i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • After migrating to new MBP have two versions of GarageBand

Just finished migrating to my new MBP from an older MBP.  I had the latest version of GB on the older machine.  After completing the migration, found two copies of GB on the new machine.  One is the latest version, 10.0.1 and the other is GB '11 (V 6.x.x).  Can I remove the older one without causing any problems with the lastest version?
    Thanks all

léonie, I am able to reinstall 6.0.5 from the app store. It says it's not available in the store but it will still let me download it. Not sure if it would be able to install it on a Mac that didn't come with it.
That is very good news, isteveus. Perhaps Apple support has changed the policy. It may depend on the country. I am seing this - GarageBand 6.0.5 is showing as installed, when I am viewing the AppStore, but I cannot view it, when I want to check the system requirements.  I get the "Item not available" warning. What happens, when you click the 6.0.5 icon?  When I trash GB 6.0.5 and reload the App Store, the "Install" button stays dimmed. I just tried again.
Congratulations to reaching level 5, by the way, isteveus! The new pentagon badge suits you!

  • Setup Assistant problems - 2006 MacBook to new MBP

I have a 2006 MacBook 1.83Ghz (A1181) running OS 10.7.5 and I am trying to migrate to a new MacBookPro via SetUp Assistant.
I use the 2006 MB to run a business.
My initial attempt at SetUp Assistant via machine-to-machine ethernet failed, hanging @ Less Than a Minute Remaining (Transferring Apps) for over 12 hours.
2006 MB has energy settings set to "Disk never sleeps" and wifi off.
I then tried SetUp Assistant via Target Disk Mode to the old machine, but the new MBP didnt like the FW400 to FW800 connection and did not recognize the source (TargetMode) disk.  I have an adaper to convert the FW800 cable (new MBP) to FW400 (2006 MB).  The cable works fine with other uses with the adapter.
I then tried SetUp Assistant via Time Machine backup, hanging @ Less Than 12 Minutes Remaining (Transferring Apps) for over 12 hours.
I then reformatted the new MBP drive various times, reloaded the OS from the Recovery partition and tried only migrating User files (not apps).  Still hanging.
I called Applecare and was instructed to go thru SetUp Assistant and create a new user (ie do not migrate data), update the OS to 10.8.3 then invoke Migration (not SetUp) Assistant.  I was able to copy over Users after another apparent hang of 6 hours.   At the end of the UserFile migation, it complained of not migrating some files due to incompatibility (Parallels).   This approach now left me with 2 users and Time Machine created a new backup (not leveraging my previous backup).  Apple says that I can still access the old Time machine backup, but Spotlight doesnt index it so I'd need to manually hunt thru backups.backupdb for files desired (not ideal!)
I went back to my 2006 MB and removed Parallels, and any other (stale) app that no longer works with 10.7.5 (represented by the circle-slash icon overlaid on app icon).  So another reformat of the MBP, OS re-install and SetUp Assistant run via ethernet leaves me hanging @ Less 17 Minutes Remaining (Transferring Apps) for over 12 hours.
Being that I am upgrading hardware to support a business, I want the new machine to be identical to the old with Time Machine with one user allowing me to use the existing TimeMachine data with the new machine (as mentioned here on Pondini: http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrationProblems.html )
Has anyone come across this challenge?  I have read thru the Message Boards here and have not tripped over an apparent solution.
I am more than happy to manually copy files over from old to new, but want just the one (2006 MB) user with existing Time machine working seemlessly on new machine in the end.
    Thanks in advance.
    RedFox

Yes - let's compare migration assistant/time machine to Carbon Copy Cloner. Migration Assistant is only useful to transfer files. Other than that, forget it. Craps out at "less than a minute to go" when trying to lay down an image. Better to use Recovery in Disc Utility or Super Duper/Carbon Copy Cloner to copy an image if you have multiple accounts, password-protected disc images, partitions. Seriously Apple, why do you have to suck at exection of something so simple and standard - laying down a disc image? Why even put people through your useless migration assistant? Oh right, we need to buy some additional cables to do so.

