[AS3] reference to stage variable from MC

Hi!
At the begining I'm sory for my English ;)
I've been coding in AS2 for a while, but now I decided to try
AS3. The situation is like:
- I've got one Movie Clip on a stage
- I have a code in the 1st frame of the Main Timeline:
var somevar:String = "somevalue"
- I have a code in the 1st frame of the Movie Clip's
timeline:
trace(root.somevar) // error
trace(parent.somevar) // error
How to trace that variable?? The same is with stopping the
Main Timeline's playback.
parent.stop() and root.stop() don't work :(
HEEELLLP MEEE! ;)

  • Is there a way to reference a private variable from one class in another?

    My first class starts off by declaring variables like so:
    class tStudent {
      // declare student name, id, grades 1 & 2, and gpa
      private String fname, lname, g1, g2;
      private int id;
      private double gpa;
      // define a constructor for a new student
      tStudent () {fname=lname=g1=g2=null; id=-1; gpa=0.0;}
      // define methods for manipulating the data members.
      // readStudent: reads information for just one student
    public void read (Scanner input) {
          fname = input.next();
          lname = input.next();
          id = input.nextInt();
          g1 = input.next();
          g2 = input.next();
    }And the second class:// tStudentList: for a list of students
    class tStudentList {
      private int nStudents;
      private tStudent[] list;
      // constructor for creating student list
      tStudentList() {
          list = new tStudent[36];
          for (int i=0; i < 36; i++) list=new tStudent();
    // read the individual students into the student list
    public void read(Scanner scan) {
    nStudents=0;
    while (scan.hasNext()) {list[nStudents++].read(scan);}
    // display the list of all students - fname, lname, id, g1, g2 and gpa
    // with an appropriate header so the output matches my sample //output
    public void print() {
    Is there a way to reference the variables in the first class to use in the second? Specifically in the last section of code where I am going to print the list.

    Not without resorting to reflection hackery. If the fields are private (and are supposed to be), then that means "don't allow access to these to outsiders of this class" by design.
    So if you really meant them to be accessible, then don't use private, or provide public accessors for them.

  • Can i reference an environmant variable from a package?

    Hi,
    My problem is this,
    I am using a file from a package to dump some of my data. The

    up from the environment. Is this possible ?
    In short is there a function in Oracle similar to getenv() in

    Did you try "OWA_UTIL.GET_CGI_ENV('VARNNAME')"
    This is not for Ora-Lite. It is a PLSQL package belonging

  • How can I pass a variable from Test Stand to CVI by reference

    Hi!
    I can't to pass numeric or boolean variable from Test Stand (for example: FileGlobals.StopFlag) into the step (CVI function).
    Function prototype:
    void __declspec(dllexport) __cdecl PC2_WaitWhileResponceAppear(tTestData *testData, tTestError *testError, int *iStopFlag).
    When variable has bin changed I can't see this change from my function.
    CVI 2010, Test Stand 2010
    Can anybody help me?

    Hey Rombar,
    It is certainly possible to pass variables by reference; for example, if you go to <TestStand Directory>/Examples/Demo/C and open the computer.seq file, you can see one of the example sequences that uses CVI modules. If you click on one of these steps, you'll see that some of the parameters, such as the error information, is passed with pointers. This is a pass by reference.
    To help narrow this down, it'd be good for us to figure out a few things about how the code is run. First, if you go to Configure > Adapters, select the CVI adapter and choose Configure, you can see options for this adapter. Do you have it configured to run in an external instance of CVI or as an in-process call?
    Also, if you're wanting to see a change made in TestStand in your external code, this makes me think that you're wanting to run the code and then continue to execute your TestStand sequence while the code runs. How did you configure this behavior? For example, are you calling this code as a separate sequence in a new thread, or are you using another method to run this code while the sequence continues to run?
    Finally, if we could see a screenshot of how you're configuring the parameters on the TestStand step, that might be helpful as well.

  • How to delete multiple variables from the variables list

    Hello,
    Iam using FrameMaker 9.0. Is there a way I can select multiple variables from the book and delete them together.
    Thanks,
    CP.

    NO in FM9. Take SQUIDDS TOOLBOX the free tool: 'Formats'
    'Formats' is a very helpful tool for 'deleting' paragraph formats, character formats, cross reference formats, table formats, color definitions and variables.
    You can delete unused one or all formats of selected. For paragraph and character you can also decide to 'add new one in catalog'.

