Apparent FileVault Problem

Has anyone else noticed a problem with FileVault? I thought that I'd give it a try a few months ago. And have started to notice some odd behavior. After it frees up unused space, some files are missing. Some of my preference setting are reset to the default for some applications (i've not checked all of the applications) like mail.app, dock and safari.

Hi Nils
No I have been using FileVault for 16 months and have not experienced any apparent problems it has run as advertised

  • To people who has Filevault Problem

I might had brain shortage last night. I turned on Filevault w/o doing any research. After restart my computer. I had problem login to my account. It took me all night until now. Finally, I solved it. I had been search with any related post, but none of them work.
After computer restart, I entered my password. It took 15 - 20 secs and return with message " you are unable to login "XXXX" account because filevault has an error."
I changed my Master Password, reset my account password. Verify Disk permission. nothing really help.
The way I solved this problme is
1.Login to another account with Administrator permission.
    2.Go to System Preference
    3.Go to Account
4.Delete the account you enable the filevault
5.After you click "-" sign, it will ask you with 3 opinions.
5-1. Save the account home folder in Disk Image.
5-2. Do not change the home folder
    5-3. Delete the home folder.
PLEASE SELECT Opinion 2 "DO NOT CHANGE THE HOME FOLDER"
After delete the account. Create a SAME ACCOUNT NAME with the SAME PASSWORD (Master Password)
Log out and Login with the account you just created. System will asked if you want to use the same home folder. Just click "YES"
After login,You will back to the original setting on the account.
Hope this will help people who stuck on filevault problem
DO NOT ENABLE FILEVAULT UNLESS YOU ARE READY FOR PROBLEM.

    Hey Fresh Blue,
I wanted to change my "short name" (the name that shows up on the home folder).
Do you think I can do what you did to change the short name and keep the contents of my home folder.
Delete my current account, and not delete the home folder, create a new account with a different short name.. then log on with the new account and use the same home folder?

My two month old iPhone lightning cable is suddenly corroded and not working. Any solutions to this apparently common problem on the horizon?

You bought a used iPhone. Amazon is not an authorized supplier of iPhones, nor are any of the 3rd parties that sell iPhones there.
You can make an appointment at the genius bar and have it looked at.
If you are very very lucky, it is still under warranty and it wasn't opened or otherwise tampered with before you bought it. In which case, Apple will replace it under warranty.
If it's not under warranty, they will replace it for $199.
If it has been opened or tampered with, they won't touch it.

  • LEOPARD -FILEVAULT- PROBLEM HELP!. PASSWORD PROBLEM?

Hello.. my friend installed LEOPARD upgrade today. Everything went OK, then he do the Softwware update and the re-start and when it went up, his MacBook Pro can't take his password. Some message with FILEVAULT problem came up.
He can re-installed Leopard again and save his data?

I solved my problem. In short: Manually decrypt your sparseimage, place the data in your home directory and disable filevault. Then login and enjoy! (And maybe enable FileVault again...
    You need:
    - An extra user with no FV enabled (admin)
    - An external disk drive with enough space to hold your home directory
    Here is what I did:
    1. Restore your Tiger setup from backup (you DO have one, don't you?)
    2. Log in to your FileVaulted account. Open Terminal
    3. Do "cd .. ; sudo cp -R -p johndoe /Volumes/ABig_ExtDrive/" (Assume your homedirectory/shortname is 'johndoe')
    4. Upgrade to Leopard
    5. Log into the admin account, connect the external drive
    6. Open Terminal
    7. Do "cd .. ; sudo mv johndoe johndoe_old" This renames your old homedirectory which has your filevault image. If you don't have enough space left, you can remove this directory / sparseimage by typing "sudo rm johndoe/johndoe.sparseimage"
    8. Do "cp -R -p /Volumes/ABig_ExtDrive/johndoe ." to copy your data back, non-crypted (you should be in /Users directory now)
    9. Type "sudo dscl . -delete /Users/johndoe HomeDirectory" to disable FileVault
    10. No reboot required, just log in to your johndoe account!
    (11. Remove the /Users/johndoe_old -directory)
You can verify #9 with this:
Your johndoe account should have this key, like this:
    [terminal begin]
    admin$ sudo dscl . -read /Users/johndoe/ HomeDirectory
    HomeDirectory: <home_dir><url>file://localhost/Users/johndoe/johndoe.sparseimage</url></home_dir>
    [terminal end]
..which means this account has FileVault enabled..
..and the admin account should not have this key:
    [terminal begin]
    admin$ sudo dscl . -read /Users/admin/ HomeDirectory
    No such key: HomeDirectory
    [terminal end]
    ..nobe, disabled.

