Applets and accessing files confusion

Hi
I am confused about applets and their abilty to access files.
I know that applets cannot access files on a users hard drive until given pemission but if i design an applet that needs access to files on the server where it is running will it be able to read and write those files in the same location as the applet without the need to set permissions?
Any feedback would be great
Neil

The applet is very much able to read files from the server. This is easiest done by creating a URL and opening a stream to it:
URL url = new URL(getCodeBase(), "file.dat");
InputStream in = url.openStream();
// read from the stream...
in.close();
Saving files to the server is also possible without setting permissions but it's a bit harder. In short, you need some sort of server that accepts a connection and saves what you send it to disk. The server can be eg. a servlet, a database or a FTP server.

  • Office 2010 & 2007 - Excel and Access File Locking Out On the Network With Multiple Users

    This is also posted in the Office 2010 - IT Pro General Discussions, but was suggested to repost here, since a definitive answer was not found.
    Hi,
    An issue that's happening is that Excel and Access files are locking on the network. We're currently using Office 2007 and 2010.
    Here are some different scenarios that are happening:
    When opening the file it is locked out by “User X” which is the person that has the file locked out and no one else can open the file.
    When opening the file it is locked out by “User Y” which is NOT the actual person, but is locked out by “User X” and no one else can access the file.
    When opening the file  it is locked out by “…another user” which is generic and no one else can access the file.
    The two more common events are incident 1 and 2 with 3 happening the less common.
    This message will continue until the sessions are closed through computer management on the file server.
    The file server is running Windows Server 2003.
    This does happen on both Windows XP and Windows 7 clients.
    This does happen for users using Office 2007 and Office 2010.
    There are two sets of Office 2010 Users when it comes to patches. Everyone has the most current patches with Office 2010 SP2 while anyone that has Microsoft Project 2010 is using all the current update before Office 2010 SP2.
    All users that are using Office 2007 have all the current patches and service packs.
    Another variable is that we have users that will leave a file open on the network for 3+ days and after a while it will lock the file out.
    Also we have Shadow Copy that runs daily on the system which I'm not for sure if that impacts anything if a file is opening during that time.
    Any ideas on how to mitigate the lock out issues would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Binary Process
    Edit November 12, 2013: This issue can occur if and if not another person actually has the file open. If the person doesn't have the file open then there is a hung connection which needs to be disconnected by going to the Computer Management of the File
    server.

    Hi Binary,
    I know that the description of the hotfix does not relate to the issue. The purpose is to install it for upgrading SMB related file.
    A similar issue I encountered before:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/b7fcc59b-52d9-4a02-863a-1a529bcb8cb1/temp-doc-etc-files-dont-close-after-a-file-closes-this-causes-locked-files?forum=winserverfiles
    It is resolved by upgrading SMB files so maybe it will help on your case.

  • Creating Folder and Accessing Files from Folders in mobile phone

    Hello Friends,
    I am doing my project where I need to create folders and accessing files from those folders in java enabled mobile phones.But I do not know the required tasks for this.Any type of help is highly appreciated.
    Greeting
    Saadi

    You have to get the classname of the Items you receive from getitems.
    There you have only to look for Folder.CLASS_NAME. Example:
    ifsFol sorted by names in ascending order (names of folders and files)
    String[] sort_attributes = {"NAME"};
    //sort will be ascending
    boolean [] sort_orders = {true};
    oracle.ifs.common.SortSpecification sort = new oracle.ifs.common.SortSpecification(sort_attributes, sort_orders);
    ifsFol.setSortSpecification(sort);
    PublicObject[] contents = ifsFol.getItems();
    System.out.println("Here are the names of the items in folder: ");
    for (int i=0; i < contents.length; i++) {
    if (contents.getClassname().equals(Folder.CLASS_NAME)) {
    System.out.println(contents[i].getName());

  • Unable to view and access files

    Since updating to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro (early 2011), I have been unable to view and access files on my time capsule. I can still access my backups through Time Machine, but not able to view or access the files that I saved onto the device (by method of copy and paste from my laptop hard drive to the TM). Before the "upgrade" to Yosemite I used to open Time Machine, close it, and then the icon of the TM (just like a typical external hard drive) would show up on the desktop. I would double click and open the TM icon and be able to view all the files that I saved onto the hard drive of the TM, as well as a folder that said "Time Machine Backups." Now, all I see now is my MacBrook Pro Icon and a folder named "File Server." and when I double click on either icon there is nothing to view. Please help!

