Arch VPS (looking for a comparable plan/host) JaguarPC Business

I have used JaguarPC in the past and love it's packages, it irks me that they don't have a handful of distro's like other hosts but offer a lot of bandwidth space.
This is what I was going to order but I rather stick to the OS I know, and a tip for people thinking about using arch use ABS for packages and always, always, always ask questions before updating or keep an eye on the wiki/abs to make sure it's stable.
This is JaguarPCs Business VPS plain, I'm looking for a comparable plan with a host that offers Arch or even Gentoo Linux.  I don't hate debian, I do not like CentOS and RPMs, arch is a cleaner OS imo.
100 GB Disk Space
    5,000 GB Bandwidth
    2048 MB RAM
    4096 MB Burst RAM
    Equal CPU (2 core min.)
The price is $50/mo and I'd like to stick around that price if possible but I can go higher if needed, just don't want to pay more just cause of a different OS.

Where are you located? FanaticalVPS is what a friend and I use, but it is located in Germany. Sometimes the lag is higher than you might want but for the most part it is fine. I made a post in this thread about some of the other downsides. And some of the upsides Make sure you look into the uptime thing though, it may be unacceptable to you.
You'd need a Huge for $30/month and a $10-$20/month RAM upgrade to get the specs you want. I don't know about the CPU stuff, you'd have to talk to support or look at their page. Bandwidth is "fair-usage unlimited." If you're paying that much I'm sure you'd get 5TB out of it, but best ask to be sure. I pay for a Mini and fair usage for that is like 1.5TB. They support Arch of course.
Edit: Forgot to mention! There's a wiki page about VPS's that support Arch.

  • What to look for in a web hosting company for Flex applications

    Hello,
I am trying to figure out what I need to look for in a web
hosting company if I want to deploy my own Flex applications? I
don't anticipate having any special requirements other than the
ability to interact with databases and XML files. Can someone help
me figure out what the server-side requirements are?
    Thanks in advance!
    Matt

then almost 99.9% hosting will work.
if you want a Flexx app with compiler then oo thats different
but as you say "I don't anticipate having any special requirements
other than the ability to interact with databases and XML files"
then you can go with pretty much any hosting, as long as they have
apache, Database serve and I think thats it.

Requires each device/user have an unique Apple ID(verifiable email address):
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8
Otherwise you can use Find My Phone, but requires logging in for each separate user. Find My Friends(built by Apple) will show everyone's location on one device.

  • What to look for in Execution plans ?

    Hi Pals,
Assuming the query execution is slow , I have collected the xml plan. What should I look for in the actual execution plan . What are the top 10 things I need to watch out for?
I know this is a broad and generic question but I am looking for anyone who is experienced in query tuning to answer this question.
    Thanks in Advance.

Reading execution plans is a bit of an art. But a couple of things:
    1) Download and install SQL Sentry Plan Explorer (www.sqlsentry.net). This is a free tool that in msny cases gives a better experience to look at execution plans, particularly big and ugly ones.
    2) I usually look for the thickest arrows, as thickness indicates the number of rows being processed.
    3) Look for deviations between estimates and actual values, as these deviations are often the source for bad performance. In Plan Explorer, you can quickly flip between the too. In SSMS you need to look at the popup for every operator. (But again, it is
the operator with fat arrows that are of most interest - and those before them.
    4) The way to read the plan is that the left-most operator asks the operators it is connected to for data. The net effect is that data flows from right to left, and the right-hand side if often more interesting.
    5) Don't pay much attention to the percentages about operator cost. These percentages are estimates only,
not actual values. They are only reliable if the estimates are correct all the way through - and when you have a bad plan that is rarely the case.
This was the overall advice. Then there is more specific one: are indexes being used when expected? Note that scans are necessarily not bad. Sometimes your problem is that you have a loop join + index seek, when you should have had two scans and a hash join.
Try to get a grip of how you would process the query, if you had to do it manually. Does the plan match that idea?

I'm not qualified to give much advice on the rest of your post, but the above statement is True. RAW files contain an embedded JPG. The embedded JPG is used by Aperture before a preview JPG is created (or if you have disabled preview generation).

  • File storage limits for a web site hosted on Business Catalyst

    Hi,
I have three sites currently hosted by other web hosting companies.  Each site uses a lot of video files so the site folder size for each site is approximately 10 GB.  What business catalyst plan would I need to host three sites each of approximately 10 GB each.  Also, I am getting ready to transition to HTML5 video which will mean adding additional video files.  Is Business Catalyst capable of handling and presenting video files?
    Thanks
    Joe

If you are uploading alot of video it maybe better to 'add in' a seperate system eg viddler. This can link nicely to BC and is better suited to video.