  • Dreamweaver CS5 update apparently fixes Mac FileVault problem

Adobe has just released Dreamweaver 11.0.2 (build 4916), which is intended to fix the problem with running Dreamweaver CS5 on Mac OS X with FileVault enabled. Adobe Updater should automatically detect the update, and display the Adobe logo in the menu bar at the top right of the screen on a Mac. Click the logo, and select Adobe Updater. Alternatively, select Help > Updates in Dreamweaver.
I don't use FileVault, so can't verify that the update fixes the problem. Hopefully, it does.

I was getting the same error message on both Windows 7 64-bit as well as XP 32-bit.  When CS5 Dreamweaver installs (and several other Adobe CS5 products) it includes an older version of the Java 1.6 Runtime Environment which has known serious security flaws.  My university's computer security people got a report from Secunia PSI that I was running vulnerable software (an older version of Java) and demanded that I immediately upgrade.
But I do have the latest updates of the JRE installed, so I was puzzled by this.  When I looked at the Secunia report, the JRE culprits were installed in the Programs\Adobe folders as part of each application such as Dreamweaver (and several others).  So I removed the insecure JRE folders under those program installations and replaced them with the updated JRE folder from the Java installation (JVM for DW). Granted, this was a bit of a gamble since the registry was not modified, but I had not experienced any problems until I kept getting the installation failure reported here for the CS5 DW update failure with no explanation.
Realizing that Dreamweaver is still a 32-bit app even when running on 64-bit Win 7, and I was running the 64-bit version of Java 1.6 v20, I thought I should have used the 32-bit version of Java to replace the insecure version installed under Dreamweaver.  I tried that, as above, but the DW CS5 update still failed.
Then I tried to reinstall CS5 Dreamweaver only, which succeeded with the older insecure JRE which then immediately got flagged by Secunia PSI.  Furthermore, the Dreamweaver update still failed with no explanation.  I noticed that some of the previous Java files (by their dates) were still left in the DW installation JVM folder, after the re-install.  So next I removed the entire Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS5 folder, and did a clean reinstall of Dreamweaver CS5 only.  It was immediately detected again by Secunia PSI as have an insecure version of JRE.  However, this time when I did the Dreamweaver update, it succeeded (v11.0 build 4916) on my 64-bit Win 7 machine.
So the choice currently appears to get Dreamweaver CS5 updates with an older insecure version of the JRE or
not get Dreamweaver updates but be secure with the latest JRE manually installed.  My university security people will not tolerate the former
I don't understand why Adobe does not put the latest JRE's as part of their standard updates.  Moreover, why put them in the Adobe installations at all--which is causing this security problem of older insecure JRE's--and instead use the main Java installation on the user's machine (and if absent, require users to install Java), if Java is really needed.

  • Personal File Sharing + FileVault = Problems?

    Hello, sorry my poor english.
I have enabled 'Personal File Sharing' and I have a small index.html file on my 'Sites' folder.
When I try to check my webpage using the supplied link...
    http://localhost/~MyUserName/
I get this error (403 Forbidden):
You don't have permission to access /~MyUserName/ on this server.
so I checked Apache's Error Log and this is the info I have got:
(13)Permission denied: access to /~MyUserName/ failed because search permissions are missing on a component of the path
I have already run 'Disk Utility' and repaired all permissions but still no go.
Could it be because I have FileVault enabled on this account? If I create a user and leave the filevault off, the whole thing works just fine! I would like to keep my setup as it is now but to be able to view my pages locally. Is there a work around this problem between the Apache server and the FileVault?
    Thank you.

