AppleWorks Went Bye

Just upgraded to Mavericks, apparently it doesn't support Power PC apps so I can't open/use any of my existing AppleWorks docs?  iPages won't open AppleWorks docs either, is there an Appleworks upgrade/version that works with Mavericks?

PPC apps haven't been supported since LIon came out.

  • Reinstalled OSX and Appleworks went bye bye?

What gives? I decided to do a fresh install of my ibook and everything is there EXCEPT my Appleworks program that was there the day I bought it. A little help ont his would be great thanks.

I just reinstall my OSX also and I have my software Install/restore that came with my iMac.
After going through all the first layers of screens, I choose my hard drive and it says software restore in installing (or something like that I forget).
Then another screen comes on saying to "insert the CD that looks like this" except what its showing is a picture is of the CD that's already running.
There is only a quit button, nothing else.
How am I supposed to install the software if I can't get beyond this screen?
I just had to reinstall OSX 10.4, I'm using the software install disk that came with my iMac - which came with 10.2 installed.

  • Synced my Blackberry and my emails went bye bye

I was syncing some numbers on my new peal when it locked up ( pocket berry) I quit the app and noticed some "temp mail" was trying to come up on my email. I deleted that account and noticed that my other email accounts went away with it. Well that is where my problem is. I lost 3000 emails. Any way to recover them? I already added the accounts back to my apple mail program? Also do I have a way of backing up my future emails to avoid any fututre problems?
    Thanks in Advance
    Ryan

I don’t fully understand what you say, but if your mail has been deleted and it’s no longer on the server and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.
As to how to back up your mail, Mail stores most preferences and all account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (except the passwords, which are stored in the keychain). Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored in ~/Library/Mail/.
Similarly, Address Book (whose data you should back up as well) stores the settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and the data in ~/Library/Application Support/AddresBook/.
You can back up these just like you would back up any other data files. The affected applications shouldn’t be running while making the backup. Actually, while you’re at it, you might as well back up your entire home folder...
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • FTP access went bye-bye

On our new server, we have had a crash or two. After the latest crash, the FTP server stopped accepting regular FTP connections. I can access via HTTP and SFTP, but I get an authorization error (530) when I try to log in to upload pages. I went into my Server Admin program and found that most of my services register my most recent startup, however, the FTP start time is the shipping date of the machine. I have tried all the quick fixes, restarts, etc. and am close to wanting to reinstall the FTP service -- but the server won't let me because we have already updated to 10.4.8. I could sure use some help here as I can not find any discussions or postings from Apple that would help.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the assistance. I also found out that this
problem is recurring due to my CrushFTP. Whenever I
use the 'Install CrushFTP OS X Integration' this
problem with FTP Access occurrs as it should because
CrushFTP can't run if FTP Access is not enabled. I
know dumb on my part for not realising this sooner,
    but thanks very much.
My problem was also caused by CrushFTP; I emailed Ben Spink (the developer) about it, and he answered:
"Don't use the osx integration piece. Something changed in the config file of osx and it will no longer work. (...) I may need to send you a fixed file if the integration piece corrupted the osx ftp config. Let me know if everything works correctly when not using daemon and ftp sharing. (you want the ftp sharing system pref off)"
So I guess you shouldn't turn OS X integration on..

  • Looks like the double data promo went bye bye

If you didn't hop on it, it's gone. The old 12,14,16,18 GB plans are gone too. So it's 15 GB for $100 or $150 for 20 GB and back to the extremely overpriced 30 GB-100 GB plans. Also stating the 10 GB and 15 GB are temporary too. You'd think Verizon would learn. One day T-Mobile and Sprint will actually have competitive networks what's Verizon going to then when they're offering unlimited data or at least much higher data caps for the same money? In a few years there will be virtually no difference in the networks. I guess they'll worry about that then.

T-Mobile says it reaches 250 million as of their 3rd quarter report. That's 80%
T-Mobile LTE Now Reaches 250 Million Americans - Months Ahead of Schedule | T-Mobile Newsroom
We’re now on track to cover 280 million people with 4G LTE by mid-2015, and, I’m telling you today, we expect to hit the 300 million mark by the end of 2015.
If they can hit that 300 million they basically have matched Verizon in coverage,.

