Applet & File Class

Hello Java Fans!
I have an applet that is embedded in an HTML file. The applet is
just a button that launches a Frame Window. Now the Frame window
has a 'File Class' object. If I test it in the appletviewer
everything works fine and I get the:
File length(), path, absolute path etc ... to be displayed in
the 'List Object' Window.
However, if I test it in the IE Browser, the Frame opens fine but
no information is diplayed at all.
Could somebody give me a hint please? Does it have something to do
with File permissions maybe because it's launched from a browser?
Thanks a bunch in advance. A.

Hi,
Applets will always have a problem when they are trying to execute an external program, or a file on the user's machine. A security problem will occur.
Check in the systray down on the right on a Windows machine and pull up the java console. This should show all exceptions that occurr in an applet.
You will probably have to get your applet signed. See help about signing applets, or if you are trying to get the applet off the remote server where your code is stored on, rmi or a client/server program can be used to get your file.

Hello Java Fans!!
I was wondering if anyone knows how to make Applets read Files

Hi,
How about accessing a directory on the web server, where the applet file resides? I would like to display
the contents of some web server directories on the client's browser in an applet, but I keep running into
the applet security restrictions. I am using Java 1.1 as my language version, this way my users don't have
to install the Java plug-in for their browser. I would rather not use signed applets or anything like that.

• Applet HelloWorld class HelloWorld could not be loaded.

Dear Colleagues
I am very new to Java, but have followed the advice of a number of people here and read one or two tutorials.
I thought I had managed to write my first HelloWorld! application/applet in that I can see HelloWorld.java and HelloWorld.class in the bin folder in MS-DOS, but once I had coded the HTML page to view it (both in Netscape and Explorer) I received the following message in the status bar:
Applet HelloWorld class HelloWorld could not be loaded.
The HTML page has been written exactly as it should be and the HelloWorldApp class file, the HelloWorldApp (File for Forte for Java), the HelloWorld (File for Forte for Java), and the HTML page are all located together in the bin folder of the jdk1.3.1 directory.
In my C:\Autoexec.bat file I have the following:
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T2
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS

Any advice on what I am doing wrong would be appreciated.
Thank you.

The could be several things here that are the problem. Firstly doe the applet runb using the appletviewer. If so then there is problably a problem with the HTML code you are using to call the Applet. If the HTML file esides in a different directory than the .class file then make sure the 'CODEBASE' field points to the directory containing the .class file. Can you post your HTML for us to see?

• How can I rewrite the java.io.file class to a custom file class?

Hi All!
Im new to Java. Well, I did some experiments with small Applets. Because it is not allowed to use Files in an unsigned Applet, I need to know, how I can manage to overwrite the java.io.File class. The background: I have to port some Applications which need file access into Applets.
I think it is necessary to create a class with the same signature then the Java.io.File that stores the information in an database on the Webserver or read information from there. Then overload the java.io.File with my custom file class.
Is this possible and, if so, how?
Thanks!

Hi yawmark !
Thanks for the quick answer! My idea to store the filecontent into a database is caused by the plan to make the application-port independent from the workstation executing it. So it would be a nice feature storing the "files" into a database.

• JRE 1.7 / Java Plug-in - Long delay in retrieving the applet File(JAR) due to a request to the Domain Controller(on port 53)

Description:
A specific group of users/customers (using Windows7 OS with IE and FireFox web browsers) are facing problems with retrieving the applet File, after they upgraded the JRE on the system(PC) to JRE 1.7.0_25-b17 from JRE version 1.6.0_29-b11.
With JRE 1.7.0_25-b17 it is noticed that when the Java plugin requests for the applet File; it sends a request to the Domain Controller of the user, which causes a delay of 2 to 5 minutes and sometimes hangs. The problem occurs consistently.
The current temporary workaround for this group of users is to use JRE version 1.6.0_29-b11.
Problem analysis:
To investigate the problem the below steps were executed:
1) Collected the Java console outputbelow details from the user's system. (The complete output is not posted due to lengthy content, though can be added further to this post if required.)
(a) Works fine with JRE version 1.6.0_29-b11. Kindly refer to Java console output in the code ‘section A’ towards the end of this post.
(b) The problem occurs with problem with JRE version 1.7.0_25-b17. Kindly refer to Java console output in the code ‘section B’ towards the end of this post. The step where the problem is observed, is indicated as(##<comment>##).
2) The network settings in the user's browser was checked. Internet Options > Connections > LAN setting
The configured option is 'Use automatic configuration script' and the value is http://www.userAppX.com/proxy.pac
This configuration remains the same irrespective of the JRE version in use.
3) The network settings in the Java Control Panel was checked.
The used/selected option is "Use browser settings", although values for 'Use proxy server' and 'use automatic proxy configuration script' are filled-in as 'user-proxy.com' and 'http://www.userAppX.com/proxy.pac' respectively.
This configuration remains the same irrespective of the JRE version in use.
4) The proxy PAC file was checked and debugging was done for the request 'https://myAppletHost.com/download/...'. The FindProxyForUrl function (including the conditions defined in it, for the hostname and domain checks) returns PROXY user-proxy.com:80
5) The user also tried the below
a. Changed the option in the network settings in the browser to 'Proxy server' with Address 'user-proxy.com' and Port '80'
b. Restarted the browser.
c. Tried with Java Plug-in 1.6.0_29, JRE version 1.6.0_29-b11. There was no problem and no request to the Domain Controller of the user.
d. Tried with Java Plug-in 10.40.2.43, JRE version 1.7.0_40-b43. The problem occurs with the delay and a request to the Domain Controller of the user is observed.
Kindly refer to Java console output in the code ‘section C’ towards the end of this post.
6) The user also tried setting the below property in the Java Control panel; restarted the browser, and try with JRE 1.7.0_40-b43. The problem stil persists.
-Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true
7) The Global Policy Management of the Domain Controller was verified by the user. It has GPO for proxy setting but nothing related to Java security.
Questions:
The problem seems be specific to a particular (user) environment setup, and the user faces the problem when using JRE 1.7.
We would like to know if the issue is in the (user) environment setup or in JRE 1.7.
Could you please help with information/ideas/suggestions to identify the root cause and solution for this problem?

