Apple VPN Client fails after 10.4.7 update

I have three different remote computers that cannot connect over VPN remotely to our xServe running 10.3.9. After installing 10.4.7 update recently, all three remote computers fail to even hit the server logs (ie. no connection, no denial, no nothing on the server end). I had one machine that was running 10.4.6 tonight. VPN connection worked fine. Ran the software update, restarted, now that computer fails to make a connection.
It has nothing to do with the firewall on the xServe. I have turned that off with no success.
Any ideas? I appreciate the help.

to uninstall the client:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108021
you can create a client installer with the admin
under File, Create Client Installer...
Thanks for this. I will look into it further. The document you refer to states that 10.4 Clients should only be stopped rather than uninstalled, this concerns me a little. As I have tried simply stopping the service I will escalate to uninstalling the client and then see if reinstalling resolves the issue. Many thanks for your response.

I updated to 10.7.3 48 hours ago and my Apple bluetooth keybaord does not work.  My Mac Pro system is several years old and does not have an internal bluetooth.  I have been using a bluetooth dongle successfully.  The keyboard goes through the pairing process normally and appears connected in the System Preferences (Bluetooth) application but no characters appear when typing on the keyboard in any application.  How should I start to fix this problem?

I had this problem yesterday. Today, I decided to just turn BT off and back on again, and the keyboard paired successfully. So far, so good.

  • VPN Client Issue after Vista Upgrade

Not sure if this should be posted here, if not please let me know.
My organization has recently implemented Vista via an Upgrade-in-Place Process that takes an imaged system (Windows XP Pro - 32bit) and upgrades the system with a network image of Windows Vista Enterprise. Applications are left installed and herein lies my problem.
I'm using Cisco VPN Client 5.0.04, the client worked fine before the upgrade, after the upgrade, not so well.
While troubleshooting I noted the Cisco Systems VPN Adapter was no longer listed as being installed under Network Adapters in the Windows Device Manager, there was however an adapter, labled 6to4 adapter with an exclamation point. I went through the uninstall process for the Cisco VPN Client, rebooted and reinstalled. When trying to connect, I can use one of two pcf files (both are a back up of one another), the first connection profile goes through the motion of connection, tries to contact the security gateway, and states "Not Connected"
I enabled logging on the connection and tried again. Here's an excerpt from that log:

Has anyone seen this behavior after an upgrade from XP to Vista? I'm I going to have to start with a fresh install? I appreciate any suggestions or advice.
    Thanks,
    Jimi

I finally figured out this problem and I feel it should at least be shared for another person who runs into this problem.
The problem was resolved by loading my personal certificates (the one that is read by the smart card reader and used to authenticate me on VPN) needed to be added to the personal certificates folder in the Local Machine layer.
I did this by opening up an MMC window --> Adding the certificates snap-in (in windows 7 it distinguishes 3 different layers, so choose the local user and the computer layer) --> and then copying the certificates in the personal folder located under Certificates - Current User into the personal folder located in Local Machine.
The most likely reason this happened to me is that the image I was working with had security settings blocking the certificates to be read at the current user level and not at the local machine level. Therefore, it's a problem with out image and the security policies put in place at the registry level and/or group policies placed in Active Directory. This is more of a workaround than an actual fix to the problem, but at least it pinpoints where the break is happening.
Now I can push the image back to the developers to review the security policies placed in the image.

  • EZVPN Router to PIX - vpn tunnel fails after xauth

I'm trying to configure a 1721 router to connect to a PIX at the office, essentially putting the router in place of a software VPN client. I can connect to the PIX with both a software VPN client and a hardware VPN 3002, but whenever I try to configure the router with EZVPN, the tunnel fails to come up after the XAUTH negotiation. I've tried a few variations on configurations with no luck. Can anyone comment if this is possible? I've attached a config and debug info. Thanks in advance for any help and comments.
    Ken

