ARD 3.8.2 v1.1 crash Admin

I've (had) the newest client (ARD 3.8.2 v1.1) installed on two different machines this morning (both with ARD admin). One works fine, but the other one crashes at launch of the admin app. How can I revert back to (yesterday's) v1.0 of the client (which didn't crash on this machine)?

Yes, the Admin Console app crashes upon launch (on that machine). I've found the client piece (down in /Library/CoreServices...) and brought the older one back (via TimeMachine) and that seems to have done the trick for now. It'll be mid-late next week before I can do further trouble-shooting. Didn't try uninstalling.

  • Send a Unix command through ARD that will change a OS X admin user to a standard user.

I would love to send a Unix command through ARD that will change a OS X admin user to a standard user. The only thing I found close is
sudo dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership USERNAME
which does remove the user from the list of admins, but they are still listed as an admin in the user preference panel, and can still use their account to authenticate for admin privileges.

I'm not having any problems adding or removing users from the 'admin' group by using the syntax's
dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
    or
dscl . -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
What I'm saying is if a user is ticked as an Adminstrator in System Preferences and I run the
dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername syntax and remove them from the 'admin' GroupMembership they still have the Administrator box ticked in System Prefs and can administer the machine.
By the way the '/' doesn't work in the syntax in ARD.
    Thanks

  • ARD 3.7.2 sleep-related crash

Lately I've noticed that when I let my iMac/latest Mavericks Admin workstation sleep with ARD 3.7.2 running, upon waking I see ARD has crashed unexpectedly. This happens daily:
    Crashed Thread:  2
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: EXC_I386_GPFLT
    Ideas?

Ok, I solved it after doing some extensive Google searching.  Still not sure why ARD went bonkers, but here's my fix.
    1. Download the ARD 3.7.1 client drom the Apple downloads page and install it manually on the client machine.
    2.  Go back to the administrator machine and delete the computer client from the computers list.
    3.  From the scanners list, find the now visible client machine (it will probably say "no user name or password" next to it) and drag it to the computer list.
    4.  When you drag it over it will ask for the username and password.  Fill in an administrator user name and password for that computer, click OK and you're done.
Still a mystery as to why ARD software itself will not create new client packages.  I still haven't figured that part out.  Downloading the standard client package from Apple is the only work around I know of so far.  Good luck.

  • Weird: safari crashes admin acount not others after reinstall

    Hi,
got a problem. giving my old G4 400 to my brothe. rather than go through all of the files I just wiped the drive. Then reinstalled my version of 10.2. repaired disk permissions. updated per disks to 10.3. repaired disk permissions. web update to 10.3.9. repaired disk permissions.
Now Safari crashes when launched and affects other programms (they won't start) but safari will actually start 2nd time around.
then i created another user acount and that seems alright.
also disc permission repair claims to repair keeps correcting the same permissions every time it runs. also tried running disc utility from install disc. same.
reinstalled operating system (as described above)
    same.
    any suggestions?
the mac used to run 10.3.9 fine for a long time.

    Hawaiian_Starman,
I've been having the problem stated below (which I asked Amethyst18 in another topic "Re: Safari won't launch"):
Can you expand on the new user accounts? I'm having trouble with Safari (it launches but can't do anything else except for Quit). I tested Safari using a new user account, and it worked fine. So I expect by what you've said here, that I'm having some sort of trouble with my main user account?
I want to be careful not to create a more difficult situation as you've mentoned in your 3rd paragraph below (...which .plist files are causing my conflict).
Anyway, I've been searching for a solution, and the one you've mentioned below works fine! So it was my Safari Preferences file that was the issue.
If I copied my bookmarks files to the desktop, can they be reloaded into Safari so that I have the same UI of bookmarks and functionality (except for the Preferences, I realize) that I was using before I had this problem?
    thanks again,

  • ARD 3.2.2 Administrator crashes a lot!

When I select all 32 laptops to observe ARD becomes very slow and eventually crashes if I click on one client to control. This doesn't happen if I am observing six clients. I can manage the six fine with no crashes as soon as I select all 32 the problem begins. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I unstalled and installed a fresh copy with no results.

