Appletviewer on Windows XP

Hi,
I am using XP Pro, and have jdk1.6.0_13 installed. I'm working on an applet, and would like to use appletviewer to debug it. It's not loading, though - absolutely nothing happens when I tell appletviewer to open my .html file. ("appletviewer test.html") No error message either on the command line or in the Java console, it just returns to the command line without having done anything.
If I type "appletviewer" into the command line, I get a nice Java error message telling me I need to tell appletviewer what to open. So it's definitely finding appletviewer - appletviewer just isn't doing anything when I call it.
Here's the code in my HTML document:
<html>
<head>
<title>Test</title>
</head>
<body>
<applet code="reading.class"></applet>
</body>
</html>... from what I can tell, appletviewer should be able to detect <applet> tags. The applet loads perfectly if I open the HTML file in a Browser.
I've tried reinstalling the JDK. No alteration.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

When I launch that HTML with AppletViewer on Ubuntu, I get..
andrew@pc1:~$ appletviewer appletviewertest.html
Warning: <applet> tag requires width attribute.
andrew@pc1:~$ No AppletViewer or applet appears.
When I take it on over to the [W3C HTML Validator|http://validator.w3.org/], it is more specific, listing (amongst the errors)
#  Line 10, Column 29: required attribute "WIDTH" not specified
<applet code="reading.class"></applet>
The attribute given above is required for an element that you've used, but you have omitted it. For instance, in most HTML and XHTML document types the "type" attribute is required on the "script" element and the "alt" attribute is required for the "img" element.
Typical values for type are type="text/css" for <style> and type="text/javascript" for <script>.
# Error Line 10, Column 29: required attribute "HEIGHT" not specified
...That your 'browser' had no difficulties with the HTML is no surprise if you happened to be using IE (which is not so much a web browser, as an OS component). More than 50% of the code of IE, at one stage, was there purely for guessing what the HTML tag soup that people call HTML (much of which was generated by MS tools) was intended to mean.
Testing web pages or applets in that OS component is largely ineffective. One should not rely on the behaviour of IE as being any guarantee of correctness.
I think the best strategy for testing Applets is to use AppletViewer or Appleteer for the basic testing during development. And once the Applet seems to work OK in those, test on at least 2 major browsers (e.g. IE/FF) and throw in one or two others (Opera, Chrome..).
2 final notes about the applet element you showed.
1) The ".class" addition to the 'code' attribute is unnecessary.
2) Java naming conventions would have the class name as 'Reading', not 'reading'.

  • Appletviewer Please Help

    I feel bad about asking help. But I don't know where else to turn to. I searched the archives to no avail. I'm not sure this is a CLASSPATH problem or what but every time I run appletviewer I get "I/O exception while reading: E:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin\e:\java\ticker.class (The system cannot find the path specified)" Now obviously that is not a valid path. It looks like it's concated two different paths together and I don't exactly know WHAT path it is reading in the first place. Is this the CLASSPATH path? Or simply the PATH path? I don't understand. I don't know how to get Ms-Dos to display the current setting for CLASSPATH. I know how to set CLASSPATH= which I've tried many times setting the path to the correct directory or setting it to null with "set CLASSPATH=" Anyone help? I'd love to start to get to work on my java studies and I won't be able to until I can get this to work. Funny thing, it WAS working only a week ago before it started doing this and I don't have a clue why. When I run appletviewer from the ms-dos prompt, it seems to work for a moment, but then just returns to the prompt. No error. I get the error when I run appletviewer from windows run. (had to break it right before it closed the window to see the error it was displaying)

    Hi,
    Gather patience, don't worry, say by step:
    what your Operation System (Win9x, WinNT, ??);?
    what in your PATH, CLASSPATH;?
    where put it "E:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin\e:\java\ticker.class"?
    how and where you run your applet?
    what is that "E:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin\e:\java\ticker.class"?
    If it a PATH, put between pathes " ; " and take out ticker.class:
    PATH E:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin\; e:\java\and run
    appletviewer ticker.htmlticker.html must contain:
    <applet code=ticker.class width=200 height=200>
    </applet>
    Good Luck,

