Application stays in process list of task manager for about 20 seconds after application is closed

I have an application that uses Winsock for TCP/IP connections to the server. After connecting the Winsock communications and then closing the application , the application.exe stays in the process list for about 20 seconds before going away.
If I start the application and do not connect then when I close the application it clears from the process list immediately.
Any way to track down what is preventing the process from going away when the application closes down?

I installed and ran the process monitor program and it shows where the delay is but I'm not sure what it is. Below are a few entries copied from the performance monitor log that indicates the delay between 10:10:52 and 10:11:15.

After altering the "Processes" list in Task manager, almost all of my programs show the iTunes icon, and when I click on, for example, Firefox, iTunes will load. Uninstalling iTunes restores the normal loading of other programs, but re-installation of iTunes makes the problem recur. Any answers?

First I'd set up a System Restore point. Then try applying the LNK registry fix from the following document:

Does that get your icons back to normal?

• YouCam Mirage in the list process list of task manager althougn deactivated in Autostart

I was wondering why "YouCam Mirage" is active in the task manager although I disabled both , the YouCam Tray and YouCam Mirage in the AutoStart Tab of the task manager. I did not start up the software manually.

Is this the same Mirage app that I see in the in the "running apps" list but can't find anywhere to actually stop it? I found it via the Security HD that came with my tablet. Couldn't find it anywhere to see what it did and became suspicious of malware or something.
The app icon is square and has some pastel colors and the word "Mirage" in black type. Please let me know if this is the same camera control app. It can be "frozen* via the Security HD app or force stopped in the settings.
The Security HD is pretty amazing at the customization for control of what apps can access data, push notifications, adds, camera, phone info gathering; basically all that nasty stuff that you find in apps that need permissions and you don't know how they're connected. Like why does a font need to know when I make a call and to who.
Anyway back to the Mirage app, please let me know. Thank you.

• FF not running (not listed in Task Manager) but get message it is (and Profile missing)?

WIN7 (86). Can't open FF. Get message it's running, but it isn't (not listed in Task Manager showing all processes). Tried to access my Profile, but search was unsuccessful.

Try to delete the profiles.ini file to force Firefox to create a new default profile.

• Firefox starts hidden (window not visible), but stays in process list. IE9, Opera, Chrome works just fine

Yesterday my Firefox 4 just stopped working. When I click on firefox icon - new process appears in task manager list, but I can't see firefox windows. After killing firefox.exe process I can start another one, but still no firefox windows are shown.
Tried to re-install (with deleted profiles and whole installation from Program Files folder). Tried 3.x and 4.x versions, no luck. This is no window focus problem (or it's position outside the desktop) - firefox.exe process starts, but no GUI objects are created (checked with sysinternals procexplorer)
Computer is well anti-malware and virus protected. Reinstalled newest NVIDIA drivers (WHQL), all updates from Windows Update. I've been reading that there was some prob. with NVIDIA drivers (9800GT), but this just happened suddenly - without new updates or installed programs - just during the day...

I'm having this same problem and here is how I got to this place. First, it doesn't happen every time. About 50% of boots will Firefox not work. (The process starts, but no window opens.) I have an SSD that is smallish... 64 GB running Windows 7. It is a machine I built myself. I have about 11 Gig free at any given time. I have a 2 Tb secondary drive where I keep my data and some, less used, programs. This is also where I keep my virtual machines (VM). I currently have 2 linux machines. Last night, I tried creating a Windows 7 (W7) virtual machine with an extra copy of W7 that I have. Well, I forgot to switch the target VM install area from my system disk to the secondary disk. When I realized what I had done, the install was almost finished and I had about 1 GB left. I worked to kill everything and delete the W7 VM. (That was a time consuming pain. PC was as slow as mud, which was to be expected, I guess.) So, after I got the W7 VM deleted everything seemed to be alright, until I tried to start Firefox and it wouldn't. Thunderbird 3 also won't start. As well as Norton Antivirus. I haven't tested any other programs; however, IE will start. As will Photoshop, Wiper.exe, CCleaner and Windows Media Player. I have my machine locked down; so, I'm confident it isn't a virus or malware. (I ran a full scan yesterday and this morning - when I got Norton to start.)
I'm not thinking this is directly a Firefox issue; however, any help would be appreciated. Heh, I don't have the time or the will to rebuild the software on this machine. I do have a backup, but I've never had much luck getting those to work properly.
Thanks for any help.

• TB hangs and I cant kill it with process explorer or task manager. Have to reboot. Problem is intermittent.

