App-V 5 SP2 client attempting to find/create file in the package store (outside of the PVAD)

Hi all,
Hopefully I'm not missing something screamingly obvious here but I've been at this for a while and can't work out how to get around it.
I've got an app that I've sequenced (App-V 5 SP2) and can run from the sequencer with no issues but when I publish and run it on my client test box, I get a series of errors pointing to there being missing files. Fairly common scenario so I turn on procmon
and see what it's trying to do/find and see that it's looking for a file directly under C:\ProgramData\App-V\PackGUID\VersionGUID and failing because the file it's looking for isn't there (nor should it be) and is present where it should be; under the C:\ProgramData\App-V\PackGUID\VersionGUID\Root\
(which is the install directory).
If I modify the permissions on the "VersionGUID" directory and add the file to this location then the executable finds the file but fails because it's expecting to find the rest of the applications files from the installation directory in the same
location.
I've tried packaging to VFS, packaging and installing to PVAD with the same results. The only way that I could get it to launch was by setting the directories under the VFS to Merge with the local files system, deleting all files in the package under the
install directory and copying the same file structure onto the test machine (This isn't really a solution though as we're talking about over 500mb of files).
What tricks do you guys use when you come across these sorts of problems? Hopefully this all makes sense!
Thanks
DT

Deetts,
I plan on spending more time to see if I can get any better information, but a few interesting points so far.
The software seems to install a driver.
It is odd I only got the driver warning when I sequenced a second time and actually launched the software while in capture, but I have seen that before.
Also, the software ACLs the program files\client dir with some pretty interesting (stupid) permissions.  It actually
REMOVES inheritance, and adds everyone full.
While this isn't a problem per se as under HF4 we can enable full VFS writes, it leads me to believe the software may be doing a lot of other bad practices, and it wouldn't surprise me if it assumed its own directory had full write rights to, and bombs if
it doesn't.  Depending on how it determines its own dir may or may not be an issue.  You will never have write access to the program data app-v dir, but you will under the VFS program files\client dir.
At any rate, I am going to spend a little more time with it, but just seeing what I have so far means it may not be the best candidate for App-V...but, don't ever let that deter you!  We have completed many packages that were not ideal candidates with
great success.

They are there as iTunes can't find the files. I get what you want to say. Try to remember if you had a hard drive or USB Stick containg Music? As removing it would cause iTunes to look for it. On a PC the iTunes apps and stuff are in Music>iTunes>iTunes Media

All Office applications will also try to open a temporary work file in the same location as the source file. This implies the source file directory also needs to be writable for this temporary file. Since the default HFS+ driver provides only read-only access, such temporary files will fail to open, and will cause the application to fail.
As a test copy the file you want to edit, say an Excel spreadsheet from the OSX file system to the C: drive on the Windows side and try to open it. If you look in this directory, you should see two files, the source and a temporary file. You may have to force the temporary file to be opened on a read-write file system, by manipulating the folder for temporary files.

  • IPod classic displays 'No music' after sync, HDD problem? Geschiedenis • Verwijder  So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn't find any files on the iPod anymore. H

So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn’t find any files on the iPod anymore. However when you look in the settings it displays that ~roughly 90 GB free space is available. Seen the fact that I had about 60 gigs of music this doesn’t seem like a coincidence and I think my music is still somewhere on the ipod but the HDD isn’t recognizing it anymore.
I’ve tried resetting it, and resetting it to factory settings, which didn’t work. When connected to a desktop it won’t be recognized by iTunes, it displays an error message that the iPod cannot be read and that I have to reset it to factory settings.
I’ve spent some time researching this problem yesterday and I ran into a myriad of vaguely similar problems didn’t really offer any help. Currently I’m thinking that formatting the iPod might work, and restoring the software afterwards. However this is a rather bold strategy so I’d like to consult you here first.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for the info, with formatting my iPod I managed to connect it to iTunes again.
However..in the page you linked to there is a section about how transferring large amounts of data can dump your library. That seems to be the problem in this case. It won't even allow me to transfer more than 2 gigabytes of music per sync, if I go higher it will dump everything again. Having over >60 GB of music in my library, this is disastrous to say the least.
Do you think that there is any other solution besides the method you mentioned involving Smart Playlists?

You can specify the path to the file as a system property
              eg
              java -Dconfig.file.location=./mydirecotry/myfile.txt com.test.MyApp

Does anyone know where the iWeb data files are located or what they are called?  I can't find them.  I looked in Finder for files named the same as my website, but found nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.