  • Triple Touch Zoom went Bye Bye

Hi friends. I was using the triple touch zoom feature in a drawing app for detail work, and it was fantastic. Suddenly, when I triple touch now, the zoom is barely noticeable! I didn't adjust any features. Zoom is still set for the three finger touch in settings. Thoughts? Wha' happened?

  • Safari Bookmarks Went Bye Bye

I was attempting an online transaction with my bank when suddenly I accidently bumped something on my desk; pens and pencils sprayed all over my computer keyboard. After picking up the mess I noticed that half of my Safari Bookmarks (after letter E) disappeared. Those still present were not corrupted but the rest of the alphabet was nowhere to be found. How do I restore them? I have an exterior Lacie hard drive. Time Machine is installed. I'm on operating system 10.7.3 (Lion). I cannot locate ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db, nor have I found Home/Library/Safari, in the Bookmarks.plist file, as others have suggested. I'm stumped. What is the solution?

Quit Safari. Disable bookmark synchronization, if applicable.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar. Copy the following line into the text box that opens, then press return:
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Restore the selected file from your most recent backup.

  • Something went wrong....

Sorry about this being extremely long.
Recently my iBook broke down so i sent it to get repaired turned out something was wrong with the hard drive so all my stuff went bye bye. I thought i had backupped everything but i realzed about 600 songs were not so i didnt want to lose them so i put my ipod into manual mode so i can keep them, but one day while adding a podcast something happened and iTunes crashed. After that wen i plugged back in my iPod it was no longer recognized by iTunes unless i erased everything and started over so after a week i decided to say goodbye to the songs and redo everything. I hooked up my hard drive and addded the songs to my ipod it was sort of a lot of songs, about 5300. So i let it update then watched a movie to let the time go, when i came back it still wasnt done so i started watching it to see how fast it was going, i quicly realized it was stuck at a certain song meaning at song about 4700 it just stopped syncing. I found the song in iTunes and played it to see if it worked, it did but i thought its just one song so i deleted it to move things along, nothing changed I guess iTunes didn't realized i delted it cuz it was still trying to add it, so i clicked the eject button so i could unplug it and plug it back to finish the syncing. When i did this itunes froze and after about 5 minutes i restarted my ipod by holding down menu and play, because itunes would not quit no matter how many times i hit the force quit button, but as soon as i unplugged the ipod it quit automaticly. So i grabbed my ipod and noticed NONE of the songs were there yet the space had still been taken up so I got very mad then plugged it back in and watched it update for half an hour then once again on a different song it froze. i got very mad, so mad i slammed my fist on my laptop and my ipod. I guess i was very mad because i cut myself and bled from the click wheel. Then I did it a third time, this time being very careful. Every 1000 songs i ejected it and checked if the songs were working then i plugged it back in, i did this 4 times then i stopped for the night because from the first time i plugged it in till that point had taken about 5 hours. So i played a few songs on it to make sure everything was fine, and it was fine indeed so i thought i wud update it later. A few days later i got some new music so i added them and every now and then i would add little by little. However now it doesnt work, it is doing what it used to do. When i try to add new music it maybe adds 4 or 5 then stops adding them and if i try to quit iTunes it freezes and wont quit until i unplug the ipod, when i unplug the ipod i get the warning thing, but all the songs work fine EXCEPT the songs i was trying to add. I thought maybe I should just wait so i updated it today and after waiting about 30 minutes for a song to update i was fed up. I do notice that the hard drive makes noises every once in a while, I know hard drive make noise because they spin and bla bla bla BUT what i hear is like a "da da da da da da" like it keeps tryin to write something but cant. I kind of think when i slammed my fist on it i might have messed something up internally that is why it always stops updating past a certain point. What do you think? The worst part is the warrenty juss expired a few weeks ago, so if I am right and the hard drive is the problem how much do you think it costs to fix it?