  • Mac App store problem after Mavericks install

I have installed Mavericks, 3 times now, on my MacBook Air. There have been a few hicups but the only one I have been unable to fix is the App Store. It will open, accept my user name and perform updates however it will not allow me to view or download new Apps. If I create a new user that user has full functionality. So the Maverick install has obviously done something to my Mac Store user settings. Has anyone any idea how I fix it?
    Thanks

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box markedAllow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use  another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • FaceTime problems on 3 brand new MBP 13 Retina, Apple has given in

    Hi All,
After recieving 3 brand new machines (MBP13 Retina) in Dec 2013 and Jan 2014, Apple does not believe they can deliver a proper working brand new machine. They also won't look into the problem and hope i can accept this faulty machine.
Is that what Apple is turned into? A company that doesn't believe they can fix their own machines? Or do they not care anymore about their customers and their product?
The person I'm facetiming with cannot hear me when we talk at the same time. My (3 brand new, but all 3 faulty) machines will mute me, so the other party cannot hear me. It is back to the walky talky ages again, 'over'.
Since I'm a great believer of Apple, I cannot believe they won't fix this problem and just keep on selling and delivering brand new MBP 13 Retina machines that don't work.
Does nobody at the Apple company care anymore, is there no company pride?

after a week of working on this problem the last straw was spending  3 hours being helped with this problem by 1mb.com after which time they asked me either to take out a years  support at £129 or pay for help from a better qualified technician! As I only received my IPad last week I am going to send it back tomorrow. why doesn't Apple respond when it is obvious from all the discussions that there is a problem? Considering the price of the iPad I feel thoroughly disillusioned and cheated as well as frustrated by spending so many hours to no avail. this was not the only problem I've encountered but it is the one I've wasted most time trying to resolve./

  • Problem Installing SSD in new MBP

Hi, I thought this was gonna be easy: installing a new Samsung 128GB SSD in the optical CD/DVD drive of my new 13" MBP. How wrong I was. I thought the H/W bit would be tough, but the S/W got me instead. What I did:
I left the original HDD (500GB) in the bay & put the Hardwrk's Adapter (& SSD) in the CD/DVD slot - tricky but no real problem.
Rebooted & installed CCC, used DU to format the SSD as a Single GUID partition with MAC OS (Journaled) format - seemed OK.
Used CCC to clone Everything on the old drive to the new one, again said OK. Checked the SSD in DU, repaired permissions, etc.
Reboot, Option key, boot from SSD - here's where things start going wrong. Takes 30s to boot, so cannot be an SSD :-(
In DU the original HDD is still root "/" mount point, so the reboot failed and it reverted back to the SSD.
Tried taking out the HDD & boot only from SSD - Mac fails to properly boot. Reset.
Considered that it might be a CCC problem, or maybe a DU error in formatting, so today:
Booted from MAC OS X ML Recovery USB stick, redid the partition step, but did not reformat the drive.
Reinstall ML fresh, was taking too long (c.90m) so I left it running, will check at lunch time...
Have checked here & on the net, and I do not seem to be doing anything wrong, this usually works for most people - any ideas?
I could try putting the SSD in the HDD bay, but it should work from the 6MB optical bay in a new MBP?
Any thoughts on what went wrong or what I could do to fix this would be most appreciated...

Yes, I thought of that (I was prepared). :-) So I put the new Samsung SSD in my PC to check the firmware version first (as you can't do this on a Mac), which was up-to-date, so nothing to do there. I hope this did not cause a problem with the disc (which I am beginning to suspect - ironic because I chose this disc for Mac compatability), as I set it to GUID partition on the PC ready for speed testing (which I then could not do).
Update: the OS re-install from the USB key failed, did not even look like a working drive this time (single folder red warning icon on it), and didn't come up properly on the Option Reboot list. Based on the above I went into the Recovery Partition from the HDD & did another reinstall from there. This time I changed the partition type to something else (Mac), then back to GUID single & reformatted it, Mac OS (J). It is busy doing the OS install, c.90m again, so will check tonight, but do not hold out much hope...
Only option I can see now is a H/W problem with the CD/DVD drive adapter, so will try one last time by removing this & swapping the SSD for the HDD then reinstall OS direct from USB key.
Should this fail I am all out of options, as the SSD is useless as a 2nd disk or external from the MBP. Only option would be to try to clone the OCZ Vertex III 120GB SSD in the PC onto the Samsung, use this in W7, and swap the OCZ into the Mac? Or just give up & sell it on ebay. :-(
PS: On reading other posts on (Smasung) SSD replacement for MBP HDD, I should note that I did NOT copy the Recovery partiton from the old HDD to the new drive, figuring the old disc would still be in the machine (as a data volume), so I could save a little space on the SSD itself, I was told this would not be a problem, any thoughts?

