Apple USB Keyboard Extinction

Ok I bought the new Apple USB keyboard a few months ago. Well it came with a USB extinction cord. The only problem is that the USB in side has that little triangle which keeps people from using it with other devices. Well is there a site or store that sells an adapter that plugs into it and has a regular USB in on the other side.
If people need I can post pictures.
I originally posted this hear:

The Apple USB "extension cord" is deliberately keyed (possibly so that you don't try to string seven of them together and exceed the allowed length for USB). It works only with the keyboard and you cannot use it for other USB devices.
If there were an adapter (which there is not) it would be more expensive than a new cable. Just buy another USB cable, A male to A female. They are available from your favorite online vendor.

  • Apple USB keyboard does not work

I have the same problem as described by Sweboss on November 15th, 2012. The Apple USB keyboard is working perfectly, but if I shut down the computer, when I switch it on again, the USB keyboard does not respond, and the computer is looking for a Bluetooth keyboard (which I had before). I have tried switching off, unplugging all peripherals, then unplugging the computer, waiting 15 seconds, then plug it in, wait 5 seconds (this is a remedy proposed in other mails). Switch on and the USB keyboard does not respond. It is not that particular USB port, as it works perfectly well with other peripherals like my scanner, or printer, and changing ports does not help. And when I tried it last time, I had no other USB peripherals connected. Can anyone help?

That is definitely some strange behavior, good to finally be working, but does not explain exactly what causes the behavior.  Could have something to do with the energy saver part of the operating system, or a miscommunication with the USB bus itself.  With multiple USB ports it would be good to test on different ports to see if that is an issue.  Anyway, it is working now and that is good.
Another I don't know why but it works: a couple months ago a user was having problems with a wireless keyboard.  The keyboard-iMac communication resulted in random charaters, time lag, and other bad behavior.  The user finally found by accident that turning the keyboard off, removing the batteries, and then spending about five minutes just pressing keys, placing the palm of the hand on the keyboard and pressing, just pressing and pressing, and then replacing the batteries and turning on the keyboard, it worked fine.  Seems like it is necessary to just force the keyboard to discharge all of the key switches.  Those keyboards use capacitance switches instead of mechanical switches.  So they retain a charge.
While that was a wireless keyboard, I wonder if that was what happened in a way with your keyboard...the unplugging and leaving it for a period of time, any charge may have dissipated and it would work again.  If this happens again, try the above procedure and see if it helps.

  • After upgrading to 10.8.3 my Apple USB keyboard stops working after about 3 hours

    Mac Pro 3,1
    OS X 10.8.3 Server
    32GB RAM
Apple USB Keyboard works fine after reboot (typing on it now), stops responding after about 3 hours.
I see nothing in Console that looks like the culprit. Here is everything around the last time it happened - between 11:28 and 11:30 they keyboard just stopped working. Unplugging and re-plugging doesn't bring it back. Changing USB ports doesn't bring it back. Rebooting is the only thing that seems to work. Bluetooth keyboard works before and after.

    Everything worked fine in 10.8.2.

    Hey Doug,
Thanks for your post, and welcome to the Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your keyboard backlight is not working upon startup, the following may resolve your issue:

  • Why don't my Apple USB keyboard and mouse work in Win XP after bootcamp driver installed

    Hey there,
I just installed Win XP Pro + SP2 using Bootcamp 3.0 on my Mac Pro 1.1 (2006) which is running Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  The Win XP installation went flawlessly and everything seemed to be working OK (mouse & keyboard were fine) until I installed the Bootcamp drivers from my OS X installation DVD.  The installation didn't report any problems, but when it was finished, the keyboard (Apple USB keyboard) and mouse (Logitech USB mouse) stopped responding.  No power to the mouse at all makes me believe that it is actually the USB drivers themselves that have failed.  Rebooting WinXP didn't solve the problem - it boots WinXP just fine (and fast!), shows the Bootcamp Help screen, but no mouse or keyboard, a.k.a., USB, response.
Can I recover from this somehow?
    Help please?
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Problem solved.
It seems that the boot camp 3.0 drivers installed from my 10.6.8 DVD weren't sufficient.  I repeated the install from scratch, but rather than rebooting as soon as the BC 3.0 drivers were installed, I allowed the Apple Update utility to D/L and install the BC 3.1 and 3.2 updates.  Viola!  Everything works brilliantly.  My Mac Pro is now the best Windows PC I have ever owned

