Apple preps second software fix for flickering 27-inch iMacs

AppleCare technicians: A second fix for screen flickering affecting the hardware is due within 3 weeks.
In a thread on the Apple Discussions forums that spans nearly 250 pages, users have begun to report conversations with AppleCare representatives who claim a new update is forthcoming. A month ago, Apple released a software fix for the flickering issue on the 27-inch iMac, but since then users have said it did not address the problem. One user, Dennis Murphy, said he was told that AppleCare technicians were issued a bulletin on Saturday that stated a fix would be released in about three weeks. The Apple employee was allegedly instructed to collect customer contact information so they can be reached when the fix is released.
"This would clearly explain the extended shipping times we're seeing," Murphy wrote on the forums.
Last week, Apple delayed shipment of new direct-order 27-inch iMacs by three weeks. Supply issues have persisted for months, with Apple in December apologizing for the delays.
Another poster, GuiltyVerdict, wrote Saturday that an Apple representative told them a combination software and driver patch is due in roughly three weeks. "This will reportedly resolve the issue of the screen flickering (it is not hardware causing the issue)," the user wrote.
The three weeks allegedly cited by AppleCare technicians would coincide with the existing three-week wait time for direct orders of 27-inch iMacs. However, when contacted by AppleInsider Monday, an Apple representative said the three-week delay was not related to any hardware issues. Instead, they said the company has had trouble meeting up with demand for the new system, as some components are in limited availability. Still others have indicated system's internal graphics card cable could be the culprit. User ferris666 said they spoke with a technician who said the problem with the cable could not be fixed with a firmware update, though the "simple fix" has been implemented in newly produced machines.
While most of the reports are tied to the 27-inch model, there are also users who have experienced the same symptoms with the 21.5-inch model. When it debuted in October, the new iMac was the best-selling desktop in the U.S. for the month. Various issues were reported quickly, though the screen flickering has remained for some time.

I am not the engineer that you requested, but I think that you are missing the boat with the question. The 27" iMac already accepts 1080p. Any new Mac with a mini-DisplayPort can connect with the 27" iMac with a simple and inexpensive m-DP to m-DP cable and drive the iMac's display at its full resolution, 2560x1440 pixels.
So if this is a bassackwards way of inquiring about why an XBox or some other device is limited to 720p, it is because the adapter (~US$150) used limits the resolution to 720p. If you use a scaler (~US$299), which has its own graphics chip, instead of an adapter, then it can drive the iMac's display at 1080p.

Will Apple get out a fix for iOS6? it's terrible

Since the very first iphone/ipod/ipad, Apple has consistently released software updates/improvements/bug fixes.
There is no reason to believe that they will stop doing this now.

  • Is apple working of a fix for this update error.  8.0.1 needs 610mb of space.

Is apple working of a fix for this update error?  8.0.1 needs 610mb of space. Every time I try to install the latest update, I get this error:  "Updating to iOS 8.0.2 requires at least 610 MB of free space on your iPhone. Please change your media sync options to make more storage available."  There is way more space than that on my phone, (about 12gB) and no matter what i do, I keep getting this error.  And what the heck are media sync options?
Also, my phone will not backup, giving me another error.  iTunes could not backup this phone, because it could not back up to this computer, or something to that effect.  Even trying to manually backup to iCloud, i get the same message about this computer.  Seems like it started with the last update to iTunes.

  • Is Apple working on a fix for editing photos for wallpaper, call contacts with photo, etc? The iPhone used to be so intuitive for everything but that tanked with the ios7 upgrade

iPhone 5 was so intuitive before the update. Editing photos has changed for the worst-any word of a fix for editing photos for wallpaper? Not a work around, a fix. If I wanted this kind of photo editing I'd still be using my droid x.
Anyway to go back to ios6?

  • HT1766 I loaded the software fix for face time and it wiped out my contacts and photos. can I restore them?

I loaded the software fix for face time and in loading the new software I lost all of my other content (WITHOUT ANY WARNING). This included my contacts, photos, music. The music I can restore and losing the contacts is an inconvenience, but losing the photos is devastating.
    Any ideas?

