AppendChild converts XML tags to HTML entities?!

I am working on an e4x statement. It is supposed to convert an XMLListCollection to a plain XML object. It ran without errors, but the destination object stayed blank. During debug I watched the variable value and found that as soon as the XML object ran the .appendChild command, all the appended XML content had its < and > characters replaced by &lt; and &gt;  which I can only assume killed the XML and caused my new object to remain empty.
xmlTreeContents.appendChild(_modelListManagerTreeData.xmlTreeData);
xmlTreeContents is the XML object, _modelListManagerTreeData.xmlTreeData is an XMLListCollection.
A quick search turned up someone else with the same problem: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2540414/flex-3-xml-remplacing-by-lt Unfortunately  no one answered him, and I can't find another reference to this issue.
Has anyone here seen this problem, and can give me direction on what to do to solve it?
Thanks.
Paul

I don't have a clue what is going on, but I found a way around it:
I was initially using
xmlTreeContents=<treeContents></treeContents>;
xmlTreeContents.appendChild(_modelListManagerTreeData.xmlTreeData);
and that caused the &lt; &gt replacements.
Then I tried this and it works perfectly
var f:String="<treeContents>" + _modelListManagerTreeData.xmlTreeData.toXMLString() + "</treeContents>";
xmlTreeContents=XML(f);
Still confused, but hopefully this workaround can help someone else.

  • Create an XML Document with HTML Entities?

    I'm writing a program that uses SAX to parse an XML document and generate XHTML from it, but I would like the XML document to allow HTML entities, of course, in the XML markup.
    Each time my parser gets to any entity at all it dies reporting an undefined entity.
    Is there any way I can refer to the HTML entity DTD or perhaps, in my own DTD, copy and paste the HTML entities? How would I make a reference like this in my XML document?
    Thanks

    Seems to me you would just put something like<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"
            "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd">before your root element. Or whichever DTD you actually want. I found out about them here:

  • Convert XML payload to HTML form data in Receiver HTTP Adapter

    Hi,
    I want to make a HTTP request ( Receiver HTTP Adapter ) to a servlet where I need to send the payload in HTML form format ( name=value ). As per the help document:
    A typical HTML form comprises named fields. When transferring a completed form to the server or a CGI program, the data must be transferred in such a way that the CGI script can recognize the fields that make up the form, and which data was entered in which field.
    The plain HTTP adapter constructs this format using a prolog and an epilog
    Has anyone done this before? I looked through all help documents and forums but in vain. I can resort to Java Mapping to do this but I do not want to re-invent the wheel if I can do it easily using HTTP Adapter Configuration. Please help.

    Hello,
    For converting xml file to html, we could refer to the way shared in the following thread which uses an XSLT stylesheet to transform the XML into another format using the
    XslTransform class.

    You can read both an XML and a well defined HTML document, using an XML parser. Although some HTML docs aren't well defined, ie. they don't strictly have matching begin & end tags, so an XML parser might reject them.
    Check out http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/ for Java interfaces to Ms Word functionality. It's basically a wrapper to the Ms Word COM objects.

  • Recordset xml export WITH html tags

    Hi there,
    I am trying a rather simple thing (I hope) but cannot figure it out how to do it.
    I created a dynamic xml (.php) file using the export recordset as xml behaviour. The generated xml works fine when I use spry to display it. The downside is that html tags are converted to something like this (I understand that these are the greater then and lesser then signs used in html):
    <strong>fringilla</strong>
    In the html document where I use spry to display this xml, the < etc are converted back to <  and >, but the html is not rendered.
    I tried cdata, but somehow cannot get this to work. I also cannot get dsSpecials.setColumnType("quote_tekst", "html"); to render the xml as correct html.
    Can someone tell me how to do this? Database and xml are both utf-8.
    Kind regards and big thanks in advance if you can help (it is really appreciated ;-D),
    Ben

    Sorry about that, don't know what happened in that last post..formatting I guess, here's the whole reply - xml enclosed w/ a pre - thanks again.<br /><br />Hi Günter,<br /><br />Thanks so much for the info.  I have been diligently trying to use CDATA and read the generated XML, but still I'm not seeing the HTML text rendereed in my detail section.<br /><br />The XML is setup from my mySQL data as:<br /><pre> <br /><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><br /><CurrentSpecials><br />     <special><br />          <name> Caribbean Sun </name><br />          <detail> <h1>special deal!!</h1><p style="color:#00f;"><strong>Join us</strong>!</h1> </detail><br />          <expire> 2007-08-31 00:00:00 </expire><br />          <rating> highest </rating><br />     </special><br />...<br /></pre><br />and I want the detail to render in my div (or I'll add a table/textarea...) as the html indicates.  I'm not having any luck w/ using CDATA for it - it's probably just me - I'm just starting out with this stuff.  Any pointers in the right direction? I'm getting the detail as {dsList:detail} and somehow need to say - this is html.  I've tried using javascript and php to render it.<br /><br />I could I guess just echo the detail on a mouseclick without a spry but didn't want to have to do all the implementation myself - I wanted to take advantage of dreamweaver's functionality! <br /><br />Thanks so much for looking at this - any help is so much appreciated!!