  • Does Migration Assistant move native apps like App Store, iTunes etc to a new MBP?

I want to replace my current 2010 13" MBP running Lion with a new 13" MBP 2.9 GHz (not Retina) running either Lion or Mountain Lion.  I want to make sure that Migration Assistant does not move the (recently) very buggy native apps on my current machine (App Store, iTunes, iPhoto) to the new machine.

  • FaceTime Problem After An Upgrade/New Number?

    Hi
Someone I know has upgraded their iPhone and had temporary number while their PAC code was used to change that temporary number back to their old one that they had had on their old phone.
They can be texted and called in the traditional manner on their original number now their temporary one has been updated, but their iMessage and FaceTime has stuck with their temporary number that they only had for 36 hours and now that the main phone number has been re-instated they can not be reached on FaceTime on that number, only on their temporary number that they no longer have.
How can they transfer their FaceTime number from the temporary one that they had just very briefly after getting the new handset. to their main number that they had before and have now?
    Thanks

Try logging out of the existing Apple ID with iMessage and FaceTime on the iPhone followed by logging back in with the Apple ID which should register the old phone number that has now been re-activated with the iPhone.

  • App store problem after updating OS to Mavericks.  Ended up deleting app store.  How do I get it back?

I upgraded to Mavericks.  When I tried to update my apps in the appstore, I was getting prompted to enter in a password for someone else's Apple Id.  I have no idea who this person is and I could not change the ID.  I was logged into the App Store under MY id but for whatever reason when i chose to update an app, I was prompted with this person's ID. I researched this and someone in a forum suggested deleting the app and reinstalling it.  I have app zapper so I zapped the app and I no longer have an app store..  I also have no way of getting the app store back.  Apparently, it's part of Mavericks.  I cannot even reinstall Mavericks because Mavericks is only attainable through the App store.
    I have a big problem don't I?
I recovered the files that app zapper "zapped" from my trash.  They are as follows:
One "app store" folder that contains a file called: updatejournal.plist
One "AppStore" folder that contains a file called: manifest.plist
    And a file called com.apple.appstore.plist
How can I get app store working again?
And then there's the issue with this person's apple ID.  How do I get the app store to purge this person's login?  My machine is an Apple Refurbished so perhaps the person who is attached to the store is the person who bought the machine new?  I have no clue.  I do think it's a huge security flaw on Apple's part to expose a stranger's login information
    Help is immensely appreciated.
    Thanks.

There are a few things you need to do.
    A.
Remove "App Zapper" according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again.
    B.
Deleting system components is never the solution to any problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
    C.
You installed a hacked app, originally from the Mac App Store. It contains the receipt for a different app, downloaded using an account that you don't control. You need to identify and remove the hacked app.
Important: The app you need to remove is not necessarily the one named in the App Store alert. For example, the App Store may prompt you to update "Angry Birds" or "Twitter," but the hacked app may be something else entirely. Don't make any assumptions about which app you're looking for. To find it, you must carry out a systematic search with Spotlight.
    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kMDItemAppStoreHasReceipt=1
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    2. In the Finder, press command-F to open a search window, or select
    File ▹ Find
from the menu bar. In the search window, select
    Search: This Mac
from the row of tokens below the toolbar. Below that is a popup menu of search criteria, initially showing Kind. From that menu, select
    Other...
A sheet will drop down. In that sheet, select
    Raw Query
as the criterion, then click OK or press return.
Now there will be a text box to the right of the menu of search criteria. That's where you enter the raw search query. Click in that box and paste the text you copied earlier by pressing command-V.
    4. The search window will now show all the App Store products that are installed. Compare those search results with the list of your purchases from the App Store. To see the complete list, you may need to unhide hidden purchases. If any apps were download from the App Store using other Apple ID accounts that you control, sign in to the store under each of those ID's and check the purchases.
At least one of the apps in the Spotlight search results is not among your purchases in the App Store. Move each such item to the Trash, after quitting it if it's running. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Empty the Trash.
Quit and relaunch the App Store. Test.
If you find these instructions confusing, ask for an alternative method.

