Apple Configurator restoring backup fails

Hi everybody,
I got an issue.
I updated one of my colleagues iPhone to iOS 6.0 after backing it up with Apple Configurator. Trying to restore the backup, all I get is an error message.
com.apple.mdk.ams-error.domain-Error 3
The thing is that we do not have another backup to fall back to (other than the .iosdevicebackup). Is there any way to restore the backup?
I'd much appreciate any help on this.

Running into the same problem here when trying to do multiple iPhones through the configurator (update and restore from backup) - the phone's name had been physically renamed on the device itself but still shows the old name on the configurator - makes me things that it's something wrong with the program???

  • Apple Configurator - restore failed

I work in an educational institution.  I want to be able to set up one ipad, back that up using configurator and then restore that backup to all my other ipads.  I have updated all ipads to IOS 6.  I update all apps on one machine and put them in the folders that I want.  I created a profile that has the network login information and a few restrictions.  I backup the ipad that I have configured and then try to have it restored to the other ipads.  I get either restore failed or profile not verified. Either way, the apps are not on the ipad I am trying to restore to.  I have legal copies of all apps, some bought through the volume purchase plan and many free apps.  When the restore fails it is because it timed out.  Any suggestions?

I'm the IT tech at our University's library and we have 20 iPads surpervised.  i'm having this problem too since the iOs6 update.  I've tried to pinpoint a specific faulty application but found out that when I get to a certain number of icons (I tried with an app and with a web clip) the backup restore is failing.
If I click on the iPad's power button as soon as the screen shuts off when it shouldn't, the restore process finishes normally and the iPad can be used normally and there's no app missing.  If I wait for the timeout (yellow error icon and restore failed message) with the iPad still connected to the MAC and I power on the iPad, Apple Configurator detects the iPad and restarts the restore cycle but always hangs at the same step.
The only way to get past this is to stand next to the iPad when in restore mode and press the power on button for 2 seconds at the step where you should see the Apple logo and the progress bar.  This is really annoying and I was hoping for a fix in Apple Configurator v1.2.1...
Please tell me if you find a workaround or a fix...

  • Apple Configurator - Restore failed- is there a fullproof workflow?

    Hey all,
I have had to switch out machines in which I am running configurator off of. I have up to date versions of IOS installed on the machine and devices. I have the latest version of apple configurator installed as well. I am installing close to 150 apps on iPad's and I have to put everything in to folders. As far as I know there are only two options for doing this.
    Option 1
Do it through iTunes (The easy way)
    Option 2
Load all the apps on an ipad using configurator and to drag all the icons with your finger and make folders (the hard way)
I went ahead and made a master ipad image in itunes and then realized when I went to supervise an ipad that everything would be gone (Doh)
I have since SUPERVISED an ipad first and then went in to settings and disabled auto refresh. I then took this supervised ipad and brought in to itunes.
I placed all of the apps on the device and moved them in to a folder. I have created a perfect ipad image again and created a backup in configurator.  No matter what I do I can't get a backup of an ipad to succseffuly restore in configurator. The ipad goes through the restore process but it turns off and doesn't turn back on. Is there a fool proof workflow out there right now?
I haven't tried Option 2 as it is a painstakingly slow process. But it does leave Itunes out of the equation so would that help?

Well it appears this is no more than the problem most everyone is having with to many application icons...

  • Where does Apple Configurator store backups?

I'm trying to identify where Apple Configurator store the individual backups of iPads etc.
I've had a backup fail and I while I have deleted it from within AC I haven't gained any space back so would like to go and manually delete the backup.

How to import an iPad backup from one apple configurator to another
    1) connect a properly set up iPad to its source computer, and create a new backup, even if you already have one.
    2) open ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator/Data/Library/Application Support/com.apple.configurator/Resources
those are the backups that have been made.  more may be listed here than in configurator. they are zip files of the backups
also found in mobilesync.  there should be one just created now.  that’s your backup.  (the ones in mobilesync are not usable)
    3) copy the newest one to removable storage and connect storage to the target computer
    4) attach an iPad that goes with the target computer to the target computer and make a backup there also.  name it as you want the backup you are importing.
    5) open that same folder on target computer and locate newest backup.
    6) copy file name, and rename the one on removable storage to that same name
    7) drop (replace) file on target computer
    8) select the backup you just created to be the restore image for that iPad
    9) you will have to click Restore to save.  it may not change anything on the iPad (do not be alarmed)
    10) check configurator prefs and make sure ‘restore when attached” and “restore default data” are both checked
    11) unplug and replug the iPad
it should definitely do a proper “Restoring Settings” now, and you will see the image has successfully been copied.  It can now be
selected as the restore image for any additional iPads on the target computer.
For some reason, manually clicking Refresh at the bottom doesn’t usually work right after replacing an image.
YMMV if there is significant differences between the two computers doing the configurator management.
(this is in answer to the question I was trying to find an answer for earlier, found it myself, hope this helps other admins)
    to free space, also look:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator/Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.config urator (contains TWO hidden firmware folders)
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator/Data/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup (MANY backups)