I have the same problem as yours with my 3rd Gen iPod, which hardly pass thru the 100 songs mark. Seems there are some recovered bad sectors on the Hard drive of the iPod. see doing the following helps
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

  • Need help getting Appleworks

I accidentally erased safari and I theirfore couldn't have any internet. At that time I had Appleworks. Not thinking straight I erased everything on the computer and the Appleworks went with it. I didn't know how I got appleworks at first and now I dont know how to have it on my computer. I really need it and would appreciate the help. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Erasing the hard drive does just that, wipes it clean. Without knowing what model Mac you have, it's hard to tell you how to get AppleWorks back.
If you have a pre-Intel "consumer" Mac (iMac, iBook, eMac or Mac mini), AppleWorks was pre-installed on it & can be reinstalled from the disks that came with the Mac. AppleWorks is not installed by default when you restore the software from the install DVD on the newer Macs. Apple has written two articles, Knowledge Base article 300316 on installing AppleWorks 6 & Knowledge Base article 61802 on restoring the software than came with your Mac.
If you have a PowerBook or Mac tower, you should have a retail install CD since AppleWorks wasn't included.

  • "An error occurred while trying to save your photo library..."

    Installed iPhoto6.
Started app. It said it would take a few seconds or minutes to upgrade.
About 6 hours later after churning on thumbnails it is now claiming this error over and over with some time that goes by in between:
"An error occurred while trying to save your photo library."
"Some recent changes may be lost. Make sure your hard disk has enough space and that iPhoto is able to access the iPhoto Library folder."
It says I have 22,759 photos in Library. The Library was a subset of my images, named "iPhoto Library 2005" and it was intentionally kept below the 25,000 limit of iPhoto5.
Since Steve claims iPhoto6 can easily handle 250,000 photos, I clicked on the upgrade button with confidence. This now appears to be a mistake. Last night I was working on an iDVD for the local school and the majority of that work has simply vanished. There were 320 photos. I spent hours adding keywords, ranking, adjusting temperature, focus, exposure, etc.
Of the 320, only 16 photos survived. They are 16 in a row from the middle of the roll near the end but not at the end. The roll name was lost. The name is now just "Roll 226" and none of the photos have keywords. I know at least one of the 16 should have the keyword "DUPE" and the ranking 2 STARS since it precedes a double that I ranked 2 during a slideshow, sorted by ranking, and dragged to the DUPE keyword. All 16 should have the ACROCK keyword which I initially assigned to all photos.
Again, 304 of 320 have vanished and the 16 that remain have no keywords or rankings.
I watched the slide show in iPhoto5 three times with different music candidates so I know the keywording and rankings evaporated in iPhoto6. I also clicked ACROCK and option clicked DUPE and POOR so that all of the music program photos except dupes and poor images would vanish. I only deleted one photo so there were not a lot of changes to the library in terms of photos in it. I cannot think of any reason why the 16 chosen survived. Only two were placed in a DVD dropzone and they are scattered amongst the 16 survivors.
Also, the ACROCK and DUPE keywords are also gone while the POOR keyword added in August is in the keyword table just fine.
I exported these 320 photos last night to iDVD and tried almost all of the different themes and I dragged about 10 different photos to the dropzones, hit play, hit motion, etc.
It seems very strange that 16 photos from the middle of the pack would survive.
It seems extra odd that iPhoto5 and iDVD treated these as "established" photos, not photos hanging in the wings somewhere ready to vanish in an upgrade.
I gracefully saved and quit iDVD and iPhoto5 and there were no crashes and nothing strange happened while making the DVD. I was hoping today to try out the new themes and maybe find one that is just right for the kids. Instead, about 300 of 320 photos of the kids went bye-bye along with all the work on the photos!
I'm nervous that many more photos are missing but I will need to do a ton of checking to see what else has been deleted by the upgrade.
The user message that iPhoto6 presents is nearly useless and strange. It offers little if anything to go on in terms of a repair procedure. After saying an error has occurred, it says some recent changes could be lost but doesn't expand at all on what they may be or why.
From my experience, recently added photos, keywords, keyword assignments, rankings and maybe more can all be lost. To compound matters, before the upgrade it says that you cannot go back to the prior (working!) library in iPhoto5. Beware!
It finishes by suggesting two vague steps to take. The first is to make sure your disk has "enough" space. How much is "enough"? It doesn't say something like X GB available, Y GB needed. A user would have no clue about how much space to free up. I have over 17 GB and assumed that would be enough. I sure hope it doesn't require double the space of the existing library. I would hope it has a smarter algorithm than that since 23,000 photos at about 3 MB each maps to about 70 GB. That's a lot of "temporary" space to require to perform an upgrade. Since the upgrade/error message provide no details (unlike package installers which supposedly tell you how much space you need), users like me would have no clue if 70 GB is plenty or not enough.
I found 24 GB secretly used by iPhoto 5 for an iPod Photo Cache and a tech bulletin saying this just grows and grows without control and it can be deleted SO I wouldn't put huge hidden disk usage past iPhoto6.
The last none-to-helpful suggestion is that a user make sure that iPhoto is able to access the iPhoto Library folder. Huh?!??!?
Wouldn't this be a great thing to confirm via software before setting about on 6+ hours of work, especially if there is an error message hard-coded in the software confirming that Apple knows the result may be losing valuable customer photos and hours of work on enhancing, keywording, creating DVDs, etc.?
Of course. This appears negligent. To know that customer file loss will likely result but not checking these things out in advance before taking that risk seems like putting the cart before the horse at customers' expense & pain and certain loss of irreplaceable family photos (for the, say, 80%+ of iPhoto users that "plan" to get a backup routine established?).
I got burned in the iPhoto5 upgrade as well, losing photos, so I was sure to have a backup so it wouldn't happen again. Most I fear won't be so fortunate so be advised of the risk and work with copies of your photos only.
Also, why would iPhoto5 have all the permissions it needs to store, edit, tag and otherwise work with 320 photos added last night? Why would version 5 have plenty of permissions to use the folders and the photos in them. Why would iPhoto 6 suddenly lose those permissions or not have enough? This hardly makes any sense. The only way the permissions were set, the iPhoto libraries got created and the albums got created was by dragging a folder of images onto the albums pane in iPhoto5. So, iPhoto5 set all the permissions, everything is under one user account and there should be no surprise permissions for iPhoto6 to deal with.
It seems unbelievable that iPhoto 6 couldn't do what iPhoto 5 was doing. I never changed permissions and never touched files in the iPhoto 5 structure.
I can only guess that recently added keywords, recently added photos and recently added rankings and keyword taggings linger in some at-risk staging area that a version 6 upgrade doesn't know how to deal with. This seems like a lame way to code this app so I don't consider this a good guess but what else could it be?
Anyone else have a better hunch at a root cause?
Anyone else have an idea of a cure?
    Anyone else run into this?
It sure doesn't look like there was a test case for having near 25,000 photos (an iPhoto 5 documented requirement), working with the latest roll and then doing a version 6 upgrade because it failed miserably--user data loss--without any special effort to find defects. In a former life I tested software and released software was much more difficult to break than this.
I would appreciate any other user experiences/solutions related to this problem. I am reluctant to import another 22,000 photos from iPhoto Library 2004 only to find more photos go poof without any rhyme or reason.
Thanks in advance for your help and I hope this alerts others to a potential for valuable photo loss (i.e., back up before you upgrade, verify iPhoto Library permissions--whatever that means--and have scads of disk space available assuming there's any truth to the error message!).