If you erased or replaced your hard drive since iWeb was cancelled, then they are gone. Otherwise, if you have maintained backups then check those.
Usually such files are in the /Home/Library/ folder or a sub-folder.
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • HT2531 How can Spotlight find a file in the Library (in an app's plugin folder)?

I'm writing a plugin for SketchUp that lives in SketchUp's plugins folder in the system Library.  Even when I put an alias of the plugins folder out on the desktop, Spotlight can't seem to find it (my plugin file).  I've learned the trick of using the option key to reveal the Library folder in the Go menu, but why does the file remain 'hidden' from Spotlight after I've drug an alias of its folder out to the desktop?
I also tried using Terminal to patch Hidden to NoHidden without reliable results.  Yuck.
Thanks for any help you can offer,
    John Trotter

To view system and hidden files, use the Finder (cmd-F) to find.
From the criteria popup menu, select Other...
From that list that pops up, find System Files and Visibility; check both so they stay in the menu.
When searching for system files or hidden files, use those criteria.

  • Numbers freezes when I attempt to open a file from the iCloud

    Hello,
My Numbers app for my iMac freezes when I attempt to open a spreadsheet file from the iCloud.  These same files open fine on my iPad, and I make sure to close Numbers on my iPad before I attempt to open the file on my iMac, but it makes no difference.  The app freezes, and I have to manually force stop the Numbers process.  Any help would be appreciated.

How do I get the dock to recognize the latest numbers version I have.
Go to the Applications folder, find Numbers 3 and drag it to the dock. It will then look like the lower icon here (the one with the 4 columns).
Another way is, if Numbers 3 is already open, to right-click the icon in the Dock and choose 'Keep in Dock' under 'Options':
You can drag the icon with the three columns off the Dock if you don't want to open Numbers 2 from the Dock.

  • Creating file in the client machine

    Hello All,
In my jsp page, am writing data from database to an excel file and I want this excel file to be created in the client machine. I checked in the forums but could not find an apt reply.
ie, when i click on submit button, i get the data from the database and put it in an excel file.
    any help would be appreciated.
    am realy struggling with this.
any link to previous posts regarding this would be very helpful.
    thankx a ton,
    arun.

you can't write a file from the server to the client. Such functionality would make it really easy to install virusses and such, don't you think? You can write the excel file on the server and then allow the user to download that file. This would mean writing the file to a webdir and then offering it as a link on a webpage.
Check out the apache website for jakarta POI, which allows writing (and reading) of excel files.

  • Cannot find MAIL files on the HD

I'd like to back up all my emails. According to 'help', this is to be found on HD = Library. But MAIL files are not there. Tried a search under MAIL and although dozens of files come up, not the ones want. HELP! Where is all the data stored?

Each users Mail files from Mail.app are stored in the Library folder in their Home directory. Open a window in the Finder and click on the icon on the left that looks like a house. This is your Home directory. Look inside the Library folder located here and you should see a folder named Mail.
That's the one you want to back up.

  • Finding Picture Files On The Macbook

I'm new to the Macbook and I'm unsure as to how I can go about attempting to locate where an image is stored on my system. When I go into the change desktop area I see an image displayed but I cannot seem to find where it is located on my hard drive. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

You can manually find picture files by searching using the term .jpg, .tif, or .gif. These are the most common types of picture files. Do this by going to Finder, then File > Find (apple + F). You can delete the files right from the resulting window.
You can also open the Find window and search for all images. Searching for images is one of the options that you can use; this option is in the box that says Any (the top right of the four boxes under the areas that you can search). Select Any > Images. This allows you to search for all images on your computer.
If you use spotlight for this search, you'll only be able to open the files.

    Hi,
go to System Administration -->Support --> Browse Deployment and browse to the directory ROOT/WEB-INF/deployment/temp
locate the corresponding par file and Download it to your local system. If you observe the file extension, it is "bak", because SAP Portal renames the archives after it deployes the par so that it will not deploy it again. Remove the file extension .bak and rename according to the naming standards of your organization. I would recommend you to use the same naming of the file, remove "sap" and use your own company name, like com.mycompany.portal.navigation.masthead.par.
After this, you can import this par file in NWDS (Netweaver Developer Studio) by selecting File --> Import.
A word of caution, the importing does not import the jar files in the private/lib folder of the project structure. So, copy them manually to the new project you have created.
When you see the project structure, you can find the related file in dist --> PORTAL-INF -->jsp -->
You can change this file according to your needs and deploy it back to the portal.
    create the ivew from par
    hope it works for you

  • TS1362 My iTunes has stopped playing - it will not progress. I have updated iTunes, and can't figure out how to find any plug-ins - can't figure out how to find hidden files on the iMac Finder.