Thank you for the suggestions. Currently, the PIX is configured to not allow the save password option on the remote end. Was hoping the PIX config wouldn't need any changes since its working for the software VPN clients. I tried your NAT suggestion:
ip nat inside source list 100 interface Ethernet0 overload
ip nat inside source list Lan_Addresses interface Ethernet0 overload
    ip access-list standard Lan_Addresses
    permit 192.168.5.0 0.0.0.255
    access-list 100 deny ip 192.168.5.0 0.0.0.255 10.0.0.0 0.0.15.255
    access-list 100 permit ip 192.168.5.0 0.0.0.255 any
This didn't change things. Also, things behave differently when I use a bad username/password, for example:

  • Multiple (but not all) VPN clients failing in Windows 8 and 8.1

Big question for VPN gurus, with a long story.  I got a new machine with Windows 8 in late December 2012.  I work remotely
for a bunch of different customers, so 100% of my work is done via VPNs.  My customers use a wide variety of VPN types.  These were all working fine up through early December 2013.  Suddenly a bunch of them stopped working.  I tried a ton
    of stuff:
    - Uninstalling all VPN clients and reinstalling them one at a time
    - Reinstalling / updating network drivers
    - Turning off and uninstalling antivirus and firewall software
    - Verified problem was on my machine, not local network, both by testing other machines on local network and by testing this machine on other networks
The following VPN clients would not work:
    Cisco VPN Client
    FortiSSL
    Microsoft built-in
The following VPN clients had no problems:
    Cisco AnyConnect
    ShrewSoft
    Juniper web-based SSL VPN
    Check Point web-based SSL VPN
    As you can imagine, having to use a second (Windows XP) machine to connect to half my customers was a source of some serious headaches.  After 3 weeks of beating my head against this, I finally upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1.  The hail mary worked;
    my VPN problems went away!
Two weeks later, the exact same symptoms resurfaced.  I've gone back through a bunch of the steps that didn't help the first time around, with the same results.  I expect a system refresh would probably do the trick, probably temporarily like the
OS upgrade, but I can't afford to spend a week reinstalling dozens of critical applications only to have the problem resurface after another couple of weeks.
At this point, the closest thing I have to a clue is that in both cases the problems started soon after installing an update to the Cisco AnyConnect client.  After uninstalling the client, the problems do not go away.
Exactly what do I mean when I say the VPN clients don't work?  That varies from one client to the next:
    Microsoft built-in: Error 720
FortiSSL: variable - sometimes won't finish connecting, sometimes connects for about a second
Cisco: variable - sometimes won't finish connecting, sometimes "connects" but I can't access anything
Has anybody seen this sort of behavior before?  Any suggestions for fixes I may not have tried yet?  Thanks in advance.

    Hi.
I have been similar issues with VPN clients. In my case cause of this problems seems to be "Deterministic Network Enhancer". So turning this component on and off usually helps.
Actually I writed one script to fix this probleem for my clients.
    <#
    .Synopsis
This script is ment for a fixing of network problems which may occur when you use Windows 8/8.1 with Client Hyper-V
    .DESCRIPTION
This script will disable and then enable again Deterministic Network Enhancer (dni_dne) component from network connections.
Parameter RegisterScheduledTask will register this script as a scheduled task which will be triggered at every  time when computer starts.
    .EXAMPLE
       Fix-Network.ps1
    .EXAMPLE
       Fix-Network.ps1 -RegisterScheduledTask
    #>
    param
        [switch]$RegisterScheduledTask
    function Test-IsRunAsAdministrator
       $currentUser = New-Object Security.Principal.WindowsPrincipal( [Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity]::GetCurrent())
       $currentUser.IsInRole( [Security.Principal.WindowsBuiltInRole]::Administrator)
    function Get-RunAsAdministrator
        if(!(Test-IsRunAsAdministrator))
            [string[]]$argumentList = @('-NoProfile' , '-File', $MyInvocation.ScriptName)
            if($RegisterScheduledTask)
                $argumentList += '-RegisterScheduledTask'
            Start-Process PowerShell.exe -Verb Runas -WorkingDirectory $PWD.Path -ArgumentList $argumentList
            break
    Get-RunAsAdministrator
    if($RegisterScheduledTask)
        $actionArgument = '-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File  "' + $PSCommandPath + '"'
        $action = New-ScheduledTaskAction -Execute "C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe" -Argument $actionArgument
        $trigger  = New-ScheduledTaskTrigger -AtStartup
$principal = New-ScheduledTaskPrincipal "SYSTEM" -LogonType ServiceAccount -RunLevel Highest
        Register-ScheduledTask -TaskName Fix-Network -Trigger $trigger -Action $action -description "Fix network for Windows 6.X with Hyper-V" -Principal $principal
    else
        $bindings = Get-NetAdapterBinding | Where-Object { ($_.ComponentID -eq "dni_dne") -and ($_.Enabled)}
        $bindings | Set-NetAdapterBinding -Enabled $false
        $bindings | Set-NetAdapterBinding -Enabled $true
        $date = Get-Date
        "Done:  $date" > $PSScriptRoot\Fix-Network.log
    Hope that this will help.