  • How do I store VI References in global variables and access them later

    From what I know, Labview automatically deletes VI references when they go out of use. Is there a way for me to override this so that I can access a set of preloaded references in a separate VI? Essentially I would like to open the VI's dynamically into the memory, store the references in global variables and access them at a later time. The VI's I'm referencing won't be known until runtime. I know its not the safest way to do it, but it would be the most productive on my end.
    Thank you
    Clay Upton

    I'm not sure what you mean by "a later time", but a VI reference will remain valid as long as the VI is in memory. If you don't unload the VIs, the references will remain valid.
    If you do need to unload the VIs, for whatever reason, I would suggest the following:
    Create a functional global as your interface for obtaining the references.
    Feed the paths to the VIs into the VI when initializing it (since you don't know which VIs in advance).
    When calling the VI to obtain the references, have the VI check them first (using the Not a Number... primitive). If it sees that they're invalid, it can open a new reference and return that.
    You should note that when a VI is removed from memory, the data space is used is released, so if those VIs are expected to hold data (using shift registers, etc.) this will be a problem.
    The description I've given will only be usable in certain instances (and it has its intricacies), but you didn't really give any details about what you're actually trying to accomplish.

  • How to access a variable from within a symbol.

    How do I access a variable set outside a symbol from within that symbol?
    Thanks

    If you set a variable on stage ,say
    sym.setVariable("stageVariable", "I am stage variable");
    You can access it from within  a symbol using :
    var myVariable = sym.getComposition().getStage().getVariable("stageVariable");
    Basically you need to get handle to the symbol in which the variable is defined.

  • Problem accessing session variable from jsp

    Hi!
    I get an error retrieving a session variable from inside a JSP declaration scriptlet....
    Something like this code in a JSP page:
    <%!
    public void funtion1() {
    String parameter1 = session.getAttribute("parameter1");
    %>I have seen that I have available getContextServer() method and from there I could call getAttribute("parameter1") . But the thing is that the attribute I want to retrieve was stored in session by another Jsp page.
    Any solutions are welcome
    Cheers
    Victor

    Appropriately the above is one the reasons also You cannot use JSP implicit objects from the declaration tag. However we can think of a small workaround by passing the reference like the one discussed below
    <%!public void funtion1(HttpSession session) {
    String parameter1 = session.getAttribute("parameter1").toString();
    }%>
    <% funtion1(session);%>Hope that helps :)

         Thanks KT

    ......How are you declaring the class in your JSP? ... are you instantiating it as a bean using the useBean tag, or just instantiating it in your code like normal.
    Maybe you could post the relevant JSP code too?
    Hello again,
    Only the last string is populating after the file has be tokenized. What I'll like to accomplish is passing the very first string in the file. I did not get too far in the JSP file setup because the code is still in it's testing stage, but any help will be highly appreciated.
    Here is the JSP code
    <%@page import="dev.*" %>
    <%@page session="true" language="java" import="java.io.*" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="wagerhist" scope="request" class="dev.RoundDetail2" />

  • Accessing the stage variable problems in AS 3.0

    Hi. Quick question...I'm trying to access the stage variable
    which I believe is supposed to be global and I should be able to
    access it from any class. Is this true? The compiler is complaining
    that it doesn't recognize this variable? Note that these objects
    have not been added to the stage yet but still, these are compile
    time errors, so why is that I'm getting these errors?
    Thanks,
    Sam

    Sam,
    > Actually, this doesn't have to do with that question.
    > Basically, the compiler is complaining that it doesn't
    > recognize the stage variable.
    It complains about the DisplayObject.stage property? Are you
    referencing it in conjunction with a DisplayObject instance?
    > This is weird because in my AS 3.0 book, I see that
    > the stage variable is being accessed without
    instantiating
    > it or retrieving it.
    What book is that? I might have it, then I can see what
    you're seeing.
    > I am extending Sprite in all my classes.
    Yeah, Sprite extends DisplayObject, by of InteractiveObject,
    then
    DisplayObjectContainer, so it certainly is entitled to the
    stage property.
    Let me know what book you're looking at, and if I don't have
    it (and if
    you're still interested), I'll try to recreate a simplified
    proof of concept
    on this end.