How do I find hidden files on my iMac? My iTunes has stopped playing music and videos - the playbar does not progress, and it may be that there is a plug-in that is stopping it. How do I fix it?

Well, it sort of solved my problem. Now every time I start a lecture with sound, there is no sound, but the slides advance. If I go back to iTunes and turn on a cd, it plays the sound. If I then go back to the lecture, the sound goes on. So each time I start a slide show with sound, I have to turn on iTunes. How can I fix this?

  • Finding a file in the past?

At some time in the distant past, I had a file, say "foo.txt", in a given folder. In the somewhat more recent past, I deleted that file.
When I enter Time Machine viewing that folder and enter "foo.txt" in the search text field in the folder's title bar, it always says "Not found"; and yet, if I manually go back in time, I eventually find "foo.txt".
It's been a while since I've actually had to recover a file using Time Machine, but I could have sworn that searching would automatically take me back in time to view the folder on the last date the file was present in it.
If that's true, then why doesn't it seem to work any more? If that's not true, is there a way to search for a file in the past?

Paul, yes, if you hope to perform any searches within the Time Machine interface, Spotlight will have had to index the backup drive ahead of time. That is why we sometimes see "Preparing backup..." for so long on occasions. Spotlight is re-indexing the backup drive before the new backup begins.
Naturally, if you find that your backup drive, when connected to your Mac, is in the Privacy pane of the Spotlight Preferences, then no indexing will take place. A by-product of that setup is that you won't be able to search the backup drive for specific files and folders.
Another factor to consider is this: When you are in the Time Machine interface, each window you see cascading off into the distance represent a single snapshot of your Macs' hard drive. Except for the first window. That represent your Macs' state as it is "Today (Now)". If you type a word in the search box while in this "Today (Now)" window, you will only get results of items that exist on your Mac today.
Now, click on the window directly behind "Today (Now)". That represents that last successful backup which may have taken place up to an hour ago. If you type a word in the search box while in this window, you will only get results of items that exist when that last backup took place. Go back farther and you will only get results from that particular backup - not the results of every item ever backed up by Time Machine.
That's why the Mac OS 10.5 Help docs states, +"Use the arrows and the timeline along the right edge of your screen to browse through the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window. When you find the item you want to restore, select it and then click Restore."+
    Does that make sense? Cheers!

  • Finder creates file in trash which can not be deleted.

    Hi,
I am experiencing a weird problem after forcing leopard to reboot. The trash can icon is now always shown as full.
If I open the trash can in the finder there is a file named ␀␀␀␀␀.úÉ The strange thing is if i open the .Trash folder with a terminal and ls -al the folder is empty. Dragging the file out of the finder on to the desktop empties the trash, but as soon as i click on another finder window the file is back. DOH
Also if i do a getInfo on the file it disappears out of the trash only to reappear as soon as i click on another finder window. Opening the file with quick view shows the file name as null.null.null.null.úÉ.
Here is what I have tried so far to resolve this issue:
    - Systemshutdown
    - Verify on the Main HD with disk utility
    - Fixing Permissions
    - Dragging the file on the desktop
    - Clearing the trash folder on the command line with rm -R * (This throws an error message which is weird.)
Has anyone got any idea what else i could try, this is driving me nuts.
I also have TimeMachine and Fusion running not sure if that may be causing this issue.
I hope someone can help me.
    cheers
    Marcel
I have already tried the following:

Hi I managed to resolve my problem hope the following is of help.
As the problem occured after a forcefull shutdown it appeards that the Boot Camp partition was not unmounted correctly, this left a corrupt entry within the .Trashes folder on the bootcamp partition.
The corrupt file prevented me from deleting the folder. I natively booted into winxp and used a utility called delinvfile to remove all hidden mac os x folders (those starting with a .)
After that i booted back into leopard and the problem was solved.
I also found that unmounting the boot-camp partition would fix the problem this is what pointed me to the solution. It may be a good test to see if you have the same problem before applying the above fix.
The winxp utitlity can be found here:
