Arch install experience / install CD uses devfs path names

Hey, all I'm new to the forums, very happy arch user. I can't remember how I found arch, it must've been fate. I did my share of distro hopping. Actually, I plunged into the deep end with my first Linux install by choosing to run Gentoo. To their credit I was able to get it installed by relying on their solid documentation, even though I was an absolute novice at the time. Still I had to leave Gentoo because on the whole I'm too impatient to compile every single program from source.
I then drifted to Mandrake for a short time, and then Fedora for a longer time. I became intimately familiar with dependency hell, and tracking down specific versions of libraries. I like using a few bleeding edge programs that are compiled out of CVS or SVN, and I found that it was a nightmare satisfying dependencies and dealing with package conflcts. I also ran Ubuntu for literally about 5 minutes. I won't get into why that lasted such a short time.
I was on irc the the other day in a dev channel for bmpx, attempting to get the newest version of bmpx to run (still am). One of the devs asked me if I was running FC4 (Fedora Core 4). My response:
Me: "I don't think I'd have a snowball's chance in hell of getting this working under FC."
Dev: "I'm running FC5."
I had to swallow my words. Here I am, a proud arch user with a seg faulting bmpx while the dev is running it on FC. Moral of the story: that guy must be a magician. That or FC is much more up to date now. Still, nothing could convince me to abandon pacman and go back to RPMs. Pacman is a Godsend. The whole ABS system is beautiful.
I just recently reinstalled a fresh version of arch after something of a hiatus. A while ago I borked my system (I had an ugly situation with my partition table, among other things) and I didn't get around to resurrecting my install for a while.
Now this was before Xorg7, and uDev, and ArchCK's move to initramfs. Obviously I was upgrading after those things were introduced. To further enrich this unhealthy mix, I have an ATI Radeon 9800, 2 ethernet cards (onboard), and 2 sound cards (PCI, and onboard). It might go without saying that I had a rocky install experience. It was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle blindfolded. Then I came to the Arch site and read about all the changes. Even then it was a messy experience, what with uDev simultaneously loading modules and whatnot (turns out that this can be a problem on systems with multiple soundcards or NICs). Finally after a boatload of troubleshooting, and much reading of the Wiki and the forum, I got everything setup. Queue angelic choir: I even got 3d acceleration via fglrx to work thanks to Iphitus's drivers, and posts in the forum by Cerebral.
So I'm once again a happy arch user, but I'm glad it wasn't my first arch install. My first install was ultra smooth by comparison.
If you're still reading you're probably wondering if I'm going to make a point. Well since, I'm new to the forum I figured I'd give a little background for anyone interested, and a little hope to to anyone wrestling with their install.
Actually I do have a question which I alluded to in the subject of this post. I did an FTP install from a CD I downloaded several months ago.
The Grub installer gives this message:
"Arch Linux supports two /dev device systems, DevFS and uDev. You can select the one you want by modifying your bootloader's configuration."
Obviously now only uDev is supported so that message is outdated. Plus the auto-generated fstab and menu.lst use the DevFS device paths by default.
So my question is do the newer install CDs generate fstab and bootloader config files using the uDev naming scheme or do they still default to DevFS? I realize I was using an older CD, but it was confusing not knowing that DevFS had been completely abandoned.
Also there should be an initrd line added to the autogenerated bootloader config (can't remember if it's there or not).
Maybe these issues have already been addressed in newer install CDs. Hopefully they have for the sake of first-time installers.
Whew okay I'm done, thanks guys.

jesus franco wrote:It seems you have 0.7 even though 0.7.1 fixes all those devfs, initrd issues.
Yea I think I do have the 0.7 CD. I just do FTP installs anyway so I didn't bother downloading a new CD. I was kinda guessing that the newer CD probably sorts out the uDev / DevFS issue but I wasn't sure. Nothing to worry about then!

  • How do I use long path names ("\\?\UNC\...") with Server 2008 roaming profiles?