  • UNIX command required to elevate end user Admin privs on  mac

    Hi All,
I thought this would be easy but we've drawn a blank.
So much detail online and in the ARD manual seems to be about setting admin priveledges for end users of actual ARD.
What we would like to do is to make the user an administrator of their computer temporarily.
So rather than browse to their computer, take control, log them out, log in as administrator, go to accounts and then select eheir account and tick the "Allow user to admister this computer" box - I was looking for a UNIX command that coudl be sent.
    Any help greatfully recieved.
    thanks
    Gareth

I believe this will work, but test it on a testbed system first. Send the following UNIX command to the target computers:
dscl / -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
where "ARDusername" is the user you want to add to the admin group. To remove the user's admin rights, substitute -delete for -append.
Hope this does the job for you. If not, it should be close, so persual of the man page for dscl should help you to the correct syntax.
    Regards.

  • Can't figure out how to install ARD on Headless Xserve G5 running 10.4.4

Ok, I'm getting really frustrated not being able to figure this out. I have a new Xserve G5 running 10.4.4 I have no services currently rinning on it. I have all the sever administration apps installed (also 10.4.4) But my first order of business is to install some other software on the server.
I bought Apple Remote Desktop 2.2 Unlimited and installed the administer stuff on my powerbook.
But When i came to seting up the sever for ARD im baffled. Most documentation refers to setting up ARD on the server though the aever admin app. But I can't find any reference to ard in server admin.
    What am I missing ?
    Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   ARD 2.2

    One more thing...
You may have seen these already, but if not and you're interested in seeing some of the capabilities of ARD in action you might want to check these out:
    Apple Seminars Online

  • ARD automatic push and/or pull installs?

I understand ARD pushing installs to computers that are online for ARD access.
However what I am interested in is having the client ARD pulling the updates, or ARD pushing the updates when the machine becomes available.
In otherwords I want to update my user laptops automatically when ever they access the local network.
I know there are 3rd party apps and servers that do this but I believe they are all BIG $$$. Such as Filewave.
    Any guidance would be great.

Can you make the task start when the computer becomes available?
With ARD 3, yes, for software installation tasks. Talk a look at Page 108, Chapter 8, "Installing Software on Offline Computers" in the Admin Guide.. If you don't have ARD 3 yet, you can download the Admin Guide here (clicking the link will download a PDF).

  • Client logging of admin access

Is there any way for a client to check if an ARD admin has connected?
It seems not at the applcation layer, but there must be something, somewhere that can be activated on the client?
    b.

i've never seen anything from ARD in system.log.
    have you seen it yourself?
    b.
I think what hes talking about is ARD version 3's ability for the admin to create logs based on clients activity on systems.
Im also looking for a way to see when a admin has connected to a system, in this particular case a tech administrator logged into an end system and deleted files after he was let go, we only have access to the end system and are looking for logs to prove what user connected and the times..
I have been unable to find anything conclusive.
    anyone???
    Thanks

  • Manage ARD with Profile Manager

We have a lot of "out of the box" macs in our environment we want to tame so are setting up OD and Profile Manager.  Since they are out of the box, SSH and ARD are all disabled.  After we get the Macs connected to OD, can we use Profile Manager to enable ARD on the clients allowing our local admin account only to access them with all the check boxes checked?  Is it that granular?

That is a good question and as far as I know, the overt answer is no.  While Apple has a custom setting option in Profile Manager for OS X (http://help.apple.com/profilemanager/mac/10.7/#apd9ABBDBE7-E899-4EF8-A087-CC771A E6729A), this setting is controlled by the defaults command and anything you can control with it.  The issue with ARD is that it is still controlled by the archaic kickstart command.  And this does not lend itself the the limited structure of profile manager.
Now, one possible way to achieve this without something like JAMF is to create a payload-less installer that contains just a post install script.  The script would contain the kickstart command with all your required settings.  This would allow you to enable ARD after the fact.
Now, if you are binding the machines to OD, perhaps you combine the binding script with the enable ARD kickstart command.  Afterall, the assumption is that you are touching these devices at some point.
I have not tried this and perhaps others in the community can provide additional insight.