  • Looking for Master Thesis suggestion in SAP Business Intelligence Area

    Hi,
I am in final semester of my masters program in Electronic Business. I have studied SAP ERP (SAP ECC 6- MM, SD, PP) and Datawarehouse (DW structures, Reporting, ETL, etc) with SAP BW 3.5. I have also learned and worked with ABAP programing.
I am interested to do my masters thesis in SAP-BI area. Kindly guide me regarding some topics or current issues which i can further explore and work on.
    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi Moshin,
You have to learn SAP BW 3.5 along with ABAP and BI 7.0. Because BW 3.5 is the earlier version of BI 7.0.
BO is widely used for Reporting which can work on any database.
It's better to join in SAP Authorized Institutes like the following. It may be expensive.
    1. Siemens

  • Looking for new web hosting

I'm currently hosting my site through GoDaddy. Plain and simple, I am looking to switch from them because of the way they choose to advertise their product. I'm looking for a new web hosting company to host my site and need some help finding a good one.
As for price, I'm looking for something in the same price range as GoDaddy. After a little research, these are the few that I've found:
    iPage
    BlueHost
    InMotion Hosting
I'm pretty confident in my ability to choose a good one, but I just want to be sure there's nothing I'm missing about web hosting that would make it smart for me to avoid any of the above. Just a few notes about what I'm working with:
My site was made in DreamWeaver. The entire site is 17 html pages. It just contains mostly text, some spry and some embedded video, so not a lot needed for data usage.
If there is any other information needed for you to help me, let me know. Thanks!
    -Mark

If I were you I would go check out reviews on webhostingtalk.com .  Very reliable forum for reviews and sometimes hosts like those post specials over there so you don't start off paying full price.

  • OpenVZ based Arch Linux VPS's off-line at several hosting providers

    Hello all,
I have a number of Arch Linux OpenVZ based VPS's with a good number of hosting providers. For the last year+ I have done a regular weekly update (pacman -Syu cron job) on all my VPS's. The last update round rendered all my VPS's unbootable on every host. It looks like the package update "linux-api-headers 2.6.36.2-1" does not play well with the kernels that have OpenVZ support baked in. Currently I have VPS's offline with Virpus and ZoomVPS/BoostHosting amongst others. Virpus and Zoom have booth been rather unresponsive for a number of days now. I have to think other Arch VPS users are feeling this because at lest one VM was nearly a brand new vanilla install and was impact just like the others. Are there any other Arch users out there effect by this? Have any hosting providers found a fix? Any info would be great.

My hosts would not upgrade and or spoof their kernel on my node so to solve my situation I restored an older backup and followed these directions (http://irony.at/archlinux-openvz-glib) ignoring upgrades to glibe (IgnorePkg), installing a custom build of glib and then applying regular updates. My systems back online and I have learned my lesson about pacman -Syu cron jobs. Sure does make you think that Xen-HVM hosting might be worth the minimal additional cost.

  • Looking for comment on disaster recovery plan

Looking for some comment on where we are and where we’re planning on going with our Continuity of Operations / Disaster Recovery plan.
Current setup is Oracle 10.2.0.2.0 on HP-UX Itanium 64-bit. OAS / Forms 9i on a separate HP-UX Itanium box. We do not have control over the version of Oracle or the hardware. I am pushing the powers that be on upgrading to 10.2.0.4, but am not holding my breath.
Basic backup is threefold. DB is in archivelog mode. RMAN full backup is taken weekly. Incremental backup taken daily. These backups are to disk. In addition, a daily full-system backup (to tape) is done with the db shut down, providing a daily cold backup as well as backup of the online backups. Also daily exports – full and schema specific.
All db files are on an HP SAN unit. SAN replication software is used to mirror all i/o to a similar unit located at a sister site. Likewise, they replicate their SAN to ours. Each site has a pair of backup servers to be used by the other site if needed. Sister site has already tested loading our backup servers, mounting the mirror of their SAN, and starting the db.
Since sister site is a couple of hours away and crosses major network boundaries, management would like to also put up a DataGuard standby at a facility only 30 minutes away and within our own network. Plan is to host that on duplicate HP servers, but disk would be on a NAS instead of a SAN.
I have managed a DataGuard setup, but did not create/configure it, so am now digging into the docs, starting with the DataGuard Concepts. I’ve never worked with NAS and am not clear on how it differs from SAN, and what the implications are.
I'm looking for any comment, especially any red flags, on what I’ve described.

    Satish Kandi wrote:
Not an expert comment on your setup but just the thoughts that came to my mind while reading this...
    1. What is the setup for backup preservation? Is it in one of the servers only? Is the backup also replicated?Belt and suspenders. The backup location on disk is part of what gets mirrored to the sister SAN. Plus, the nightly system backup to tape picks it up as well.
    2. What about OAS/Forms 9i backup? You have not mentioned anything about that. That is also mirrored to the sister SAN.
    3. What is the archive log generation frequency? Or how much data loss can you afford?A typical day will see one or two dozen archivelog files.
    >
In addition, a daily full-system backup (to tape) is done with the db shut down, providing a daily cold backup as well as backup of the online backupsLucky you :-) but I don't see a need for this with the levels of backup that you have (especially with RMAN weekly backup and daily archive log backup). No, no need, but it does give us another layer at no real cost. This cold backup is really just a byproduct of a daily full system shutdown and backup. We have a high tolerance for system down time, but low tolerance for data loss.