    Hey folks!
    I administrate a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Domain with about 40 users on
Windows 7 SP1 clients. Because the users often switch between the many PCs, I am using Roaming Profiles which tend to produce errors with different application-specific paths and files inside the users profiles.
As one of many example, our standard mail application Thunderbird produces paths and files according to folders/subfolders and mails in a user's mailbox. Another one is Microsoft Office's Auto Recovery files which reside in a user's profile and can
    get very long.
These paths and filenames often extend the allowed max. path of about 256 characters, when (on log on or off) the synchronization process between the client and the server takes place, leading to errors in the event log and a notification to the user about
    the conflict:
"Event ID 1509 - Windows cannot copy file \\server\share\users\user123.v2\AppData\Roaming\looooong to location C:\Users\user123\AppData\Roaming\looooong. DETAIL - The filename or extension is too long."
In the long run this leads to different file versions on different clients which - in the case of Thunderbird - leads to missing mails.
After extensive searches and lectures of forums - including this - I haven't found a solution for this problem.
So my question is if there's a way to use the extended max path with roaming profiles and if so how do I get it to work?
I tried changing the profile path of a test user in the Active Directory user preferences from "\\server\share\profiles\test_user" to something like "\\?\UNC\server\share\profiles\test_user" without any changes in the system's behavior.
Also I think that because this is such a fundamental problem somebody must have come up with a solution for it...
    Thanks in advance,
    Nico

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
The Event 1509 can happen if the destination path of the users profile is on a server with a long name and share folder name. For detail information, please refer to:

  • RSCRM_BAPI - using logical path

    Hi everybody,
I use rscrm_bapi in order to export data from bw.
Is it possible to use logical path name in this interface?
I try to write in the path field a logical path name which was define earlier (tran file),
but the system concatenate the logical path name with the file name.
    For example:
    File name: HANA
    Path name: HADAR
    result in al11: /defualt directory/HADARHANA
What is the right way to do it?
    Hadar

RSCRM_BAPI - directly dumps a query as a .CSV in the app server - for an APD to work - you cannot specify the filename but then by specifyinf a logical file name - it can be run multiple times without any changes...

  • Install problem - unable to mount devfs

I tried to install Arch and get "Unable to mount devfs" and then a kernel panic.
I tried with kernels 2.4 and 2.6 included in the arch 0.7 cd and all give me the same error.
Also follow the instructions here http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/Qu … %20Install. Same error.
How do I fix this. TIA

The /disc0 part is the MBR (Master Boot Record), which is where I have always installed my bootloader, without issue I might add. So /disc0 is not the problem, something else is.
    Hmm, but what....
When you install grub to that directory does it spit out any errors? Or does the installer say that it installed just fine?
Also if you try to reinstall, check console 5 (alt+F5) and see if it says anything regarding grub.
What file system are you running with? Ext3, reiserfs, xfs etc...?
You could also try and use udev instead. When editing the config files during that part of the install, go and read the grub file. It will tell you how to use udev.
I can't think of anything else right now (2:25 am where I am...), if I think  of anything else I'll post.

  • Arch 0.7 install of xorg....corrupted(weird solution)

I have attempted to download xorg at least a dozen times, using archlinux.org/current/os/i686 ftp source.
Each time I receive a corrupted file.
I enter.... pacman-Scc....and clear the cache.
Repeat...pacman -Sy xorg... obtain the same result...corrupted file in archive.
My connection to the internet is adsl and the download proceeds at 88KB/sec.
This performance of arch download system for wombat0.7 suggests that many would-be users will not log-in.  Much ado on the internet news about arch, too.
Whazzup?  What to do to fix?

    Cactus,
Happy to hear from you again.
I have run memtest 86 on all ram, replaced the 512RAM chip under lifetime warranty and have passed all tests on the 1GB memory chips.
If I used another test program, like a second opinion in medicine, which should I believe?
The only solution I see is to use only 2.5GB using the 512GB ram chip as #1.
I haven't looked that problem solver in the eye yet.  Easy to try though.
I have had the 3GB memory in for many months and had one problem until arch 0.7CD install.  It could be the bad apple but no way to know unless I redownload and burn a new CD while using only 512MB RAM.
You must realize I spent many hours chasing xorg and when I finally got it installed, it hasn't got a driver for my display card.  That is a vdt to play on a noobie....a noobie is an expert trying a new installCD for the first time!  Same treatment with XFree86..no ATI driver.  I'm dead and it was an "upgrade".  Had display for many
    , many months but nevermore!
    I will not chase it!!!!
The "WOMBAT" has sharp teeth and bites first and answers questions later.  I think its poisonous to computers!
A WARNING in many languages is needed for new installs via arch0.7 to those with ATI display pci cards.
Wonder of wonders...Knoppix detects the ATI card without xorg and XFree86 and their config conundrums.  Many Live CD installs are the same result:detected..  I have tried a half dozen or so.
I have questions outstanding on forums in arch that have no replies and they should start some dialog...none.
I have had a question in many forums...never answered... only one person in my experience has answered it...appears below..

  • Error in installing Experience Manager.

    Hi all,
    I have installed -
    1)MDEX

    4)Document Converter.
    5)Deployment Template.
    6)Oracle Endeca Guided Search 2.1.2 for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)      V31161-01

    My question is -
There is two components in https://edelivery.oracle.com-
    a)Oracle Endeca Experience Manager 2.1.2 for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)      V31162-01      80M
b)Oracle Endeca Experience Manager Extensions 2.1.2 for Generic Platform      V31169-01      71M
Which one I have use to avail the experience manager's functionality (Template creation etcs ).
Or I have to use both the versions ?
What are the components need to be installed to work perfectly with experience manager .?
    Regards,
    Hoque

Hi Hoque. I know it is a bit confusing and we are working to simplify things in future releases, but you will want to install
    either
    Oracle Endeca Guided Search 2.1.2
    or
    Oracle Endeca Experience Manager 2.1.2
but you do not need both.
Oracle Experience Manager includes Endeca Workbench and the Experience Manager tool and is the option you'll use when the deployment includes a license for Oracle Endeca Experience Manager. The Oracle Endeca Guided Search package includes Endeca Workbench and the Rule Manager tool and will be used for deployments that do not include Experience Manager.
If you're starting a new project, I recommend starting with 3.1 instead.

  • What are the steps to make it seamless for a customer to use the install program and then use the installed program?

I wrote an install program (.exe) that is downloaded from a website.  When run, it 1) leads a customer to browse to a directory, and 2) copies files (.exe, .dll, etc.) from a website to that directory.  When I run, the installed program works.
What are the steps to make it seamless for a customer to use the install program and then use the installed program?

    bhs67
    Hello,
The default feature does support the task for your requirement, so there is no need to pay for the other features unless you want to use some feature which is not free.
    In addition, as this thread
InstallShield LE not available with VS 2012 RTM? shared, even through there is a link to InstallShield LE in the New Project dialog under Deployment solutions, but it belongs to third-party that I would recommend you consider posting this issue

  • My experience installing CF7 (From a long-time CF admin and user)