  • Embedding inline HTML data in XML using the mx:XML tag with &lt; and &gt;

    What is best practice for embedding HTML within the
    <mx:XML> tag? Programmatically, I can implement this
    successfully:
    [Bindable]
    public var xmlDP:XML = <component data="&lt;" />;
    However, I get the following error if I try to store the same
    data inline in an mx:XML tag, as such:
    <mx:XML id="xmlDP">
    <component data="&lt;" />
    </mx:XML>
    Error #1095: XML parser failure: Unterminated attribute.
    If I change the MXML tag as follows, it works fine:
    <mx:XML id="xmlDP">
    <component data="&amp;lt;" />
    </mx:XML>
    Unfortunately, I also can not source the mx:XML tag to an XML
    file which uses &lt; or &gt; codes, as it yields the same
    results. This leads me to believe that the <mx:XML> tag does
    not support the special character codes for < and >, but why?
    Incidentally, this code also gives a 1095 error:
    <mx:XML id="xmlDP">
    <component data="&#0060;" />
    </mx:XML>
    This is causing an issue with my source data as it is not
    hand typed into Flex, and standard XML supports the &lt; and
    &gt; codes. I have tried a full HTML string, as shown below,
    but this also generates the error:
    <mx:XML id="xmlDP">
    <component data="&lt;b&gt;Test&lt;/b&gt;"
    />
    </mx:XML>
    Many thanks for any input you may have!

    I’m generating the XML source file with
    Microsoft’s XML Notepad 2007. It will encode invalid special
    characters automatically. My understanding is that this is the
    proper way to handle the less than symbol in a XML string, that is
    to say using the &lt; code.
    With respect to the escape and un-escape methods, I am able
    to successfully implement these in AS, but not in MXML. This makes
    sense considering they are AS methods, but I was hoping to be able
    to do something like:
    <mx:XML id="xmlDP">
    <component data="escape('<');" />
    </mx:XML>
    This gives the following compilation error:
    The value of attribute "data" must not contain the '<'
    character.
    As does using the escape character as such:
    <mx:XML id="xmlDP">
    <component data="\<" />
    </mx:XML>
    Below is an example of what the escape character may be used
    for in AS:
    var myString:String = "\"";
    trace(myString);
    // result: "
    Likewise, I can escape the < character as such:
    var myString:String = escape("<");
    trace(myString);
    // result: %3C
    <mx:XML id="xmlDP">
    <component data="%3C" />
    </mx:XML>
    trace(un-escape(xmlDP.@data));
    // result: <
    As you can see, using %3C and unescaping in AS will yield the
    correct result; however, this is not a practical method of
    representing the data in MXML as I would have to write an AS method
    to un-escape the XML string anyway, so I might as well just store
    the data in AS to begin with. I was hoping for a way to source an
    mx:XML object, without having to load it into ActionScript
    manually. Here’s an example of the functionality I would
    expect:
    <mx:XML id="xmlDP">
    <component data="&gt;" />
    </mx:XML>
    trace(xmlDP.@data);
    // result: >
    Only this does not work for the less than symbol. I’m
    assuming at this point that this is a bug in the Flex compiler.
    Thanks again for your help troubleshooting this one!

    The text box that reads this info renders the content as html; does
    anyone know how to go about putting an html tag in an xml tag so

  • HTML encoding of XML tags

    Hi ,
    I am using openSAML and passing an XML document as a string to the SAMLAttribute.

  • Can't use HTML in XML tags anymore?

    I've noticed with 1.1 that HTML that worked in an XML tag in
    1.0 no longer displays. Spry seems to be taking what is in the tags
    as a literal string. For the most part, I've been able to work
    around this, however, I'm running into some issues now where there
    are tags that are empty because a certain product just has nothing
    to go in that tag. When that happens, it is being displayed on the
    page as:
    <td></td> and the style I'm calling on all
    <td>'s (a bottom border) doesn't show since there is nothing
    in the tag at all. I tried just putting a space, but white space
    (when there is nothing but whitespace) is ignored and putting
      results in the XML not loading correctly. &amp;nbsp;
    results in " " showing up in that <td> whereas in
    1.0, it would've been a non-breaking space.
    I guess what I'm asking is if there is a way to still get
    HTML to display correctly or if there is some sort of workaround
    for cells that end up being blank?

    I completed deleted the old way, so I have to recreate this

  • Html tag as xml tag value?

    Hi,

    You can either use > and < for < and > to get something that appears to be an html tag, or you can use a CDATA section.
    It partly depends on what you plan to do with that content.

    Can any one guide me and let me know whether it is posible to do with Indesign, if so let me know in case if I am missing anything in importing xml and get required output.
    Thanks in advance. Waiting for reply ASAP.

    Possibly your expectations are too high. ... Scratch that "possibly".
    XML, in general, cannot be "rendered". It's just an abstract data format. Compare it to common markup such as *asterisks* to indicate emphasized words -- e-mail clients will show this text in bold, but InDesign, and the vast majority of other software, does not.
    To "render" XML, HTML, MathML, or LaTeX -- you seem to freely mix these *very* different markup formats, unaware of the fact that they are vastly different from each other! -- in the format you "expect", you need to apply the appropriate software to each of  the original data files. None of these markup languages are supported natively by InDesign.
