ARD remote software update download source?

When we use Apple Remote Desktop to get the client to download software updates, like with this UNIX command
softwareupdate -i -r
What download source does the remote client use?  does he download via his own gateway direct from Apple,  or does the ARD host computer download it then upload to the client.
If all machines were on your LAN,  you would want the updates to be downloaded once by the host,  but if all the clients were Remote you would want them to download with their own connections.
I have a lot of clients on both,  so need to figure out which one it is :-)

Unless you change the setup of the clients to point to an update server in Mac OS X Server on your system, then they alll contact Apple directly and download individually from there. ARD does not host updates.
If you want to have a single download for some or all of your systems, either download the installers on your admin system - most are available as a standalone installer package - and push out the package through ARD, or set up a Mac OS X server, set up the Software Update Server feature, and point all your workstations to that server for their updates.
Regards.

  • When does Software Update download in the background?

I work at a school with about 150 Macs. About 50 of them are new imacs with Leopard installed. The default setting is to have software updates download in the background. We have turned that off as 50 machines downloading a 100 meg file at the same time could cause some traffic jams, correct? We download the updates once and install using ARD. My question is, if we forget to turn one off, when does it download? As soon as it is connected to the internet? We have our computers turning on in the morning at 8 and shutting of at 6 pm. When would the software update automatically download in the background? Thanks in advance.

I have always noticed that when I boot my machine, software update checks and if anything is available it will download. I have it set to check daily, and I shut my machine down nightly.
Also it tells you the last time it checked in the preferences.
    Software Update > Preferences
That should tell you your answer for sure.

  • Remote Software Update

    Hi
I'm having trouble getting ARD to do remote software updates. By default, my users are all Standard, and I set auto updates off on each client. I can interrogate each client by sending a UNIX command (as the ARD user):
    softwareupdate -l -a
and this returns the expected list(s).
When I try to install the updates (as the ARD user, or as the client admin user) with:
    softwareupdate -i -a
I receive the message 'softwareupdate: Must be run as root'
I can't use sudo, as it asks for the pwd and stops execution. I don't want to enable root on the clients - is there a way to get this working?
    cheers
    ---john---

Do you know if the commands:
    SoftwareUpdate -l -a
    SoftwareUpdate -i -a
Are Workstation OS version dependent, as we have a Lab that has a number of Jaguar (10.2.8) machines w/ARD 2.2 that protest when this command is issued against them as root...
    result is:
SoftwareUpdate -l: No such Update name
SoftwareUpdate -a: No such Update name
    Software Update Tool
    Copyright 2002 Apple Computer, Inc.
Any pointers on this would be greatly appreciated or am I missing something (ie; one needs to have an internal update server service running on OS X Server in house...) / is there a FAQ or Man page that is available for the SoftwareUpdate UNIX command?
    Thanks in Advance

You may need to try this More than Once...
Be sure to Follow ALL the Steps..
But... if the Device has been Modified... this will Not necessarily work.

    Hi,
Are you connected to a Wi-Fi network? If not this may be the reason why.

  • Software Update Downloads to Deployment Package Extreamly Slow

Trying to troubleshoot or identify why software updates are downloading so slowly when creating a new deployment package.
I'm thinking this may have to do with the preferred distribution point and prestaged distribution point settings.
We have one Boundary Group for entire site and one distribution point group for the same.
    Neither is configured for pre-staged.
It was my understanding that any distribution point in the primary site is already a "preferred distribution point".
Also, prestaged distribution point settings options are not really clear.  If neither DP is configured to prestage, which option should be used for distribution settings?  Manually Copy content is default, assuming that this might be the issue?
In that by Automatically downloading content when assigned to distribution points is adding that into the process of downloading to the distribution package... where it isn't just downloading to package at source location, but instantly copying to both DPs
in the DP group?  This would explain the lag in the process i'm guessing since the "manual copy the content in the package to the distribution point" option would allow the download to the deployment package first, then the second step of sending
to the DP could happen after the fact?
    Deployment package Settings:
    Distribution Settings
    Distribution Priority: Medium
Checked: Distribute the content for this package to preferred distribution points
    Prestaged distribution point settings
Automatically download conetn when packages are assigned to distribution points