  • Making an Arch Linux wiki-reader Android app - Looking for some advice

Hey guys, hopefully this is an ok place to post this. I've just finished a beginning Java course and I'm starting on the next one. I'm learning Java with the intention of creating Android applications as a hobby. Since I've found myself accessing the wiki from my phone on many occasions, and this doesn't seem overly difficult, I think this is a good place to start.
I've been playing with this idea for a couple of weeks and I'm trying to determine the best way to approach this. I'm looking for any pointers/advice from a development standpoint and any (potential) user feedback as well.
So far, with the help of other Archers, I have come up with the following three options:
    1) Obvious choice- Connect to the actual wiki online
    Pros:
    +Always up to date
    +Small application size
    Cons:
-More difficult to strip current style and "mobilize" layout (there is a lot of clutter and links to outside of the wiki)
    -More permissions that other choices
    -Requires internet connection
    2) Use the arch-wiki-docs package
    Pros:
    +Offline
    +Easier to add css styles
    +Hopefully would require zero permissions
    Cons:
-Application would be large ~40MB (Maybe it could be reduced by removing non-english languages?)
-Not up to date, but pretty close
    3) Use the arch-wiki-lite package
    Pros:
    +Offline
    +Small application size
    +Hopefully would require zero permission
+More of a native android application feel instead of a dedicated webpage reader
    Cons:
    -No links to other pages
-Would need to create style/layout from scratch
-Not really sure how this would work (Searching, etc)
-Not up to date, but pretty close
Right now I'm leaning towards the second option, but only if I can figure out an automated way to strip down the html pages and remove the non-english pages. I'm thinking that I'll start with an English only version, then add international support (or a second version) later on if people want it. What are your thoughts?

    Thanks for the response!
rickeyski wrote: 1. Any app you make will require you to generate your own layouts android uses xml layouts there are webviews, which provide some of this functionality if you need to use html, however this will require online access.
The arch-wiki-docs package is in HTML and I'm using WebView to read it locally. The arch-wiki-lite package is a text file. Maybe I could import it into a database? Either way, using that package will require me to create the whole layout.
rickeyski wrote:  2 you could use a wrapper like phonegap, but that would me writing everything in html, css, javascript and you will use virtually none of your java.
I've used Titanium Studio before, which I think is pretty similar to Phonegap, but I do want to make this one with Java.
rickeyski wrote: 3. 40 mb is a huge app, granted its before compression, but its also before all of your code and layouts to make it work.. You would be limiting yourself to only the newest androids, don't know which phone you have in mind, but might not be a problem for you.
40MB is the compressed size. The html docs are over 100MB uncompressed. I think I could significantly reduce the size by removing the non-english pages, but I can't figure out a systematic way to find them. There are 3551 pages and they use names like 00000965.html, 00000967.html, 00000968.html, 00000974.html, etc. (Of those 967 isn't english, but the other three are.)
rickeyski wrote: 4. the biggest plus is the android docs and examples apps are very good, start reading.
Yup. I've been reading through those a lot. They are a big help.

  • AirPort Extreme (Still) Looking for a PPPoE Host

Help! I have a PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.4.2) that I've used with my AirPort Extreme for over a year and half without any major problems. I upgraded to AirPort 4.2 last week without incident, but since yesterday my base station hasn't been able to connect over PPPoE to my DSL.
Sometimes the AirPort Admin Utility can't find the base station, even after a hard reset; sometimes it can find it but not configure it ("there was an error configuring the base station"). Even if I can connect to the base station and configure it, though, the base station still won't connect to the internet ("Looking for PPPoE host" for about 5 minutes, followed by "Not connected via PPPoE. There was no answer.") I can get on the internet without any problems if I connect through the built-in Ethernet, at least once completely reconfigure the network port settings.
I'm not sure what to do at this point; I've tried to reset both the base station and the modem over 20 times (including leaving them unplugged for an hour), and "rebuilding AirPort from scratch" like one of the other posts suggested, but nothing seems to work. At this point I'm considering re-installing the software AirPort came with (3.1) or re-installing Tiger, though I'm not sure 3.1 will work with Tiger--and I'd prefer not to rebuild the entire system.
    Any ideas?

I'm suffering from the same problem but was able able to run airTunes. First, go to admin and tell it not to connect using PPPoE but make sure you uncheck the PPPoE in Network. Now the other problem that I have is the latest Airport Admin Utility. It will not connect. Solid green light, AE is just a metre away and it says 'can't connect to the net. So how do I remove Admin 6.4 'cause that's the main problem. i've installed the Express firmware 6.1.1 & 6.2. I'm buggerd if I know.