    G5 Dual 2.7 GHz 2 GB DDR SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I'll check if I have copies of copies of copies. This could take a while due to the number of files.
I picked up a brand new 300 GB Western Digital hard drive thinking 20GB or so was not enough for temp files for upgrading and/or importing.
I formatted it as a mac os extended, journaled drive, not case sensitive, one full-size partition. I started iPhoto6 with the option key. I had a CF in my other WD 300 GB (with media reader). iPhoto6 asked about the photos on the card. I told it not to download those (again). Because I was holding the option key down, iPhoto6 asked if I wanted to select a different library or create one. I created one on the brand new, 100% empty 300 GB drive. I'm not sure if/where iPhoto6 creates temporary/cache files (like iPhoto iPod Cache folder) as it sets up a new library. I was hoping the empty 300 GB drive would give it ample room to load an existing iPhoto5 library.
When I dragged an old iPhoto5 Library onto the new iPhoto6 Library Album pane. I saw the "Importing..." start and it went on and on and on and... I let it run for HOURS and HOURS. When I checked around midnight, it had crashed. When I started it again, it said it had run across some huge number of stray photos.
I have no idea why iPhoto6 would have trouble importing an iPhoto5 library that was below the 25,000 photo mark for 5. This is especially bizarre since iPhoto6 claims it supports 250,000 photos!
I'll be trying to figure out if these stray photos got imported as dupes, if they lost iPhoto5 keywords, etc. I fear something different but equally bad happened since the number of photos it came up with was like 79,000--again many stray photos that didn't make it into the first import for no known reason. Since libraries in iPhoto5 were around 25,000 or less, I'm not sure what's happening.
Maybe there's a cache or temp file still created on Macintosh HD and not on the empty new 300GB drive and a bug exists for imports when space on Mac HD is "low" (i.e., under 3.5 GB). Maybe it's seeing thumbs as files it should import? Maybe it's seeing Orig and Modified images as worthy of reimporting?
I had told it not to import dupes but who knows if it goes by file name, checksum, byte-for-byte comparison, etc.
I'm not sure if I can even pull up iPhoto5 and 6 at the same time now to scroll through the libraries to see if dupes, thumbs, original/modifies/etc. are showing up to boost the count from under 25K to 79K!
Ideas? At least I know I'm not the only G5 dual user with this problem!