  • Configurator restoring backup

I've been unable to successfully restore a backup to any iPads be they brand new or an erase and install.
I've created backups from our "master" iPad that includes VPP paid apps and Casper JAMF profiles and when those failed I tried dumbing things down and creating a backup of a brand new, "blank" iPad. That stalled as well.
I either get this as the final console entry that leaves configurator running and responsive with the iPad available (slide to unlock screen):
3/12/12 11:20:39.637 AM Apple Configurator: _GCDSearchPthreadOnceRoutine (thread 0x107400000): Looked up GCD symbols, got addresses: 8d2d2884, GCD_AVAILABLE is 1
Or I get this as the final console entry:
    3/12/12 12:53:26.179 PM [0x0-0x228228].com.apple.configurator: ERROR - 493357ms Encountered an error deleting the backup after a restore (/SourceCache/AppleConfigurationUtility/AppleConfigurationUtility-90.1/Applicat ion/Controllers/CDDeviceController+Backup.m:166)
Has anybody got this "1.0" to work?

Running into the same problem here when trying to do multiple iPhones through the configurator (update and restore from backup) - the phone's name had been physically renamed on the device itself but still shows the old name on the configurator - makes me things that it's something wrong with the program???

  • Apple Configurator Device Backup Not Working - HELP ASAP Please

    Hey Everyone!
We are trying to backup one iPad so we can take that backup and add it to all of our other iPads....
In Apple Configurator I've added all of the apps, setup a profile, etc.
On PREPARE, At the top I go to DEVICES and click on BACKUP. It gets to the "archiving" part of step 1 of 2 and I receive a popup saying "Could Not Create a backup. The device was disconnected... check the usb connection to this device".
I'm going to assume this has nothing to do with my USB connection as I've tried several ports and several cables.
We really need to get this backup and restore it onto all of our ipads as soon as possible.
This is our first time using apple configurator!
    Thanks so much!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Let's get your iPhone back up and running reeset12! My first recommendation is to try a soft reset by holding down the power and home keys. If the device doesn't respond, I recommend connecting it to a computer via the usb cable. If you are unable to get past the logo screen in either case, I recommend a hands on evaluation at a store location.

  • How to clear Apple Configurator "Restore" items

I would like to clear the old items in the Restore dropdown in Apple Configurator and I can't seem to find a pref file or anything that relates to it.

    Hi ThurstinJ,
If you delete the .iosdevicebackup file on your computer for the backup listed, it'll remove the item the next time you close out of Configurator and relaunch it. Do a Spotlight search on your Mac for the one(s) you want to remove (eg. iPad1.iosdevicebackup ) and Trash it. I've done this in both Apple Configurator v1.2.1 and 1.3.1 and it works.
    Hope this answers your question!

  • Possible to extract documents from Apple Configurator device backup file?

We updated several student iPads via Apple Configurator. All went well except for 2 devices that came out of the refresh process with all the student data wiped from the device. I am afraid to check the device in and check it out again for fear of losing the original backup made prior to the restore. I can see the device backup files but have no idea how to work with them. Is it possible for me to extract the documents and photos the students need?

  • Apple configurator: lost backup

    Hi to everyone,
unfortunately I lost the backup of apple configurator on my MacBook.
I'm a teacher and I manage about 60 Ipad in my school.
Now I need to remove supervised device from my community, without loosing their own backup on ICloud.
I tried to restore Ipad with ICloud backup, but supervised profile still remain in the device.
How can I remove supervised profile?
    Thanks a lot
    Paolo