What software fix for FaceTime? What software did you apply?
Did you backup your iPhone before you updated it with whatever update you applied as described in HT1766? If so, did you backup to iCloud or iTunes? Either way your  data should be restorable from that backup.

  • TS3642 Is Apple working on a fix for this so Windows users can import a .band file?

Exporting from the iPad Garageband into iTunes is a cinch. The resulting .band file can be sent via email or by other means to another computer. If that computer is a Mac, it is possible to reverse the process and import the .band file into iTunes for use on another iPad. But Apple has not implemented the same code for the Windows version of iTunes, so if your collaborator has an iPad and Garageband, but no Mac, there is no way to get the .band file back onto another iPad. Apple says as much in TS3642. Does anyone know if Apple is working to fix this problem? Or can anyone think of a workaround?

I've been prompted to look at this again and have found a decent workaround...
Annoyingly the Windows version of iTunes doesn't handle .band projects properly. You can use .iTunes to transfer a project from one device into the file sharing area for the app and save it to your computer, but you can't drag a .band folder into that area to upload to another device. In contrast a round trip is possible for iMovieMobile as those project folders are rolled up into a .zip file.
I've just tested iFunBox which allows you to copy files to and from the iOS device's file system. Share the GarageBand project to iTunes on the device in the normal way, connect it to a computer running iFunBox, click the iFunBox Classic button, expand the tree to show App File Sharing > GarageBand and drag the project folder to your computer. Connect the other device, show the App File Sharing > GarageBand view, drag the project folder in, then in GarageBand on the device use the plus symbol in the My Songs view to copy the project from iTunes.
My only slight reservation is that AVG flagged up one of the components of iFunBox as a security risk, although having let AVG take remedial action the iFunBox program carried on working and there is no sign that AVG actually quarantined any files. I suspect a false positive, the program has been around for some time and has plenty of good recommendations. I'm sure if it were known to be malicious I'd have found the evidence.

  • Is Apple working on a fix for the Boot Camp on 3TB Fusion Drive issue?

Me and so many others wish to know if Apple is planning to fix this in the future. We just need to know in order to decide if waiting for the fix is an option.

  • Is Apple working on a fix for ios6 that will stop it from using huge data in the iphone 4s?

When I upgraded my iPhone 4s to ios6, it started using huge amounts of data.  My provider refuses to reimburse me.  Today they told me that Apple has acknowledged the problem and has fixed it in ois6.3.  However, ois6.3 is unavailable for the 4s, and my provider tells me that Apple has not acknowledged that the problem exists in the 4s.  They referred me to Apple.  However, because the phone is off warranty, I will have to pay $35 + tax to talk to an Apple rep--and surely Apple knows the problem extends to the 4s, because it is widely discussed on-line.  I have not seen any reference to whether Apple is working on a fix for the 4s.  Does anyone know?  I can't afford this much longer and am going to have pay a lot of money to switch phones.  And when I switch phones, it won't be an Apple, which will also make me sad--but it is ridiculous for them to produce a problem that is costing so much money and then not to acknowledge it exists.  I am hoping that having addressed it in the 5, they will now turn to the 4s.  Does anyone know?

Yeah, the 6.0.2 update was rolled out to deal with that issue amongs others. But getting it out for the older models was either not high priority or more complex than they anticipated. So the wait continues till it shows up on the update channel.
Pestering Apple Support might not get it done quicker, but at least will offer some sort of vicarious revenge and relief.

  • IPad 2 is getting very slow after installing iOS8. Is Apple comming with a fix for it?

iOS8 is making ipad2 extremely slow. I can't work with it anymore. When is Apple comming with a fix?