  • I have my Macbook Air hooked up to a Tunderbolt Display, is there any way to either power on or wake from sleep mode using an Apple USB keyboard pluged into the Thunderbolt display?

I have my Macbook Air hooked up to a Thunderbolt Display, is there any way to power on the Macbook Air using an Apple USB keyboard plugged into the Thunderbolt display? I would like to be able to keep the Macbook Air in the Archbook dock and not have to open it to power it on?
    Thanks for any advise.

  • My external Apple USB Keyboard letters doesn't work, but the numbers do. Why and how can I fix this issue?

My external Apple USB Keyboard letters doesn't work, but the numbers do. Why and how can I fix this issue? Also, When I open the Keyboard Viewer, the letters will highlight only if I hold the modifier key(s) "Control" or "Control and Option". I really need help with this. I don't have any other computer to try it on, so I will have to test it on a friends computer sometime. But perhaps solutions that I can try right now? Thanks.

  • Apple usb keyboard not working

hello, recently my apple usb keyboard stopped working.  the usb connections on the keyboard still work but the letter buttons do not do anything anymore.  is the keyboard fried or is this fixable?

I assume you tried another USB port and tried the KB on another computer. A pc will suffice for testing purposes.

  • Apple USB Keyboard not working when connected in Macbook PRO retina

I have this problem. When I connect my new Apple usb keyboard directly to the laptop it does work. Is there any way to solve this problem?
    BR

I just did the latest update and my Apple USB keyboard stopped working. The keyboard works fine with other computers and other keyboards work with my Macbook.
The keyboard ships with a three foot extension cable. I plugged the keyboard into the Macbook with this cable and now it's working fine. I think it has something to do with the USB port being 3.0. A USB hub may also solve the issue.

  • Apple USB Keyboard with Numeric Keypad Problem

    Hi,
    I have a Mac Mini macOS 10.5.8
I just bought an apple USB keyboard with numerci keypad (aluminium) and am having problems
    1/ If i hit @ i get <
    2/ if i hit < i get @
3/ the function keys do not work : if i hit fn F11 it displays the desktop (as F11 does also), i was expecting lower volume
4/ if i hit fn F12 i get the widgets (as with F12) i was expecting higher volume
    etc....
It seems my USB keyboard with numeric keypad is not recognized.
If i look at the Keyboard Visualizer (top right) it displays a keyboard that does NOT look like mine, it is smaller.
Why isn't this keyboard correctly recognized ?
    Thanks
    Marc

ok thanks for the tip and yes i admit i didn't see that...
but it seems a little weird to have to upgrade all the OS to Snow Leopard just to use a keyboard.
That kind of new device should be configured through a driver to download...shouldn't it ?
I presume there's no keyboard driver that can solve my problem.. ?
so you confirm that if i pay for Snow Leopard and upgrade my OS, my keyword will definitely work correctly with my Mac Mini ?
    Thanks

Hi I've just installed OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.2 - My Apple USB Keyboard will no longer work.  Any suggestions?  (iMac Retina 5K, 27inch Late 2014) Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the assist.  Looks like there is a glitch in the new software, as I did as you suggested, removed other USB devices, powered off.  Then plugged in the keyboard - re started and hey presto it worked.  Thanks v.m.

  • After a power outage my usb ports on the back of the tower do not recognise the apple usb keyboard upon start up. How do I fix this issue?

I have a Mac Pro 5.1 and after a power outage my usb ports on the back of the tower do not recognise the apple usb keyboard upon start up. If I leave the plug out and then insert the keyboard after start up it works fine. The same happens with the front usb ports. How do I fix this issue?