• Problem with file.listFiles() of File class??

Hi all friends,
Iam facing with one peculiar problem,Iam using [file.listfiles()] method of File class in my program and this method of file class introduced in Java2.Now when Iam runing on Mac OS classic(8 to 9)[it is my client requirement they can't change Mac OS classic to Mac OS X] it is giving me error file.listfiles() not found in java.io package coz in Mac classic I have used MRJ2.2.6(for runtime) and MRJ SDK2.2 which is based on jdk1.1.8 and this method[listfiles()] added in java2.But now for me I can't change this method in program coz it is a big code and I have to change lot of things in my program.Can any one plz tell me can i find any (java.io) package of java2 seperately in the from of .jar or .zip so that i can keep it in my MRJCLASSES folder and from there I can import it in my program.Eagerly waiting for reply.
Regards

Just use File.list(). There are minor semantical differences but they are easy to work around.

You can use Jakarta's net-package to connect to a FTP server.
Download it here:
http://jakarta.apache.org/site/downloads/downloads_commons-net.cgi
Here's a small demo:
import org.apache.commons.net.ftp.*;
public class FTPTest {
private boolean isConnected;
private FTPClient client;
public FTPTest() {
isConnected = false;
connect();
private void connect() {
String server = "server.org";
String username = "user";
String password = "password";
client = new FTPClient();
try {
client.connect(server);
client.login(username, password);
String[] files = client.listNames();
for(int i = 0; i < files.length; i++) {
System.out.println(files);
isConnected = true;
disconnect();
catch(Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
private void disconnect() {
if(isConnected) {
try {
client.disconnect();
isConnected = false;
catch(Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
public static void main(String[] args) {
new FTPTest();

• 'Basic' external actionscript file/class usage

Hey All,
I'm a bit baffled by something that should, in my humble opinion, be a piece of cake...
The setup is really easy. A simple application with a single textinput, a button and a text component.
When the button is clicked a function is called that sets the text from the inputfield to the text component.
code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
public function click(inputText:String):void {
outPutTxt.text = inputText;
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:TextInput x="10" y="10" id="inputTxt"/>
<mx:Button x="178" y="10" label="Button" id="Btn" click="{click(inputTxt.text)}"/>
<mx:Text x="251" y="12" text="Text" id="outPutTxt"/>
</mx:Application>
As I said, really easy.
What I want to do is put the function 'click' into an external actionscript file or class. And still be able to, from within the external file, modify the outPutTxt stuff.
I'm aware that I could create a public bindable variable inside of the external file and then bind the outPutTxt to that variable, but I would really like to be able to 'simply' force the value...
Is that possible? If yes: how plix
If it's not possible, I'd like to know as well! And in that case, how would I then re-use the same instance of a class/file in multiple seperate components? Say I got a 'login' thingie where a user logs in (data stored externally in a seperate actionscript file/class) and I want to re-use that information on other pages... Or is this done automatically?
Any and all comments/answers are higly appreciated!
Pieter

Hey Levancho,
thanks for your answer!! Much appreciated.
However, the code you proposed threw an error...
Errormessage:
ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property outPutTxt not found on controls.Control and there is no default value.
at controls::Control/btnClick()[C:\...\FlexTest_03\src\controls\Control.as:13]
at FlexTest_03/__Btn_click()[C:\...\FlexTest_03\src\FlexTest_03.mxml:11]
So I tried something else where I bind the text in my OutPutTxt to a variable inside of the external class file.
Code:
Class:
package controls
public class Control
[Bindable]
public var outPutText:String = "";
public function Control()
public function btnClick(inputText:String):void {
this.outPutText = inputText;
Mxml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import controls.Control;
[Bindable]
private var control:Control = new Control();
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:TextInput x="10" y="10" id="inputTxt"/>
<mx:Button x="178" y="10" label="Button" id="Btn" click="{control.btnClick(inputTxt.text)}"/>
<mx:Text x="251" y="12" id="outPutTxt" text="{control.outPutText}"/>
</mx:Application>
And this basically did what I wanted to do... so I just need to do some major binding between my application and the classes I'll be using for my business logic.
Now for something else entirely...
Is there a way for me to pass the instance of my class between flex components?
Pieter