  • Phonefactor with RRAS(Windows Server 2003) - VPN client timeout after 20 seconds -- too fast!

[Note that I have previously posted this question on Experts Exchange... but have not found a solution yet].
We are a small business and would like to switch to two-factor authentication for VPN connections. We spent nearly a year helping Barracuda debug their small business VPN appliance and finally they took their boxes back and gave us back our money - they
just couldn't get file sharing to work consistently with some new firmware they had to install due to a patent case.
So... now we are trying Phonefactor.
Our VPN setup is RRAS on a Windows Server 2003 domain controller.
We have installed Phonefactor, enabled it as a Radius server, and configured RRAS to point to Phonefactor for Radius authentication. We configured phonefactor to send text messages for authentication, as we figured that would be less disruptive than a phone
    call.
It all works except... the timeout for VPN clients is only 20 seconds! By the time we receive the text message on a cell phone, sometimes there is only 5 or 6 seconds to get the six digit code typed into a reply on the cell phone... and unless we are really
nimble, that is frequently not enough time!
When the VPN client times out, it gives an Error 718 "The connection was terminated because the remote computer did not respond in a timely manner."
How can we increase the timeout on the VPN clients, so we can more reliably enter the authentication code in a reply back to phonefactor?
    Things we have tried:
    1) Connecting (PPTP) from different Windows clients to see if we get different timeout limits. So far we have tried several Windows 7 boxes and a Windows Server 2003 as the client, but in all cases the timeout is 20 seconds.
    2) On the windows clients: Searching through the PPTP client settings to see if there is one labeled "connection timeout". So far we have found nothing.
    3) On the windows 2003 server: Modifying the RRAS Radius Server time-out to be 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 300 seconds. We've tried restarting RRAS after these changes, but the client connection timeout is still 20 seconds.
    4) In the phonefactor configuration: Searching through the radius server settings to see if there is one labeled "connection timeout". So far we have found nothing.
    5) Using NTRadPing to connect directly to the phonefactor radius server. With NTRadPing we were able to wait more than 60 seconds without a timeout from phonefactor. So we don't *think* at this point that the issue is within phonefactor.
    6) We have asked phonefactor support, but their response is "hmmm... good question, we don't know, that sounds like a problem with your vpn client". And they could well be correct.
    7) Search the web for how to increase either the stock windows VPN client timeout, or the RRAS radius authentication timeout. No luck so far.
    8) Try this registry hack:
    http://windowsitpro.com/networking/solving-ras-718-error. Didn't help.
    Any ideas?
    thanks!

    Hi fdc2005,
    Thanks for the post.
However, generally, we first type User Name, Password, then click connect to establish the VPN connection. Such as:
Therefore, I have a little confusion about the timeout you mentioned. Would you please provide us more details.
Regarding error 718, please check if the following could help:
If you have a third-party VPN server which does not support MS-CHAPv2 as an authentication method and supports only MS-CHAPv1, you will need to use either CHAP or PAP to connect from the Windows Vista VPN client until the server you use starts supporting MS-CHAPv2.
    Steps to follow for resolution:
    (1) Check if the Routing and Remote Access Server (RRAS) is configured to allow connections with MS-CHAPv2
    (2) Check if the RADIUS server policy supports MSCHAPv2 (This step is needed if you control access to clients using Remote Access Policies on the IAS/NPS server)