  • Frozen applet upon exiting

    Hi all,
    I am new to applet (very very new...).
    I am trying to convert a java program into an java applet and it always froze when closing the appletviewer's window. So I created a very simple dummy program, which only consists of one button, but when I click to close the window, it still forzes. Many thanks!!
    Here comes the simple code.
    public class test extends JApplet{
         public void init()
              this.setSize(new Dimension(200,200));
              this.getContentPane().add(new JButton("test"));
    }

    I've no idea if this has anything to do with it, but setting the size of an applet in the code seems a weird thing to do: the size is defined by the HTML/CSS in which it lives.
    I've never used the applet viewer either - always do my testing in browsers.

  • Createprocess failed for AppletViewer Windows NT error #193

    Hi all,
    I am evaluating jdev 2.0 and I have created a workspace and
    project on one machine which has a wizard generated master-
    detail applet. I can log on to the DB and browse records
    successfully in run mode.
    When I copy this directory and all associated files to a second
    machine and attempt to run it, I get the following error:
    createprocess failed for AppletViewer Windows NT error #193
    I then created a new workspace/project as above and I still get
    this error message.
    HELP! TIA Paul Valdetaro

    This is not the problem - I am the administrator on both
    machines. I have tried the suggested solution in any event, and
    there is no change. I have tried reinstalling your product and
    this produces the same result. The weird thing thing is that
    the infobus data wizard works fine in design mode but the applet
    bombs in run mode.

  • Starting size of my appletviewer window

    I want to create an applet of a certain size using Eclipse. I then want to run it using Eclipses appletviewer. My problem is that the appletviewer opens in a window smaller than the content i want to view. Although I can resize the appletviewer-window manually, I'd like to have it in a proper size from the beginning. Do you know how to set the window size at developing time?
    thanks

    At which place of my applet do i have to call the setSize() method? And what setSize() method? Applet.setSize() ?
    edit: Placed it in the init() method. Workd. Thanks

  • Forms 6.0 Server and Appletviewer

    Help!!! I've been trying for days to get the forms 6.0 server to work with my forms through the appletviewer.When I try to run the form through the applet viewer using static.htm the developer splash screen comes up a java window opens then nothing happens.
    I can however run the form through developer forms designer in the appletviewer when I do run as a web form.

    Does your static.htm page have the username, password, and hostname in the SERVERARGS parameter? If not, try adding it and see what happens.

    I performed some testing on your program, and get an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException on one of the buttons. So, I guess there have to be some implementation logic error.
    Since I have no idea what your program is trying to achieve, here's what you can do:
    1. Try to shorten your program.
    2. Add your code piece by piece.
    3. Perform some logic testing.
    4. Repeat steps 2 & 3.

  • ActionPerformed method not working when applet is loaded in browser window.

    Hey there guys. I need urgent help from anybody who has experience in deploying websites whose code is in java.
    I am having two problems as mentioned below...
    first, I have made a simple login screen using java swing and JApplet. there is a single button to login. the action performed for this button accesses a private method to check the username and password which are there in atext file. the applet is working perfectly in appletviewer but when i load the applet in a Internet Explorer window using HTML's Applet tag, the button is giving no response at all even when i enter the correct username and password.
    I guess it is either not calling the private function that is checking the username and password from the tes=xt file or it can not access the file. Please help as soon as possible as this is related to my college project.
    I am attaching the code herewith. Suggestions to improve the coding are also welcome.
    the second problem is that while writing my second program for generating a form which registers a user the html is not at all loading the applet into the browser and also if im trying to access a file to write all the details into the console is showing numerous amount of error after i press the button which i can't not understand. the only thing i can understand is that it is related to file access permissions. If anybody could put some light on the working of worker threads and thread safe activities of SwingUtilities.invokeandWait method it would be really appreciable.