    Problem solved.
What I did was to change the permissions to ~MyUserName by control-clicking it in the Finder, choosing Get Info from the menu which appears, looking at the Ownership & Permissions section and setting the Others item to Read Only.
But I've learned something interesting, I can only change the 'Others' field on ~MyUserName by control-clicking on ~MyUserName from Finder's left menu! If I do it from Macintosh HD, then Users, then control-clicking ~MyUserName icon, all options are grayed out (doesn't make much sense, I first thought it was because I have FileVault enabled).
    Now everything is working.

  • Problem Adding Audio to iMovie (Filevault Problem?)

Ok... I made an iMovie project when I returned from a trip.  I then turned on Filevault in Lion for full disk encryption (I've been waiting for this feature because I need it for my business).  I went back to make some edits in my video... and iMovie is now behaving differently.  When I add a song from iTunes, it won't play... not even a peep.  I can move and adjust the songs currently in the video but any new tracks get silence.
I can play the songs in iTunes and even in the lower pane of iMovie... just not in the video itself.  Is this a problem with iMovie or is Filevault causing this?  Anyone know how to overcome this?

Update... I turned off Filevault.  No change.  Added iTunes tracks still don't play.

  • Filevault problems

    Hi all,
    I've got a PowerBook 1.67GHz PowerPC G4 with MacOS X 10.4.10.
It has worked without any problems for a long time. A couple of months ago I turned on the security system 'Filevault' and also set it to use 'secure virtual memory'. After that, my applications stop working one after the other.
First out was Microsoft Office that stopped working just a couple of weeks after turning on Filevault, now I can't open any Office application (including Entourage), they all just crasch after the icon has bumped a couple of times in the toolbar. The error message says 'Microsoft Word can't be started because of a shared library error...' You get the picture, not much info useful to someone not working at Apple there..
The next application to fail was iTunes, quickly followed by Quicktime. When I try to start iTunes I don't get an error message, nothing happens, the icon just bumps a couple of times in the toolbar and then goes dead.
Next up was MSN Messenger, followed by Skype. Yahoo IM still works though.
And now recently, Firefox. Whenever I for example click an email in Gmail, Firefox crasches.
Now realising that Filevault is the cause of all these problems I first turned off 'secure virtual memory' under security settings, that didn't change anything. Then I tried to turn off Filevault but got the info that it needs an additional 4GB disk space to make a copy of my home folder. I currently have about 10GB free disk space on my drive... Have moved all music and stuff like that out of my home folder to reduce the space of the encrypted file image, but after getting rid of about 2-3GB of files in the home folder, Filevault still says it needs 4GB more free space... It doesn't seem to do any new calculation when the size of my encrypted home directory but just says it needs a constant 4GB of additional disk space.. and yes, I have restarted the machine and Filevault has done the stuff it do everytime you shut down.
Please anyone, what is going on here? Is Filevault some beta software released without any quality controls even though it can destroy your entire system and you can't uninstall it?
I'm going crazy over this, soon I don't have any apps that work anymore
Many thanks in advance for your views on this.. Hope my browser doesn't crasch when I send this post.

It is very clear that FV has caused massive problems with my new MacBookPro system.
BTW xenofish, you should always remove "old Database" folders after rebuilding your Entourage or Outlook e-mail program. If your machine is slow you should run Disk Repair and even an independent defrag program such as "Disk Warrior."
I have moved megabytes out of the "home" folder in order to turn off FV. That was finally successful.
Now, the new MacBookPro will not recognize another MB laptop nor a backup drive—not even in Utility mode. This means I cannot backup my data unless I use DVD—DOZENS them—which will take forever.
The computer constantly has "permission" problems and will not sleep nor shutdown. Often, Safari quits. So does Word. Other programs hang. I cannot force quit programs. Thus, I must force-reboot. I am very nervous that the system will completely conk out before I can back everything up unto the DVDs.
Yet, disk repair claims everything is OK. I have tried everything to fix this. I am not a neophyte with software. I suspect that this is now a hardware issue. Fortunately, the MBP is still under warranty. But, it is a Holiday weekend. So, I can't take it to be fixed until next week. This is my main work computer. Having to install software and manually transfer data on the other MB instead of using Migration Assistant is simply unacceptable!
I am very dismayed that Apple does not have a pop-up window to warn people about FV and its dangers. Clearly, there are postings of FV destructive power all over this website and indeed the net.
I am tearing my hair out. After years of owning Apples—this is a first. I have wasted almost a week in this.