    Try this..
    Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup.. I strongly recommend the following setup.
    Factory reset universal
    Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
    N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
    ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
    Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
    eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
    Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
    In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
    Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
    You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
    However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. If you use ethernet also do it for ethernet.. this is important.
    You can see the summary of the same thing from apple here.
    OS X Yosemite: Connect to shared computers and file servers on a network
    I have given somewhat more specific instructions which I believe are important.
    With the TC manually mounted can you access the files??
    If not please tell me and I will continue to think how to change permissions.
    But please if you can at least open a directory and tell me what the permissions are currently set to.
    eg. This is a directory on my TC.

  • Infobus applet and temporary files

    Hi,
    I have made an infobus applet and deploy it with the OAS407.
    Now I have seen, that each time I load the applet from the

    prefix jar_cache (for example: jar_cache40989.tmp).
    There is no problem with creating but there is a problem with
    deleting because there is no mechanism for automatic deleting.
    So I have to delete these files manually but I think that this
    is unuseable for end-user.
    Does anybody know how to bypass this problem ?

    I ran into the same problem when I built an applet that uses DAC and runs the app module in the downloaded applet. The Java plugin 1.2.2 is creating these files in TEMP and these files are equal in size to the support jar and zip files downloaded to the browser. You can easily verify this by comparing file sizes (use the Properties facility when you right click a Windows file sname to see its exact size in bytes). The plugin does not delete these files when you exit the browser and thus re-creates them every time you restart the browser and access the applet from the web server potentially filling the user's disk.
    SUN has fixed this problem with the 1.3 plugin. Ater downloading and installing the 1.3 plugin, you must edit the applet's HTML file to add two new PARAM options: "cache_option" and "cache_archive". See http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/guide/misc/appletcaching.html for instructions (a document titled "Applet caching in Java Plug-in") on doing this. This basically tells the plugin to use its own caching, instead of the browser's and doing this, the jar files created in the user's TEMP directory are deleted when you kill the browser.
    However, since Jdeveloper is not certified with Java 2 v1.3, I ran into problems with code that works under the 1.2.2 plugin. The applet no longer runs once its been downloaded: I get a permissions error in jbo.logging.show and jbo.logging.trace; to wit: (java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.sql.SQLPermission setLog). So switching to the 1.3 plugin will fix the buildup of jar files in TEMP problem; but your applets may no longer work! Best to wait until Jdeveloper is certified with 1.3 then you can run the 1.3 plugin successfully.

  • Applet security -- accessing files over the Web.

    I guess the topic pretty much sums up my question..
    I have an applet and I want to read a file from over the web.
    After creating a URL, I try to retrieve an inputstream by calling openStream() but I get all the java.security.AccessControlException: access denied rubbish..
    How do I get it working ?

    The applet can only read data from the server where it is saved. For security purposes applets have limited capabilities. They can't write data to a remote hard drive or read data from remote machines. A way around this is to create a "trusted applet". Basically what it does is informs any machine you are trying to access that you wrote this applet and are responsible for any negative outcome. There is a tutorial provided by Sun that can explain this better than I can. Here is the link:
    http://java.sun.com/security/signExample/index.html
    Good luck.

  • Can I connect an externa hard drive and access files from 2 or more computers wirelessly?

    Is there a way to connect an external hard drive to my linksys modem and access the files wirelessly by 2 or more computers?
    I have a wireless G wrt54G modem working on windows XP a desktop and laptop on my home system. I have a WD “my book” external hard drive with a usb interface. My modem does not have a USB interface.
    At work I also have 4 laptops  using XP and vista and looking to have them all access an external hard drive and printers. I have not selected a hard drive for the work system.
    If yes can I add 2 or more printers and print form all connected computers?
    If yes, is it possible to access the files of the external hard drive (home system) via the internet?
    Thanks in advance for all your help

    First, your WRT54G is a router, not a modem. Different function.
    Yes, you can  "connect an external hard drive... and access the files wirelessly by 2 or more computers," just not that external hard drive. You need one that supports network attachment, with an ethernet connection.
    And you can print to printers from various computer, again if the printers are made to support that.
    The answer to your last question is maybe. Oh, it's definitely possible, but may require learning about static IP addresses, dynamic DNS, firewalls, port forwarding, file sharing...

