Applet Security loading & running on local PC

I understnd the limits of an Applet loaded from a server to a local PC. What I am trying to do is test my Applet (JApplet actually) as I create it. I have some GIF and JPG files that need to be loaded from the same DIR that the JApplets HTML file is in. When I run the Applet in appletviewer it works fine, when I run it in IE5.5 I get security errors and the Applet fails to initialize.
I have read the online section on applet security. It seems to me that my applet 'thinks' it is being loaded from a remote server.
The online HTML talks about a properties file that can be edited to include the rights to read and/or write to specific local files. Anybody know the name of this file ??
It should not make a difference that I am doing my work on a W2K Server, should it ???
Any specific help would be greatly appreciated !!

java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission CHR.gif read)
All I try to do in my code is place a GIF as am Icon on a JButton.
//add buttons to controlPanel
        for(int i=0;i<siteNames.length; i++){
            icon = new ImageIcon(icons);
JButton b = new JButton(siteNames[i],icon);
b.addActionListener(listener);
b.setActionCommand(siteNames[i]);
controlPanel.add(b);
Where icons[i] is a string listing of GIF files. The code works fine in IE5.5 without the icons on the buttons. Only when I put the icons on the buttons do I get the access denied error.
Any Ideas ????
Could it be the fact that I am doing my coding and testing on a W2K Server ????

  • Applet Security (cant write to local drive)

    Hi, I am developing a simple applet on a local machine and I want this applet to have the ability to a file somewhere on the local hard drive.
    I've added the code to write to a file data.txt, when the code executes I get the exception error:
    com.ms.security.SecurityExceptionEx[Scribbler.saveData]: cannot access file data.txt
         at com/ms/security/permissions/FileIOPermission.check (FileIOPermission.java)
    Is there anyway I can allow this applet access to my harddrive?
    Thanks very much, chris.

    You need to sign the JAR containing your Applet.
    Search these forums for "signing applet" - this question gets asked and answered regularly and there are some very comprehensive answers rattling around somewhere.

  • Signed applets won't run @ web, only locally

    Hey, all elitist java folk, here is one for you:
    I have succeded in creating a signed, and an un-signed java applet - both run well locally. The signed applet, writes to a local file.
    Both are merely proof of concept.
    So, here is the deal:
    I upload both to a webserver (one of those where you get 50Mb for free) via ftp (not ASCII, binary transfer), and only the unsigned will run in my browsers (Opera, FF, MSIE tested).
    The signed one writes to the screen: "Could not instantiate."
    I belive the problem lies in the HTML, which is very basic but still works locally. I don't have any clsid-thingy, is this nessecary? Where do I read about this?
    HTML that (should) load the signed applet:
    <html>
    <applet code="localfile.class" archive="localfile.jar"  width="300" height="300">
    </applet>
    </body>
    </html>As previously said, the unsigned applet work both from the web and locally, so I won't post any more html here...
    Btw, I am not interessed in editing any policy-file; my signed applet should work "out-of-the-box" for any java-enabled browser on the Internet.
    All I want is for the browser to load the signed java applet, ask user for certificate confirmation, and run it... Just like with http://jupload.sourceforge.net/applet-basic.html , which also access local filesystem.

    If you open the Java Console what does it say?
    There shouldn't be any difference in loading the applet locally or from the webserver... presuming the HTML and jar files and classnames and stuff are all correct relative to both locations.

  • Security problem when signed applet dynamically load plugins

    Hi!
    I have one problem : "security problem when signed applet dynamically load plugins"
    This is the scenario:
    the main program [app.jar]
    . contain applet and shared library (interface & implement of common class)
    . it is signed and run normally on browser
    . it can draw image loaded from other URL [ex] http://bp1.blogger.com/image.jpg
    . the image loader is in the shared library
    . dynamically load amazon.jar through URLClassLoader and reflection
    the plugin [amazon.jar]
    . search amazon product [ex] Harry Potter book
    . draw image on applet
    . use image loader from shared library, BUT CANNOT LOAD IMAGE
    The question: "Why it cannot load image, because the image loader is in the shared library which has been signed and working?" I tried to sign the amazon.jar too, but it did not work.
    Your reply would be very helpful. Thank you.

    I have my UI written in JavaScript.When I click a button,it opens a window showing the different components(images) and an applet containing a tree structure.The applet code is written in java
    This is working fine and the applet is loading properly when I use JVM1.4. But there is a problem when I use JVM1.3.1_09.The images appear broken and the applet doesnot load.(When I click on one of the broken images,the images appear correctly but the applet still doesn't load)
    Can anyone tell me what could be the reason behind this behavior??

One thing I do know is that the JNLPAppletLauncher since plug-in2 architecture JREs allow hooking into JNLP services. Try using web start to launch the applet.