  • FileVault problems in Yosemite

About 4 days ago, several minutes after login, my system would lock up.  It did not matter what I was doing, the rainbow circle would appear and stay until I held down the power button and powered it off.
Subsequent powering on, the system would freeze at login about half way through a status bar.  After the third restart attempt, I plugged the laptop in and left it for over 14 hours, it never logged in.
This is a 3 week old, Macbook Pro 15"
I restarted it the hard way twice more and was able to log in, the status bar was still there, but it moved pretty quickly.
I got a message telling me I had shut down the system incorrectly.
I had this issue every day I used the laptop since 4 days ago.
I found an article about turning off the filevault, I did this.  Now when I log in, it does not display the status bar, it logs in right away and I have not had the same issue since turning off the filevault.
FYI, I even reloaded the laptop and the issue did not go away for even one minute.  Only turning off the filevault worked.
I do NOT want to leave filevault turned off.  I tried turning it back on after allowing the disk to decrypt, and the problem happens again.  I tried resetting permissions and then decrypted and tried to re-encrypt, same problem.
Anybody know what the problem is?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.

  • Disable old filevault problems

I think this new version of lion is a total disaster. For many reasons. Performance, hfs + agggg ...
Regardless of my considerations, we will address a specific problem:
    FileVault (old)
I used FileVault in Leopard (unfortunately).
    Install Lion....
I want to disable the old FileVault.
The first time I try, I had 40GB free.
Lion was to inform me that 20GB free to disable it.
Then delete files and free up more space. With 70GB! free.
Try again, now says he owed me more than 13GB free!
It seems not working correctly calculator Lion!
and so far that I have 103GB free and still gives me inconsistent messages to free space.
Deputy screenshots (I could not take earlier). Where release as 2GB and then asks me more space!.
    As corrects this error?
I turn off the **** old FileVault?
    Buy a 100TB disk?
I put a robot to remove and test 10 days straight?
I use macbook pro (2011) and sata 2 samsung SSD (256gb).

    ooooooo
FINDER shows the free space correctly.
    Disk Utility does not.
    I restart 3 times.

  • Serious filevault problem, delay, pls read & help

Hi, apologies for the long message but my problem is really a trouble over a month or two! Here's the cause: My battery was exhausted (because of using studio program required to be a lot on power adaptor), put my mac on sleep for a couple hours, then opened to shut down but cos of battery was with X symbol, it suddenly shut down. Next time tried to log in to my admin account -was the only account on mac & with file vault on cos of my work-but displayed msg "you can't log in to your account at this time". Master password lost note & didn't try over once to write in case of lock(failure). I did my homework here & then did the following but nothing solved my problem:
    1. reset admin pass by root, made another admin account, then changed original admin account password. When logged in ,noticed there was a sparse image of my home folder. I tried to open it via disk utility, displayed msg " are you sure to open, may damage your system", clicked open, then displayed msg "no mountable file systems". I had a strong belief my data hadn't gone for good.
    2. Also tried method of how to repair or verify your home folder, from utilities, users described changed permissions etc, nothing.
    3. On disk utility I tried & changed the sparse image to read/write one no compressed, still the same disk size of data but again when opening displayed msg "no mountable file systems".
4.By the way I verified & my HD had a minor repair so I did repaid to HD as well.
I deleted original admin user, recreated it again with same name & password.
I did also archive & install just in case of minor repair corrupted anything & preserved my previous system.
5.Cos my HD is 120GB couldn't turn off vault, so I saved sparse image to external disk, deleted from mac so to turn off filevault, then copied sparse image, same procedure, zero result.
    6. Turned on filevault again, tried to reopen sparse image and/or converted one, nothing same message.
    7. Last effort, to turn off filevault-notice sparse image is 76.5GB- had to remove items to save somehow disk space I moved applications I didn't use to external disk, even previous system so 19GB were available but not enough.. Then I moved everything back to original place & repaired the disk again.
If I erase & install all over again Tiger & recreate the same admin account, then turn on, off filevault??
I will upgrade to leopard or snow leopard, it'll be easier somehow to open a sparse image then?
You are my last attempt for solution, as I said my HD is 120GB, I've said every personal data on external disk, is there anything left to open or try otherwise to turn off filevault or no trouble cos my data are gone for good so to give up & go on?
I can't waste more time to it, really delays my work, can you help me?
    Thanks anyhow.