  • ITunes application quits unexpectedly in OS 10.2.8

Computer wizard and sage: It's getting monotonous. Every time I try to play 6.0.5 iTunes on my OS 10.2.8 system (with a G4), iTunes shuts itself off after a few seconds and a message pops up -- "the iTunes application has quit unexpectedly."
Any ideas on how to fix this besides simply boosting buying more RAM or freeing up hard disc space (have deleted a bunch of stuff to make 1 GB available now) and upgrading the operating system?
Other data: I was also getting the same application quit message for Abode Reaer when trying to open PDFs. Attempted a "permissions" repair run in disk utility -- not sure I did it right.
I sure will appreciate your ideas and prescriptions. Thanks for the help.
    Paul in Chicagoland
    G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Problem fixed. No, it was not a space issue. Yes, freeing up space is important.
But here was the glitch. It was a "ad.doubclick.net" file that was stuck in my podcast folder. I finally realized this when I saw this title appear briefly on the song title bar on the top of iTunes before iTunes aburptly went bye-bye. iTunes apparently was defaulting to this file when I did not click any specific tune to play.
I deleted that file and presto! iTunes back in business.
Thanks, folks, for your attention to this matter. Your suggestions while not hitting this specific hangnail on the head are good ones and duly noted by me.

  • 17.0.1 cookie problems that were not in 16.0.2

It used to be in the previous version 16.0.2, that I'm now thinking of
    going back to, that -:
Tools, options, exception was a place that I could list all the cookies
that I never wanted to see. I could find the cookies that I did not want
by opening "cookies" and by hand putting unwanted cookies sources into
    "exceptions" and blocking them.
As a result I would, by default, allow only unblocked cookies for valid
sites to be on my system. I had a list about 200 sites long of unwanted
    blocked cookies sources.
Then in 17.0.1 - bingo my exceptions list went bye bye and I was finding
valid userids appear on pages that I opened where I had not asked
17.0.1 to retain either password or userid.
Then I found (in 17.0.1) that even if I ticked the box to remove the cookies (aquired by the lack of being able to block then) when I closed 17.0.1 that the tick was cancelled by 17.0.1 and the cookies stayed.
What I want to have happen is
    a) have no history
    b) accept cookies
    c) create exceptions and block cookes with that "exception" list and not have that exception list deleted when I close 17.0.1
    d) accept 3rd party cookises and keep them until I close 17.0.1
    e) clear history but NOT the exceptions list that I spent time creating (and I don't know where they were/are stored).
What I see is no way to delete the cookies when I quit 17.0.1 because, if I tick the cookie box in "Settings" 17.0.1 clears the cookie tick when I close 17.0.1
    Thanks

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"
*Tools > Options > Privacy: History: [X] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Clear+Recent+History
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.
There is usually no need to keep third-party cookies unless you visit websites that won't work without this.<br />
Best is to let all cookies expire when you close Firefox and make an allow exception for cookies that you want to keep.<br />
Note that if you reopen tabs automatically on a next start(Show my windows and tabs from last time) that the cookies from those tabs are stored as part of the session data and thus won't be removed.

Yes, you are right. I bought the computer BUT it was one returned, so I believe they have already installed the disks. As I first opened the computer and turned it on, I never had to install anything using the disks. All I did was: turn it on, create an account and BAM, it was working.
As the day went bye, here I am looking for the **** applications and they cannot be found.
I will try inserting the disk and see where it takes me.