  • VPN Client Failed Reason 422

    Hi All,
We have one laptop that keeps having VPN Issues. It is running Vista Business with VPN Client Version 5.0.04.0300.
This pc is constantly receiving the error message 422. Failed to initialise Virtual Adapter.
    Restarts do not fix it.
Reinstalling the client has not fixed
    it.
I have seen forums on the net saying to disable and re-enable the connection etc, however the user it is happening to only has USER permissions on the laptop so cannot modify anything when on the road.
Is there a fix for this?
    Thanks in advance

There are alot of issues running the VPN client on Vista.
My suggestion is to wait for a more reliable client for Vista, or downgrade to XP. Or you could look into the SSL Client.

  • Multiple vpn clients fail

When i try to run the vpn client on more than one computer to connect to a remote network, both connections fail. Everything works fine when i have a single computer connected with the vpn client, but as soon as i try to connect the other, both of them fail. any ideas?

Enable isakmp nat-traversal on the ASA on the client. It will open UDP port 4500 on the NAT device. so multiple clients can communicate.

  • VPN not working after 10.6.8 update

I am using checkpoint VPN-1 version SecureClient_B634006015_1 for Snow Leopard. After updating to 10.6.8 my network connection outside my local LAN is not accessible. Can't ssh, ping any outside resource. If I turn off secure client then no problems. This worked right up until I updated to 10.6.8. Anyone have any suggestions or similiar situations?
    TIA,
    Steve

Does anyone know why the Mac Cisco VPN client doesn't prompt for a user ID or Password?
I've been using the Cisco VPN client for over a year, but it looks like the 10.6.8 update broke it.  I've heard that the Apple Cisco client works, but not for me.
When I try to connect the Authenticate dialog  box comes up, but there is no where to  enter my user ID or password like I've seen on dialog snapshots on the web.  All I can do is click on OK or Cancel.  At this point the connection spins for a while and then times out.
I've tried entering both my user ID and password in the Network VPN setup dialog, just my user ID and neither my user ID or password.  Same results every time.  The samples on the web show a  prompt for both user ID and password.
I'm sure my user ID and password are correct because I've copied them from a Linux vpnc configuration that  is working on a virtual machine on my Mac.  I have navigated to the Cisco client file in /private/etc and used one of the web sites to decrypt the group password stored there.  It's the same one I entered in the Network VPN dialog box, but to be absolutely sure I copied the decrypted group password to the Network VPN setup.  Same results.

With Secure HTTP server enabled, IOS device  generates a new self-signed certificate when it reloads even if a valid  self-signed certificate already exists.
    Conditions:
When there is no CA(Certificate Authority) provided certificate on the device
    Workaround:
    Use CA provided certificate.
The resolution is to upgrade it to version 15.2(1)T or higher.
Unfortunately you would need to have SmartNet contract to be able to download the software from CCO.

  • Site-to-Site VPN Tunnel fails after upgrade 8.3(2) to 8.4(4)

    Hello Team Cisco,
I upgraded an ASA 5505 from 8.3(2) to 8.4(4) this evening.  The 5505 is a backup and used to perform testing prior to production changes. After the upgrade was complete, a VPN tunnel began to fail.  I did a limited search online to see if this was a known issue or something new.  I also reviewed the release notes but did not see anything that matched the issue I received.
My concern is that this tunnel configuration is scheduled to be deployed to the production firewalls next week after their upgrade.  But if it failed on the upgraded test unit, it may fail on the production units.
I downgraded the backup unit to 8.3(1) and verified that the tunnel indeed worked at that level.
Any input or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately not.  I'll need to upgrade and capture logs and upload for review.  I may not get to that until this afternoon or Monday of next week.
    Regards,
    Michael