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to back up app data from a Supervised device and restore it to an Unsupervised device. The workaround isn't pretty, but it is technically possible. And yes, you must use the original computer that supervised the device. Here's how to do it:
Let's say that the school district purchased VPP codes for Notability and installed it on all Supervised iPads. You don't want the student to leave with the app, but you do want the student to have his/her Notability data. I will pretend to be the student and will make a few notes in Notability (which was installed on this iPad using Apple Configurator under a district controlled Apple ID).
In Apple Configurator under the Supervised tab, back up the student's iPad (click the Restore drop down  menu and select "Back Up.")
Give your back up a name and click "Create Backup."
After the back up completes, click on the Restore drop down menu again and select “Edit Stored Backups."
A new window will open showing you a listing of back ups available. Hold down the Option key and two new button will appear in the lower left corner (a "+" for importing, and a sharing icon for exporting). Highlight the backup of your iPad and click the sharing icon.
Choose a location where you want to save the backup (for this example, lets save it to the Desktop) and click "Export."
When the export is complete, click Done.
Now, Unsupervise the iPad (Ctrl+click the iPad listed in Apple Configurator and choose Unsupervise. In the pop up window, select Unsupervise Device). This will wipe the device of all data and apps.
Once the iPad restarts, select the Prepare tab. You will see your iPad listed there.
Next to Supervision, turn the switch to "Off." Next to iOS, choose "No Change." Click on the Restore drop down menu and choose "Other." Navigate to your Desktop and highlight the .iosdevicebackup file. Click "Open."
Click the Prepare button. This will restore the back up to the iPad but it will now be Unsupervised. NOTE: You will still see the Supervision profile listed under Profiles. However, you can now connect the iPad to iTunes on a different computer and you won't see the message "This iPad is supervised by another computer and cannot be used with this computer" anymore. Even though you can't get rid of the Supervised profile listed under Profiles on the iPad (because its a part of the back up), it is now dormant and does not affect the iPad anymore.
Apps are not restored from the back up. However, even though the apps are not on the iPad the app data has been restored to the iPad (the app data is hidden). So once the back up restores to the iPad, the student can download/install apps from the App Store. For this example, I will go to the App Store and use my personal Apple ID to download Notability. After Notability installs, I launch the app and now see my data. I am now on an Unsupervised iPad with my data from a Supervised device.
So while its not a fast or seamless workaround, it is possible to back up data from a Supervised iPad and restore it to an Unsupervised iPad… it just takes several steps to do so.
I hope this answers your question and helps you with data back ups and restores on your Supervised devices. Good luck!

  • Configurator restore backup loses iPad Restrictions password and email password.

I am using configurator. I have experienced progress, yeah! I have 12 iPads. The one I setup with perfect settings and apps is named, A1.
I have successfully created a backup of A1, and call it Configurator Master BU.
When I supervise my remaining iPads, A2-A12, I have it set to restore from the above mentioned backup.I plug them in, and click apply. Even if an app was deleted, it comes back. Yeah! Since I am restoring from a backup of an iPad that was already configured, I don't get the iOS setup assistant anymore. Yeah!
I created a profile, and tried to set up a gmail email account there. The imap.gmail.com incoming email server just wouldn't work! So I decided to delete that 'payload' and go set up the email on A1 through Account settings. On the iPad A1, I also enabled Settings->General->Restrictions and set a password. I restricted allowing the users to change the email accounts. A1 works great.
    The restored iPads do not.
When checking email, it says the account doesn't have a password.
When you go to settings, the account info is greyed-out.
When you go to restrictions, they are greyed out, except that you can select "enable restrictions".
Once you do that, you can go back in and set the email password.
How can I convince Configurator to keep the email and restrictions passwords when I restore form backups?
    Thank you!
    Taylor.

Okay so the Restrictions thing has been bugging me because I know I've been able to have restrictions set without having to manually do it one by one. So I set up a test lab here of 5 iPads. Wiped them all and started new.
I took one iPad (we'll call it A1). Went through the setup process, selecting country, wifi, terms, etc. Once the home screen came up, I set a restrictions password and set some restrictions. Then I launched iTunes and plugged A1 into the MacBook. I made an Encrypted Backup of A1. Ejected A1. Closed iTunes. Launched Apple Configurator. Took iPads A2-A5 and Supervised them (not restoring any backup). Then I launched iTunes. A2-A5 show up in iTunes. Then I restored the iTunes Encrypted Backup to A2-A5 (one at a time…ugh). After they finished restoring, I quit iTunes and launched Apple Configurator again. In the Supervise tab, I added apps and configuration profiles. They all installed seamlessly. I checked A2-A5 and the restrictions are all set on A2-A5.
The drawback here is that you can't restore a Supervised backup to your iPads…only add/remove profiles and apps with Configurator. If an iPad ever needs a full backup restored, you would need to do it via iTunes Encrypted Backup in order for the Restrictions to hold. If you try to restore a Supervised backup with Configurator then you'll reset the Restrictions.
Its kind of a roundabout way of doing it, but at least you won't have to manually set restrictions on every single iPad.