I am a long-time administrator of Coldfusion and a serious
designer. I've used Coldfusion since version 2 and am the person
who brought CF into our architecture as a keystone technology.
In all of that time, I've *never* had the problems I've had
with installing version 7 to a number of servers in my research
laboratory. I'm a paying client who has serious investment in
Coldfusion through quite a serious chunk of my enterprise. I'm the
corporate webmaster for my company, and to be honest, I'm less than
pleased with this inferior release and seeming inability of
Abobe/Macromedia to insure quality control on ALL apsects of their
    operation.
I have just spent the last 3 days in a knock-down drag out
battle with my simple Windows XP dev laptop to install the product
for a project I'd like to work on. Similarly, a number of my
laboratory systems have had equally interesting issues with their
installation process and once again, equally unacceptable results
until I arm-wrestled these systems into place.
So... For the benefit of those who have been around the block
like myself, I offer some of my experience:
    1. Use install disks rather than the horrid download that
flat DOES NOT WORK from Macromedia for "tryout" of product... What
a waste of time and effort. The effect of this has been to turn off
many prospective customers and fans of the product. Who is driving
the boat on this disasterous course and quality control issue? Is
this some kind of "drive the customer" away ploy for some new
product or platform to be offered?
    2. Followed instructions at
    http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_19575
    - This finally worked IF you pay detailed attention to every last
detail. You can "borrow" jrun.dll from another successful install
of CF 7 if you can get your hands on the DLL or go spend more time
learning how to extract the file as noted in some of the
literature, which, to a paying customer, should be documented in
detail with the article... Quit sending people on wild-goose
    chases.
    3. Once install occured for me on laptop, I had problems with
the login for cfide/admin - The migration wizard would not let me
go further. It always returned me back to login prompt. I looked
into the matter further and decided to "borrow" the neo-query.xml
file from a seasoned system and use it on my laptop to kick-start
the final part of my install. This worked and I now can control my
    server.
Summary: I've fought version 7 from day one. My advice is to
abandon downloads from Macromedia on the product and go with
requesting install disks that actually do give you a shot at making
the product work. Secondly, realize that there may be other issues
with the install once you do get the product to communicate with
your server and be willing to research the issues, since, once you
find the answers, the product actually works pretty nicely.
Thirdly, Write letters like I am doing now to tell Macromedia/Abobe
how you feel about this inferior and totally unacceptable
installation procedure and to improve the quality of their download
    trials.
Personally, I think there should be a kit made available with
a full copy of the CFusionMX7 directory set up as a virgin and
workable install to fix the rash of issues out there. If not
available from Macromedia, then I'd suggest that it be made
available on user Coldfusion forums and sites to ease the pain and
let the bloody system work for those who just want to build cool
things with what has always been the superior web development
    toolset.
I love Coldfusion, but if this is the future, I certainly
know my options with Blue Dragon and other platforms... I'd hate to
lose my confidence in Adobe/Macromedia, but this latest set of
issues has me wondering exactly what is going on over at the
    Coldfusion labs...
I hope my experience and advice help others who may be going
through the same challenges I have faced...
    Jon

    Jon,
As another long time CF Admin/Dev I second everything you've
    said here..
    I've been using the CFMX/JRun mix for years now and love it;
but I'm always finding myself spending way too much valuable time
looking through these boards for solutions.
I particularly like the idea of setting up a 'kit' with a
full dir structure, etc. - That would be a great idea for newer
users.. I'd also like to see better commenting or readmes that
fully explain the configuration options for all files - such as all
of the xml files under the WEB-INF dir..
There have been a few too many times that I've looked in the
documentation only to have it tell me to get a book for 'advanced
config options' - and I wouldn't consider any of what I'm looking
to do to be 'advanced'.. thank god for Ben Forta!

  • Titan Installation: make install expects to find binaries in PATH it just installed

    Steps to reproduce:
    cd ~/3rdPartyApps
    git clone https://github.com/eclipse/titan.core titan
    cd titan
    Add Makefile.personal with this content:
    TTCN3_DIR := /path/to/install/titan/
    OPENSSL_DIR := /usr
    JDKDIR := /etc/java-config-2/current-system-vm
    XMLDIR := /usr
    JNI := yes
    GEN_PDF := no
    Build: make
    Try to install: make install
    This fails with:

    Solution:
"make install" should use absolute or relative paths to the binaries in "titan/bin".

    Hi Lars,
I have added a new section to README.linux:

  • Installing OIM connectors using a different name.

    Hello,
In my OIM environment, I have two target resources that are sun directories.
In my OIM env I installed an 9.0.4.12 SJSDS connector (OIM version is 9.1.0.2). The out of the box connector names all OIM artifacts using the convention IPLANET or IPNT (e.g. UD_IPNT_USR, adpIPLANETMODIFYUSER).
Since I want two instances of this connector I need to use a different name. To customize this name do I need to edit the xml files (iPlanetResourceObject.xml, iPlanetXLResourceObject.xml)? Seems very tedious and error-prone.
Has anyone done this, can you share your experiences.
    Thanks,
    Sunny

It is a very common method to enable support of multiple AD domains (with different ROs).
It is tedious and error prone but it is the easiest way to get this done. You may want to consider writing some XSLT to automate parts of the process.
    Best regards

  • In arch, can we install krita without koffice?