Now, you can downgrade your iPad from iOS 8 to iOS 7, BUT do it quickly. A few days later, the way is not available any longer:
    1. Download iOS 7.1.2 firmware for your iPad 2. (just google it)
    2. Make sure you have install the latest version of iTunes.
    2. Connect your iPad to computer via a USB cable.
    3. After detected, your iPad will be shown in the left column. Click your iPad to show the control panel.
Note: Make sure you have backups of your iPad. if not, backup it now.
    4. Under Summary tab, hold on Shift key in Windows(Option key in Mac ) click Restore iPhone....
    5. In the pop-up window, find the firmware on your computer and click Open.
    6. Then, iTunes will downgrade your iPad to iOS 7.1.2.

  • Is there a fix for my intolerably slow iMac?

I will greatly appreciate any help provided by the community - whether it's harsh reality or a miraculous fix.
My beloved 24" iMac (Early 2009, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB) - which ran like a dream all the way through 10.6.xx has been booted back to 2001 in terms of speed.  Even the simplest of things like opening Mail, launching Chrome or even copying files bring up the dreaded rainbow wheel and sometimes take 3-5 minutes to launch and return keyboard and mouse control to me. Photoshop and Aperture are virtually unusable.  A simple crop in Photoshop has caused a total system hang and working with any file over say 20MB in size becomes a game of patience, waiting and resisting the urge to put my fist through the glass out of frustration.
I'm a Mac user since 1993 and I've never been forced to downgrade the OS.  I've either ponied up and bought a newer model, or refused to upgrade the OS after learning a particular OS rendered my model unusable.  Well, I received poor information this time and this iMac went from a graphic and web production machine to being a glorified web browser (and even that is slow, jerky and unreliable).
Is there a cure for my woes short of trying to find my original install DVD and retrograding the entire thing back to 10.6?  I'm loathe to do this becaue this will render as useless several programs I use regularly - Coda for example and all of my Apple apps - iPhoto, Aperture, and who knows what else.  Based on the fact that I try to keep all my software current at all times, it could start an endless backward spiral that makes the situation even worse than it is already.
I am not in a position to upgrade with a new OS on the horizon and the current iMac crop aging as well - in fact, now would be perhaps the worst time to jump to a new machine.  Nor do I wish to lug this beast over to the Apple store and waste an afternoon waiting for a Genius to tell me to buy a new system.
I simply need to make the right choice this time instead of the wrong choice, which was installing Lion, and I could use some advice.
    most sincerely,
    Dave Bias

Well seeing as I'm running Lion on 2 GB of RAM, I can't see how upgrading the RAM will make that much of a difference.    If you are seeing launch times in minutes, it probably indicates your cache got corrupted by some third party cache cleaning software.  To see if some corruption can be fixed, first backup your data:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Then boot in safe mode, holding the shift key.  If issues persist in safe mode, run the hardware test that came with your Mac.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
And if that is unrevealing, and booting into safe mode doesn't solve anything, and you are backed up, try repairing the directory by:
    1. Booting into the restore partition with command-R.
    2. Selecting the installer's Utilities menu.
    3. Selecting Disk Utility
    4. Selecting First Aid
    5. Selecting the boot partition.
    6. Click on repair disk (not repair permissions)
Do NOT proceed with any install itself.  Just quit the install program
If the disk is not able to be repaired, purchase Alsoft Disk Warrior, and boot of that to repair the directory.
If it is able to be repaired, and the machine is still slow, I think you may have run into some RAM that is bad, and need to replace it, not add to it.
If Disk Warrior can't repair the hard disk, replace the hard disk itself.

  • How do I fix this - my 24 inch imac indicates its screen is 16.5 inch

My 24 inch iMac began displaying everything much bigger than normal today.  The system preferences display resolution is set to 1280 x 800 which is normal, but in Displays under the About this Mac it says the display is 16.5 inches.
What happened? And how do I fix this?

Click on the Desktop, select Help->Mac Help->search for ZOOM and you'll probably find that you've inadvertently activated an Universal Access setting.

  • How much would it cost to get a replacement screen for my 27 inch iMac (late 2010)?

    Just as the title says.

It will vary based on where you are located. Pick up the phone and start calling your local Apple Store and AASP's for a quote.