  • New iphone, restore backup failed with - An error occurred. How do I fix this?

Have tried to follow the transfer instructions but it does not seem to work.
Everytime I choose to restore a backup when I set up / activate the new iphone, it fails after some 10-12 seconds with the message that it could not restore because an error occurred.
It says nothing else about what the error is and I have to start the set up / activation all over.
So how so I solve this?
Other 'answers' says how to transfer, but it does not work for me and the answers I have found does not address this issue.

Search the error code in the support search and you should find something that will walk you through it, but without an error code it's a little hard to know what you're talking about

  • Fail to install app, Fail to restore backup, Fail to restore factory mode

Thanks for all the help in advance, I am really desperate at the moment.
    Any hint will be appreciated
_*Device and environment*_: WiFi ipad iOS4.2.1,
Synced to a XP sp3 computer with itunes 10.1.2, no virus malware guaranteed, security/antivirus softwares turned off and on with no difference in symptom
    *_History of problem_*
    1. ipad was bought last year and was on IOS3.2.2 ever since,
I bought about total of 40 apps with 3 iTunes accounts, I didn't go to IOS4 because I liked the rotation switch and doesn't need multitask. Never jail break or even attempted
    2. Mid Jan, when I try to update the apps, iTunes start to give error such as
*App cannot be installed, or internal error occurred*
    Error codes are normally
    0xE800000C
    0xE8004006
    3. I reboot the ipad and tried again, still same error, so I think I should restore to the earlier backup
Then it says *ipad cannot restore to backup, an internal error occurred*
    4. Then I decide to restore to the factory first by setting it into factory restore mode,
in such mode, itunes hang at the *"Preparing Ipod Software For Restore", it takes about 10-20mins then say it cannot restore*
    *Error code: 0xE8004017*
    5. Without my knowledge, my wife bought it to apple store when she go downtown, the guy over there then restore it to a factory ios4.2.1. And told my wife there may be problem with my computer OS. I was not there so I don't know what exactly he said or did, but apparently it only took him no more then a few minutes in total
    6. I tried to restore the ipad to my backups so I can get my settings and apps back, same error occurred, says *"restore to backup, an internal error occurred"*
    7. I then decided to forget about my settings, just install my apps, a couple apps installed correctly(e.g. doc2go), most (include ibooks, accuweather...) showed same error poped out
App cannot be installed, or internal error occurred
    0xE800000C
    0xE8004006
    8. At this point I was very frustrated. I called apple support, they asked me to *reboot ipad,*
    *reboot computer,*
    *removed itunes, quicktime and everything*
    *and reinstall,*
*log in with another user name,*
*turn antivirus on and off, uninstall all antivirus*
totally 2 hours spent on the phone.
    Still no success,
Then they asked me to format my computer and reinstall windows, I refused.
And they suggested that I bring it to apple store again, I asked them whether apple store will simply restore it to factory mode again like they did, they said yes!
Then I refused because it would not make any difference than the current state, I still have to install my apps myself afterwards
I tried search in here and everywhere and nothing really pop up,
any hint will be really appreciated!
    THanks again

  • Backups failing with error 19: the backup disk could not be resolved, or there was a problem mounting it

    Hello all,
Doubt this issue relates to a recent and ugly issue but sharing anyways (resolved thanks to a user here: LaPastenague)
Time Capsule won't backup if Modem (Motorola SB6121) attached
This was on Feb 10th resolved. Few days later I upgraded to Yosemite.  Backups were working fine since.
Yesterday I happen to notice my last backup was 5 days ago.  I looked in the console logs and saw:
2/25/15 3:55:06.127 PM com.apple.backupd[2777]: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Paul;AUTH=SRP@Time%20Capsule._afpovertcp._tcp.local./Data

I called Apple.  Their front line was clueless. He suggested resetting the TC (latest "tower" model btw") which then a backup kicked off YEAH
But the next hour it failed
Called Apple again, this time to Sr Advisor.  He suggested factory reset of the TC and set up again.  Also first backup worked then rest failed
Third call to Apple useless also.  He was asking questions I didn't feel relevant.  He also was asking me to reset the TC which I told him was done 2 hours prior. He asked me to reboot which I could NOT at that time.
I begged him to collect data to submit to engineering, which will take days to get a reply.
So I thought I would throw this out to the community....
TC Is NEW (replaced from last issue).  Mac is 8 months old (iMac 27"), Os is Yosemite,  TC also new (latest model)
    Thanks...