TBird V31.2.0: Windows 7 home premium with service pack 1: hp pavilion dv7 laptop.
Intermittently, TB hangs and I can't kill it with normal close, or process explorer, or task manager. I have to reboot to get a clean copy of TBird to view my mail.
Problem is chronic (about a 2 to 4 months). I updated TB several weeks ago but no joy.
The green bar (lower right) that indicates download progress is at max extent and stays their when the problem exists.
Error msg. appearing with attempt to kill TB says roughly - the instance of TB in not functioning. Kill it or reboot. Its a real pain to reboot. If someone could give me a clue to at least kill the hung instance of TB that would be a great help. I've been using TB for years on at least two computers and never ran into this before.
Thanking you in advance for any help offered.

Which operating system are you using?
Resetting the photoshop preferences might cure the problem.
Press and hold down the Shift+Ctrl+Alt keys down just after starting the launch of photoshop 7
(Shift-Command-Option on a mac)
Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the adobe photoshop settings file
Press Yes

• Firefox won't start properly. The process begins in task manager, but the program doesn't start.I have restarted the computor, and updated my plug-ins. Don't know what to do next. It will open in safe mode, but not regularly.

When we click on the icon to start firefox even though the process opens in task manager, the program screen doesn't open

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• Installed Adobe dlm add-on and now Firfox will not open. I see the process starting in Task Manager but no window opens. Unistalled Firefox then re-installed but still no luck. HELP ME!

I installed Adobe dlm add-on and now Firefox will not open. I see the process starting in Task Manager but no window opens. Unistalled Firefox then re-installed but still no luck. HELP ME! I do not want to use IE! I presume it has something to do with Adobe DLM as ever since then it is not working.

I had this problem for a couple weeks as well and it was extremely frustrating considering we use firefox for all our company tasks. Here is the solution:
First of all if you have no bookmarks you want to save, then go directly to step 7. If you want to save your bookmarks first, then follow these steps.
1. Shut down the computer
2. Reboot and open firefox
3. Go to Task Manager, right click firefox.exe, and click END PROCESS TREE
4. WAIT 30 SECONDS! Then Double-click the shortcut to try and open firefox again
5.Repeat steps 3 and 4 until firefox finally opens (trust me, eventually it will)
6. Once it finally opens, backup your bookmarks,
7. Download a copy of firefox from there website
8. Uninstall from programs menu and make sure to check the box REMOVE ALL COMPONENTS
9. install the new copy and BOOM! it works
If it doesn't work, you're an idiot. If you don't want to reinstall firefox, then you're out of luck. Good Luck!

• As soon as Firefox opens, it starts increasing memory usage until it maxes out, and it won't actually close unless I end the process in the task manager.

Even if I'm not doing anything, no matter how few tabs I have open, Firefox will slowly increase in memory (RAM) usage until it's using nearly 100% of my computer's RAM, and everything basically freezes. Even when I close the window, the process continues to run, and I have to end the process in the task manager in order to get it to stop using RAM. I've tried disabling all my add-ons, and that does not help.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

• Task Manager for HTC One

What is the best task manager for the HTC one?

I assume you mean you went from a 3G phone to a 4G phone. The G in those phone types has nothing to do with GB, but "generation" of cellular connection. You do not necessarily use 1GB more in data/month when you switch from a 3G phone to a 4G phone.
If there are apps opening up and using data, then you need to change the settings in those apps to only use data when you would like. If there are apps which you don't want/need, then you can just disable them in the app manager of your settings menu or delete them altogether if they are not pre-loaded bloatware.

• I am trying to launch Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 7 but the application window isnt visible even though there is a firefox.exe process running in task manager.

I am trying to launch Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 7 but it isnt working. I try to launch it and the application window does not show. When I look at the task manager and then look at the Applications tab, Firefox isnt listed. If I go to the Processes tab, there is a firefox.exe*32 process listed. Each time I double click the Firefox icon, a new firefox.exe process is spawned but there is never a visible instance of the Firefox application.
There are no errors in the application logs. I end up just having to kill the processes.
I tried launching in safe mode by holding down the shift button but the same thing happens.
Any suggestions on what to try? It has never worked since upgrading from version 8. I tried un-installing and re-installing

I went through everything mentioned in the link you posed and nothing detailed there resolved the problem.
The Profile folder didnt exist so I created it. Made sure the perms were good and that it was not read only.
There are no default folders appearing under the profile folder when I start Firefox.
I have Firefox installed to my E drive.
Nothing happens. The process appears in the task manager but no application shows up.
Cant start it in safe mode, cant run the profile manager.

• Safari stays in "Processes" list

Sometimes when I quit Safari (either via the File menu or by clicking the "X" button, the application closes (gone in Task Manager) but stays as an active process in Task Manager. When this happens, I cannot launch Safari until I end the process manually via T.M.
Any ideas why this may be happening?
PS: Using 3.1.1 on Windows XP Pro SP 2

I can't replicate this. After "X"ing out Safari, it disappeared from my Processes listing.
What is your home page? Try setting it to google.com, and close safari. It should work OK.
If it's not exiting the program, it may be doing some Javascript calculations and it's busy.
So, this is due either to the websites you are visiting or your PC. Let us know how testing goes.