Solution: If the device in question is marked marked as local_only and is being used as the boot device or the mirror of a boot device for a node, then that node may be unable to access this device and hence, unable to boot. Contact your authorized Sun service provider to determine whether a workaround or patch is available.
Any idea what's going on or how to prevent it?

I have isolated the issue to ssh and the login window. I can use these same administrator credentials to initiate ARD sessions, configure the server via Server admin or WGM, authenticate to perform privileged finder operations.
    restarts do not change anything.
per a related post, but not identical investigated /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/config/ I only had one of the referenced files, not the several hundred those posters seemed to have. I made a backup, and removed it, followed by a restart. There was no effect.
I opened Server Admin, and turned off ssh, verified that remote login was not checked in System Preferences. Logged out, no effect, restarted again no effect.
There is no joy with trying Local Administrator.
This is a clean 10.5.4 Install (Monday, August 3) DNS works per Anthony Rocco's setup instructions and verification methods. DNS was working prior to upgrading to OD Master. Kerberos logins worked properly. I was going through and setting up share points and setting ACLs when I realized I lost access.
I would take any suggestions people might have...
    thanks,

  • Can my MacPro running OS X Server 10.4.8 be headless?

    Hi, all.
I'm running OS X Server 10.4.8 Server on my Intel MacPro. Can I run it "headless" and still have all services startup? It seems that if I boot it up and don't login, then the services don't start. (Or maybe they are started and I'm just not giving it enough time). Anyway, since I'm going to be using this as my business server, I'd like to put it in the corner and not have a monitor, KB, mouse, etc. attached.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance...

That's what all of us with Xserves do. Get a copy of ARD (Apple Remote Desktop) to do remote admin. The ARD client comes with Mac OS X (server and non-server), so it will already be on your MacPro. Some people use a VNC program such as Chicken of the VNC, but the features of ARD are well worth its price. Very nice.
Server Admin, Server Monitor, and OS X Server Install all can be done headless. Only those few programs that do not have client/server type operation will require that you ARD over to the server to admin.
    Good luck.

  • Missing "sharing" option in system preferences after installing apple remote desktop client version 2.10

    Hi All,
I installed a wrong version of Apple remote desktop client , 2.10 and the sharing menu under system preferences vanished. I tried to uninstall the Apple remote desktop with,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2577
but no luck, but after restarting the macbook pro with lion 10.7.2, i see my sharing option enabled but when clicked, it says the system preference has to restart and confirming that it restarts in 32 bit mode and even after clciking the sharing option it says, "you can't open sharing preferences because it doesn't work on an intel-based mac"
. So i strongly believe the apple remote desktop is creating the issue.
Can someone help how to fix this please?
    Thanks

I can ping the IP, I can SSH into the MacBook, the ARD and Remote Login services are checked ON, the firewall is OFF. • Apple Remote Desktop won't connect to 2 computers

I have a class- 30 computers- I have 2 computers that will not allow me to connect via Apple Remote. I have tried everything that I know of to try to connect to these two computers. My school district will not allow me to get into the File Sharing folder of the System Preferences, so I have to try a different way.
I have scanned, deleted IP address, added by IP address.... tried everything I know how to do... dynamite is now being loaded in my car to bring up here. -joke...
The current status said "Access denied" for the longest time on my monitoring screen. I deleted Remote application on these computers and re-installed it. At least now... it says "ARD NOT ACTIVE"...so I think I might be getting somewhere.
Two other quick things... the other 28 computers in my classroom show the Mac OS version 10.4.8(8L2127) and the machine model on my monitoring screen, while my non-functioning computers do not display this information. I tried Bonjour, IP address, and network address and so on.
If there is anyway to get around this other than File Sharing... please help.
For some reason, all the other computers have always worked, but these two have a poltergeist or something.