Yosemite is problematic on two fronts.. Networking and Time Machine.. so the combo of doing both with a Time Capsule is like bugs on bugs.
Here is my standard list.. but your problem maybe difficult to resolve.. and my suggestion is simple.. until Apple get their act together and fix TM.. buy Carbon Copy Cloner and use that for your backup. It is solid and reliable.. even better if you use USB drive plugged into the computer and do a bootable clone.. because then you have a backup that is able to be tested for full functionality 2min after the end of the backup.
This also starts from a factory reset.. but the reason for it is to change the configuration which is much more easily handled with factory reset to begin.. the instructions are there.. because this is my standard reply.. this is not uncommon!!
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the Mac itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore

  • Time Machine Backups Failing w/ Error: (-36) SrcErr:YES

    Machine History:
    2008 iMac
    2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo
    4 GB of 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Version 10.7.5 OSX
External G-Drive 500 GB HD connected via Firewire.
Late yesterday my iMac started acting crazy.  On reboot the machine did not come back up and was hung up on the Apple Logo.  The circular progress meter was spinning and the system would not boot into the OS.  At this point I started the system with the command key and R to get to the ulitlity menu.  At this point I initiated a full system restore back to a backup dated June 10th 2013.  The restore ran clean with no errors and the system came back up.  At this point I wiped out my G-Drive so that I could take a full backup of the system.  I partitioned the G-Drive 400 GB for Time Machine and 100 GB to manually backup photos and other files.  I created the partition and manually backup family photos since it seems that at times I've added photos into iPhoto and they don't get added into the backup sets.
At this point I noticed that the Spotlight Indexing job was running in the background.  The same time the Time Machine Full backup was running and initated and I'm not sure what happend.  I recieved a generic error stating that the backup could not be completed at this time.  Backups to disk will not run and recieve the same error.  It appears that there are a ton of files on my mac HD that have this Error: (-36) SrcErr:YES error.  I've tried a few things:
Using Terminal to mv or cp the files locally on the mac HD.  This fails with I/O Errors
Using Terminal to mv or cp the files to the backup HD connected via FireWire.  That fails with I/O Errors.
I've confirmed that the files are readable by the application.  iMovie in this case.  I was able to play the video content.  So I belive that the files are in fact ok and good.
I've manually ran a full reindexing of spotlight.  I suspected that the indexing was out of sync and that Time Machine was having a hard time with the metadata.
I've also confirmed that JPG file had this error in the /var/logs/system.log.  I was able to open the JPG with preview and iPhoto with no issues.  But, I can not copy or move the file to any locations on either the HD or the Backup HD.
Permissions on the files are rw-r-r.  In another case I changed them to rw-rw-rw and that still did not make a difference as I would have expected.
My fear is that my Mac HD is getting ready to take a DUMP literally.  Most of the stuff on the machine I don't care about however I do care about the family photo's and videos.  To this point I've been able to manually backup my photos to the external disk.  I have not yet backed up my videos.  Starting to get stressed about that.  I was about to take the PC in to Apple Care at the local store but wanted to disucss here as well.  Any help would be appreciated.

This is done.  I went into the Apple store and they had me run SMART Untiliy on my machine.  There are a ton of bad sectors on my HD.  Time for a new disk.

  • Backup fail on Time Machine and My Passport for Mac on Yosemite

Cannot seem to get Time Machine to do a full backup of my NEW My Passport for Mac.
    I've:
    - Updated firmware on WD external drive (and formatted correctly for Apple)
    - Updated to latest IOS 10.10.3 (Yosemite)
    - Verified and repaired Mac HD via iOS Disk Utility and the WD Drive Utility (no issues found on either)
Error message continues to be "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to My Passport for Mac. An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I'm backing up about 250 GB and have done this numerous times on my Passport for Mac. Everything SEEMS to be fine during backup, until after about 2-3 hours, into a 4-hour backup, the error message appears without any error codes.
Does anyone have any input?  I don't think it is on the WD side.  Anyone know if there an issue with Time Machine and this external drive?  Help!
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Linc,
    I hope this helps you.