  • Workflow API: adding and accessing file Attachments to a Human Task

    Hi there,
    I am using the Workflow Services Java API (11.1.1) for SOA Suite to access and manipulate human tasks. I would like to be able to access and add file attachments to existing human tasks. I am using the methods provided in the AttachmentType interface.
    When adding an attachment, the problem I am running into is that an attachment does created and associated with the task, however it is empty and has no content. I have attempted both setting the input stream of the attachment, as well as the content string and in each case have had no success.
    I have successfully added and accessed an attachment using the worklist application, however when trying to access the content of this attachment through code I receive an object with mostly null/0 values throughout, apart from the attachment name.
    As the API's are not overly rich in documentation I may well be using them incorrectly. I would really appreciate any help/suggestions/alternatives in dealing with BPEL task attachments.
    Thanks
    The code I am using resembles:
    List attachments = taskWithAttachments.getAttachment();
    for(Object o : attachments){
    AttachmentType a = (AttachmentType) o;
    String content = a.getContent(); +// NULL+
    InputStream str = a.getInputStream(); +// NULL+
    String name = a.getName(); +// Has the attachment name+
    String mime = a.getMimeType(); +// Has the mime type+
    long size = a.getSize(); +// 0+

  • Please help restore DMG missing partition and access file vault.

    I am quite emotional at the moment, if anyone can help me access my files, pictures of my baby daughter and important documents.. I would be extremely grateful and willing do make a donation via paypal.
    I have a 160 GB hard drive, which was partitioned as 30GB Spare and 130GB with my operating system and user files, including my filevault user directory.
    My computer was downloading movies which filled up the 130GB partition, most of the 130GB is contained in my personal filevault user directory, my computer became very slow and unresponsive and i tried to free up space by deleting files which i no longer needed.
    The machine became slow and un-responsive and required a number of forceful shut downs and restarts until the machine would no longer boot up, I inserted the OSX CD and attempted to boot from CD and use disc utility which now only displays my 30GB storage space, I was forced to install OSX on the remaining 30GB partition.
    Now running OSX on the 30GB partition i used DISK DRILL to scan my hard disk for the missing 130GB partition which it did and i was able to save this as a DMG file to a external hard disk, now i am able to get this DMG to mount in the OSX i am running on the spare 30GB space, however i am not able to access the majority of the data inside the file vaulted user account.
    I would like to know, would it be possible to restore the missing partition, as it remains on the HD but seems to be hidden.
    Or is there somehow i can login to the user account on the mounted DMG ?
    I am not very familiar with using terminal and would be extremely grateful for any advice or support leading to the recovery of my files.

    Is there anyway to restore and boot the missing partition ?
    Probably not.     You've now deleted the partition.  It was probably useless anyway, though.
    When i run disk drill or other disk recovery tools i am able to see the partition including including the files and my personal sparsebundle.
    But you can't open the sparse bundle, much less see any of the files inside it, right?
    Since you've already recovered the (probably-damaged) sparse bundle containing your encrypted home folder, you'll have to work with it.
    I'd strongly recommend making another copy of that on another external HD and putting that "on the shelf" before doing anything else to it.   I suspect you have little chance of recovery, but don't take the risk of further damage.
    You haven't answered my earlier questions:
    Have you tried to run Repair Disk on either the original or copied partition?
    If that doesn't help, this might:  http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/fixfilevault.html
    Do you have Time Machine backups?
    Obviously, now that the partition has been deleted, you can't run repair disk on it, but try it on the recovered disk image.
    You need more expertise than either Christopher or I have.  Since Apple no longer uses "legacy" File Vault, it will be more difficult for them to help, too.
    Is your Mac covered by AppleCare?  If so, give them a call.
    If not, your nearest Apple Store Genius Bar might be able to help:  http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
    Or check for an Apple Authorized Service Provider: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434?viewlocale=en_US
    If not, one of them may know of an outside service than can help.  That will be quite expensive.