  • Silver Apple USB Keyboard

I have seen AndyO give excellent advice many times on the Mac Mini and when doing so exclude the Aluminum Apple USB keyboard in operations in attempt to correct a problem. I was curious to know why the Aluminum Keyboard doesn't work?

As said here, the only problem with the Aluminium keyboard when used with a Mac mini is that the startup modifier keys (used for booting to the optical drive, to the boot loader screen etc) don't work. It's simply that this keyboard has firmware that isn't recognised by the mini until it has already passed the point in the startup process where the modifier keys would otherwise work.
personally, I find having an old (PC) USB keyboard around for the few occasions I need to boot the mini unusually is plenty sufficient, but the fact the boot keys don't work has caused considerable frustration for those who aren't aware of it!
Apple clearly know of this issue, since it has been reported here many times since the aluminium keyboard was first released. It seems apparent they are not able to resolve it with the hardware as it currently is.

  • Apple USB Keyboard Buttons: Caps,A,S,D don't work

    I have a 2007 Apple usb keyboard A1243.
The buttons: Caps Lock/A/S/D do not respond when pressed, but the weird thing is if I hold down the key 'f' and press either of those keys 'a,s,d' or 'caps' , it activates the key pressed.
For example, if I hold 'f', and press caps lock, the green light activates and it affects all the other keys; or if I hold 'f' and press 'a' it will write: 'fa'. And 'f' is the only key that can make them work.
That just shows that those keys still send a signal when pressed.
I'm pretty sure this is not a software problem as I have tried on multiple Apple computers.
Please let me know what I can do to fix it.
    Thank You!

Have you recently bought this machine.  If so I suspect the keyboard was defective from the start.   If it has been in your possession for some time and been used it may have gotten soiled in some way.    It sounds to me as though there is possible liquid damage (have you tried to clean it?) but if that were the case, that would make it irreperable.

  • Apple USB keyboard does not work with one internal usb port

    Hi everyone,
hope someone can help me to solve my problem. I have a MPB13 retina late 2013 since something like 3 months. I have additional screen (dell), usb wired keyboard (apple) and BT magic mouse.
Since a few days, my usb keyboard does not work well. It only want to work properly when plugged to the rights side usb port internal port and not anymore on the left one. It also work on a usb external concentrator. Before, I had no problem, it worked perfectly. There was no problem such as cofee on it...
After searching the web on such problem, I tries a few things such as:
I tried the keyboard on another computer (windows): works fine
I tried usb stick and external DVD reading on the left internal usb ports: works fine
I switch the MPB off and turn it back on: the usb keyboard still does not work on the left usb port
I tried the SMC and PRAM reset : nothing
    Any idea ??
    Thanks
    Guillaume

I'm facing the same problem, found any solutions ?

  • Apple USB keyboard drawing too much power

I had my apple slim keyboard for more than a year and it always worked perfectly.
Last week I started receiving this error message at the login screen:
"Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled."
Changing the USB port used to solve the problem. Since this Sunday I can't get the keyboard to work on any USB port.
No other devices are using the keyboard as an HUB and the iMac has all the latest updates installed.
I tried on a Macbook and got the same result, while if connected to an HP laptop it works.
    I already tried:
    - changing USB ports on the rear of the iMac
    - attaching it on an externally powered USB HUB
    - resetting PRAM
    - resetting SMC
    - cleaning the contacts of the USB cable and the ports on the keyboardù
    - attaching usb devices to the ports on the keyboard will give them power, but those are not recognized by the system
Any clues? I ran out of ideas...
    thanks

It's related to the current drawn through the USB port itself which us monitored by the SMC and interpreted by the OS. Without getting too technical, Macs are better "tuned" to detect these issues. It sounds like your keyboard is dead or dying as it is drawing more than it's allocated current threshold. Solution, replace the keyboard. Some possible causes over time include, sweaty hands, humidity, coffee - it's the sugar over time that does the damage.