  • App Update problem after updating to iTunes 8.1.1

Hello! The first time I opened iTunes after upgrading to v. 8.1.1, I saw that there were 13 App updates available; when I selected 'Applications' and then 'Check for Updates' at the bottom of the Applications screen, a message came that said "There are no updates available for the account __"; the account named was my account name, but with @me.com rather than @mac.com. I know that there are some updates available, as I've deliberately NOT updated several that I don't want the updated versions of.
Back to the iTunes Store screen, at the upper right appeared my proper account name, the @mac.com account. I clicked on that, producing a screen with my proper, mac.com account, and entered my password, which brought up all my proper account information; but no app updates were listed as available.
Then, checking my iPhone, the App Store icon showed 11 updates available; when I opened that, the screen stated that 'All Apps Are Up to Date".
So there seems to be a problem that has resulted from iTunes 8.1.1. I am reluctant to link my iPhone to this new version, as I fear what havoc might result.
    Any suggestions/solutions?
    Thank you!

I'm having the same problem. It started out with saying I have one app that needs updating, now it's up to two. I sync my phone nightly. I've downloaded iTunes again and when I ran the exe it asked me to Repair or Remove. I Repaired, rebooted and am still having the same problem. I'm also having sync issues with my calendar and Outlook. I'm restored my phone as well. Still having the same problems.

  • HD problem after connecting to new Mac Pro

Went to our first MUG meeting of the years tonight. And took along my Lacie 500gig firewire external H/D. This was going to be used to demo the new iTunes 7 app. The computer being used was a new Mac Pro duo core intel etc.
When I plugged the H/d in to the Firewire 400 socket on this machine it would not mount. So sadly the demo would have to wait for another meeting.
MORE SADLY.... when I returned home and tried to connect it to my 15" iMac it would not mount..... What has happened??
It is more than obvious to me that my hard-drive has been corrupted by trying to use it with Apples latest entry into the market.
I have swapped cords Ports etc. The drive does power up when I start the computer and sounds like it is going to mount... Profiler does not show it...
    any help would be appreciated...

Seems that I have a solution.... It would seem after some troubleshooting that the FireWire 400 port in no longer working.... why? I can only guess. The other FireWire 800 and USB 2 ports are fine.... Thankfully I am still in the warrantee window....
Let me say that this is the first and only problem I have had with Lacie H/D's....other than ...."Make sure that you initialize it before adding any files to it"... I know it is supposed to be Plug & Play with Mac, But I am betting it will think it is connected to a PC....unless you take the initializing step...

  • App Icons Mismatched after syncing up new 3Gs

Has anyone else had this problem. My apps are on my new 3Gs but some, not all, have the wrong icon. For example, my Remote app show the icon for a jigsaw puzzle app but says "Remote" under the icon. The app appears to work just fine. Same thing for my Kindle app -- wrong icon but the app works fine. Thoughts?

It may work for some. I tried this on the other thread as seen with other iPhones on 3.0...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2044341&tstart=0
Doesn't seem to fix it for me. Any fix that I've seen is only temporary and for some reason or another the icons revert back. The only trend I've seen is that generally the first 3-4 pages of icons are correct, with most after that being screwed up. Moving a screwed up icon, even after re-installation does not fix the problem however. Removing the App via iTunes or the phone and then reinstalling it via sync does not seem to work.
Any ideas anyone? This is truly frustrating.

  • ITunes and Audible compatibility after transfer to new computer

I've had a serious compatibility problem between iTunes and Audible eversince transferring to a new computer. This after iTunes and Audible worked seamlessly for two+ years on my old computer.
At first iTunes would not accept my Audible username/password, then after reinstalling and updating both iTunes and Audible Manager I received a "you cannot authorize any more computers for this account. You must deauthorize at least one other computer . ." error message. I've deauthorized, then authorized my computer twice in an attempt to correct whatever is causing this (two computers are automatically authorized when I've done this) but I still get the "you cannot authorize . . " error message whenever I try to import my Audible files.
I'm using an external HD (from the old computer)as my music folder location for iTunes, however Audible is downloading to my computer's HD. Can this have something to do what's going on? I've also tried disabling the firewall with no success. Have also made sure Audible and Apple are both "allowed" in Firefox's content. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

I would try copying over the tracks from your XP computer again as the files from the first transfer may be corrupted.
