Archive Performance

Hi there,
In a standby database configuration I'm using the following query to determine the MB per second of archivelogs being written to the first five archivelog destinations.
select next_time,
       nvl(avg(case when ad.dest_name = 'LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_1' and (completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60 > 0
            then (blocks * block_size/1024/1024) / ((completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60) end),0) as DEST_1,
       nvl(avg(case when ad.dest_name = 'LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2' and (completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60 > 0
            then (blocks * block_size/1024/1024) / ((completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60) end),0) as DEST_2,
       nvl(avg(case when ad.dest_name = 'LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_3' and (completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60 > 0
            then (blocks * block_size/1024/1024) / ((completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60) end),0) as DEST_3,
       nvl(avg(case when ad.dest_name = 'LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_4' and (completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60 > 0
            then (blocks * block_size/1024/1024) / ((completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60) end),0) as DEST_4,
       nvl(avg(case when ad.dest_name = 'LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_5' and (completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60 > 0
            then (blocks * block_size/1024/1024) / ((completion_time - next_time) * 24 * 60 * 60) end),0) as DEST_5
from v$archived_log al,
     v$archive_dest ad
where al.dest_id = ad.dest_id
group by next_time
order by next_time;The logic behind the script depends on the fact that the next_time column in the v$archived_log table refers to the point in time when the redo log is switched and writing to the archive log destinations begin, can anyone confirm if this is the case? If not, what is the best way to determine the performance of writing the archive destinations?
Note: I know the script is not optimised, I want to get the logic correct before progressing to performance etc.
Thank you
ezuall

Larry,
Thank you for the feedback.
The first destination is local and the other 4 are remote standby destinations.
I am trying to work out at what rate (in MB per second) archivelogs are being written to each destination. I'm hoping this will help me to get an overview of how well the standby destinations are working and how much redo could be created in the Primary Database before the standby databases can no longer keep up.

  • Lightroom 2.5 Archiving & Performance

    First, I appreciate your help.
We are working on incorporating Lightroom into our workflow and have a couple of questions about Archiving.  We currently have x00,000 images on backup drives, active on our network, that we have not imported into Lightroom.  In looking at the catalogue and metadata search capabilities, I would find great benefit to be able to search all of our images (currently we are using Google Desktop to search archived files - by name).  So here is a set of questions:
    (1)  Does anyone have experience with this volume of images in a catalogue and is there an impact on performance (currently I only have around 7,000 images in my catalogue).
    (2)  If we take the archived images completely offline does the catalogue maintain a preview or is that stored in the .xmp or raw file.  One of the issues I have with Google Desktop is that I cannot display a NEF file for a quick scan.  Again I am worried about performance if a find through the catalogue has to reference the raw file to build a preview.
So what I am thinking here is that I would need to churn through an import process over the course of weekends and then be able to use the "ITunes" functionality of creating collections independent of the file structure that has been in place.
Thank you again for your help.
    Travis

LR 2  is said to show some performance issues with very large catalogs...this is one of the issues being addressed in LR 3, my catalog is only around 50,000 so can't say it has ever affected me.
Previews of files are generated on import and retained for whatever period of time you set in preferences ( 1 week, 1 month, for ever). These can be viewed whilst the images are off line and are stored in a separate folder with the catalog and not in the xmp data associated with the file itself.
I think you will find that even with some of the relatively minor performance issues associated with very large (and we are talking over 100,00 files) the functionality of LR 2 will be far better than any other methods of cataloging images, but you should make sure you back up everything (including the original files) on import in the same folder structure as the files are presently in (makes it much easier for LR to use the backup files if the originals are lost). After import folder structures are irrelevant and you can use collections, keywords and anything in metadata for locating images quickly in the future..

  • Archiving - Performance

    Hi Friends,
We had Archived  FI  data for year 2005 for a table
When we run the select query for that table for year 2005 , it is taking lot of time , around 60,000 secs
When we run for 2006,2007 and 2008 , select query is completed within 120 secs
I would like to know if  write select query on table which is archived for an year, will it effect any performance?
    Thanks
    Chandra

    Hi Chandra,
I am also in a archiving project and would like to know which statistics you are talking about. Please provide some information so I can also get it done for my project.
Also I am facing some in COPA data archiving, while using COPA1_XXXX object its took 95 hrs to runt he job and resulted in cancellation of the job. I have activated index 3 for table CE1XXXX. If you know some thing on COPA archiving please tell me.

  • How to improve ODS archiving performance ?

    Hello,
We are having a huge ODS with nearby 800 millions records. We are
planning to archive this ODS as soon as possible. We've begun to
archive the ODS month by month, but as you can imagine the write/delete
(SARA) process is very slow (full table scan).
We have done a test with 7 million records to delete :
    It took us :
2 hours : SARA Write process (create archive files)
12 hours : SARA Delete process (execute delete program)
Our ODS contains 45 millions records per month, we can launch the archive jobs in our production environnement only during the week end.
    It will take us months
    to complete our archiving scenario.
How can we improve the archiving process ?
We don't really need the data that are beyond 18 months, is there a
better way to delete those data : selective deletion ?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

    Hi,
When you are running archiving process...queries might not run or will have bad performance...even a lock can happen...so..Just a idea,
As you said..you require only...Last 18 months data for Query..
So Create/make a new Shadow ODS ZSDO0002 ..should have similar Charateristics and KF.
Then  make full Load from Your ODS(which you have to archive)..with selection in Infopackage for last 18 months only.
    Make a INIT.
Then Latest Delta should come to this..ODS (ZSDO0002)...not to your old ODS.
Now, Copy the Queries from your old ODS to new OLD...with RSZC
    Now archive your old ODS.
    Regards,
    San!

  • Getting time when online log switches; archiver start, ends

    Hi
    I am using "Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production"
Is there a possibility to check the exact time
-when do online redo log switch
-when does Archiver start and finish his archiving online logs
I would like to tune archiver performance.
    Thanks for answers
    Groxy

In my current configuration I am getting a lot of "waits" (processes waiting form commit)
I would like to see if there is any relation of archiving process with "waits" in my application. Redo logs currently siwtch upto 6 times /hour. My ideas is to increase redo log size from 150MB to e.g 300MB and give archiver less priority, so there are no peaks, which consumes significant amount of disk I/O and the process of archiving will be spreaded.

  • Prime Infrastructure 2.1 Compliance Licensing

Till Date LMS and Cisco Prime Infrastructure are standalone applications and do not operate in sync.
If you deploy a new application server for LMS, it will be working separately and you can have its compliance manager running with this license applied.
Don't expect integration. Even though PI is eventually destined to be the primary NMS application from cisco and LMS to suppose be phased out, still CPI hasn't reached the feature parity as per LMS, so we still offer our customer's option to run LMS for those features they don't find in CPI.
So as per your question :
So does this mean, if I have purchased the compliance licenses, I have to deploy LMS 4.2 to utilize these licenses?
    The Answer is unfortunately yes.
    -Thanks
    Vinod

Yes, ideally you should have received multiple PAK or license files, like base license for PI and add-on device license etc. Any one of them having **LMS** in the PAK/Licence file name refers to a LMS license.
You should check more details with the vendor or your cisco's account manager.
LMS has various modules embedded in itself like configuration archive, performance, monitoring, inventory management, compliance manager etc.
It has central device repository from where all these modules get device and credential information. You'll have to configure various compliance jobs/templates etc with one or group of devices to run once or periodically.
Compliance DB stays in sync with LMS and from there you can use it. If you are planning to use Compliance, you can install LMS and use compliance under 60 days evaluation period.
For more details check the document :

