Array(n elements) to string conversion

i got some questions about data conversion:
i have an array with n elements, witch i need to extract and convert to string in order to send data over udp vi. the problem is
that the vi is getting pretty big and i'm starting to wonder about memory&cpu usage. So can anyone check
this vi out and see if there is place for improvements.

I've done some more changes and hidden most of the code in a sub-vi. I've also shown how to make the code scalable, in case you suddenly need to accomodate 7 or 10 inputs.
In the new VI's, I've shown 2 different approaches to your code, but both are functionally equivalent.
As far as performance, you can always gain a little boost by going to File --> VI Properties --> "Execution" and deselect "Allow Debuging".
There might be other ways to optimize your code, but the thing you need to ask yourself is if this is really necessary.
If you go to File --> VI Properties --> Memory
you will see some "stats" for your current VI.
The one you posted originally, has a memory footprint of ~117.5k... as for cpu-usage, unless you are working with a significantly bigger project, you do not need to worry about performance at all, unless you are on a very very old computer.
That said, optimizing code is always important, and it is a very good way to learn, but sometimes one must be able to see when "enough is enough" and something is "good enough".
For comparision, the new VI I made for you, which includes 2 examples/different ways of doing it, takes only ~56.7k... though I'm not sure if you need to add the sub_vi to this or if it is already added.. the sub-vi is ~23.7k total..
Hope this helps you, and if someone else can take a look to see if there is any other obvious ways to optimize the code, then both me and the thread-owner will learn something more here.

  • XML Element to string conversion returning null

    Hi,
    When i try to convert XML Element to string using toString() API, it returns something like [device: null] where device is element tag.
    Code is as follows -
    Document xmlDoc;
    DOMParser parser = (DOMParser)Class.forName("org.apache.xerces.parsers.DOMParser").newInstance();
    parser.setFeature( "http://apache.org/xml/features/dom/defer-node-expansion", true );
    parser.parse(new InputSource(new StringReader(tableStr)));
    xmlDoc = parser.getDocument();
    Element root = xmlDoc.getDocumentElement();
    NodeList nodeList = root.getElementsByTagName("device");
    Element deviceNode = (Element)nodeList.item(nodeList.getLength()-1);
    System.out.println(deviceNode.toString()); //prints [device: null] ????
    System.out.println(deviceNode.getAttribute("ipAddress")); //prints correct ip address
    Any idea why i am getting [device: null] when trying to convert Element to String though attribute value is retrieved.
    Thanks,
    Deepak

  • \0D and \0A after array to spreadsheet string conversion

    Hi guys, i currently have a VI that manipulates a couple of arrays and writes them to a config file through the config VI.
    Now, i notice 1 problem whereby after my array is comma delimited and converted into a spreadsheet string, a tab and carriage return automatically appears at the end of the string. This causes my resulting config file to have \0D and \0A to appear with my keys in the config file.
    I know it's got to be the array to spreadsheet string conversion that's causing the problem because i don't have such \0D and \0A problem with keys without the conversion.
    How do i solve this?

    The OD and OA are the carriage return and line feed and yes the functona always appends these characters at the end of each line. Probably because this function is normally used to create files that a spreadsheet can read. There are several ways to remove the extra characters. Shown below is the string reversed and the String Subset function uses an offset of two. The output of that is reversed to get a string without the CR and LF. Also shown is getting the string length, subtracting 2 and wiring that to the length input of the String Subset function.

  • String Conversion

    In Word if I run "StrConv(FeeMemo.Addr.Text, 3)" on a test of "this is a test of string conversion" this function will convert this text to "This Is A Test Of String Conversion".
    I wonder if such functionality exist on JaveScript for PDF? and if there is where would you put it?
    Thanks in advance for your help...
    Regards
    Jeff

    You can write a JavaScript function and place it in the document level JavaScript or as a folder level script.
    You will have to split the text sting by the space character and then go through each element of the array and then force the first character of each element to an upper case value. You can then reassemble the elements with the spaces between them.

  • Last element in string

    Hello all
    I am having a string like this:
    55.000000; 10.000000; 0.100000; 1.000000; 1.000000; 0.100000; 0.000000; 0.000000; 1.000000; 1.000000; 22.000000; 0.100000; 6144.000000;
    The length of the string is not always same. What i want is to have the last element. i.e in this case  6144
    One way is to get the string length and using string subset to get the last element. But for this, the length must be always constant.
    Is there any other way to get the last element independant of the string length
    thanks

    Since you have the extra semicolon at the end, I actually grabbed the second-to-last element of the array after the spreadsheet string to array.

  • How to insert 2-D array of elements in excel sheet

    I have a 2-D array of elements. I want to insert this array into an excel sheet and display the data in a graph. I used the example "excel insert table" but the problem with that VI is, it is inserting the elements cell by cell which is taking long time. I am wondering whether there is way to insert a complete column or row into excel sheet at a time.
    Thank you,
    Mudda.

    Hi,
    Try this vi which inserts the table in one operation. You can modify it to suit your purposes.
    Hope this helps.
    Edit: Should note that it works for both string and numeric array inputs.Message Edited by DavidT on 06-29-2005 10:09 AM

  • Labview 7 index waveform array by channel name string

    I was messing around with the index array waveform function with a waveform array(3 elements). I had used the set waveform attribute vi with the name input set to "Channel Name." The index waveform array function would not return any data when I was passing a particular channel name to it. Inside the vi I noticed that the name input has to have the format "NI_ChannelName" to match the string constant. Is this explained in the documentation anywhere?? Wouldn't it be more useful to make this string constant a string control input that we wired data into?? Then we could index the waveform array based on any name input that we set with the waveform attribute function.

    Hi 08,
    despite reanimating an 11 year old thread that information you requested is given in the "Set Waveform Attribute Function" help as written by Brandon…

  • Array access notation with strings?

    I may be confused, but I thought you could use array access
    notation with strings. Can someone tell me why this code doesn't
    work (or suggest new code):
    the code is meant to rewrite the block of text in tText at a
    rate of one character per frame... (when the function is called
    once per frame) but it doesn't work.

    DZ-015,
    > I may be confused, but I thought you could use
    > array access notation with strings.
    It's made for objects, actually. The array access operator,
    [], allows
    you to access elements from an Array instance and also lets
    you access
    properties from any sort of object. The "trick" it provides,
    in this latter
    case, is that you can refer to these properties -- within the
    brackets --
    with strings, so it's often used to reference objects
    dynamically.
    > var sWorkingText:String = tText.text;
    Here you've declared a String variable and set it to the
    TextField.text
    property of some textfield. So far, so good.
    > var sNewText:String = oPhotoText[sPageFocus];
    Here, you've declared a String variable, but it seems that
    you're
    setting it to a property of the oPhotoText object. That's now
    how this
    works.
    The array access operator allows you to *use* strings to get
    at an
    object's properties:
    // functionally equivalent
    someObject.property1
    someObject["property" + 1];
    var x:Number = 1;
    someObject["property" + x];
    Does that help?

  • Array of cluster to array of element - or - Cluster of arrays?

    Hi all,
    I have a large cluster (lets call it C_data) containing measured data e.g. 10 Temperatures, Pressure, (Temp_1, ...).....
    All these data are measured once per second. I now collect all data
    measured over a certain time in an array of the aforementioned cluster,
    that is
    an array of C_data. In order to display time series of data in graphs I
    need to extract arrays of elements from this array of C_data.
    In a text based programming language this could look like the following:
    Struct C_data {Temp_1, Temp_2, P_1.....}
    ar_C_data is an array of C_data
    now I want to do something like:
    array_of_Temp_1 = ar_C_data[*].Temp_1
    In some programming languages this works but I cannot unbundle_by_name the array of Temp_1 from ar_data in Labview.
    Since my cluster is large and may change in structure (for this reason I use a typedef) a generic solution would be the best.
    I know that I could: loop over all elements of ar_C_data, unbundle by
    name, index elements into arrays, and use these but this seems very
    inefficient if it is done every second on a large cluster (30 elements) with several thousand array elements....
    Olaf

    You can minimize the overhead of scanning through all elements and extracting if you pre-define the array and use "replace array subset".  This avoide having to re-size the array which is costly.
    Or you can keep an array separately in memory.  When one cluster element is added, the corresponding element is added to the array too.  Causes some memory overhead, but you're going to have that anyway if you generate them "on the fly".
    I don't see a way to do this other than either search through the array and pick the elements you need -or-
    keep a copy of the data in a form you can use.
    It's a common question of how to structure data to best suit two sometimes conflicting needs - efficiency and useability.
    What might be of interest is to change the "Array" - "Cluster" order and have a single cluster C-Data with arrays of each element required.  Might be a bit more difficult to use, it depends on your application.
    This way you have all arrays ready at all times, but generating a single cluster requires bundling the individual units on the fly.
    Shane.

