Application switcher not working as expected

I am using the French localisation of Leopard. Using Application switcher (ie Cmd-Tab) I was able on Tiger to quit a running app by pressing A (an oddity due to the AZERTY / QWERTY differences). This does not work any more and I cannot quit an application from Application switcher. Any advice?

Cool. Learn a new trick every day... It works on my English keyboard (with the Q).
Maybe the "oddity" has been fixed and it is no longer A on the French keyboard, but Q, as it should be.

Selecting a program opens desired program properly(as displayed in Menu Bar) but will not open the corresponding program's open windows until selecting program in a Mission Control desktop. After selecting the desktop to which the program is attached and clicking on the program then the open windows will be properly displayed.
Application Switcher seems to work correctly and open the corresponding windows within a desktop if programs are attached to a particular desktop but will not open the corresponding open windows if the programs are located on different desktops - i.e. Mail Windows will not open if Safari windows are displayed because programs are on two different desktops.

  • Application.addEventListener not working as expected

I wanted to add a global KEY_DOWN event listener and
MOUSE_CLICK event listener to my app. The help files say to use the
application.addEventListener(type, handler) to do this. I added the
listeners in my creationComplete function but they do not work for
windows I popup. I know these windows are in the application scope
because I am setting application level model attributes in them
that the main window uses. Why are these events not registering
from popup windows if this is global?

But I can also use application:openFile: that works too.
No, you can't. The Apple Event "open files" will open one or more files. That is why the documentation says to use "application:openFiles:".
And it is present as well in the application delegate protocol reference nearby application:openFiles: and application:openTempFile: all in the "Opening Files" tasks group.
Why is one called in addition and not the other ? Is application:openTempFile: usage left to the reader guess?
They are delegate messages. Their only reason for existence is for the programmer to use as he or she sees fit. In one specific example, the Apple event "open files", one of these delegate methods is the recommended way to handle the "open files" Apple Event.
I did not found other answer in the Xcode documentation than the "How Cocoa Applications Handle Apple Events" paragraph of the Cocoa Scripting Guide OS (which is back to 10.4 as you noticed it) that advise to use application:openFiles: which brings me back to the other methods for opening files, some working, some not..
I'm not used to such a fluzziness in the documentation.
You are not used to the delegate pattern. This API has been in existence for 25 years across several, radically different, architectures. There is a lot of legacy there. If the documentation says to use method A and you discove that method B works too, you should switch to method A. There is no guarantee that method B will continue to work in the future. You have already discovered this as you keep trying to use techniques from 1991. Please, just use the recommended method. You have nothing to gain by trying other methods that have similar-sounding names and are described nearby to other methods in the documentation.

  • Application:openTempFile: not working as expected.

Maybe I understand wrongly but I read in the documentation about how a Cocoa app (not document based) opens files form another application (Finder or another one in my case), that it searches for the following methods in the application delegate and in this order :
The application delegate is sent this message, if it responds to it:application:openFiles:
If the delegate does not respond to that message, the handler checks, in the order listed, whether the application delegate responds to one of the following messages, and if so, sends it:
    openTempFile:
    openFiles:
    openFile:
What I understand about it is that if you don't implement openFiles: it will look for openTempFile: first, then openFiles: (again ?) then openFile:
It's not clear why it would come back for openFiles: a second time if it tried and failed in the first attempt and then tried and failed with openTempFile:
Anyway if I implement openFile: or openFiles: it works : my app is sollicited and the methods are called if present and in the order openFiles: if both are there, openFile: if it is alone.
But it never tries to use openTempFile: even when it is the sole one. Instead I have an Error dialogue
The document “temp005.pdf” could not be opened. MyApp cannot open files in the “Portable Document Format (PDF)” format.
Message that I don't get when MyApp has the openFiles: or openFile: method present in MyAppDelegate.
Could you help me to clarify this ?

  • Application Switching not working in Spaces

I'm having some trouble with Spaces and Application switching. Randomly the feature that switches the space to the right Application when you click on the dock stops working. The menu bar will change to the right application but the window and space will stay the same. Clicking the Window menu and selecting the window you want to go to doesn't work either. This problem also persists if you are in another Application like Safari and another application is behind it. You click the application in the dock and the menu bar changes, but Safari (or whatever program you were in before) stays in the front. The only way to switch is to manually click the spaces button on the dock and select the window you want which can get really annoying. A computer restart fixes the problem but I don't like having to restart my computer every other day or so.

Well, my mouse issue turned out to be a Logitech Control Center/ Leopard issue. It was resolved with an update from Logitech but Spaces is still buggin' hard. When I try to switch spaces using Spaces this is what happens:
I'm in Mail (space 3) and I wish to switch to Safari (space 1)
I open spaces, click on space one and things become slow-motion the menu bar switches to Safari but the window switches to iTunes (space 2)
This stops with a restart but eventually it starts happening again. I switch fine if I click the application icon in the dock but not if I use Spaces.
Irrelevant of this bug but another recent freakout occurred when iTunes stopped dragging and dropping so I restarted. I was greeted with a hang on the grey screen with the black wheel for several hours. I eventually got it to power down again. I then pulled the power cord from the back, reconnected it and it restarted. All was fine until the return of the SpaceBug a few minutes ago.

  • Keyboard shortcuts to Dashboard, Application Switch not working

I think other people are having a related version of this problem! After a certain period of time after starting or restarting the computer (perhaps whenafter the computer goes to sleep?) the keyboard shortcuts for Tiger, F9, F10, F11, and F12 don't work, and neither does Cmd + Tab to switch between applications. What is going on?