  • RAR: Alerts tables understanding

    Hi,
After running alert generation role specifying just critical actions flag and a specific risk that includes a few transactions we have identified that the following tables are containing data:
VIRSA_CC_ALLASTRUN: Dates and time when alert generation job finished
VIRSA_CC_ALLISTHDR: Header data that is shown under alers' reports.
VIRSA_CC_ALLISTDTL: Details for the alerts identified (in our case critical trnasactions)
VIRSA_CC_ALTCDLOG: Last time a user executed a transaction within the period alert generation was executed
VIRSA_CC_ACTUSAGE: All transactions executed by users (transactions are shown several times but differs on time) within the period alert generation was executed
    Our questions:
    1) When and where tables VIRSA_CC_ALTCDLOG and VIRSA_CC_ACTUSAGE are used within SAP GRC AC?
    2) Since we are executing alert generation job on a daily basis, tables VIRSA_CC_ALTCDLOG and VIRSA_CC_ACTUSAGE are increasing very fast. Which is the best practice and procees to manage this information? Is deletion performed? Is archiving performed?
Many thanks in advance. Kind regards,
      Imanol

    Hello Imanol !
I've never heard of deleting Alerts per say, but you can delete the Action Usage that is used to generate the alerts. in RAR, go to: Configuration --> Ulitities --> Purge Action Usage.
I've never used the functionality yet, but my assumption is that deleting the action usage, would also impact the alerts and might possibly delete them too. There is some good information about positive/negative impact in the Configuation Guide "AC53_CG_Final_en_Aug_2010.pdf" on page 64.
Per your original question, if I understood correctly, the collected action usage is used a lot in AC. The following reports make use of Action Usage:
    1. RAR --> Informer --> Security Reports --> Miscellaneous --> Action Usage by Role & Profile
    2. RAR --> Informer --> Security Reports --> Miscellaneous --> Action Usage by User
    3. ERM --> Informer --> Transaction Usage
The third report is my favorite since it collects usage counts and which really helps for role re-enginneering.
The UAR and SOD Review processes make use of action usage too.

  • To remove a cube

    Hi guys,
The requirement is to analyze the removal of a cube (an overview cube),
can u guys tell me the precaution and steps to take like archival, performance if
any and the functions this is doin has to be replaced by detail cube.
    thanks,
your help will be greatly appreciated

    Vj,
Replacing a cube with another one needs to be analyzed right from source till reporting. If the reports on the existing cube can be transfered to the detail cube(copied). Again, check if you need the xisting cube data or not. If needed you can keep it as it is and link the detail cube inbetween. just go ahead with impact analysis.

  • Data Backup 2.1 and Mac Memory Management?

I'm trialing a backup program called Data Backup 2.1. It keeps versions of my programs, which I need, as often I've had corruptions and have not notice this till a few days after the fact. I've been using Retrospect but read a review that praised Data Backup. The thing I've noticed with it is that although it is very fast, like SuperDuper, it seems to affect my free memory dramatically. I've noticed that it will finish and instead of having say 250 megs of Active memory in use I'll have 700 megs of active memory. Inactive will be low whereas normally its high. Free memory during its backup can drop to 20 megs (I have 1.5 gigs). The free memory, once you start to use your computer seems to recover to around 500 - 700 megs. The one thing I have noticed of concern is that while its running I get pageouts, which I never get and my reading about Mac memory management is you want to avoid pageouts and if you get them you need more memory (for what I'm doing 1.5 gigs should be plenty). I've asked the Data Backup people what's going on and they don't think its something to be concerned about but they said it is probably something to do with the way they are caching.
I'm just wondering - do you think this is something to be concerned about. I'd like to switch from Retrospect as although I know it I'm not sure how committed they are to the Mac market any longer and it is way slower in terms of activities but it does manage memory well. However I don't want to get Data Backup if it is affecting RAM inappropriately.
    Kerry