    You certainly won't be able to use Arrray to Cluster without providing a cluster size to the primitive; this needs to be known at design-time.  Answer pincpanter and someone can suggest an alternative.
    <mta> You posted as I was writing mine.  What do you mean by "bind (as appropriate) to a case structure"?  It sounds like you want to have the array elements become individual cases in the Case structure.  Is that correct?  That's another design-time decision.

  • Covert DOM element to String

    It sounds very simple, however could not find any solution using JAXP.
    What I need is that I have a DOM element, I want to convert the DOM element into String and store into the database. I used to do it using JDOM. It has a feature something like toString.
    I know that serialization is another option, however, want to know how to do this way.

    xmlString.getBytes()No, that causes your problem. Read the documentation to see what the getBytes() method does. Here's what you should do instead:Document document = documentBuilder.parse(new InputSource(new StringReader(xmlString)));This doesn't convert from String to bytes using a bad encoding. But you also say:
    xmlString contains Japanese characters and was originally from a xml file with UTF-8 encoing.In this case there's a good chance that in reading from the file to the String you have also failed to use UTF-8 to do the decoding. Why not just pass a File object to the parser and let it deal with the encoding issues? It knows what to do.

  • Dom element to string

    I have a method, the argument being passed in is a dom element.
    The method will convert the element(and child node) to string. The string is then passed into a buffer writer to write to a file.
    What is the easiest/fastest way to convert the dom element to string?
    Is there a better way to write the element to a file?
    Any sample code available?

    You could try something like this:
        String elementToString(Element element)
        throws Exception
            StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();
            TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
            Transformer transformer = tFactory.newTransformer();
            transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.INDENT, "yes");
            transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.METHOD, "xml");
            transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.OMIT_XML_DECLARATION, "yes");
            DOMSource source = new DOMSource(element);
            StreamResult result = new StreamResult(sw);
            transformer.transform(source, result);
            return sw.toString();
        }Regards

  • Implicit character or charactered structure -- to String  Conversion

    Hi everybody,
    that sounds trivial but i am struggeling.... which is the most elegant way to do a implicit "To-String" Conversion in ABAP Objects...
    I have e.g.
        data lok_string type string.
        lok_string = wa.
        m_object->addline( lok_string ).
    which is working fine but is not elegant comaring with java.
    i want
        m_object->addline( wa ).
    but this don't go when "wa" is a structured workarea with many "type c"s in it (and only these).
    but since the explicit assignment "lok_string = wa." is working well, there could be a elegant  implicit  one?
    (m_object->addline expects a string variable.)
    Thank is aprreciated.
    Regards
    Hartmut

    Hi Sandra,
    this is the right direction.... but i would like to have it as an nested expression... (since implicit conversion seams to be impossible)
    like...
    m_object->addline( lcl_xxx=>tostring( wa_head ) )
    but this line above is not an valid abap objects syntax, unfortunatelly
    ... having:
    class lcl_xxx definition.
      public section.
        class-methods tostring importing charlike type clike returning value(string) type string.
    endclass.
    class lcl_xxx implementation.
      method tostring.
        string = charlike.
      endmethod.
    endclass.
    Best regards
    Hartmut

  • Array of elements

    Hi, i want to create a n-dimensional array full of data (string type). Something like attached file but a bit more advanced. I need to use while loop. Every time the column,row and input data change.
    It would look like this:
    first time a start while loop the input data should go to col 1, row1
    second time input data to col 4, row 7
    third to col 6, row 22,
    and so on... i thking you understand the point.
    in attached file i want to write string in every row.
    Thanks for the answer,
    Božidar