I've not a solution, but for what it's worth I have a TiPB, a MacBook Pro, and two Quicksilvers running Tiger and have not experienced your problem. Not to suggest the problem doesn't exist, but perhaps it's related to something specific with your computer. You might try booting into safe mode to see if the problem ceases. If it does, then it's related to something safe mode disables. Another thing you can try is to create a new test user, then log out of your normal account and log into the test account. If the problem disappears, then it may be related to a bad preference file or something running in you normal account that isn't in the test account. It could also be a problem related to a corrupted cache file. Use one of the several utilities around for cleaning cache files.
If none of the above are successful, consider doing an Archive and Install to reinstall a fresh copy of Tiger.

  • Application switching not working properly

Today something strange started happening. When I try to switch to an open application, using Command-TAB or even clicking on the icon in the dock, instead of the application coming to the front, only the menu bar for that application comes to the front. When I click a second time on the dock icon, the switch completes, and the window comes to the front. But when using Command-TAB it's just left there. I can bring the window to the front, e.g. by doing a keyboard command (e.g. Command-L in Chrome to get into the address bar) but I can't just switch with one move from one window to another. This has changed today, up until now it's been fine. It changed around the same time I had a weird file corruption issue in MS Word; I wonder whether they are related? Whether perhaps it's to do with disk corruption. Anyway if you've had a similar problem let me know, I'd be interested to hear any suggestions for how to fix it (e.g. is there a way to flush preference files, and reset? I'll see whether it happens in a new user account).
    Cheers
    Seth

Heya Seth- I just got this wrapped up with a senior specialist; here's what we did.
Oh, little background - this happened to me too seemingly out of the blue BUT coinciding with some corruption that an Erase & Install hopefully took care of.... it was after the E & I that this began to happen.
    Shut Down
Holding shift key & Power On
must hold the Shift key until a progress bar appears (can release the Power button immediately)
    Time will pass
Images will show up much slower (this slows down the Quartz filters...?)
Open up apps.  Now try switching.....
it will be slow but keep your eye on the Menu bar.
    Working (mine did)
    It's a log-in item then.
Restart - this will be sloooooooow.
Back up, Sys Pref - Users & Accounts - log-in items... I took out Growlhelper.
    Worked like a charm.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers,

  • Limit switches not working as expected

I'm currently testing my Servo system using MAX. Using the 1D-axis I'm commanding the motor to go through a limit switch. When the limit switch is detected (status goes red) the controller ignores this and carries on to complete the move. Once the command is completed the controller will not allow another move further into the limit but will allow a move out of the limit. This to me confirms that I have wired the limit switches correctly. I do not understand why the PCI-7344 isn't immediately halting the move as soon at the limit switch is detected?
In addition is there a way configure the default setting to issue a KILL axis signal rather than a HALT on detection of a limit switch?
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi Steve
Do you have the inhabit switch enabled in MAX? This should kill the axis signal. Take a look at this I think it might help.

  • Keyboard not working as expected

I woke up this morning and suddenly found a few problems with my keyboard:
The caps lock light is reversed so that the caps is off when the light is on and vice versa
The placement of some of the symbols are moved around. The @ is to the right of the P button and Shift-2 produces a ". Shift-9 is ), shift-8 is ( and many other switched like this.
Resetting PRAM or the computer doesnt fix this

    Hello there, morris152.
The following Knowlede Base article provides some great information for troubleshooting your issue with the keyboard:
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1381
    Particularly:
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Notification "Launch the app and go to the library" not working as expected

    Hello,
we are sending notification "Launch the app and go to the library" - but it's not working as expected, it's still just launching app with last open folio.
Whats wrong there? Do we need v30 app? We have V29, but this is not mentioned in documentation.
    Thanks
    Martin

    Ah.
    Ok, now it's clear.
Anyway i would appreciate possibility to force viewer to switch to library view after new issue is detected, even without notification. Quite often requested feature - "there is new cover in Newsstand, but customer don't know how to download new publication easily".

What I have understood is that you recreated the EM repository. So where does "some of the future not working like date, etc." come into it? Are you checking date from EM ? Which application is not working, your application or EM or both or somethingn else? Tell us the complete version, error information and also post the output of

    Hi,
How have you defined the property "WAS host" for the portal system that you have created for the back-end?
You might get this error if the way you have defined this WAS host property and the way you are calling the portal are different. For example, if your WAS host property is "<hostname>:<portnumber>" and you are calling your portal as "localhost:<portnumber>", then you will get this error.
Also are you connecting to your portal using the fully qualified domain name? Don't call the portal simply as
<i>http://<host>:<port>/irj</i> but call it as http://<host>.<domain>:<port>/irj.

  • Application is not working due to memory issue

    Hi Friesnds,
Kindly help me regarding settings in java. Scenario is like that. I have one server having two jboss versions (jboss-4.2.3 GA and jboss- 3.2.6). Each having java memory (JVM settings) 1 GB. The total memory of that server is 3 GB.
Problem is that every two days my application is not working due to memory issue. Once i freed the memory (through run the commands - (1). sync
    (2). echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
    Application works fine.
I heared that the above command (echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches) can't run frequently because of server crash.
Kindly help me regarding this issue and provide the resolution.
Let me know if you need more information from my side.
    Thanks
    Ashish Shukla

All of the above.  I tested on 4 different networks and had no luck, I also had friends test my network and the other networks with their iPhones and all had no issues using FaceTime.
Also after I wiped my phone (erased all content and settings) I was able to successfully initiate a FaceTime call with no changes to my network and was also able to initiate another call when connected to another previously tested network that didn't work before.  Once I restored from backup though, FaceTime stopped working again.
I did find this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5163024?start=0&tstart=0
and tried the suggestions found there too.  That discussion describes my issue I am having as well.