  • Class Not Found Exception - applet won't run anywhere outside of IDE

    I have an applet that runs perfectly in the netbeans IDE, but won't run from command prompt (I'm using windows) or from a browser. I've been banging my head against the wall for a few days on this one. Here's the HTML I'm using:
    <applet width="400" height="525" code="musicapplet.class" archive="crypticgraffiti.jar">
    <param name="bgcolor" value="ffffff"> <param name="fontcolor" value="000000">
    </param> </param> Your browser is not Java enabled. </applet>
    Here is the structure of the jar file's contents:
    META-INF/
    META-INF/MANIFEST.MF
    com/
    com/crypticgraffiti/
    com/crypticgraffiti/music/musicapplet
    com/crypticgraffiti/music/GetNotes.class

    com/crypticgraffiti/music/Mode.class
    com/crypticgraffiti/music/MusicCreator.class
    com/crypticgraffiti/music/OctaveTransformer.class
    com/crypticgraffiti/music/Phrase.class
    musicapplet/MusicApplet$playerThread.class
    musicapplet/MusicApplet.class
    (Musicapplet.class is the main class)
    When I attempt to run from command prompt, I get:
    "Error: Could not find or load main class crypticgraffiti.MusicApplet"
    When I attempt to load via html:
    "basic: load: class musicapplet.class not found.

    I have tried every possible variation for the 'code' element of the applet tag (package.mainclass.class, mainclass, mainclass.class, etc). I have also tried compiling with JDK 1.6 and this didn't change anything. I've tried clearing out the cache of temporary files using the java control panel settings, and have verified that my browser can run other applets using JRE 6 and 7.
    I've tried some different ways of distributing the applet, also: putting all the class files in the folder with the html file, putting the classes in a source folder in the same folder as the html file, and finally putting a jar in the same folder as the html file (which really seems the simplest).
    Any help at all would be most appreciated! This applet is a very cool and original music creating app that draws heavily on the JFugue API. It's a shame that I can't get it online for people to play with!

    Please note that class names are case sensitive so "MusicApplet" is not same as "Musicapplet" or "musicapplet". Your applet tag should have fully qualified class name (without quotes) and should look like this:
    <applet width=400 height=525 code=musicapplet.MusicApplet archive="crypticgraffiti.jar">
    </applet>
    The JAR should be in the same directory as your HTML file. While launching from command line, you can also check if your JAR file is getting included in classpath.

    basic: Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: a.classIt seems as though it's trying to load the applet from the actual directory, instead of the JAR. Any ideas on why this is happening? Thanks in advance for your help.
    Also, the applet is located at http://io9labs.com/poke/

    I'm using Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 on Windows XP with SP2. I tried running it with IE7 and it gives me the same exact problem. It can't be my browser because it loads JAR'ed applets on any other webpage just fine.
    I tried it with a non-obfuscated JAR, and it STILL gives me the same error. Do you have any ideas as to why it would choose to ignore the archive attribute?
    EDIT: I think it might be because I signed it improperly, lemme try that.
    EDIT2: Nope, still doesnt work
    EDIT3: Problem solved, it was because the JAR needed a unique name, and i already had a jar of the same name in my cache.

    <Connector protocol="HTTP/1.1" SSLEnabled="true"

    I have added the https site which I am trying to access in the exception list of both the browser and JAVA control Panel. Cleared the cache of both and have also deleted the user certificate to ensure the latest certificate gets downloaded.
    Kindly help to know the resolution steps.

    I was able to remove the above issue by unchecking and checking back the "Enable java content on browser" check box in the java control panel.
    Still I am facing issues when the application is used by external set of users.
    I observe that there are 2 sets of exceptions
    1. Connection timeout
    2. Class not getting loaded

  • Applet showDocument not working for local files!!

    Hello:
    I wrote a signed applet that is generates html files in user temp folder (for my Win 7: C:\Users\ren\AppData\Local\Temp\jTmp\ )
    The applet is supposed to display the html files in browser by using showDocument().
    I tested it on firefox 25 and IE9 enabling pop-up windows
    However, it does nothing. Not even an exception.
    The applet fails  when running from web (but works in c:\)
    For the case, it happens the same with oracle's sample: Displaying Documents in the Browser (The Java&amp;trade; Tutorials &amp;gt;                    Deployment &amp;gt; Java …
    In this applet, if you input a local file (file:///c:/ etc) , it won't open it.
    I supposed showDocument was not subject to security restrictions, but seems the new rule is:
    -applets running locally will display all pages (web/local)
    -applets running from the web will display only web pages.
    My applet used to work fine, but in some jre7 upgrade it was broken!!
    Is this a bug or a new security issue?
    Thanks in advance!

    Did you get this resolved..
    I am using Internet Explorer v. 5.2 on Mac OS X v.10.2.8. I have successfully run an applet, using jre 1.3.1 which implements the "showDocument" method and opens a new page.
    Could you post your code..

    Looks like you are using an algorithm that is not supported by the jre.
    Caused by: java.security.NoSuchAlgorithmException: Cannot find any provider supporting RSA/ECB/PKCS1Padding
    You might try and read this here on how to install the PKCS1 at the java client.
    http://www.denison.edu/mathsci/mcurcsm2003/papers/JavaCrypto.pdf
    http://www.bouncycastle.org/
    Or you can create a certificate with keytool and convert to pkcs12 to be used with IIS (self signed)