  • Stumbling Through Classic "Type," "Creator," and General File Confusion

    I have been searching the Internet trying to make sense of some Classic nonsensical (to me) inconsistencies between the information in the Get Info panels for the files and the "Type" and "Creator" headings as shown in HexEdit. One of the articles I read online was this one:
    http://arstechnica.com/reviews/2q00/macos-qna/macos-x-qa-2.html
    After reading that I sort of understand that the Finder is supposed to assign apps to documents based by using a sort of logical process. But here is the problem, which exists throughout the System Folder/Extensions Folder and elswhere such as the System Folder/Preferences folder:
    I'll use just one example. "Apple Packet Media Access" is an Extension. "Get Info" says it is an "Internet Document," to be opened by the "Internet" application. But if I open it in HexEdit, the header of the HexEdit document lists the "Type" as "thng," and the creator as "ufox." The text portion of HexEdit also says that "The Apple Packet Media Access extension is required for mounting Packet-Written data CDs on your computer." Clearly this has nothing to do with the "Internet" app, and therefore the Get Info box is wrong. This is just one example of many extensions (and other files in the System Folder) that are incorrectly associated with an application.
    My problem is that in order to "cure" this problem by selecting "other" in the "Open With" dialog box, I have to select an application. And what application should I select to open "Apple Packet Media Access?" OR, is this not a document at all, but rather an application?
    How is an ignorant user like myself to determine which is the correct app to open a document which is clearly associated with an incorrect app?
    Or should I even care? I wouldn't care, except for other problems I am having between Classic and older programs.

    At times, since the transition from OS 9.2.2 to OS X 10.0 ~ 10.5 versions I have
    looked into the OS 9 system (in non-dual-boot iMac running Tiger 10.4.11) and
    have managed to get more information than via OS X 'get info' and had done
    this by having more than just the OS9 app open in Classic, under OS X control.
    There is a way (but do not have the time to delve back into retracing my steps)
    to use more of OS 9.2 even in Classic, where you can't really use OS 9 Finder.
    And it is the OS 9 Finder that actually gave you access to most OS 9's goods.
    OS X does not have anything quite like the Finder as arrived at by OS 9.1.
    And when you need to have certain things working in OS 9, it is better to try
    and have all those items of the same era; as limited as it can be compared
    to the fully functional OS X system, or the Classic9 running under OS X.
    The applications for OS 9 that can be seen as Classic compatible say Classic
    in the Get Info window of X; some will work anyway but not fully supported.
    For the real deal, in other instances on these discussions, it has been suggested
    to get an older Mac running native OS 9.2.2 and have that separate from OS X.
    As I had mentioned before, the OS X ability to say what an OS 9 part may run
    with is only referenced from the point of view of OS X; it may string together a
    path to run something or another using Classic to control OS 9 System + Apps.
    But that is a far cry from the actual meal deal of OS 9.2.2 seeing its own content.
    There are groups of OS 9.2.2 & Before users out there and perhaps you should
    contact them for more information on gaining further insight into Classic controls.
    {With Classic9 running under OS X, often with extensions off or very reduced,
    any reference to what resources are being used would be clouded by a real
    lack of content; so OS X would be having to do a backward compatible duty.}
    PS: I have a nice and clean iMac G4 17" 800MHz dual-boot computer with
    SuperDrive, 1024MB RAM, airport card, 80GB HDD; incl. speakers, mouse
    keyboard, power cord and OS X 10.4. Too bad you aren't closer to here...!
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How can I upload and access files to the iCloud?

    Hello,
    I am using iCloud on my MacBook Pro (OS X Lion) and iPhone 4 (iOS 5). Everything works just fine, but I'd like to put miscallenous files to the cloud as well, like .zip, .dat, .txt, .ini, .doc. On my MacBook I have put them all into the folder "Documents".
    Question 1: Are my files, now that I put them to the Documents folder, in the Cloud already?
    Question 2: How can I now access and view those files on my iPhone? (I used MobileMe before, and there I used a app called "iDisk",)
    I'm really lokking forward to your replies.
    Pascal

    Don't whine, there is a workaround, better than the idisk.
    Download an app you wish to work as your iDisk. It is essential that this app supports iCloud. I personally prefer the GoodReader app.
    Go to your /Users/<root folder name>/Library/Mobile Documents folder and locate the folder the app uses to store your files.
    Create a folder in the "Documents" folder of the folder you found. I named that folder iCloud docs. You can name it whatever you want... e.g iDisk
    (now let's add some style) download the icon I created.
    Open the icon I created with preview and press cmd + a and then cmd + c .
    Select the "iCloud docs" folder you created, or whatever you named it, press cmd + i
    Select the folder icon on the top left and press cmd + v
    Select again the folder and press cmd + L
    Drag & drop the alias folder wherever you need it
    or
       8. If you want to be supercool you can also drag & drop the original (not the alias) folder on your dock.
    Hope you enjoy the new super cool iDisk.
    Cheers.