    Well... just that...
in arch, can we install krita without all the other apps of koffice?
Currently I want to try/use features in krita, not the other apps of koffice...
    any idea?

If someone wants to split koffice and is willing to keep it maintained, we can host the packages + a svn repo for the PKGBUILDs on the server where KDEmod resides...
Splitting should be easy. Just check the output of configure, at some point it says "Checking if krita should be compiled" for example. At this point you can see every app/component that can be splitted into a single package.
To split koffice you need to set the DO_NOT_COMPILE shell variable. For KDEmod we split every single app but keep the libs/docs/shared things in a so called base package called kdetoys-base for example. Here is an example of a base package and an inherent splitted one.
If someone wants to do this, just contact me

    Hi:
    Anyone have experience installing 9ias r2 on RH7.3 or Suse 8 ?
    I would prefer RH 7.3!
If anyone know the tricks and steps to get it installed please post them here gently :)))
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello
I did a clean install with suse 8.0 . This is my configuration and basic installation steps.
Installed suse8 with pdksh (k shell, will not install by default )and Swap space 1GB
The hostname and IP adrress was in /etc/hosts file (Some shell scripts hardcode IP, Lot of problems when try to change IP address after installation)
Created iasdba group (didnt use the oracle user comes with suse)
Created ias user (made the home directory as /u1/ias , u1 is another mount point or can be a subdirectory under root )
logged in as ias user and set all env variables (created a shell script called set_ias_inf and put everything in it)
Install the infrastructure first (watch for the creation of genclntsh in $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory, as soon as it created from installation , made the following modification in the line starting with SYSLIBS, added the following line after -lc ,
    -lgcc -L/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-suse-linux/2.95.3/
Installation completed and all required services started without any problem
To check did http://server:1810 and connect to em with ias_admin and passwd
stop the em from the suse box
    emctl stop
Login as ias and created another shell script called set_ias_as (copied from the previous one and change the ORACLE_HOME to /u1/ias/90200/as for AS installation
Completed the AS installation with everything and did the same change as INF installation
    Select the default character set
    select the instance as instance2
    Completed the installation
    All services started successfully

I realize that this might be a stupid question but I just want to be sure.
Do I need to install the Codecs listed on the Arch Wiki if I'm using VLC (for video) and Clementine (for audio)? If not, then is there any situation you can think of where I might need those codecs installed even after I have the necessary media apps?

I must install Snow Leopard to use iCloud fully. Is IMovie 6 and iDVD vs 7.0/4 compatible with Snow Leopard?

You were misinformed. iCloud requires 10.7.2 or later. Snow Leopard is required to upgrade to either Lion or Mountain Lion. See the following for the upgrade path and information to determine if your computer can be upgraded.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)

MacBook Pro 8,1 – Intel Core i5 – 2.23 GHz (early 2011) New with OSX 10.6 – current on all updates.
I successfully installed rEFit. I used Boot Camp to install Win 7.  All was great.
Then installed debian 6.  Somehow after the debian install and restart (I know this sounds crazy) but I am now reduced to Win 7 only. rEFit is not present when rebooting nor is OSX or debian. Further, I am unable to force the install DVD to launch when rebooting, by holding C, D or F8.  The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock. I have attempted the root and local pw- no go. Restart holding D takes me to the windows boot manager. I have attempted several options within the Advanced Options; including – Repair Your computer, safe mode and “last known good config,” All of which did nothing.
I can see all my OSX files within win7. I tried to install the OSX within windows. Ya right, that did nothing..
I only desire to get back to OSX...
    What are my options??

Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
    You could replace the drive.

Is this holding option while booting?
There was someone else around here who hosed their Mac with a Linux disk too. Try to find it.
