: authentication with credentials from another domain? I haven't used this myself, but if you do a search on the forum for this, you may find other threads that can help.

Will upgrade to mac pro 2010 give huge improvement from mac pro 2006?

I asked in an earlier post but may not have been clear. Basically, if I upgrade to a new mac pro 2010 quad core 2.8 GHz (12GB ram) will it give me a huge improvement from a mac pro 2006 2.0GHz (with 5GB Ram) and thus reduce the need to render and the time it takes to render? My thoughts are that it will because the graphics card is much more powerful and has more memory and hence any FXplug effects will have better RT playback. Is this a correct assumption?
Or is this too difficult to quantify. Is it simply "You will see an improvement but..."
I mainly edit 1080 25p Pro Res.

Further test has astounded me. I installed my copy of Premiere Pro CS4 on the core i3 iMac. I don't use it on my Mac Pro. I only bought it for Encore CS4 (I had an old copy of Premiere from Windows that I used to upgrade).
I copied an avchd card to the iMac desktop. I opened the media in Premiere Pro cs4 and played it back at Highest Quality: it was smooth as butter even with transitions. There were 47 minutes of footage that I added to the timeline and exported out as AIC 1080 50i. This took 2 hours 20 minutes!
I know that this is far from the ideal: ie editing source files from desktop and rendering to the desktop on the system drive (something I would not normally do, but I did not have an FW800 external drive available). I don't like PPro to edit with and was using to compare to my Mac Pro.
The same clips card were on my internal raid 0 on my Mac Pro. I loaded them onto the timeline in Premiere Pro and it struggled at preview quality and the render to an external esata drive was showing in excess of 15 hours!
I am amazed. But this raises questions for me too. The core i3 is a 3.06 GHz cpu (hyperthreading but no turbo boost) and shows as four cores (two real, two virtual) in activity monitor. They were at 310% when playing back the avchd files. If I get the 2.8GHz Mac Pro there will be eight cores and turbo boost. Will this be faster than the core i3 in playing back footage and much faster in rendering? Or does the higher clock speed of the i3 mean that for editing it is better but will lose out to the Nehalem Xeon when rendering?
Translating these finding to an FCP context, might this mean that a rewrap of the avchd to h.264 for editing in FCP is possible? In some cases this might be preferable to transcoding.
I cannot get over how much better the core i3 performance is over the Woodcrest Xeons. This makes me wonder if the Nehalem Xeons are as good if not better?

How to call APEX form from OAF

WE upgraded from 11i to R12. In 11i we have Apex Forms hanging off Customer forms. The customer forms in R12 became self service/OAF.
We now need to figure out how to call the old APEX form from new selfservice Customer form
Can some one help me with this?

Move APEX Installation from one database to another one

My task is to move an APEX installation to a new one.
Exact: The customer wants to downgrade from Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition.
Database version is 9.2.0.8 (both), APEX version is 2.2.1
What I've done:
- Full database export (from EE)
- Delete EE-software, reboot server
- Install. SE-software, reboot server, create db
- Full database import
around 40 db objects are invalid after recompile:-(
2. try:
- create db (SE)
- Install. of APEX 2.2.1
- Import of the schemas flows_020200, flows_files and the APEX user-schemas
- recompile
all db objects are valid, but the APEX applications belongs to a workspace "unknown" so no workspace have access to its applications:-(
Has anybody an idea or a recipe for me?

Thanks for your post on this thread last Friday evening, May 2. I posted my message on Wednesday April 30, and after receiving no response after two days, we decided to go ahead with my planned migration on Friday afternoon. We completed it shortly after 5:00 PM (just six hours before you posted your response). Everything seemed to go well, but based on your expert opinion, we've decided to scrap the TARGETDB installation and redo the migration according to your recommendations.
It seems that exporting each Apex application individually from the SOURCEDB and importing it individually to the TARGETDB would be a laborious and lengthy process, but if Oracle provides no faster and more convenient alternative, then I guess this is something we’ll have to do.
However, this has sparked more questions….
Like I said in my previous post, we’re relatively new to Apex. When I mentioned exporting/importing Apex workspaces, I was imprecise in my terminology. I know you can export Apex applications from the SOURCEDB Apex installation and import them into the TARGETDB Apex installation using the Web based Apex Admin tool. But can/should you do the same with workspaces? Or do you recreate corresponding empty Apex workspaces on the TARGETDB and then import the appropriate Apex applications into them?
What would you suggest to be the best way to do this?

Can't install my Apex Applications from 10.2XE

Installation from 11.2 XE went without problems, but I had a problem importing my Apex applications from my old 10.2XE database.
According to the Installation Guide, 7 Importing and Exporting Data between 10.2 XE and 11.2 XE
2. Connect to 10.2 XE database as SYS user and run gen_inst.sql. This will
generate install.sql, gen_apps.sql and other .sql files. The files will
be generated in the folder containing gen_inst.sql.

1) When you export your application 100 from within Application Express from your old instance and you compare it to the one generated, are there any significant differences?
2) Can you export your application 100 from within Application Express from your old instance and import it back into the same (old) instance but with a different application identifier?

Open Apex page from a non-apex application

Hello,
I'm calling an Apex page from another (non Apex) application. The way it works is that you click on a map and a browser window is opened with a Apex data entry form. This way you can edit information about the object you clicked on in the map.
I got this working but what I'm trying to avoid is that you have to enter your logon credentials every time. I can't provide a session ID in the URL from the other application.
Is this possible at all?

Page 1 and 2 are normal, but rather empty, pages. Page 3 is the public page with the redirect proces.
First login (demo/demo_12) and notice the session ID.
Then try to redirect to page 2 through page 3
http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=9947:3::2
You get the login page again with a new Session ID.
Once you logon you get redirected to page 2 and have joined the previous session.
Is this the expected behaviour of your example? I was trying to get rid of the login screen the second time. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Cannot access APEX pages from other IP in the same network

Hi,
I installed APEX 3.0 on Oracle XE (Windows OS). The PC I installed has a static IP (no DHCP and DHCP servie is stopped).
I started the HTTP server and I am able to access the XE database home page and the APEX developer page and admin page. This PC has a static IP too.
When I tried to access the APEX page from another PC. It is not loading the page.
When tried using Internet Explorer it says "Internet Explorer Cannot display the page"
Please let me know whether I missed any configurations to the access the page from another IP.

Hi,
Most likly the cause is windows firewall. Try the following:
1 - from Control panel select windows firewall
2 - click on the exception tab
3 - Click Add port
4 - for name enter yhe name you want (APEX)
5 - For port number enter APEX prot number

Accessing an APEX page, from an external application, passing a parameter

Hi,
We are tring to allow users access to a suite of reports we have developed within an APEX application, from an external source. Ideally we want to embed a URL that when activated, would access the APEX page, but would populate the APP_USER so the full functionality of the report can be fully utilised (region access etc). I have tried serveral options, such as:-
f?p=193:4.::NO:193::APP_USER:MR036668
i.e App no 193, page 4 and trying to populate APP_USER with "MR036668" but get the folowing error:-
Error ERR-1002 Unable to find item ID for item "APP_USER" in application "193".
Can anyone help?
