Are weak references cleared with soft ones?

Suppose a program holds both weak and soft references to an object X. Suppose the virtual machine clears all the soft references at once, making X weakly reachable. Is the virtual machine guaranteed to clear all the weak references next before normal execution resumes?
I ask because I am setting up an automatic interning system for immutable objects of a certain class that will guarantee that at most one object of a given value is reachable by the rest of the program at one time but will allow objects to be garbage collected if necessary. I need to decide what reference object(s) to keep to each interned object. If I keep only a weak reference, objects will be discarded at the whim of the virtual machine; I would prefer to keep them around longer so they don't have to be recreated so many times. If I keep only a soft reference, I am concerned that another part of the program might keep a weak reference. If the answer to my question above is "no", the soft reference could be cleared and the interning system could create a second object with the same value while the first is still accessible via the weak reference. It seems safest to keep both a soft reference and a weak reference and only recreate the object if the weak reference has been cleared.

Softs hang around until memory needs dictate theygo.
In my experience (Apple's 1.4 VM) this appears to be
as soon as GC is run, making them effectively
useless. Maybe VMs have improved. Not in my experience (Sun 1.4 VM). Soft references hang around forever. I had to stuff my class with bloat to make the instance larger, then change the VM heap size to get it to start collecting my soft references. Whereas the weak references are dumped ASAP. Inside scoop has it that finalizers will delay object collection a bit so be careful of that.
Also the only guarantee is that soft is cleared before weak when they refer to the same object. in my experience weak references go quickly. Like at the first GC when they are weak. You can not depend on any timing with respect to when the weak will be cleared. I don't think the spec even guarantees that soft will be enqueued before weak. Im not sure on that point.

Your iPhone's iOS must be same or newer than the one in backups. In your case it is older so you need to update your iPhone and then recover it with backup.

  • There are two iPhones associated with my one Apple ID. Will I be able to "find my other phone?"

i have two iphones on my Apple iTunes account. I would like to use the App "Find My Friends" to locate each phone but it seems it works only from the Apple ID not the phone number.
In order to enjoy many of the features sometimes it seems Apple wants everyone to have their own account. Pay for their applications twice. etc. I think this is terrible.
Does anyone know how I can set up my iphones so I can use Find My Friend?
    Thanks

Same issue...I think I found it though, but have not tested with my other devices yet.  You do it with email addresses though, not phone numbers.  You can associate additional email addresses with your primary apple id.  For example, my email address is the primary apple id, but my wife and kids all have email addresses associated with this account.  That is how we can FaceTime and iMessage each other.  In the Find Friends app, touch "Me" at the bottom, then "Account" at the top.  Once you are signed in with your primary apple id, you can select one of the other email addresses associated with your account by touching "Send As."    Again, I won't be able to test it until I get home, but that is how it should work.

  • HT4865 If you are sharing  an iCloud with some one. Can they  see what you are texting  to other peoe

I have a question about icloud

No, that happens when you are both using the same Apple ID for iMessage (which is separate from iCloud).  If you are, then one of you needs to go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with a different ID.  You can continue to share the same ID for iCloud.

  • Still on the fence about the Nano?  Are you all happy with yours?

    Hi,
Is there a certain week number I should look for when buying the Nano like week 38 (that was mentioned for the Touch model before). I know some have had problems with a slanted screen as well.
How about the sounds is it pretty good? I saw one in the store yesterday but they didn't have earbuds out for it. I'm still between this and the Classic but obviously want good performance so will sacrifice space for that in the end. Are there still bugs with this one?
    S.