  • Remote Software Updates and Sending Task Status to User

I am updating user's machines using ARD 3 with the unix command 'softwareupdate -i -a'. With some updates, a restart is required and ARD posts this within the task status column.
I was wondering if there was a way to grab that task status of "restart needed" or "succeeded" and then send that to the user when the software update has completed.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

System restart checkbox is used to control what happens outside of MW.
If you have no MW and did not select to restart outside of MW then systems will reboot after installation completes (unless user overrides it and does it sooner). Keep in mind that the 90 minute and 15 minute restart countdowns will be displayed if user is
logged in (unless you have changed the times) if user did not interact with any notifications to select other options like install and reboot ahead of time.
If you have MW and did not select to restart outside of MW, then PC will not reboot until MW starts (unless user overrides it, of course).
If you select to reboot outside of MW checkbox then PC will reboot after installation ends, no matter if MW is set or not.

So restore the phone.  I'm not sure I'm understanding what the issue is.

  • Software updates download is very  slow

Today I downloaded 2 software updates; OSX 10.9.5 and Safari 7.1.  The download speed was very slow and erratic.  The activity monitor showed that the process "softwareipdated" was receiving data at anywhere from 1 to 25 kbs.  My DSL connection is never very fast but typically receives 130 to 150 kbs.  Other downloading such as streaming music or video has been normal.  Any ideas why this happened and could this be a symptom of some more fundamental problem?

It may not be exclusive to Verizon but considering that Apple updates are severely affected on my system, yet my next door neighbor with Comcast has no problems whatsoever, I am 100% confident that Verizon is playing a role in my woes.  In fact, I updated my wife's iPad to iOS 8 OTA on a relative's Xfinity wifi just to get it completed.  Took me about an hour to complete.  I came back home, less than a quarter mile away to my lovely FiOS and boom, 15-20 hour download estimate on my rMBP to update my iPad Mini (which I'm saving for last or at least until this issue is resolved).  Changing my DNS seemed to work briefly on my rMBP but less than a day later my speeds were back to being slow as molasses. At least I had the opportunity to update both my rMBP and iPad Air before the speed took a nosedive again.  Just wish I had updated the Mini too.  I figured the problem was resolved and I'd get a chance to update it later.
Judging by several posts I found online (links to two examples posted below), I see I'm not alone in thinking something funny is going on between Apple and Verizon.  I won't refute your claim that it is also affecting other providers, because your experience sounds pretty close to mine, but everyone I've encountered with problems in this area has FiOS. Folks around me who subscribe to other ISP's seem fine.  The link below to the discussion on dslreports (2nd link) is particularly telling because I read it after trying various troubleshooting steps and was surprised by the number of people who posted in that thread that had identical issues and troubleshooting experiences as me.  Several people also mentioned that the problem disappeared after they connected to Apple update through a VPN.
I assumed it was primarily on the East Coast because I have relatives in the West and Midwest with FiOS who have not had any issues.
I called Verizon but that was about as useful as your experience.  They didn't even bother pointing fingers.  They simply said "if everything else works then I'm getting what I pay for".  I promptly replied that as an almost exclusively Apple household, I am most certainly not getting what I pay for if I can't upgrade my software, apply security patches or use my Apple streaming devices.  Unfortunately, no one seems interested in fixing the issue, so we're left to find our own solutions.
And that's exactly what I did roughly an hour ago.  Comcast will be out to swap my equipment and service in 14 days.  Problem solved... At least I hope.

  • Software updates downloads timing out

I have a 17 in. MPB bought in August 2007 and Im having a problem downloading certain firmware and software updates. they time out...Do I need a faster network? or is there a setting that I can expand my download times? Im thinking about going to at least an N network anyway I have a G right now, will that help?
    Message was edited by: golfermac

The speed of your Wi-Fi network isn't the problem - even 802.11b wireless is faster than most home internet connections, and even the fastest home internet (with premium pricing from the ISP to match) is slower than 802.11g. The only advantages with N wireless are for local file transfers (e.g. Time Machine backups) and increased range.
The problem may still be with your ISP/internet connection (just not the one between your computer and your router). Have you tried doing the download(s) elsewhere? Have you tried applying only one update at a time?

  • Can't Restart Computer After Software Update Download.