    RockAsh wrote:
    Hey Andrew, first of all sorry for that shout, it was un-intentional as i am new to posting topics on forums and didn't new that this kind of writing is meant as shouting. Cool.
    Secondly thank you for taking interest in my concern.No worries.
    Thirdly, as i mentioned before, I am reading i file for checking of username and password. the file is named as "userpass.txt" and is saved in the directory named "@data" which is kept in the same directory in which my class file resides.OK - server-side. That makes some sense, and makes things easier. The problem with your current code is that the applet will be looking for that directory on the end user's local file system. Of course the file does not exist there, so the applet will fail unless the the end user is using the same machine as the server is coming from.
    To get access to a resource on the server - the place the applet lives - requires an URL. In applets, URLs are relatively easy to form. It might be something along the lines of
    URL urlToPswrd = new URL(getCodeBase(), "@data/userpass.txt");
    InputStream is = urlToPswrd.openStream();
    DataInputStream din = new DataInputStream(is);
    So the problem is that it is reading the file and showing the specific output dialog box when i run it through appletviewer.. Huhh. What version of the SDK are you using? More recent applet viewers should report security exceptions if the File exists.
    ..but the same is not happening when i launch the applet in my browser window using the code as written belowHave you discovered how to open the Java Console in the browser yet? It is important.
    Also the answer to your second question
    Also, the entire approach to storing/restoring the password is potentially wrong. For instance, where is it supposed to be stored, on the server, or on the client?is that, as of now it is just my college project so all the data files and the username and password wiles will be stored on my laptop only i.e. on the client only. no server involved.OK, but understand that an applet ultimately does not make much sense unless deployed through a server. And the entire server/client distinction becomes very important, since that code would be searching for a non-existent file on the computer of the end user.

    Hello,
    Whenever I try to visit websites that have a java applet I get a dialogue with the following error:
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: loader.class.
    I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling java, and also adding the -xmx and -xms parameters for java applet runtime setting in control panel with various values from 128m to 1g.
    The applet at http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1 does work and reports "CONGRATULATIONS, you have the Latest version of Java!", "Java Runtime Version 1.6.0."
    I have been experiencing this problem ever since I installed Windows Vista Home Premium a day or two ago. Any help is appreciated.
    Regards

  • Appletviewer Problem. Please help!

    I had JRE 6 update 5. I wanted to try out appletviewer, so downloaded JDK. But this was version 1.4.2_17. Appletviewer did not work, saying registry value is 1.6 whereas it should be 1.4, & it cannot find java.dll & Java 2 runtime environment. So I uninstalled everything, & reinstalled JDK 1.4.2_17. APPLETVIEWER WORKED. But when I went to Java website to check latest version, it said you don't have latest version. So I fished for latest version of JDK, found, downloaded & installed jdk-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe, after uninstalling 1.4.2_17. Now again appletviewer has stopped working & gives the same error message about registry (1.6 instead of 1.4), java.dll not found & Java 2 RE not found. Tried adding Java bin path in system environment variable. Did not work. Please help. Is this a bug in JDK 6 update 5?

    Coming somewhat closer to the solution
    You understand that JDK and JRE both are differently installed.
    Not to panic.You can install JRE of 1.4 and then set your class path to that jre 1.4.
    Hope you got the point where you're missing.
    good luck.

  • Java Applet Window Warning - Appearing through

    Hello
    The warning that is displayed on applet windows now when using java is causing a problem.
    When you bring a fresh web page or word document over the top of the applet window, the java applet warning is still visible as if it has been brought to the front layer. but the rest of the applet is behind the new active window.
    Really weird.
    Ben.

    Our team is also using a signed applet and are having trouble with popup items not being accessible outside of the JFrame.
    In appletviewer the popup (JXDatePicker) is fully accessible. If running in Internet Explorer on Windows 2000 the portion of the popup outside of the JFrame paints correctly but cannot receive click events correctly.
    It would be preferrable that if the popup cannot receive events outside of the applet frame that the popup would be smart enough to pop itself fully in the applet frame.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.