  • How to reference a static variable before the static initializer runs

    I'm anything but new to Java. Nevertheless, one discovers something new ever' once n a while. (At least I think so; correct me if I'm wrong in this.)
    I've long thought it impossible to reference a static variable on a class without the class' static initializer running first. But I seem to have discovered a way:
    public class Foo  {
      public static final SumClass fooVar;  // by default initialized to null
      static  {
         fooVar = new SumClass();
    public class Bar  {
      public static final SumClass barVar;
      static  {
         barVar = Foo.fooVar;  // <<<--- set to null !
    }Warning: Speculation ahead.
    Normally the initial reference to Foo would cause Foo's class object to instantiate, initializing Foo's static variables, then running static{}. But apparently a static initializer cannot be triggered from within another static initializer. Can anyone confirm?
    How to fix/avoid: Obviously, one could avoid use of the static initializer. The illustration doesn't call for it.
    public class Foo  {
      public static final SumClass fooVar = new SumClass();  // either this ..
    public class Bar  {
      public static final SumClass barVar = Foo.fooVar;  // .. or this would prevent the problem
    }But there are times when you need to use it.
    So what's an elegant way to avoid the problem?

    DMF. wrote:
    jschell wrote:
    But there are times when you need to use it. I seriously doubt that.
    I would suppose that if one did "need" to use it it would only be once in ones entire professional career.Try an initializer that requires several statements. Josh Bloch illustrates one in an early chapter of Effective Java, IIRC.
    Another classic usage is for Singletons. You can make one look like a Monostate and avoid the annoying instance() invocation. Sure, it's not the only way, but it's a good one.
    What? You only encounter those once in a career? We must have very different careers. ;)
    So what's an elegant way to avoid the problem? Redesign. Not because it is elegant but rather to correct the error in the design.<pff> You have no idea what my design looks like; I just drew you a couple of stick figures.If it's dependent on such things as when a static initializer runs, it's poor. That's avoidable. Mentioning a case where such a dependency is used, that's irrelevant. It can be avoided. I know this is the point where you come up with a series of unfortunate coincidences that somehow dictate that you must use such a thing, but the very fact that you're pondering the problem with the design is a design problem. By definition.
    Besides, since what I was supposing to be a problem wasn't a problem, your "solution" isn't a solution. Is it?Well, you did ask the exact question "So what's an elegant way to avoid the problem?". If you didn't want it answered, you should have said so. I'm wondering if there could be any answer to that question that wouldn't cause you to respond in such a snippy manner. Your design is supposedly problematic, as evidenced by your question. I fail to see why the answer "re-design" is unacceptable. Maybe "change the way the Java runtime initializes classes" would have been better?
    This thread is bizarre. Why ask a question to which the only sane answer, you have already ruled out?

  • Accessing Captivate 5.5 variables from embedded SWFs

    Hi,
    as we all know the interface for accessing Captivate variables from embedded SWFs tends to change between Captivate versions. Shortly after it's release we upgraded to version 5.5, and I'm not succeeding in accessing the Captivate variables in my Flash/AS3 code the same way it was done in version 5.
    How should I access the Captivate 5.5 variables (rdinfoCurrentSlide et al) from my SWFs?

    Hi,
    You can use system variable : cpInfoCurrentSlide to show the slide number.
    So you can use text captions to display the value of the variable, the format for displaying the value stored in the variable is $$<system variable>$$. So for slide number use : $$cpInfoCurrentSlide$$, type this in the text caption and then check it in the preview.
    Thanks

  • Passing a variable from a scanner to StringBuffe

    I need help with the code below. I'm tring to pass 5000 using a variable from a scanner to StringBuffer(); . The goal here is to print x, y and z. y should be the reverse of x, that's why I'm using StringBuffer(); . When I try to compile this code , I get incompatibletype error message on y = sb.reverse(); . Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
    import java.util.Scanner;
    public class StringBufferLengthTest
         public static void main(String[] args)
          Scanner kbi = new Scanner(System.in);
          System.out.println("Enter an Interger");
          int x,y;
          int z = x + y;
           x = kbi.nextInt();
           StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer(x);
            y = sb.reverse();
           //y = sb.reverse();
            //System.out.println ( sb);
             System.out.println ( x);
             System.out.println ( y);
             System.out.println ( z);
    }

    incompatibletype error message on y = sb.reverse()Let's see. sb is a StringBuffer, and StringBuffer.reverse() returns a StringBuffer.
    y is an int. So the line of code attempts to assign a StringBuffer reference to an int, hence "incompatible types". Also, in
    new StringBuffer(x)this constructor doesn't do what you think it does; particularly it does not create a StringBuffer with the textual representation of your int. See here for the documentation for StringBuffer.
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/StringBuffer.html
    What you want to do, is convert your int x to a string, put this in a StringBuffer, reverse that and obtain the resulting string, and convert that back to an int.
    I will leave it as a challenge to you to find how to do the string <-> int converting; start here
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/index.html
    and check out the docs for classes String and Integer. If you have trouble with this, feel free to come back and ask for more :-) Good luck.