I have a PowerBook G4 which I had upgraded back in December to Leopard. After downloading software updates a couple of days ago, I tried to restart my computer and all I got was the Apple logo and the spinning gear. I brought my computer into the local Apple Store and the tech tried to archive and install from an external drive and the computer said there wasn't enough memory to install Leopard though the tech said I had enough RAM installed but that the computer wasn't reading the memory available correctly and that I needed a new memory board at a cost of $350.
I had a similar thing happen in December 2007 after I downloaded software updates. I brought my computer into the Apple Store. It seemed there was a "kernal panic." Everytime the tech deleted something it kept coming back "to life" and taking up too much "space" though this was different than not having enough RAM (I'm not terrifically computer saavy). I left the computer there for them to look at and a few days later due to whatever they did it was working again.
When dealing with the current problem a few days ago the tech said it was purely coincidental that the computer stopped working immediately after I downloaded software updates on two different occasions, but I found that very difficult to believe. I put in the installation disc that came with the computer and was able to get through the first steps of installing Tiger without actually beginning to install it, and I saw that the hard drive only had 49mb free and the tech said I needed 51mb to install Leopard. I called an Apple Care tech on the phone and asked if I could reinstall Tiger so that I could at least access the internet and retrieve my emails until I could get the Leopard issue resolved. He said doing so would delete Leopard and all of the documents I had done on it.
I mentioned I used to have my computer set up so I could access both OS9 and OSX on my computer and asked if that was now possible with Tiger and Leopard. He said I would need to go into the Apple Store and have them hook up my computer via firewire to another computer and boot up in target mode so that I could possibly delete some of the files taking up the memory and have enough room to install Leopard, or failing that could at least partition the hard drive and install Tiger until I could get the Leopard issue resolved.
I tried the safe boot someone suggested in a previous thread on this topic, but the computer would not boot up. Does anyone have any other ideas to solve this problem without taking the computer into the Apple Store? And how can I prevent this from happening during software updates in the future? I did not have the option with this last software update to choose only one download at a time. Software Update just started downloading what seemed to be one large update.
Thanks in advance for any help or illumination anyone can provide.

    Kristin,
I'm having similar problem after upgrade on my imac. Hangs with white screen after logging out. Have to press/hold pwr button to shut off, then press to turn on.
I have a LaCie porsche ext hard drive attached by usb. Should I unplug this and try reinstalling mavericks? I didn't remove ext hd during the upgrade, was I supposed too?
    Thanks,
    chris

  • Software Update download freezes every time...

Just bought my first iMac (intel i5) and it won't complete the Software Update of Mac OS X (2.06GB). After multiple failed attempts of downloading over WIFI, I've plugged in via ethernet. Download freezes every time.  Why?

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Any change?

  • Apple Software Update download is SLOW...

Hi everyone, I've been experiencing VERY slow download speeds from Apple's Software Update throughout the weekend. I'm on a DSL line, no firewalls, and am getting normal performance at other sites/servers, but downloads from Apple are coming in at sub-dialup speeds.
The downloads start fine, then quickly taper off from 120 Kbps or so down to 5-6 Kbps, within just a few seconds. The problem occurs whether I use Software Update or try to access a file directly from Apple's Support Downloads page. iTunes app updates seem to have the same issue.
Any suggestions would be most welcome!

I'm not quite sure exactly what fixed the issue, but I did a complete reset and reconfig on my Linksys router and set up the connection to my ISP/DSL provider, and it seems to have improved. Never did track down the specific issue, though. I'd be curious if anyone is able to identify the cause.
When I was troubleshooting, I switched to a direct DSL connection via my Ethernet port, and got full speed downloads from Apple, so the wireless connection was definitely the issue for me....
    Good luck all!

  • Is Software Update downloading in the background when tethered to an iPhone?

Often I use my laptop tethered to an iPhone 4 and surf the internet through personal hotspot. How can I be sure that Software Update is not downloading huge updates using iPhone's 3G expensive data plan? And if it does, can I prevent it?
    Thanks!

Go to System Preferences (under the apple) and Software Update is about the middle of the "Systems" line.  On the bottom of the Pref panel for SW Update there are check boxes for checking automatically and downloading automatically.  If you spend any significant amount of time attached via an expensive or slow connection, turn them both off.
I would turn off "download automatically" under any circumstances -- when you are trying to do something and it runs really slowly, it's pretty frustrating to realize that it's because your computer was downloading 500MB of printer driver updates for a printer that broke and you threw in the trash two years ago!