Synchronize! Pro X will maintain versioned archives, perform full, incremental, and bootable backups both to local and to network devices. I have found that SPX is just about as full-featured as Retrospect with certain limitations. It cannot backup across multiple media (CDs, DVDs, tape), no extensive browser windows like Retrospect, no backups without scanning (as SuperDuper does for its "fast" updating backup.
SPX supports schedules, multiple-item backups (can select individual files and/or folders), extensive backup/synchronize customizations, can run as "root", can auto-mount devices (including network drives), and it's a universal binary.
It's also nearly as expensive as Retrospect but in my opinion it's worth it.
If you want a less costly backup solution without all the features of SPX, but with all the features of SuperDuper (and in my opinion better than SD) then try Deja Vu. Also a universal binary, it supports incremental archives, full, incremental, and bootable backups to local or network drives, supports scheduling and runs as a preference pane.
Finally, for the the truly cheap there are PsyncX and RsyncX - both freeware. They are GUI wrappers around the basic backup and synchronizing tools that are part of Unix (ditto, rsync, and psync.)
Download mentioned software from www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com.

  • Calculate CPU Usage

    hi.
On a multi-CPU system, I want to calculate the total percentage of CPU
usage at any moment. How should I do?
    thank you :)

    Hi,
You can get the CPU information from the OperatingSystemMXBean (or its extension from
    the com.sun.management package).
See in the comment section of this post for some additional info
    http://blogs.sun.com/jmxetc/entry/how_to_retrieve_remote_jvm
The target application is monitored through a JMXConnector/JMXConnectorServer pair.
If you use the out-of-the-box management agent, then the target application will start a
RMI connector - and you will see all the additional RMI threads.
If your target application uses another kind of connector servers, then you will see the
threads created by that connector server.

  • Performed an Archive and Install and now my Admin password doesn't work

I talked to CS this afternoon per an issue with iTunes and was instructed to perform an Archive and Install.
I just got done running both discs and the computer seems ready to go. When I click on my user name (I'm the admin) my password no longer works. We have two other users on the computer (neither have been set up with a password to access the accounts) but now the computer is asking for one.
    I'm typing my password correctly.
Does the computer reset to a generic password?
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    Thank you!

    Hi Kathleen,
Does the computer reset to a generic password?
No, it most likely means that there was a disk problem, you can generally prevent... well, let me give you my whole spiel since we're here...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
At this point it's not unlikely to undo the PW problem, but will prevent fiture problems.
If it still doesn't work, go back to Step 2 above & lok for Change Password in the Menu bar.
We have more if that still doesn't do it.

  • Performance of Archive Jobs Since Switching Partitions

    Hi,
Since MIMIX switching from one partition to another  , the run time for archive write jobs on EC_PCA_ITM archiving object has increased from 9 minutes to several hours and for delete jobs from less than an hour to up to 8 hours. This is for GLPCA file which has 7 indexes which I believe are maintained across the mirror by the journal delete entry to the target.
The partitions have the same amount of resource memory/CPU/disk following a switch. We have stopped SAP and deleted SQL packs as part of switch. The only action I performed was to switch off journaling on what was the target system and is now the primary system on file GLPCA to try to speed up the MIMIX apply backlog but I don't see this caused the problem ; 200million records were deleted during this time.  I have not performed any re-orgs on this file as yet  ( it will take 2 weeks and I was leaving it until all data deleted) but this should not be the difference ?
Any advice which may correct my understanding  or action to identify the problem would be appreciated.
    Regards
    David

    Hi David,
I am thinking from Archiving functionality that is causing this performance when MIMIX switching from one partition to another.
During writing of archive file by write program, it will call for functional module ARCHIVE_PUT_RECORD & ARCHIVE_SAVE_OBJECT, in this area I think system is taking long time because of switiching partition. you can debug.
Where are Delete program will first read archive file sequentially and then delete data from database... here also i feel that due to switching it might be taking more time.
Performance issue is only with EC_PCA_ITM or other archiving objects also?
    -Thanks,