I'm pretty happy with my 3G Nano so far. I got it about a week ago shipped from China (got it engraved from Apple). But my prior iPod was an original 1G 5GB iPod. So it's about 1/6th the size and has over 50% more capacity than what I'm used to. Battery life is a lot longer as well. The things I was looking forward to was the ability to view video and photos on a TV. So I'm most disappointed that Apple has locked the video out functionality. Only one reason makes sense for why they did that, and that is to stick it to their licensees so Apple can charge higher licensing fees for 3rd party iPod video devices. That decision can only frustrate and annoy iPod owners--expecially since even Apple isn't yet selling their own video-enabled cables yet (you can't find them in Apple retail stores and they're backordered for weeks on the Apple store.com).
My screen is mounted straight (In fact I haven't personally seen any crooked ones), and I've started subscribing to video podcasts and have been very impressed with the viewing quality on the 2" display. It's not that much smaller than the Classic, and though I would have loved the larger iPod Touch display, I just couldn't justify double the price.
The included games are okay. I probably wouldn't buy any new ones since the Nano is so small and the touchwheel is so low on the iPod that it cramps my hand to use it for extended time needed for a game, but that's just me.
I've heard the coverflow has issues on the Nano. But so far, I haven't encountered either the problem with coverflow lag or cover jumbling. As far as I can tell, since I've populated all the relevent track tages in iTunes they seem to group as expected for all my music.
Probably the second thing I'd criticize the Nano on would be the storage capacity. I was hoping for 10-16GB when Steve announced them. 8GB is a bit cramped for anyone who seriously wants to utilize it for music, photos and videos in my opinion. But I think I'll give iTunes synchronization a try and see how it goes (I've always managed my prior iPod manually) as far as maintaining a fresh source of podcasts to keep me interested.
Overall. The sound quality seems great. I'm not hyper-sensitive, so I don't hear any extra hiss in the audio at all. Though I've read that there are some audio-dropout problems once you start sync'ing photos onto the Nano (but I haven't gotten around to installing photos yet)
I'm sure there will be more software updates for the Nano in the future, I wish Apple provided some way to customize the view when an audio track is playing. I'd much rather have more song info displayed along with a head-on square view of the cover art, but I'd be surprised if any significant interface changes like that are ever introduced.
I must say, the Nano looked a bit odd when I first saw it online, but in person, it's really the nicest tiny iPod ever in my opinion.

  • Clearing weak references with inner classes

I have a class which contains several inner classes. During it's lifetime, this object creates several instances of it's internal objects and uses them only internally.
I also have a single weak reference that links to my object from anywhere external to the program.
While profiling, I discovered a memory leak. After examining the core dump under jhat, it appears that the only objects linking to this object are that weak reference from the external program and several intantiated inner classes that reference my object via their implicit this$0 field.
Is this possible? Does mixing inner classes and weak references stop the garbage collector from reclaiming classes?

Based on the information you provide, I question your assertion that these inner objects are used only internally. The most obvious explanation is that you're leaking them and something else is holding a hard reference to them.

  • Soft/Weak References: rule of thumbs?

After reading <a target="extern" href="http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/ALT/RefObj/index.html">Reference Objects and Garbage Collection</a> i browsed my code and replaced my listener containers with versions that store WeakReference objects. The main idea is to avoid memory leaks by storing references to objects that are not needed anymore (the listener container is the only strong reference left).
Another rule is to use SoftReferences for caches. But I haven't figured out a good way of implementing it (for caches that fill itself with one single SQL statement).
Are there any other examples where it's good advice to use Soft/Weak References?

For listeners, you have to make sure that the listener object is hard referenced - which is usually the case. After you release the listener object from the main application/object/thread, because it's finished or you don't need it anymore, the listener holder should not hold on to such references to avoid OutOfMemoryExceptions. Of course, the best way is always to unregister a listener, but unfortunately, we're not living in a perfect world. No listener is forced to unregister, they can simple forget to unregister. For this reason, it's better to tell the listener: if you register yourself, you should know that you are just referenced via WeakReferences. If the listener suddenly doesn't get listener events, this is a coding error which can be traced and fixed. But if a listener forgets to unregister itself, the resulting memory bloat is much harder to trace.
SQL table caches are difficult. On one hand you want to cache the data, on the other, you want to free this cache memory (temporarily) for more important memory usage. It's always a trade off between 2 advantages. If performance is not the big issue, but you get OutOfMemoryExceptions, then this is critical for the application to continue working. Better a little slower than not at all ... ;-)

Help needed I updated my ipad2 with iOS5 but few of my dashbaords (HTML5) are not working now ,can any one let me know how to downgrade the OS as we have a meeting coming up .. its urgent

Downgrading the iOS is not supported. If you are using Safari this try clearing its cache via Settings > Safari.
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

If you selected open a new Apple ID account, go back a step and enter use existing Apple ID.
You will have to set up a separate iCloud account or your iPads will mirror each other.

    Hi,
We have S/p 2010 and S/P 2013 running in our company. we also have some computers with office 2010 and others with office 2013.
since a few days ago, the desktop one note apps are failing to open one note documents stored on S/P 2013. they can still access/sync oneNote docs on S/P 2010.
I can not trace back the problem to anything. and it happens to all stations having onenote 2010. the users running onenote 2013 are having no trouble with either S/P
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