Were these in the things you tried?

  • After Update ITUNES Won't Open, Apparent Quicktime Problem, PLEASE HELP

I Have recently updated my Itunes, after installation of the updates I was unable to access itunes due to a problem with Quicktime. After trying to repair quicktime, with no luck, I have uninstalled (following Apple’s support system). There were two programs labelled “Apple Application Support”, one allowed me to delete and the other older one didn’t delete and came up with the prompts below, so I just installed itunes/quicktime again. The same response happened when trying to open itunes. So I followed Apple’s support system and deleted all I could again. What was left is below, any help would be extremely useful.
In “Uninstall or Change a Program” of windows 7, I was unable to delete Version 1.1.0 which is 32.3 MB installed on the 03/03/2010 of the Apple Application Support.
*When deleting it comes up with a box that says:*
+The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.+
+Click ok to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package ‘appleApplicationSupport.msi’ in the below box.+
    C:UsersSeanAppDataLocalTempIXP722.TMP
I could only follow the path to the “Temp” part …\IXP722.TMP does not exist in that folder.
_Any Help with this problem would be Greatly appreciated._

This kind of problem often responds to using the Microsoft Installer cleanup utility. Here is a method:
    == uninstall with cleanup ==
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime (the one without iTunes)
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Save the files on your PC.
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program. The installer doesn't give any message to confirm the installation.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
(To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install)
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista and Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
*If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry*, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
If you don’t see an entry for one of the programs that did not uninstall, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers e.g. 7.x for Quicktime or 1.x for Bonjour.
    restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
    If it does, install iTunes.

  • In trying to install epson software in my powerbook g4, it states that I do not have admin priveledges.  In all other uses, I have admin priv.  Without the epson driver, nothing prints properly. Epson says it is a mac problem. Have had filevault problems.

    Thanks for all help.

The Epson drivers need to be installed from an administrator's account and not just have a standard user supply administror's credentials.  I suppose it is possible that Epson's installer gets confused by FileVault on this account.
Try creating a new account and allow it to administer the computer.  Don't turn on FileVault for that account.  Install the print drivers from the newly created account.  You can then delete the account or demote it to a standard user account as you wish.

  • Apparent Permissions problem

I have a new iMac 27" which of course came with Yosemite and has been updated through Software Update.  I have a disk drive attached, which used to be attached with no problems to my previous iMac, running 10.9. Whenever I run a program that wants to write a new file onto that drive, or even when i try to change the name of a file on that drive, I get an error. For the rename, the error is -8076.
I have observed that the drive, according to Cmd-I, is locked. Even if I unlock it and close the cmd-I window, it becomes locked again. Also the folder in which I want to have my application write a new file, or the one in which I want to alter a filename, is locked.
What I want is to be able to have full access to everything on that drive when I am logged in as the (admin) user and get beyond these hassles.
The permissions section for the drive itself shows:
    imagebg (me) Read and Write
    staff   Read and write
    everyone read only

In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-C, or select
              Go ▹ Computer
from the menu bar. A window will open showing all mounted volumes. Select the one in question and open the Info window. What is shown as the Format in the General section?

  • Too little free disk space (FileVault problem)

I've recently been downloading and/or deleting fairly large files, and FileVault hasn't been offering to clean up my home directory on reboot. This means my computer has 276.9 MB of free disk space - not an ideal situation. I'd very much like to just turn off filevault at this point - I'm nothing but unhappy with its performance - but, of course, I don't have the free disk space to do so.
Is there any way to force filevault to allow me to recover disk space?

Do you have any files you and delete (trash) manually to make room, such as old iPod Software and iSight Updaters?
Or, at least backup some files to a CD and DVD that you don't use that often?
Do you have "Software Update" set to "Install and Keep Packages"?
You can safely remove these (backup) these packages as well to make room.
Do a search on your hard drive for any ".dmg" or ".pkg" files and see what turns up.