  • 10.4.11 clients failing after login to 10.5.8 server

I am going crazy trying to setup our xserver this year. I had it running last year without any problems. This year, the 10.4.11 clients keep losing connection to the server after login. After login, the Home folder is there, then gone. You can see it disappear. The log reads "cannot mount /network/Servers/mac.ourdomain.edu.au/volumes/t_home/teacher error 22 (Invalid Argument)"
    Leopard clients seem fine.
I have tried everything - rebinding; reinstalling many times. I thought the path to home folders might be too long; so I made the shortname smaller to get under 89, but I've never had to do this before. Changeip returns no errors. DNS is fine - there are some errors to certain addresses "could not update - permission denied". However these machines are not losing connections. I tried a dummy set up on a different address but got no further. Can anyone post and tell me:
    1. AFP connect via : I usually use Standard to avoid Kerberos timeouts - is this the problem?
    2. Guest access: supposedly helps with Tiger clients - true?
    3. Total path to home folder - Tiger setting?
    4. Login to the server to set up sharing in Server admin using IP Address ok?
I have never had these sorts of problems. Do I just need to wipe the pre 10.5 clients? They have been set to the same IP for years so I'm wondering what I should do there. Is it DNS? I can get more log files tomorrow.
Btw, not just beginner - I have spent a fair bit of money and time on training and have had many successful set ups at school, but really struggling here. Any tips or brickbats please . . . thanks very much.

Unless things have changed, Guest Access must be on the User share on the server.
The workstation needs access to resources prior to a user actually logging in.
We use Kerberos only for our 10.4.11 and 10.5.8 clients. We also use the DHCP and DNS service on the Mac servers.
We set guest access allowed in the AFP section and in File Sharing / Protocol Options. That does not mean that you actually need to give the Guest account access, just that it must be on.

  • VPN barely working after 7.1.1 update. When will Apple release a patch to fix this?

I have an iPad 2. VPN speeds (usually around 10mb) dropped to under 1mb as soon as I updated to 7.1.1. And no way to uninstall and reinstall an older release. Lots of discussion threads circulating about this problem from some very frustrated and annoyed Apple users, some of whom are "jumping ship". I completely understand how they feel... And even more frustrating is there has been no response from Apple anywhere to these threads that I could find. So...
QUESTION FOR APPLE TO ANSWER: Is this problem being worked on and how soon do you anticipate a fix?

You aren't talking to Apple here. This is a user to user technical help forum hosted by Apple. No one here knows what Apple is doing or not doing.

  • Simple question for Apple Support, iTunes fails after immediate error message.

I am currently in a situation that after starting up iTunes (on Windows), immediately a pop-up error message tells me " Nieuwe iTunes-bibliotheek", i.e. "New iTunes Library"
After this message nothing happens anymore. Any help will be appreciated.

I don't know if any of this will help, but the first thing I'd suggest is to get a good antispyware checker and give it a go at your system. Some recent spyware has been reported by other users to shut down iTunes or prevents it from launching. From user reports, Ewido seems to be the best at catching it. You can download a free version of Ewido here.
If that doesn't cure the problem, try deleting the iTunes preference files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    and
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Data\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find them. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.) Delete them. This will force iTunes to run the setup assistance the next time you run it and you'll have to go back and set any preferences you've changed from the default.
    Hope this helps.

  • LDAP Client busted after 10.6.5 update...

I had ldap lookup working through contacts on to my corp ldap server. after the update, i noticed that the port config had changed from 389 to 3268 and now none of the contact looks are working. I noticed this issue last week and didn't connect it to 10.6.5 until today when after restoring and regaining ldap, I allowed the update and promptly lost ldap and noticed the ports being auto-magically being changed for me.

I went back to 10.6.4 and it works. I was trying to get davmail working and was playing around with different base search options and all of a sudden Apple LDAP quit working. nothing seems to get it back short of a restore, but that is getting rather old. I am not sure how anything that i am doing could wack this out. unless there is something cached? Tbird works reliably, i just would rather use outlook 2011 in imap mode with ldap.
doing a wireshark trace i notice that the two apps are using different filter strings for the ldap search. the Tbird works for me while AB filter does not. Does anyone know if they are stored in a config file someplace where they can be tweaked.
    Thunderbird: Filter: (|(|(|(mail=granger*)(cn=*granger*))(givenName=*granger*))(sn=*granger)) *works*
    Addressbook: Filter: (|(|(|(givenname=granger)(sn=granger*))(mail=granger*))(cn=granger)) *fails*
I am in way over my head here, any help would be appreciated.
    Rob
